at the bay bridge toll plaza and the metering lights flipped on at 532 this morning. right now, the backup is approaching the 880 over crossing. but if you're in the carpool lanes, you'll see that cars are moving by. they're very quickly. and then a live look at our richmond-san rafael bridge camera. right now, we still have that signaler in effect with the right three lanes blocked, but traffic is flowing pretty nicely right there at this time. >> thanks, gloria. developing news in the east bay. an alameda county sheriff's deputy is in the hospital after he was shot in union city. the search for the suspect stretched into the night. it's still unclear if they arrested anyone when the shooting came. while the alameda county deputy was serving an eviction notice on dow avenue right off alvarado alvarado-niles road, abc seven news reporter lena howland is live near that scene, where she's still seeing some law enforcement. good morning lena. >> good morning reggie. luckily, that deputy involved in this incident is expected to be okay. and right around 330 this morning, union city police told us that the police activity here

in this area off of dow avenue has since been resolved. and they say there is no longer a threat to the community at this point in time, though, police have not confirmed any arrests. this started yesterday afternoon as an alameda county sheriff's deputy was serving an eviction notice. the suspect was considered to be armed and dangerous, sparking an hours long search that went late into the night. multiple agencies were on scene, combing through the streets to find this person. the area here off of dow avenue is commercial and expansive. we heard from a delivery truck driver who was sitting in his truck when he heard the shots. he stepped out and saw the injured officer. >> the ems came and picked him up across the street between the two buildings. of these until calm and then swat saw come in just before midnight. >> the alameda county sheriff's office said the deputy that was shot already went through surgery for a non-life

threatening injury to his arm, and they say he is in recovery and in good spirits in the hospital. union city police say they are expecting to put out their next update right around 8:00 this morning. live in union city. lena howland abc seven news. >> thank you lena. now this sheriff's deputy is the second law enforcement officer to be shot in the bay area recently. you'll remember oakland officer tuan lei was shot and killed last month. the effect it's having on law enforcement here is also something that police agencies are seeing more nationwide. a recent report by the fraternal order of police shows that from 2018 to 2023, the number of officers shot in the line of duty nationwide jumped 20, i should say jumped 60% from 237 to 378. it's something former san mateo police chief susan manheimer says is largely due to the increased number of guns in our communities, and the proliferation of guns is simply means that as we enter these situations, the level of

violence and the level of use of force increases. >> you never know what what a day is going to look like. you know what time you start. you don't know what time you finish and you don't know if at the end of that day, you'll be going home to your family for all of 2023, there were 22 officers that were shot here in california while on duty. >> we sent an alert out as soon as this breaking news hit, make sure that you are on top of the latest updates and weather with the abc seven news bay area app. make sure the apps notifications are turned on. >> today, a judge is expected to decide whether the man accused of killing cash app founder bob lee can move his trial out of san francisco, near his attorneys requested a change of venue after photos of mamani in jail were published in november. they believe the photos and other media coverage could impact whether he gets a fair and impartial jury. >> developing news out of southern california, where six people were found dead in the mojave desert. their bodies were

discovered near el mirage, which is in a remote part of san bernardino county. one look at the scene, and it was clear to detectives that they said, whatever happened in that desert was deliberate. gloria is at the live desk with a look at the investigation. gloria. >> good morning. kumasi sheriff's deputies found five bodies and two abandoned cars on tuesday night. at least one of those vehicles had bullet holes. a sixth person was found yesterday morning. three of the bodies were burned as if someone tried to set them on fire to hide the crime. the call came in to the san bernardino county sheriff's dispatch not to report a crime, but the caller asked for a welfare check off the highway in the middle of the desert. >> it's going to be heartbreaking no matter what the situation is, what they discover out there as far as the circumstances surrounding it. um, so our investigators will continue to do their best to wrap this up quickly and get all the information possible to bring justice to those folks out there. >> detectives have not

