friday, january 26th. >> a lot to get to this morning. we want to start with a check of our forecast. andrew good morning. >> so our dry weather continues today. but the clouds are thickening this morning. so today is a mostly cloudy day. the reason why we have a warm front that you can see moving on to the west coast. the bulk of this moisture associated with the warm front stays away from us. it's really aimed at the pacific northwest. what we're getting out of it is the cloud cover this morning, and that will linger tomorrow as well. temperatures right now were basically in the upper 40s to the lower 50s, 53 in the city, 49 in palo alto. good morning. 50 in concord, 51 right now in santa rosa. so we'll take a look at the forecast today. we'll keep it mostly cloudy throughout the entire day, but that warm front will allow temperatures above average will get you into the 60s for afternoon highs. but record warmth is coming our way for part of the weekend. we'll show you that coming up in about six minutes. let's say hi to gloria and see how the commute is going. >> good morning. so far, the commute is going pretty well out there, drew. and check out this live look from our bay bridge toll plaza camera right now. you

can see there are no waits at the pay gates. people are flowing through there, zipping through pretty quickly, and then the metering lights, they did flip on at 539, but it's not as busy as it usually is because of course, that lighter friday traffic. and right here, here's a look at your drive times for this morning. so far, the usual slow spot from tracy to dublin 33 minutes reggie aqui. >> thank you gloria. for the first time since a door panel blew off a plane, alaska says some of its boeing 737 max nine jets are ready for takeoff. if the planes to resume some flights today. abc seven news reporter lena howland live at sfo this morning. lena. >> reggie. good morning. many of those grounded 737 max. nine that have been grounded could be back in the air as early as today for alaska airlines, but that doesn't come without some added scrutiny from federal regulators. the faa put out its final instructions for airlines to make sure those planes are repaired and safe. that includes a 12 hour inspection process for airlines to inspect max nines,

the agency laying out an enhanced maintenance process which will require, among other things, an inspection of specific bolts, guide tracks and fittings, and detailed visual inspections of left and right mid-cabin exit door plugs. the agency says the process was developed by what they learned from inspections of 40 grounded planes. the ceo of alaska airlines telling nbc this week that many of the planes they inspected had loose bolts that are supposed to secure the door plug. >> each of the airlines will make sure that these four bolts are properly installed and tightened. boeing will be helping wherever necessary, but each of these airlines knows that their reputation is on the line to make sure that those airplanes are safe to fly. >> here's a look at some video boeing shared with us, showing a quality standdown happening inside of a 737 max nine production facility in washington state yesterday. boeing says thousands of workers paused work as the company held

work sessions to focus on quality and safety. meanwhile, united says they are preparing to put their 737 max nines back into service starting on sunday, and this issue is still being felt here at sfo with more than 45 cancellations so far this morning. live at sfo, lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right. thanks so much, nina. >> in the north bay, rohnert park police are investigating a deadly shooting in the parking lot of a shopping center. it happened at 630 last night, and the lot on golf course drive. there's a walmart and a see's candies in that shopping center. officers say when they got there, they found a man who'd been shot. they did cpr, but he died. police haven't released any details about a suspect. a second body has been recovered in that deadly plane crash off the coast of half moon bay. the coroner has identified the body as that of 26 year old oakland resident cassidy ray pettit. pettit died along with her fiance, lochie ferrier, and two

other people. when they're plane went down january 14th. pettit and ferrier were just two weeks away from being married. federal investigators say it was a small home built plane. the cause of the crash is being investigated. police say the two suspects involved in the shooting of an alameda county sheriff's deputy in union city are dead. >> we first brought you the story yesterday morning. swat team officers discovered the bodies of a man and a woman inside a business on dow avenue overnight. after hours of negotiations. at first, police claimed both suspects died from self-inflicted injuries. but they later walked that back, saying the deaths are still under investigation. the wounded deputy is still recovered. >> oakland is facing another disappointing headline, according to the new citywide crime report, violent crime rose 21% last year. rob threes, burglaries, vehicle thefts all increased as well. it's coming as oakland is nearing one year without a permanent police chief. mayor shengtao fired former police chief laurent armstrong last february. an

interim chief has led that department since then. now in december, mayor tao rejected a list of three finalists submitted by the police commission, effectively restarting that process of finding a new chief. >> i do believe that the city of oakland deserves the best of the best, and if we can just name one person to be chief of the police department and think that you know crime is going to go away, that's not how it works. we have to ensure that we have the right person in this role. >> open recruitment for a new chief is happening right now. february is the evaluation period. march 1st. the final names will be sent to mayor tao. she will then decide who to hire . this morning there's an update on the effort to recall mayor tao today. the recall campaign will take the next step, posting an official notice in a newspaper called the intercity express. organizers have formed a recall campaign committee. they plan to start collecting signatures next month and hope to gather 25,000 signatures to present to the city. a first

