vehicles abandoned, some completely submerged. residents desperate for aid. >> you don't know where you'll be living after it's all over with. >> reporter: from oklahoma to illinois to new york, visibility severely limited causing dangerous driving conditions as well as grounding flights. watch as this plane disappears just a few seconds after takeoff. according to the national weather service, it's the most widespread fog advisory since 2005. visibility is less than quarter of a mile in some spots so you really have to be careful on the roads. there is no relief in sight, with another storm on the move. michael? >> victor, definitely have to be careful there. ginger here tracking it all for us. good morning. >> the fog has been so bad. that's not because you stayed up so late, eva. it is actually fog out there. for the fourth morning in a row in houston, they've got about half mile visibility.

let's see who else has got it this morning. all the way to philadelphia and baltimore fog advisories. that will be dense, less than quarter mile at a time. that could impact air travel and, of course, the roads. on the southern end of it, remember this comes from rain and warmth over relatively cold air an snow. you've got flash flood threats. still through the next two days. birmingham through the panhandle of florida tomorrow, severe storms possible, meaning damaging winds and tornados. that goes into western north carolina, eastern tennessee, too. as it moves east, it will be heavy rain for i-95 especially sunday, then wrap around snow. we'll try to get some snow on the back side of that meaning anywhere from toledo to cleveland right through the catskills looks like the heaviest. so we are going to get some snow, but not here at the coast. >> thank you for that, ginger. >> thank you for that, ginger. we're going to get the latest on donald trump. he took the stand in the civil trial to determine how much he must pay for defaming e. jean carroll. closing arguments and jury deliberation today. investigati

correspondent aaron katersky is at the courthouse this morning. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: good morning, george. donald trump's testimony ended almost as soon as it started during his few minutes on the witness stand here. he was more restrained than we've seen him. now the jury is about to get the case. the jury will begin deciding whether former president trump must pay e. jean carroll millions for defaming her after she accused him of sexual assault. testifying in his own defense, trump was asked whether he stood by the comments he made about carroll in a 2022 deposition where he called carroll a liar and her story a hoax. trump said he stood by those comment 100% yes. carroll said his remarks made her hated by a lot more people and caused death threats. on the witness stand, his attorney asked trump, did you ever instruct anyone to hurt ms. carroll in your statements? no, trump replied. i just wanted to defend myself, my family and, frankly, the presidency. trump testified for all of three minutes. the judge spent more time telling him what he couldn't say.

he had >> leah: been found liable for sexual assault and defamation. the judge told trump there would be no do-overs. carroll is seeking at least $10 million in damages. her lawyer said the defamation has not stopped. they accuse trump of trashing and threatening and assaulting her well over 100 times during the trial. trump is expected back here today for the closing arguments. he cancelled an appearance in arizona so he could be here, choosing the courtroom over the campaign trail. george, one more note from a different courtroom. trump's former aide, peter navarro, sentenced to four months in prison for contempt of congress. george? >> aaron, trump's statement was brief from the stand but even some of those words were stricken by the judge that the jury had to disregard them? >> reporter: they were. they went beyond the bounds of what the judge said trump could say since he's already been found liable of sexually assaulting and defaming e. jean carroll. the judge put up pretty strict guardrails and even in his short

time on the witness stand, trump defied even those. george? >> okay, aaron, thank you very much. let's bring in rachel scott now. former president trump is pressuring republican legislators to tank negotiations over the border and aid to ukraine. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: good morning, george. after months of negotiations, democrats and republicans have signaled they are closer to reaching a deal on how to address the crisis at our southern border. but all of that could be thrown into doubt by one man, donald trump. he's weighing in. he is urging republicans to reject any compromise here, saying they should not accept a deal unless they get every single thing they want. the former president clearly has an eye on the november election, preparing for a possible rematch with joe biden. sources tell us that behind closed doors mitch mcconnell told his conference that all of this puts republicans in a bind saying they don't want to do anything to undermind trump's campaign but said they have a job to do here.

republicans who have been deeply involved in these negotiations are outraged by this, acknowledging that it will make getting any deal across the finish line more difficult. >> this isn't the first time he's asserted himself into congress. won't be the last. >> reporter: we know trump finds ways to insert himself into everything from speaker's battle to aid to ukraine. he has frequent conversations with mike johnson on all areas of policy. george? >> thank you. eva? >> now reality check on the economy. elizabeth schulze spoke to treasury secretary janet yellen on if the country will see a recession. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, eva. the american economy is once again defying expectations. new data from the commerce department shows gdp, which measures spending from government, from consumers and businesses, grew at a rapid 3.3% rate from october through december. that was much higher than expected. it caps off a year that most economists predicted would end in a recession. and in this critical election year, treasury secretary janet

