a man near a popular tahoe ski resort following a chase and crash. good evening. i'm ama daetz this whole thing started in tahoe city around ten this morning. police say they were responding to a carjacking and tried to pull the vehicle over. it ended with a crash near the olympic village inn and the suspect got out. they say he was carrying a knife. according to california state parks. a state parks police officer tried to stop a vehicle that was involved in a carjacking in tahoe city about seven miles away. the chase ended in a crash here in the palisades tahoe parking lot. it's unclear why the chase led here. the state park spokesperson didn't have any information on that or who this

driver was, state parks says. after the crash here, the driver got out of the car armed with a knife. that's when the state parks police officer shot him. >> officers provided medical aid to the subject, but despite their efforts again, the subject succumbed to his injuries and the public again is avoid is advised to avoid this area as the investigation is ongoing. >> the shooting happened in a corner of palisades tahoe's parking lot, not immediately near the resort area, so skiing and snowboarding went on as usual this morning. the resort did not close down. we did ask why the state parks peace officer was involved in this pursuit. >> we obviously do focus on california state parks. that's a responsibility. but we're also our officers. at least they are a part. they're sworn officers here in the state of california. so, you know, mutual aid that applies to them as well. they're trained officers just like chp has. they go to the academy. >> state parks does say the

supervisors may vote on it. new developments tonight. the high rise, where nearly 400 residents were displaced due to flooding last summer, is set to reopen again. the san francisco chronicle is reporting. the 35 story tower at 33 to james street, is now safe for re occupancy. tenants were forced out in june when a water main sent an estimated 20,000 gallons of water through the building. residents thought they would return in the fall, but a second flooding of the building caused further delays. new at 11. we are less than 48 hours away from the nfc championship game between the 40 niners and the lions. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez found places that are gearing up for the big game, as well as fans who are coming to town to watch the red and gold. >> the 40 niners faithful are traveling from all over the country ahead of sunday's nfc championship game at levi's stadium. >> i think this weekend they're going to they're going to come out and they're going to make a statement. nathan martin and his buddy rob johnson traveled from

quite a bit. andre lacy, the owner of san jose based loves brownies, will be pulling up with treats and cuban coffee tvs are better today, right? like the whole experience of being close to your own bathroom is always nicer. and i also think too, when people call the troc, they just don't want this mess in their house. we're super excited for this weekend, so love the fact that it's my team. love the fact that i'm a bay area native and you know, we're just ready in san jose. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> and officials are planning to close off multiple freeway off ramp sunday night in an effort to control potential revelers. take a look at this map. this shows the ramps that will be closed starting at 7:00 sunday night until midnight. officials say it's an effort to enhance public safety due to an expected increase in traffic. san francisco's oldest toy store is closing for good next month. jeffries toys first opened in san francisco in 1938. its co-owner says there are a number of factors leading to the closure now, including fewer people visiting downtown, the

store is located on kearny street in union square, a previous location on market street closed in 2015 because of a rent hike. jeffries also served as one of the inspirations for the hit movie toy story. many areas around the bay area have struggled with bringing back their downtown area since the pandemic, but one bay area city is making progress , one positive headline at a time. downtown san jose has seen a lot more foot traffic and vibrancy lately. much of this can be attributed to the measures taken by the city to boost the downtown area, like turning san pedro square into a full time pedestrian mall, and the recent opening of the san jose downtown food hall. >> we have various agencies. we have the city that is very interested in revitalizing downtown. we have property owners that are super passionate and involved all of this is what it takes to move the needle. and i think this is a recipe for other areas to simulate as well. the san jose downtown association says they hope to serve as a model for other bay

area cities with lunar new year just around the corner, san francisco's chinatown is lighting up with some new lanterns. >> but these aren't just any lanterns. they're a nod to the neighborhood's history with an artistic twist. here's abc seven news reporter tara campbell. >> ready? one, 223. look just like that, san francisco's chinatown lights up in a way never seen before. tonight we are unveiling a new lantern here on grant avenue. joanne lee is the executive director of edge on the square, a contemporary art hub in the heart of chinatown. you've probably seen kind of the iconic red lanterns that have been up and down grant avenue and other streets in chinatown. we commissioned a very special contemporary lantern to integrate with the existing red lanterns, commissioning bay area artist bree gibson to take on the project. >> i really was asked to merge contemporary art and still give