overnight, a new method of execution used for a death row inmate in alabama. the convicted murderer was put to death using nitrogen gas and gloria. the state says it's humane, but a lot of people disagree. >> kumasi critics of this method of execution have called it cruel and experimental. the supreme court rejected a bid to stop it late last night. justice sonia sotomayor writing a dissent, saying that alabama is using kenneth smith as a, quote, guinea pig. smith was on death row after being convicted of killing a preacher's wife in 1988, in a murder for hire plot. alabama made the decision to use nitrogen gas after their first attempt to execute smith by lethal injection was botched. smith's spiritual adviser witnessed the execution and described the moments when he died. >> she is one of the three methods of execution, so the inmates choose it then. that's the method we will use.

in 2021, has flown its last flight on the red planet. the 4 pound ingenuity chopper has logged 72 flights over the past three years, traveling 11 miles. that is 14 times farther than. planned. images sent back to earth show the helicopter's rotor blades were damaged during its last landing, and they no longer operate. so nasa says the mission has been so successful it plans to add two mini helicopters to a future mars mission. oh that's a bummer, but at least the future is bright. >> we'll take it. live doppler seven, along with satellite, we have a pretty strong storm out in the pacific. the moisture, though associated with it, is really aimed at the pacific northwest. for us, we're just seeing the tail end of a warm

union of northern california is a main opponent of this measure. the city of hayward just became the first in the nation to pull investment from companies that invest in israel. it's a protest against the country's response to the october 7th hamas terrorist attack, where 1200 people were killed and 240 others were taken hostage. now, four council members voted yes on that motion. two others and the mayor voted no. now, the four companies targeted are the caterpillar, intel, chevron, hyundai. the mayor says there was no time to review, vet or analyze the policy before voting. and he adds, this vote can be reversed if we find what they're doing are good practices and good corporate responsibility. >> uh, then absolutely, we're going to reinstate them. >> hayward city council is not allowed to take a stand on international issues. so activists organized around the global bds movement, which uses boycotts, divestment and sanctions to protest israeli action in palestinian

territories. >> the department of justice and the security and exchange commission are now investigating the autonomous car company cruise. it follows october's incident where a cruise vehicle dragged a pedestrian ■about 20ft in san francisco after that pedestrian was hit by another car cruise paused all operations on public roads in november after the dmv revoked the company's permits. cruise says it is fully cooperating in all investigations. if you use bart to commute, the agency wants to save you money, according to our media partner, the san francisco standard. there's a proposal to consolidate fare payments. when you transfer between agencies. so, for example, you can take bart but then get a discount next on muni. or maybe you go to the east bay. you can get a discount on ac transit. bart hopes to start the program when the new clipper card system rolls out later this year. bart s board could vote on that proposal next month. >> on the same day, he released his new single, justin timberlake confirmed he is

end to the week today. but that warm front is going to allow temperatures to go above average low and mid 60s for daytime highs. we'll keep the cloud cover tonight. you'll find those temperatures mainly in the low and mid 50s heading into the start of the weekend. now saturday those clouds are sticking around. here's future weather 8 a.m. it is a mostly cloudy morning out there. we do expect limited sunshine to start out the weekend. saturday evening. future weather is trying to bring us a light, isolated shower, but the bigger story is sunday. those clouds are out of here. the sunshine is back to finish out the weekend and those temperatures are really going to rise quickly in the wake of that warm front. here's a look at future tracker temperatures showing you on sunday. we're going into the 60s and mid 70s now. a lot of records on sunday are in the upper 60s and lower 70s, and that's where a lot of us are going to flirt for daytime highs. i think san jose is a really good chance of setting new records. even oakland santa rosa, it is just going to be a warm end to the weekend, which

the san francisco bay ferry, the departures today from san francisco to richmond have been canceled. so that's your latest update. we'll keep monitoring this for you today and see if there's any other updates on mass transit. kumasi gloria, new this morning, the united nations top court has ruled on south africa's allegations that israel is committing genocide in gaza. >> the international court of justice stopped short of ordering a cease fire, but it is demanding israel to try and contain the number of deaths there. the court decided not to throw out the case and ordered six provisional measures to protect palestinians in gaza. but this decision is just an interim one. it could take years for the full case to be considered. israel denies the accusation of genocide for the first time since a door panel blew off a plane, alaska airlines says it plans to safely resume flights of some of its boeing 737 max nine jets today. >> the faa, faa has cleared the way to do so, abc seven news reporter lena howland is at sfo. lena reggie.