yellen told us she does not see any signs the momentum in the economy is stopping. >> we have an economy that has been growing at a good healthy pace. i see no reason why that can't continue. i think 2024 is going to be a very good economic year. >> reporter: but no reason right now why there would be a recession this year? >> there's no obvious reason why there would be. >> reporter: now, yellen acknowledged that many house holds still are not feeling the strong economic numbers. she pointed to persistently high costs for rent and for food. even as those prices are broadly cooling she said they will not go back down in a healthy economy to prepandemic levels. george? >> okay elizabeth. thanks. now an effort to free the hostages held in gaza. head of the cia set to travel to europe to broker an agreement. matt gutman is tracking the war from tel aviv. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, george. cia director burns is a sign of

talks are progressing. it was burns along with his counter parts back in november who helped broker that cease fire and hostage deal. but 100 hostages were released. almost all of them women and children. this deal at this stage in the war is very different, much more complicated, would include senior citizens, adult male, women, israelis and soldiers. it's believed 100 hostages are still alive including six americans. the offer, as we are being told is for a two month cease fire in exchange for a phased release of the hostages. it's unclear if israel would go back to fighting afterwards. it's part of this huge push by the white house, which included multiple special envoys to the region in recent days. but i'm told this deal is so very complicated that even if it were signed today, which it's not, it would take a couple of weeks to implement. michael? >> all right, matt. thank you for bringing that to us. we're going to turn to king charles who was admitted to the hospital for surgery. maggie rulli has the latest from london. good morning, maggie. >> reporter: hey, michael.

good morning. just a few hours ago the king's motorcade pulled up outside the hospital and both he and the queen arrived in what the palace is calling, quote, a scheduled treatment. you might remember last week the palace announced charles would be under going surgery for an enlarged prostate and will be taking some time off from his royal duties. it is very rare to get this level of medical information from the royals like this, but the palace said that charles had really wanted to raise awareness about prostate issues in men. just today the palace released a statement saying his majesty would like to thank all of those who have sent their good wishes over the past week and is delighted to learn that his diagnosis is having a positive impact on public health awareness. michael? >> it is good he's bringing more public awareness to it. charles is also having this procedure at the same hospital where his daughter-in-law kate is recovering from abdominal surgery. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, michael. we understand both charles and

camilla visited their daughter-in-law kate at the hospital this morning. while it is rare to have two royals in the hospital like this, it does make sense from a security standpoint that they're both in this hospital behind me. it is so rare to have two senior members of the royal family in the hospital at the same time like this. now, guys, we all have been watching and hoping good things for kate. we do understand that the palace initially said she would be in the hospital for 10 to 14 days. today is day 10. she has asked for privacy. her team has been very tight lipped but did say she's doing well. we can all send her good wishes hope she's on her way home soon, get home to her family and those three little kids of hers. guys? >> we wish them both a full recovery. thank you very much for that. now to that church collapse in connecticut. video captured the steeple toppling which appears to go into the rest of the church. trevor ault joins us with the latest developments. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, eva. so congregations use this church. they help with meals for the community.

while officials say there were no warning signs here, you saw this is on video, that steeple comes crashing down. this morning investigators looking into exactly how this historic church in downtown new london, connecticut, crumbled to the ground. >> possible explosion. caller does need help. >> reporter: the roof and steeple toppling in the middle of the day, covering the streets in dust. >> the church went down! >> reporter: built in the 1850s, here's what it looked like just moments earlier. now this. lester harris had just parked his car across the street. >> i heard this boom sound. i looked to my left. there was the church all in one piece but then it just collapsed right down the middle. >> reporter: miraculously, the one person who was inside the building at the time escaped without injury. >> you can count the luck involved in this a million ways. the city was extremely fortunate in the manner of the collapse. it could have been a much bigger disaster for us.

>> reporter: so as we're hearing from the mayor there, the church had routine fire inspections. it's unclear though if there's been any recent structural inspections. as eva pointed out, it is fortunate that the building caved in rather than toppling on to the street. could have put a lot more people at risk. >> sure is. thank you very much. the latest on alaska airlines. and the boeing max. the airlines said that some planes are cleared for takeoff three weeks after the door plug blew off this plane. we're gonna see it right there. transportation correspondent gio benitez is here with the story. good morning, gio. >> reporter: good morning everyone. exactly three week since that terrifying alaska airlines flight. like you said, george, today alaska is putting some max 9's back in the air. we all remember the blowout this month aboard the boeing 737 max 9. the door plug flying off the plane 16,000 feet in the air. the faa and boeing sending final inspection instructions to the airline. alaska's first max 9 flight this afternoon 2 p.m. from seattle to san diego. now, the airline said the max 9 grounding cost the company $150 million. also new this morning, for the first time ever, yesterday