identified the bodies of the victims, although one of the cars had bullet holes. officials are not saying how how those six people might have died. reggie. >> thank you. gloria this morning we're learning about another issue with a commercial plane. this time, this was an airbus with an apparently missing parts, and it got noticed by a passenger. so this happened while a virgin atlantic flight was about to take off from england for new york city. this was january 15th. a passenger named phil hardy noticed something missing on one of the wings and alerted a flight attendant. >> one of these people that notice things and someone just didn't look odd because you could see the white screws in the line and then just fall black holes. so i took a picture, zoomed in closer, and you could actually see that there were holes. >> hardy says flight attendants assured him there was not a safety issue. however the flight did end up being canceled so engineers could inspect the plane, airbus tells usa today. the missing fasteners had no

impact on the plane's safe operation. >> the faa has given united and alaska airlines final approval to return their boeing 737 max nine planes to service, pending final inspections, the news comes weeks after the planes were grounded when a door plug blew off an alaska airlines plane mid-flight. united says their inspections will look at access to each door plug and will verify proper installation of the door and frame hardware. this comes as legislators on capitol hill grilled the head of boeing yesterday over safety issues. >> they do not want to be legislating on aviation safety. after some big disaster or crash . >> united says they could start returning max nine aircraft to service on sunday, alaska told cnn that their max nines could start to return to service as soon as tomorrow. coming up, high profile republicans urging nikki haley to drop out of the race, but she is vowing to keep

trump is sharpening his attacks, saying that her donors are barred from the maga movement and also called her bird brain. haley is challenging trump to a debate in her home state of south carolina, where she used to be governor, and out of every thing that he said in his rant. he didn't talk about the american people once he talked about revenge, billionaire or co-founder of linkedin reid hoffman says he's holding off on contributions to haley's

campaign. meanwhile, president joe biden received a key endorsement from the united auto workers union. mountain view based waymo wants to expand its driverless car service to other bay area cities on the peninsula and in the south bay, right now, the robo taxis are only in san francisco, according to the chronicle. waymo asked the puc if its services could expand to cities like sunnyvale, palo alto , mountain view, san mateo and la. the request comes as san francisco is suing to try and rein in the expansion of robo taxi services in the city. >> new at six santa clara's levi stadium will likely keep its name for the next ten years, if not longer. the 40 niners in levi strauss company just announced a proposal a ten year extension plus naming rights through 2043. this is a deal worth $170 million. the stadium authority board just needs to approve it at its next meeting, which is tuesday. >> a nonprofit organization that helps people who are

experiencing homelessness and poverty in the north bay is breaking ground on a new facility today. here's a preview of what it will look like when it opens at the end of this year. ritter center in san rafael has been operating out of a victorian home for more than 40 years. it's moving to this new spot just a few blocks away. this will have a lot of new things medical exam rooms, food pantry, storage, parking and workspace for staff and volunteers. >> there's a new growing debate over t. an american scientist has angered some british people by offering a tip to make the perfect cup of tea, she says one of the keys is a pinch of salt. people in britain said absolutely not because they said americans don't know how to make tea right. they also said americans only know how to make it by using the microwave. wait a minute. microwave? >> no, scientist says, adding a small amount. >> not enough to taste makes tea seem less bitter. first of all,

us really into vancouver and seattle and portland, but northern california and especially the north bay may get scraped by one or the 1 or 2 of these outlying showers tomorrow morning and then again on saturday. so here's future weather showing you thatrillionainfall tomorrow morning may see some light showers around ukiah clear lake, but watch what happens saturday morning. a better chance for more areas to see some light showers in the north bay. outside of the north bay we remain dry and saturday is a pretty cloudy day, but sunday the sunshine is back and mild air moves in here. look at future tracker temperatures on sunday 60s to the mid 70 s. well above average. get those outdoor plans ready and it still stays mild on monday. so the niners forecast kick off temperature. enjoy that 72 degrees at levi's the fourth quarter dipping to 63. so it is mild the entire game. accuweather seven day forecast fog to sunshine today mostly cloudy tomorrow. that morning shower in the north bay. otherwise it's cloudy to start out the weekend. sunday is brighter and warmer. our next storm likely here on wednesday.

