cars stalling out. this driver ending up in a ditch. with millions across the south facing the threat of flooding. here in texas, cars cautiously navigating this flooded highway underpass. this man hydroplaning, driving off an embankment right into a river. the ground collapsing around this massive sink hole after all the rain in livingston. this car bobbing in the water in jackson, mississippi, after attempting to drive through a flooded underpass. and in the midwest, drone footage captured huge chunks of ice breaking apart on lake michigan. well, the snap back from cold to warm certainly providing its own set of problem force a huge chunk of the country especially east of the rockies. that will continue over the next couple of days. michael? >> thank you, rob. bring in ginger. good morning, ginger. >> we're not done with all the water. it is moving slowly east. that's the problem. these storms move slowly, so

they just train, as we call it. they go over the same tracks. that's why you've got watches from tyler texas to providence, rhode island. for different reasons. buffalo's in one, too, because you got ice jams possible in a lot of the rivers in the north where there's been a lot of freezing. it's all about the heavy rain. jackson, mississippi again, new orleans, today. montgomery, alabama, in it now. so is atlanta. into western north carolina. knoxville, tennessee going to see pretty significant rain. when you put rain and the warm air over any of the cold, you get this. this is chicago. that was lake shore drive. they have less than a quarter mile visibility. that is really tough for airports and really tough on the roads. kansas city half mile, quarter mile in little rock. you'll have fog problems for the next two days. please take extra care. i saw it this morning. i'm sure you did, too. >> thanks. we'll get the latest on donald trump. he's off the campaign trail heading to a courtroom for a civil trial to determine how much he must pay for defaing e. jean carroll. senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is at the

courthouse in downtown manhattan. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning, george. court is resuming after a three day pause. assuming president trump does take the witness stand, there are going to be limits on what he can say. this trial is only about how much money, if any, trump needs to pay e. jean carroll for defaming her in 2019 after she accused him of sexual assault. an earlier trial determined trump did sexually assault carroll and found his statements denying it were defamatory. so on the witness stand, trump is not allowed to say otherwise, or accuse carroll of lying or of having improper motives for bringing her claim. the judge has already threatened to boot trump from court after the former president made disruptive side comments about the case that the jury could hear. the question is whether the former president abides by the restrictions on his testimony and his behavior. attorneys for e. jean carroll have already expressed concern that trump is going to use his

testimony to sow chaos or try to turn the trial into some kind of political campaign event. and carroll says trump is still defaming her, both on the campaign trail and in social media posts that he's made from the courtroom. george, she's seeking at least $10 million in compensation. >> this judge has become such a consequential figure. okay, aaron. thank you very much. nikki haley is focusing on her home state of south carolina despite more calls from top republicans to drop out of the race. rachel scott is in charleston. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: hey, george. good morning. this may be nikki haley's home state but she is the underdog here. she'll have the campaign trail largely to herself over the next few days and she will need it. she's trailing donald trump by double digits as more and more republicans rally behind him. nikki haley heading straight to her home state of south carolina resisting calls to drop out of the race. >> we are not gonna sit there and just give up. we're gonna sit there and we're gonna fight, because americans deserve better than what they have in these two options.

>> reporter: haley is trying to rebound after two back to back losses in iowa and new hampshire, questioning donald trump's mental fitness. >> get on a debate stage and let's go. [ cheers ] bring it, donald. show me what you've got! >> reporter: and calling out trump's victory speech, where he unleashed on his former u.n. ambassador, calling her delusional and an imposter. >> he pitched a fit. he was insulting. i know that's what he does when he is threatened. he should feel threatened without a doubt. >> reporter: but overnight trump threatening any prospective donors to haley on social media saying, anybody that makes a contribution will be permanently barred from the maga camp. haley now campaigning in her own back yard. she was born and raised here, serving as a popular governor for two terms. but south carolina has swung toward trump. >> he's got the backing. lot of people that feel he's tough on immigration, on the economy. i think nikki brings more in the

foreign policy area. >> reporter: air force veteran jay lombardo is supporting haley but says this is trump territory. do you think donald trump will be dominant here? >> unfortunately, yes. but he brings -- he just brings too much baggage with him. >> reporter: jay says he will end up supporting the eventual republican nominee. and president biden now saying it's clear that will be donald trump, gearing up for a rematch. >> usa! >> it's great to be home! >> reporter: biden welcoming an endorsement of the powerful united auto workers union four months after traveling to michigan to walk the picket line with workers. >> while i stood in solidarity with you on the picket line, as the president said, donald trump went to a nonunion shop. >> reporter: the south carolina primary still a few weeks away. trump does have the support of the state's governor and the rnc

