person was pronounced dead at the scene. the incident started at about 10:00, when a state park officer tried to pull over a car involved in a carjacking in tahoe city. investigators say the driver sped off in that car until it crashed. >> my understanding on the collision is that it was our officers vehicle collided with the uh- subject's vehicle. >> this is the second notable incident in the area this month. back on january 10th, a man was killed and three others injured when an avalanche struck at the resort in the east bay. >> mayors from alameda and contra costa counties met with county supervisors and law enforcement agencies today, all of it in an effort to tackle crime together. abc seven news reporter anser hassan spoke to the mayor of berkeley, who initiated that meeting. crime is an issue that doesn't stop at one city's borders or one county's borders. >> this is a regional challenge. >> that challenge runs along the i-80 corridor from richmond to berkeley, down through the rest of alameda county, says berkeley

mayor jesse arreguin. >> organized retail theft, for example. what happens in emeryville or oakland impacts berkeley. it impacts richmond, uh, and while our law enforcement agencies work together, there's definitely an opportunity for more collaboration. mayor arreguin led a meeting on friday to resurrect the east bay public safety corridor, an initiative from the 1990s formed to combat crime. >> it roughly encompasses richmond down to fremont along the i-80 and 8-80 corridors. mayors supervisors, and law enforcement agencies from both alameda and contra costa counties, along with the fbi and bart, were on hand for this opening round of discussion. aragon hopes collaboration will lead to more data sharing and more uniform policies. different cities have no chase policies, and so say, you know, one one law enforcement agency is chasing somebody who's engaged in serial retail theft through one city. >> and then when they go to another city, it doesn't have a no chase policy. it makes it hard to coordinate and to and to

hold people accountable. >> crime doesn't see boundaries. alameda police chief nishant joshi took part in the meeting. >> he says local law enforcement already works collaboratively. but, he adds, uniting with city and county government can improve those efforts. >> while law enforcement is one resource, we want to force multiply with all the resources that can have an impact on public safety, mayor aragon says public safety isn't just about more policing, but also strengthening violence prevention and tackling mental health issues, he adds. >> working as a region may prove more powerful in sacramento. i think rather than us all. launching our own things, working together, we we're going to be more effective and probably more competitive at being able to draw down state and federal resources. a more formal partnership will be announced in the coming weeks in the east bay anser hassan abc seven news. >> oakland's largest employer is warning its employees to be vigilant in the face of rising crime. kaiser permanente says it's committed to ensuring the safety and security of its employees and physicians across

all its locations. the san francisco chronicle is reporting kaiser employees are being told to stay in their buildings for lunch and not to hold meetings in downtown oakland. in addition , blue shield of california says it's paying for ride shares for employees to get to the office, along with on site parking. also in oakland, critics of mayor shengtao are ready to take the next steps in the recall effort today. >> recall organizers posted official notice of the effort in the newspaper. inner city express. they plan to begin gathering signatures next month. 25,000 registered voters need to sign in order to get the recall on a ballot. >> san francisco mayor london breed says the moratorium on street vending in the mission district is making the area safer and cleaner. it's an issue abc seven has been covering for months. the mayor's office issued a report today. there's been a 30% decrease in assaults and robberies combined since the moratorium went into effect. the report also claims there's been a 23% decrease in requests for street cleaning. the mayor is also hailing a survey of business owners, in which 56%

say they feel the corridor is now safer and 76% want the moratorium to continue. for now. the city implemented the temporary moratorium on vending to combat the sale of illegal goods in november. it expires next month. licensed vendors are against it, saying it hurt them financially. >> new details tonight on another iconic san francisco store shutting its doors for good. geoffrey's toy store, which has operated in the city for 86 years, says it will close permanently next month. the store opened back in 1938 and also served as an inspiration for pixar's hit movie toy story. the store's owners say it has been a struggle to keep the doors open, blaming the decline of the downtown area, consumer spending and shifting retail trends. >> downtowns across the bay area are struggling to recover from the pandemic, but san jose is thriving. what's being done there that other cities could use to build a better bay area? abc7 news south bay reporter zach fuentes got some answers. >> it's been a big week filled

with positive headlines coming from downtown san jose. we're just seeing so much more vibrancy. >> we're at 110% foot traffic compared to covid. when you take 2019 numbers, 2023 saw a series of block parties and events that drove large amounts of that foot traffic. >> now, in the last week alone, the san jose city council voted in favor of officially making the popular san pedro square a pedestrian mall. that news, coming after years of temporary measures to keep the road closed since the start of the pandemic. yeah the next day saw the grand opening of the much talked about san jose downtown food hall, featuring 26 restaurants under one roof, attracting many first time entrepreneurs like shabana sarang. >> i just saw it and i just fell in love with it and it was like love at first sight for me and i just knew it was where i wanted to start. while officials are banking on the food hall and san pedro square's pedestrian mall model to bring in more foot traffic, they say the work can't stop there right now. >> the downtown boost is mostly because of nightlife. the goal