or at least part of it. i have to tell you, it's a $6.5 million for police overtime. and as you point out, that money is initially coming out of the general fund. now the hope and the plan is that it's going to be replenished by that 20 part of that $20 million that the mayor collected from business leaders and such in order to host the event. the city is also considering covering some of the costs with surplus money from san francisco's apec reserves. >> but that plan is facing some pushback from businesses who say they lost money during the summit, and they want to be reimbursed from that reserve fund next, at 6.301, state senator wants drivers to slow down the push to make cars that cannot go above a certain speed limit and the emotional night at the chase center. warriors paying tribute to coach dickey and get a big

drive times for this morning. right now we do have a slowdown down on westbound 80 at bay bridge. that's about 19 minutes right now. >> thank you gloria, an alameda county sheriff's deputy is in the hospital recovering after being shot while serving an eviction notice in union city. we're still waiting to learn more about the deputy's condition and if any arrests were made. abc7 news reporter lena howland is live in union city, where police say things are resolved. however lena, you still see police out there. >> reggie that's right. it's been about 17 hours since this incident happened. and as you can see right here behind me, police are still on scene at this hour now, right around 330 this morning, union city police told us that the police activity out here has since been resolved. and they say there is no longer a threat to the public, but it's still not clear if any arrests have been made. this comes after an alameda county sheriff's deputy was shot at a business park while serving an eviction notice. multiple agencies were on scene after that combing through this area.

left a kidnaped two year old child in san leandro. you can see the car suddenly stopping near a warehouse complex. the suspect gets out carrying a two year old, drops him off, gets back into the car and then drives off. now, less than a minute later, a bus driver stops and calls for help. you can see people coming out of their businesses and nearby buildings trying to help the toddler. police then spring into action. a san leandro police officer just happened to be listening to the oakland police radio. >> actually heard that oakland was investigating a stolen vehicle that may have involved a child being taken with it. so once our officers were able to make that connection, we notified the opd that we had a infant found. >> a short time later, the child was reunited with his mother. she wasn't able to help with that investigation since her phone was still in the car. she tracked it to a mcdonald's in marin county through the find my phone app. >> the mother was able to give

us continuous updates, at one point showing that the devices appear to be uh- on tiburon boulevard, our sheriff's deputies responded and located the vehicle unoccupied in the mcdonald's parking lot. >> law enforcement then searched that area. they found two suspects at a bus stop and arrested them. >> a dramatic scene caught on camera in san francisco, where a maserati collided with a muni bus. this happened near third and bryant streets yesterday afternoon, and you can see that the car got pretty smashed up. there's reportedly a second crash at third and stillman. we haven't heard if anybody was hurt or what caused the collision. we have reached out to both san francisco police and sfmta, and we're still waiting to get an answer back. >> today is a big day in san mateo and alameda counties. volunteers are conducting the point in time count of the unhoused population. yesterday, 200 volunteers conducted the count in contra costa county, according to data from the department of housing and urban

development, or hud. over the past 15 years, contra costa county has seen an overall decline in the number of people experiencing homelessness. there were more than 4000 in 2008. more than 3000 in 2022. the number dropped to 2300. in 2023, however, the county's director of health, housing and homeless services says this this one day figure is often an undercount of the total number they serve annually. >> last year, we touched over 10,000 people, um, and so that's a far cry. larger than the about 3000 that you count on. you know, one day a year, the final count is due to hud in april. >> a california lawmaker wants a slow down speeders with a controversial proposal that might be riling up some drivers. the bill by state senator scott wiener would require speed limit speed limiters on vehicles sold or manufactured in california to. the technology would

physically prevent a vehicle from being driven more than ten miles an hour over the posted speed limit. it would apply to both city streets and highways. wiener says the bill is not government overreach. when the federal government started mandating seat belts, there were people who said that's an overreach. >> you're invading my freedom. i think we understand now that without that seat belts have saved countless, countless lives . >> last year, the national transportation safety board recommended speed limiters be installed on all vehicles. the devices are already required in the eu. >> another company will stop offering new home policies here in california for the hartford financial services group says it will no longer write new policies starting february 1st, so this affects all forms of personal property coverage, including renters, condo and dwelling. fire insurance spokesperson says it will continue to renew existing homeowners insurance. hartford joins a growing list of insurers