chair woman who vowed to stay neutral during the primary is calling on nikki haley to drop out of the race. robin? >> thank you. we got good news for boeing. the faa cleared the way for the max 9's to resume flying as early as this weekend while the company's ceo faces tough questions on capitol hill. our transportation correspondent gio benitez is at reagan national airport for us. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, robin. good morning. right at this very moment, alaska airlines and united are working on those final official inspections to get these planes back in the air. as you said, that boeing ceo told senators he takes full responsibility. overnight the faa releasing its final instructions for airlines to inspect max 9's. united already saying it's putting the planes back in the air by sunday. alaska airlines even earlier, friday. this after three weeks of investigating that door plug that flew off the alaska airlines flight 16,000 feet in the air. the faa laying out an enhanced

maintenance process which will require an inspection of specific bolts, guide tracks and fittings and detailed visual inspections of left and right midcabin exit door plugs. >> it's four bolts properly installed, properly tightened. if they're in and properly inspected, these airplanes are as safe as any in the sky. the fix is simple. regaining the trust of the flying public is the harder part. >> reporter: the faa also telling boeing it can't expand on production of the maxes beyond what's already being built until there's a full investigation. the news coming hours after boeing's ceo, dave calhoun, took tough questions from lawmakers on capitol hill. >> we fly safe planes. we don't put airplanes in the air that we don't have 100% confidence in. >> reporter: the meetings were at boeing's request. >> the boeing ceo takes full responsibility for this and assured me this is the most important issue which i pressed him on. safety, safety, safety. >> reporter: reporters asking

calhoun about a "seattle times" report claiming the door plug was last installed by boeing, not the fuselage manufacturer spirit aerosystems. >> thank you so much. >> reporter: calhoun wouldn't comment, the company pointing us to the ntsb. and that boeing ceo will meet with at least one other senator today, senator ted cruz. boeing is actually going to pause production for today at its factory in washington to focus exclusively on quality control. robin? >> gio, we take this as the faa believing that the design of this plane is safe. >> reporter: that's right. the faa basically is saying that this design, door plugs are not new. they believe this design is safe. they believe this may be a quality control issue at these factories before these plane ever get to the airlines to begin with. so that's what they're going to be looking at very closely right now, quality control. >> that is good. all right, gio. thank you. >> okay, robin. we're going to the economy now.

new report on economic growth is due out this morning. whit johnson is on wall street with the story. good morning, whit. >> reporter: hey, george. good morning. this is like a report card on the health of the u.s. economy. the report shows that gdp growth was significantly stronger than many experts had anticipated. according to the commerce department, the u.s. economy grew at an annualized rate of 3.3% in the fourth quarter much higher than the increase of 2%. that would indicate a slowdown from the previous quarter's growth of 4.9% but still strong enough to support job growth and critically avoid a recession. so what's driving this growth? strong consumer spending is a top reason. americans opened their wallets this holiday season. retail sales were up 5.6% in december compared to a year ago. this leads to another concern, the record high credit card debt in this country. balances topping $1 trillion last year for the first time.

despite that, the economy keeps growing, unemployment remains low and at least for now, no sign of a looming recession. michael? >> all right. thank you so much, whit. now to a go to during cold and flu season. there's a nationwide recall of the popular cough syrup robitussin. our erielle reshef is here. good morning, erielle. >> good morning, michael. the recall of the popular cough syrup is due to microbial contamination. the maker of the drug saying it's voluntarily recalling eight lots of the cough syrup including robitussin honey for daytime and nighttime. ingesting it could lead to deadly infections for at risk people and for those not immuno compromised life threatening infections are not likely to occur but experts say serious symptoms that could neseccitate medical intervention cannot be

completely ruled out. so far there have not been reports of adverse events related to this recall. the company now advising anyone with those products to stop using them immediately. robin? >> good to know, erielle. thank you. now the new push to make it harder for children to log on to social media. one state is working on the strictest crackdown in the country. morgan norwood is here with what you need to know, especially if you have a 15-year-old at home. >> that's right. we've been covering how social media companies have faced a growing number of calls to make their platforms safer for young people. this morning lawmakers in florida with this major crackdown. they want these platforms off limits to kids altogether. this morning lawmakers in florida approving what could be the most strict regulation on social media in the country. the house passing a bill that would prohibit anyone under the age of 16 from signing up for most social media platforms, even if they have their parents approval. >> it's like a digital fentanyl. even the most plugged in parent or atuned teen has a hard time shutting the door against these addictive features. >> reporter: the bill targeting any social media site that tracks user activity, allows children to upload content or uses a distant feature designed