is to grow traffic during the daytime, too. it's still slower and more quiet in downtown during the week, but that is changing as well. >> so more and more companies are asking their workers to at least come back three times a week or so. >> in the meantime, a new pilot project is in the very early stages of development, one that aims to add more vibrancy to the stretch of downtown between fourth and market streets. >> we're trying to make property owners beautify their buildings with paint, paint them, add some lighting to it. the downtown association says it will be a challenge to get all the property owners on board, but they're optimistic. >> they say it's that collaborative spirit that has led to the recent success and can be a model for downtown's and other bay area cities. >> we have various agencies. we have the city that is very interested in revitalizing downtown. we have property owners that are super passionate and involved all of this is what it takes to move the needle. and i think this is a recipe for other areas to stimulate as well in san jose. >> zach fuentes abc seven news. >> all right. we are now just

two days away from the nfc championship game at levi's stadium. and as the 40 niners get ready to host the detroit lions, there may be some good news about the status of deebo samuel. abc seven news sports anchor casey pratt was at practice today. he joins us live now from santa clara. casey, give us some good news. >> yeah. deon, everything just wrapped up in here. it is our last chance to see the 40 niners until the nfc championship game. but i can tell everybody right now are sigh of relief. deebo samuel will be on the field. that's not a prediction. it's a spoiler. it is going to happen. they called it a fast friday. so we don't get to see too much of what they do on the field. but deebo was out there again running, smiling, laughing, looking good every body very positive about his status, a full practice, no injury designation and a very, very relieved brock purdy >> for us, you know deebo is a game changer. you know he's the

one of the best in the nfl at what he does. so obviously for him to be able to play all of us are like all right you know deebo brings some juice and energy and we got his back and so uh obviously seeing him run around at practice and look good for us, it's like all right, you know it's on. so we're excited for him. uh it's huge. >> i mean, um, a little scary at the beginning of the week, but the fact is we able to go full go today, and no restrictions on him is definitely a good thing for us. >> just to know, i have an extra week just to figure out what was going on. and we went and got an mri and everything showed up negative and it was just a deep bruise and it was kind of painful at the time. but as the week goes on, you know, like i just said, i'm doing a good job getting all the pain away, getting all my motion and strength back. and i feel like they did an outstanding job. >> now, when asked how deebo plans to protect that injured shoulder, he said, i ain't protecting nothing. he is ready to go. he's fired up. he's been having fun in the last two days on the field and with his

unity mural has been on display at sfmoma. it's been on loan for two years from city college of san francisco, so the work is now coming down to make way for a new exhibit. its final home will be a new performing arts center, which has yet to be built in the meantime, it will be stored on the city college campus. the city of alameda is a step closer to accessing millions of gallons of recycled water. >> the army corps of engineers and east bay mud have both signed an agreement that will provide $3.2 million in federal funds. the money will be used to repurpose a half mile of water pipeline between oakland and alameda. >> this innovative water

degrees. sunny and springlike i wish i could predict a win for the niners. fourth quarter 63 degrees coming. football weather fair skies at levi's stadium. it is going to be warm, so make sure you have plenty of fluids. and of course your sunscreen and your shades. here's a look at the high temperatures on sunday versus records. these are just some of the cities. there will be other cities as well that will likely go down in the record books. now, if all goes as planned and it warms up as much as we're expecting. santa rosa expected to hit 74 degrees uh- napa, 7172, in livermore, sfo san jose likely to be records. so let's take a look at live doppler seven. the rain is going into the pacific northwest. strong storm off the coastline. we're just getting the cloud cover and a few sprinkles around here. so if you are out and about, don't be surprised if you need to use a windshield wiper. a little bit 50s and 60s on your temperatures, right now. another stunning sunset from san jose camera tonight. tomorrow cloudy, a few showers sunday is warmer. records are likely and mid to

late next week. a wet pattern is setting up. so let's talk about tonight. if you are stepping out for friday night plans. a lot of cloud cover at 7:00. there will be some isolated sprinkles and then we head into 7 p.m. tomorrow night. you see a few showers trying to cross san francisco. so parts of the north bay and the peninsula, and then it lifts northward. tomorrow night, and then really a little sprinkle or two sunday at 3 a.m. look at the clouds just completely move out of the picture. by 3:00. you're seeing mainly sunny skies in the south bay when the niners host the lions. so really nice looking weather in terms of rainfall taking you into sunday. a few hundredths of an inch to perhaps 16 hundredths of an inch in novato. this is not a game changer for any of your weekend activities, so keep that in mind. your morning temperatures in the 40s and the 50s tomorrow afternoon it's going to be a cloudy one to mostly cloudy one. high temperatures will be in the low to upper 60s for that day. now we take a look at our rain chances while they're minimal

for saturday and sunday and really isolated going into monday. look at what happens tuesday night into wednesday and thursday. rain chances really going up as a wet pattern is going to set up. looks like an atmospheric river coming our way. 10:00 tuesday night. we have a chance of a few showers, but it's really wednesday that we're going to see some widespread rain. sierra will go from rain to snow mix to then eventually by thursday, just snow falling. we are expecting scattered showers to continue to pretty much through the end of the workweek. going into the first part of the weekend, so it is looking like a stretch of wet weather. concerns are rapid rises on streams and creeks, with the kind of rain we're expecting. the ground is already saturate. and so the key here is getting that chance to dry out before the next series of storms. but we do expect the potential for shallow landslides now. rainfall projections through saturday. you will notice here in the bay area, we're looking at one to over two inches of rain. higher totals in the northern part of the state. accuweather seven day forecast