boeing shut down its entire 737 factory for 15 hours. mechanics, quality inspectors and engineers standing down to focus exclusively on quality control, visually inspecting those work areas there. united is also putting its max 9's back in the air by sunday. of course, we're looking at those max 9's, all of them drawing in february. you'll still have some cancelled flights in the next weeks. >> that's good. full inspections on all of them. >> that's what they're doing right now. >> thank you for that, gio. eva is on her second cup of coffee. she stayed up late last night. exclusively with gma never before seen pictures and videos of their 21-year-old daughter. >> you can season with these. you can't really season with them, but you can cook with them. i know that's in front of the tower. >> yeah. >> this is the university of idaho tower. the family waiting on the full digital copy of her phone from authorities. >> these are the last moments of your child's life and you're sitting here fighting with somebody who doesn't care. >> reporter: they were able to collect some of kaylee's belongings from the university over the summer, which raised concerns about how well possible evidence was processed, including a trash can from kaylee's room that was full and appeared untouched. >> we opened it. there was an old squeezey applesauce thing that you would give to a toddler. it did not appear to have been gone through. >> reporter: police saying they had gathered more than 100 pieces of physical evidence from the scene along with some 4,000 photos and 3-d scans of the residence.

still frustration mounting for the family over what they consider a lack of communication and a rush to tear down the home on king road. christie describes for the first time how kaylee was found. >> it's my understanding kaylee was kind of sitting up and had fought. >> yes. >> yep. and the way that room is put together, if you come through that door, you can't get out of that room. >> completely trapped. >> yeah. >> you're in a bed. >> the bed was the entire room. you could barely open up the door without swiping the foot of the bed. it was wall to wall. the head board was up against the wall, sides were against the wall. you can imagine kaylee in an upright sort of position up in the corner slumped. she was trapped. >> reporter: the home on king road was torn down in the predawn hours of december 28th. now the first of the two

two years ago he was the last pick in the draft. this year he's an mvp finist. but the story of the season is the detroit lions. the last time they made it this year was january 12th of 1992. for context, on that date the number one song was "black and white" by michael jackson. hook was one of the top movies at the box office. texting hadn't even been invented yet. i was still five months from being born. it's been awhile since the lions have gotten this far. now they're just one win away from their first super bowl appearance. >> lot of excitement there. kind of drives our weight to go back to its heaviest level because it doesn't like the feeling of starvation. there's a reward center which wants more, so it keeps us feeling hungrier and less full. pound for pound if you take someone's who's at their ideal weight versus someone who's lost weight to get to the same weight, the person who used to be obese will feel hungrier, less fuel and burn fewer calories. that programming starts in the brain. >> if somebody loses 5 pounds or 50 pounds, it doesn't really matter, but what are strategies if they feel like they are starting to gain it back? >> that's a real thing. i look at four pillars. it starts with what kind of food we're eating. not only the food, but how big the portion? why are you eating? when are you eating? what kind of food? when you look at activity, similar questions. what kind of exercise are you doing? how much? how often? they all have different goals and different targets and different results. sleep is critical. we've talked about that before. not just how many hour, but the quality.

then obese med since. there are people who take over the counter or prescription medications. they need to take the medications, but weight gain is a side effect. >> this is one of your specialties. what would you say one thing get kwroefrs looked when people are dealing with managing their weight? >> the stigma and psychology behind this. there's so much fat shaming in this country. there's shame and stigma against those who've had surgery or take weight loss medications. that needs to stop. these are chronic conditions. no different from treating blood pressure or diabetes. it requires a lifestyle behavior all modifications as well as medication and in some cases surgery. >> it's not just one thing. >> absolutely not. >> thank you. as always, appreciate you. now time for pop news with sam. what a treat, sam. >> i don't know, michael. snuggle up to the screen, pop newsers. here we go. we begin with justin timberlake. it's scientifically proven he can bring sexy back. but now this morning,

digging deeper into what it means to be a builder. no word yet on when j. lo's take on bob the builder will hit theaters, but it's in the works. finally, i just saw this. i know you all have dogs. there are moments when you're with your dog and they do something wonderful. here's one. a howling good discovery by a rottweiler named emma who lives in toronto. on a walk earlier this week with her parents, emma discovered a giant ball in the sky. now scientifically that's how i describe the moon. that's what she saw when she saw the moon. take a look. it's not a bird she's looking at. nothing else but the moon. emma's adorable reaction to the moon going viral. the problem is, how do you take her for a walk now? she'll never be able to get that ball. [ laughter ] right? so what do you do? >> go out when it's sunny? >> all right.