to cause compulsive use. >> they're just taking advantage of kids growing up. >> reporter: opponents say the bill infringes on parental rights and will face first amendment challenges in court. meanwhile in new york city -- >> we are the first major city in america to take this step and call out the danger of social media like this. >> reporter: mayor eric adams designating social media as an environmental toxin and public health hazard. >> we cannot stand by and let big tech monetize our children's privacy and jeopardize their mental health. >> reporter: the surgeon general warning up to 95 ppbts of youth, ages 13-17 report using the social media platform, with more than one-third saying they use social media almost constantly. and just this morning meta announced new safety measured aimed at teen including restricting private messages from strangers along with parental controls, michael? >> this is one of the situations you have to explain to your kids why. they'll have a lot of questions

and complaints about that. thank you very much, morgan. we're looking forward to a big nfl weekend. there's a lot of buzz about the big move from michigan for football coach jim harbaugh back to the nfl. will reeve has more from l.a. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, michael. who's got it better than jim harbaugh? fresh off returning michigan to glory with a national championship, he's bolting to the nfl, agreeing to a reported five-year deal to coach the l.a. chargers. harbaugh spent nine years at the coach at his alma matter. won 89 lost just 25. he had come to be practically worshipped in ann arbor. but the allure of returning to the nfl proved to be too strong. one deciding factor to become the first coach to win a national title and immediately leave for the nfl, potential looming discipline from the ncaa. harbaugh was suspended twice last season by michigan and the big ten conference for various alleged infractions, including his alleged role in that sign stealing scandal.

morning in the trial of the michigan mom whose son shot and killed four students at his high school. trevor ault is here with more. good morning, trevor. >> good morning, robin. these are the first parents of a school shooter to face charges. the mother jennifer crumbley on trial first. after two years of delays, her jury is set, with the first arguments beginning today in what could be a landmark case. >> all rise. >> reporter: this morning opening arguments expected in an unprecedented trial. jennifer crumbley facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter for her alleged role in the 2021 michigan school shooting carried out by her son which he killed four classmates and wounded several others. prosecutors say jennifer and her husband james crumbley purchased the weapon for her son, who testified it was kept unlocked. school officials say they told the crumbleys they had to get their son help after being called in to the school on the day of the shooting after the teen had written disturbing

messages, but the parents declined to take him home. the shooting unfolding only hours later. >> the notion that a parent could read those words and also know their son had access to a deadly weapon that they gave him is unconscionable and i think it's criminal. >> reporter: the jury for jennifer's trial now set. it features multiple parents and gun owners, including a hunter with children who keeps her guns at her father's house for safety, and a doctor who says he's very familiar with gun violence, but is a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment. >> there's different layers in terms of jurors experiences that will influence how they approach the case. so all those things and all those beliefs and attitudes and experiences come into play. >> reporter: the oxford high school shooter was just 15 at the time of the massacre. he's since pleaded guilty to multiple counts of murder, expressing remorse and referring to himself as a really bad person. last month families of victims relaying their grief at the

hearing where he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. >> november 30th, 2021 is a day that has forever changed my life. the day i found out that my daughter's life was taken. >> reporter: and jennifer crumbley has plead not guilty. she does want the judge to order her own son and three psychiatrists who met with him after the shooting to testify at her trial. her son's attorneys are fighting that. he's now appealing his own sentence. interestingly, the judge has granted a request for the prosecution. they will not say the name of the shooter at all during this trial. >> interesting. >> wow. >> thank you, trevor. jon stewart set to return to the daily show. he will host monday night serve as executive producer. chris connelly has the story. good morning, chris. >> reporter: good morning, george. you're right, the late night og is returning for a once a week mondays only stint on the daily show. stewart's fans hoping he'll serve up the same stuff that made him a tv phenomenon.