>> with the first of their 737 max nine fleet, um, set to resume flying today. alaska airlines says that they will be adding more of these planes back into service every day as more inspections are completed and each aircraft is deemed worthy. all of this, following three weeks of investigations into that door plug that flew off the alaska airlines flight 6000ft into the air, effectively grounding nearly 200 of the boeing jets operated by both alaska and united and the faa and boeing sending out its final inspection instruction to the airlines to make sure those planes are repaired and safe. alaska says their first max nine flight will take off at 2:00 this afternoon from seattle to san diego. the airline says this grounding has cost them $150 million. >> it's for bolts properly installed, properly tightened, and if they're in and they're properly inspected, these airplanes are as safe as any

inside. surveillance video shows the suspect driving the child off near a warehouse complex in san leandro before driving away. police later found him and a second suspect at a bus stop in marin county. because the boy's mother left her phone in the car, she tracked it using the find my phone app. >> we're getting a look at a break in at a collectible store in san jose. tofu's trading. share the surveillance video from wednesday night of three people breaking in san jose. police officers responded. they say the suspects were already gone, and the store manager says the thieves took cash from the register and the actual register, and more than 35,000 pokemon cards each range from a buck to a few hundred dollars a special set of cards that is only released once a year comes out today. the store says the suspects most likely aren't aware of that rare collection. i don't think they were in the hobby necessarily because they didn't know what to take. >> a lot of stuff is releasing this week and we thought it was

funny or like, oh, these people don't realize that it released on friday, not like on wednesday at 2 a.m. the total cost of what they stole is still being calculated with insurance. >> we're getting a first look at a north bay nonprofit's new facility. san rafael mayor kate collins took the first swing, demolishing the walls of this former office building. the ritter center just broke ground on this new space that will provide expanded medical care and social services. it's replacing the existing location, which is a small yellow victorian house and several portables that have served clients for decades. >> here we'll be able to have medical, behavioral health services, food pantry, all of our housing assistance that we do for people all under one roof. they say that this new center will be able to serve 2000 more clients by 2028. >> however, getting people into permanent housing is still the priority. construction should be done by the end of the year. >> volunteers are spread out around sonoma county. right now.

they're doing the annual point in time count. it's a homeless census taken on a single day, getting an updated count of the homeless population is critical for federal funding. here are some pictures from san mateo county. volunteers went out before dawn yesterday to take a tally of the homeless there. alameda county also did its count yesterday about 450 volunteers fanned out across oakland, counting the number of individuals living in encampments and vehicles. contra costa county held its count wednesday. san francisco will do it next week. results will take a few months to be processed and released. >> contra costa county is already thinking about fire season. it announced itrillioneceived, a $3 million grant from cal fire, to create a fuel break that spans parts of lafayette and walnut creek. this money will go to the contra costa county fire protection district to help clear nearly 270 acres to prevent wildfires. >> we have the funding, we have an incredible hand. crews back there. we are able to get this work done. and i'm just very, very excited because with this wet winter, we seem to be having

cookies contain peanuts. they also say that they send their cookies to the grocery store, and that the store then repackages them with their own boxes and labels. orla's family attorney says her death was due to gross negligence and reckless conduct. because the manufacturer and or sellers did not properly identify the contents of the cookie on the package. >> in because orla was so vigilant and so careful with everything she touched, she actually googled soy nut, which is on the package, thinking wanting to make sure that a soy nut wasn't a nut. >> the cookies have been recalled and since they were sold in december, it's unlikely they are still around. peanuts are among nine major food allergens that federal law requires to be listed on food packaging. guys >> thank you gloria. coming up, the future of the struggling san francisco downtown mall still in question. the new management pledging to keep it open even as it continues to lose businesses, and a live look right now at the

number one, alaska airlines says some of its boeing 737 max nine planes could be back in the air as soon as today. these planes have been grounded since earlier this month, when a door plug blew off mid-flight. >> number two, the department of justice and the securities and exchange commission are now investigating the autonomous car company cruise. it follows october's incident when a cruise vehicle dragged a person in san francisco after they were hit by another car. >> number three san francisco based levi's, laying off 15% of its global workforce, which is more than 2700 people. levi expects the expects these cuts to save about $100 million this