>> it wasn't really that easy. i couldn't find that much. his third wife was named joanna carson. half the time when i looked her up, i didn't know if i was going to get joanne or joanna. i did find one interview she had done. i think for some kind of public access or something. i watched that. she was also friends with ally sheedy, who i did breakfast club with, and annie potts, who i did pretty in pink with. they were both friends with her. >> she took truman in after he had the fight with everybody else? >> that's right. joanne had divorced johnny and truman had been dropped by all the swans so they were a little bit outcast together. i also think that she was really the one person in his life that seemed to love him unconditionally. i think she really believed in him as a writer and really as a literary genius and really tried to help facilitate that. >> take a look at a clip. >> hi, honey. >> oh, hi. i come bearing gifts.

[ laughter ] hats off to her. tremendous person and professional. >> you worked together in barbie. she called you her emotional support actor. what was it like working together? >> she's great. i think trying something new is uncomfortable. she's a successful live entertainer and she was trying something new. she was vulnerable enough to say that she was nervous. i listened and we shared a bond, both being live entertainers. we started to talk. we'd shoot and then wait for a lot. when i hear something like that, it makes me happy.

she's a wonderful person. makes me realize that she was listening to what i had to say. i certainly was listening to her. man, she has earned all of her success. she's a great human being. >> we were listening to you earlier this week when you talked about retiring in the near future from the wwe. >> you know. >> how do you know when you feel like it's time to retire? >> it's something you may be able to relate to. you want to get out before you lose the fastball. you want to still be able to contribute to the team. i feel at 47 my body feels good. i feel healthy. i'm great. not going through any tables anytime soon. the 33-year-old social media sensation says he's on a mission to spread library joy. >> the joy of the library might be universal language. >> mychal got his first library card when he was 5 and works in the same library he frequented as a kid. >> my mom was the one who introduced us to the library. brought us into all the programs. encouraged us to check out books we would fall in love with. >> now he shares his daily interactions with library goers on social media. >> one person says, can you please help? my kid doesn't like to read. so i turned to this kid and say, everybody struggles differently. everybody's struggle is real. >> but mychal does more than make reading exciting. >> we got books. i'm a book pusher. i'm a library card pusher. we got graphic novel, comic books. >> he's also a mental health advocate. an open book about his own struggles. >> i check in on their mental health. showing them their anxiety belongs in the library. they don't have to leave it

outside. >> that kindness and positivity sparking library joy in everyone he reaches one tale at a time. >> books, books, books, everybody! yes! >> mychal embodying his energy, is joining us here. last time we were here we were talking about how to get kids away from screens into books. the genius of what you've done is figure out how to marry the screen with the book to use the screens to get kids into books. where did you come up with the idea and how did you decide to do it? >> libraries and screens, they go together. social media is where kids are. they want to be you tube creators. they want to be tik tok stars. but they also want to be book worms. i thought to myself, let's bring them together. let's use the bob ross and arthur reed and spread library joy for kids and all people. >> when you meet a new kid, how do you -- first of all, why is it so important to get the right book into the right kid's hands? how do you go about finding out what that right book is when you meet a kid?

>> there's a book for every kid, every person. i love to use their attire. just like i am wearing a cat shirt. kids will wear paw patrol. they'll wear batman. spider-man. i say, what do you want to read next? then we start that journey together. >> do the kids come in wanting books or do you have to convince them that this is where it's at? >> a lot of times i do have to convince them. there are many times they are reluctant readers. people come in and say, i want my kid to be a reader. i'm like, okay. let's make this personal. let's figure out where we can go. let's show them how vast the library world is. how many options there are for whatever they love more than anything in the world. >> you just received the american library associations i love my librarian award. that must be fulfilling. >> it's amazing. i'm a true library kid. i was home schooled at my local library. i never thought i would become a librarian, let alone librarian of the year. i'm so blessed. it's amazing. >> we hear a lot of stories about book ban, cutting funding, getting the right book into the right kid's hands.

what are the good parts? sell the librarian profession to me. >> the best part about working for the library is it is for everybody. the mentally ill, the housed, unhoused, those speaking spanish, everyone belongs in a library. the library is always there for you. if you have a library card, get one. people show me their card like it's costco. i'm like, you don't need to do that. thank you for coming into the library. thank you for being here. >> you have a lot of friends that want to make sure the work keeps on going. random house and scholastic are joining forces to get your library $10,000. >> wow! that's amazing. >> yep. and that's not the end. one of the top questions you get is where you get your amazing shirts. >> he buys them off the rack. >> i hear he buys them from old navy. we have a bunch of shirts for you as well as a girth certificate for $500 so you can buy more shirts. >> thank you so much.