would be criminals caught on camera, pizza delivery fails. police use them as a tool. but privacy advocates have concerns. there's a feature called ring neighbors in which users can share videos, whether it's to help catch thieves or find lost pets. in the coming days when that app updates its request for assistance tool will be eliminated. that's due largely to privacy advocates raising concerns over police departments and public safety agencies being allowed to mass request and receive video from app users through the tool. they worry it can turn neighborhoods into a place of constant surveillance and lead to more racial profiling. the company didn't specify white's ending it, but agencies like fire and police can still use the app to share information including safety tips and updates. the videos won't completely go away as a crime fighting tool. law enforcement agencies can still get a warrant to access them. michael? >> thanks, will.

we're going to turn now to a gma health alert. a new report out of the national institutes of health finding children suffering from anxiety may benefit from a form of cognitive behavioral therapy. our chief medical correspondent dr. jennifer ashton is here to break it all down for us. doc, they discovered this treatment could result in identifiable changes to the brain. >> yeah. so first of all, cognitive behavioral therapy is the gold standard in treating anxiety in kids. this involves changing thinking and behavior that's causing problems. it's really the mainstay of psychological treatment. this study using functional mri to look at areas of the brain that are activated or kind of turned down in kids with anxiety who are not on medication showed that 12 weeks of cbt resulted in a lessening of certain areas in the brain that were highly activated before treatment. some areas did not demonstrate as much of a change.

so this really looked into the how and the why, the mechanism of how cbt works and present some interesting targets for future treatment and intervention. >> no parent wants their child to have anxiety. how can you tell if it's becoming a real problem? if so, what are your first steps? >> first of all, you know your child better than anyone. talk to your child's pediatrician if you see signs and symptoms of anxiety that are prolonged. once in awhile these things are normal, but if they start to interfere with life. feeling sad or hopeless, a big change in anger or irritability. and physical complaints, very very common particularly in younger children. their stomach hurts, their head hurt, they have difficulty sleeping. that's when you want to talk to their pediatrician. >> as a parent, being patient. managing and treating this is not a quick fix. >> absolutely not. not for kids or adults. >> all right, doc. thank you so much. >> you bet. >> see you on gma3. >> yes, you will. coming up avengers star mark ruffalo talking about the way he

>> we are back with a gma cover story with one of our favorite guests mark ruffalo. the actor describing how he discovered he had a brain tumor back in 2001. he said it came to him in a dream. erielle is back and has details for us. good morning, erielle. >> fresh off his oscar nomination the actor rewinding back to a chilling moment in his life. it's not the first time he talked about this health scare. but now he's describing in vivid detail the premonition he said led to his diagnosis. >> that's my secret. >> reporter: this morning avengers star mark ruffalo opening up about a health scare, describing the brain tumor diagnosis that changed his life. the 13 going on 30 actor telling the smart list podcast that in 2001 he went to sleep with an ear infection and had an ominous dream. >> it was just like, you have a brain tumor. it wasn't even a voice. it was just pure knowledge, you have a brain tumor.

>> wow. that's amazing. >> you have to deal with it immediately. >> that's crazy. >> reporter: ruffalo immediately sought medical help the next day. >> the nurse calls the doctor out. she comes in and she says, you have a mass on your left side, the size of a golf ball. we don't know what it is. >> reporter: the now 56-year-old learned the golf ball size mass was benign but would require surgery. >> the type of tumor is a vestibular, a big nerve that comes off our brain stem and heads right towards the ear. >> reporter: ruffalo withheld his diagnosis from his wife for two weeks as she was days from giving birth to their son. >> when i told sunny about it, first she thought i was joking then burst into tears and said, i always knew you were going to die young! >> reporter: the oscar nominee going under the knife to remove the mass. but upon waking up, realizing something was wrong. >> completely deaf in one ear. when i woke up the left side of my face was totally paralyzed.

>> reporter: he said the paralysis eventually went away a year later. >> things like racial paralysis tend to come from swelling. was that swelling resolves you do see improvement in facial movement. >> reporter: the award winning actor still deals with some hearing loss, but still grateful for the journey, saying his priorities became very clear. and ruffalo's best supporting actor nomination for poor things is his fourth, bumping him into a record held by al pacino and jack nicholson. so some good company there, and much to look forward to. >> so nice as well. >> thanks, erielle. turning to our series weight loss revolution. this morning we're taking a closer look at bariatric surgery. becky worley is taking a look at how the obesity medicine is changing with the availability of weight loss drugs. good morning becky. >> reporter: george, good morning. more than 250,000 bariatric surgeries were performed in 2021 helping people who were in medical need of weight loss intervention.

but as drugs like monjouro, ozempic, zepbound have entered the market, what has changed for bariatric surgery candidates, and how does that treatment differ from weight loss drugs? travis armstead said he's fought his weight his whole life. >> my whole life i have been struggling since i was about 7, 8 years old. my highest weight i was at 450 pounds. >> reporter: because of the amount he had to lose travis and his doctors decided bariatric surgery was the best option. >> i just needed that push. it helped me mentally. i'm putting my body through this. i'll make sure it's not all for nothing. >> reporter: travis is now down 170 pounds. a little more than a year after his surgery. >> 1,000%. couldn't be happier. >> reporter: these surgeries work by reducing the size of the stomach. >> it goes approximately from the size and shape of a football to the size and shape of a banana. >> reporter: one bariatric surgeon says if patients have a bmi of 35 or above or a 30bmi

with a co-morbidity like heart disease, they can be a candidate for surgery. it can result in 30% of reduction in body mass and can add three to five years to a patient's life. >> most insurance plans consider this a covered benefit and, because the longevity and positive effects happen to them for decades. >> reporter: he says only 1% of eligible people get the surgery but for some people with a very high bmi, surgery may be a better choice than weight loss medications. >> we need to figure out for each patient, what is the right approach? i'm happy we are in consultation where we have more options to offer. >> reporter: for someone who works in obesity medicine, how are we doing as a society taking the stigma off of this medical condition and treating it like the real physical medical issue that it is?

>> the stigma and bias against weight has been a major problem for years. the best thing now about the medications that are available, that stigma has been shattered to a great extent. >> now, we spoke to a lot of doctors about this surgery, including our own jen ashton. some of their points are that bariatric surgery is done for a smaller percentage of people for whom fda approved medications didn't work. she says it's not an easy way out. patients still need to make massive lifestyle changes. fortunately surgery is shown to have immediate positive met metabolic effects like reversing type ii diabetes that are all independent of weight loss, guys. this can be life changes for people. >> thank you very much. how about some pop news? >> let's do it. good morning, everybody. we're going to begin with big news from billy joel, announcing he will perform at this year's grammys. returning to the stage for the

molly played joane carson. tell us a little bit about the pressure to play -- these are real women. we just heard their voices. very upper class. was there pressure to get it right? >> always. whenever you're playing a real person, there's a certain responsibility, pressure so their loved ones, friends, people who remember them a certain way. we have to tell ourselves we're doing an interpretation and we hope we can capture something of their spirit. lot of that was in the writing through our great writer, robbie bates. we had so much help with the costumes and hair and makeup. we had teams and teams of people to, hopefully, turn us into these glamorous beautiful creatures. >> do you feel the same way? >> yes. gus vanzant encouraging us would say, i think you've got that. he was comforting as a director and just a thrill to work with.

>> i tell everybody, come see jade. you got to see jade. >> there's one thing we keep hearing about jade. >> she looks like me. >> she looks like me. >> for jade, yoga is for everybody, all shapes, backgrounds and all abilities. >> i don't have the thinnest body. i can do just as much as anybody else, not to mention there's not a lot of black and brown yoga instructors. whether they can do every pose or not, i like for them to come and just feel comfortable in their bodies. don't worry about your neighbor or what they look like. just worry about you. >> a yoga instructor by trade, two years ago jade started holding weekly classes outside which, for some, like rebecca diggs, can be more comfortable than a traditional yoga studio. >> my previous experience, it was very fit, wonderful looking individuals. i didn't necessarily feel i fit in. here in this space with jade, i feel like i fit in, exactly who i am. >> to make it even more accessible, the classes are donation based.

>> traditionally in a yoga studio classes can be $18 to $20 for a drop in. for some people that's the difference between gas to work or picking your kids up. whatever people can give, just give. if you can't give it, still come to class. i don't want you to miss just because of that. >> rather than keeping that money, she spreads her sunshine by paying it forward, donating money to this nearby children's bookstore rohis readery which shares a familiar theme. >> it's very cool to read a book and see people like me. >> just like jade, the owner shares a mission of access and inclusion. >> every single book in here is reflective of historically marginalized community, whether it is black, indigenous, lbgqt +. we want to make sure stories are seen, valued and that there's always a sense of belonging and empowerment. >> when i come here, i want to have every single book in the bookstore. >> so far jade has donated more