homage to the traditional culture and kind of create a bridge between the two, the oakland native taking great care in creating the new look lanterns. >> i really wanted to take special care and make sure that i. i gave nod to the work and really research, and it was really fascinating. and researching this community that i've been in so many times and spending a lot of time here. so i think that naturally trickled through the work as i made it. >> a lot of our programing here at edge on square is multigenerational, so it's thinking about honoring the heritage and the past and connecting it with the future. >> they are really at the cutting edge of avant garde art supervisor aaron peskin joining the night celebration, encouraging people to come check it out, especially ahead of lunar new year. they're welcoming people from far beyond chinatown. i mean, this is meant for the people of san francisco, asian, not asian, and for people around the bay area. >> one of our goals is to increase foot traffic and visitors to chinatown to, you

holocaust is never too far from his mind. ahead of international holocaust remembrance day on saturday, he invited us into a south bay home to discuss his journey of survival. >> i've always had a. anxiety. >> born in modern day poland in 1937, horowitz says his early childhood was tumultuous, as throughout world war two, he and his family fled throughout europe, living underground for several years in the netherlands to evade capture by the, being smuggled through belgium, france and spain before managing to get on a ship to south america. ultimately, in 1944, horowitz's family was able to immigrate to the us, setting up a home in north carolina. he says the difficult memories from those years in europe and the constant threat of being captured still haunt him. >> we came so close, so many times during our conversation, he recounted one especially terrifying time while fleeing through the woods of france, where his family encountered soldiers, an incident horowitz

says he was lucky to escape. a french girl came along and started talking to the soldiers and distracted them. whether she did it knowingly or not, i don't know, but she did. >> while horowitz and his parents counted themselves among the lucky ones who managed to escape persecution, he tells us not everyone in his family shared the same fortune. >> even my mother's parents died in concentration camps, and my mother's uncles and aunts died in concentration camps. my father lost two brothers and a sister and two nieces. horowitz went on to graduate from yale law school and have a successful career as an attorney. >> he these days, though, he spends time talking about his experiences during the holocaust. in december, he was even invited to speak at an event hosted at the home of the governor of north carolina, a testament to how far jews have come in the us. >> when i was a kid, you know, there were quotas for jews at

the universities. you were told, don't go to work for, you know, the dow 30 industrial company because there's a ceiling you won't advance. >> and on this international holocaust remembrance day, horowitz's message remains the same that kindness, equality and compassion are timeless. >> you would think that after a few thousand years of continuous war in the world, people would come to the realization that war really isn't very helpful in the south bay. >> tim johns abc seven news there's a new database of living holocaust survivors around the world. >> it was compiled by the conference on jewish material claims against germany. now, according to the claims conference, there are 245,000 holocaust survivors worldwide and about 1800 of them live in the san francisco bay area. a bronze statue of baseball icon jackie robinson was stolen from in front of a youth baseball league in wichita, kansas. the statue has stood in front of the

league facility since 2021, and was commissioned and with the approval of jackie robinson's widow, rachel, a nearby business caught security footage of the statue being placed in a pickup truck in the middle of the night. after the thieves cut it at the ankles. >> the statue i think the league 42 paid $50,000 for that statue, and i think that was at a discounted rate. so that statue can be upwards to maybe $100,000. the bronze statue, a life size statue of an american icon, jackie robinson. >> the program's director says the youth organization is named after jackie robinson, and that he's heartbroken because the statue represents so much to the league. a jury says former president donald trump must pay more than $83 million to a writer who sued him for defamation. former magazine columnist e jean carroll claims trump raped her in a department store more than 20 years ago, then defamed her when he denied her claim. it's the second time over the past year that a jury has awarded carroll millions of

dollars in damages from trump. he plans on appealing this decision on boeing 737 max. nine planes are back in the air weeks after being grounded by the federal aviation administration. the chief operating officer of alaska airlines joined passengers on a flight from seattle to san diego this afternoon. earlier this month, a door plug blew off a max nine in mid-flight. the faa is allowing each plane back in service after rigorous inspections. alaska plans to have all its 737 max nine planes flying again the week after next united airlines expects to start flying some of its planes on sunday. city and federal leaders want to raze parts of san francisco's embarcadere to prevent flooding from climate change. the $13 billion project would change the face of the waterfront seen here on drone view seven. not only would it elevate the road and the ferry building seven feet, it would also raise the shoreline from aquatic park to heron's head point. >> our future depends on taking action now. this is why the draft plan is so critical to

protecting the city's seawall from earthquake and flooding risks. >> the draft plan from the army corps of engineers shows how rising sea levels could damage the shoreline. city and federal leaders want to act quickly, taking public comment next year with a completion date of 2040. the federal government would fund about 65% of the project, and the rest would come from the city and the state. but some familiar lights dazzled visitors in san francisco tonight, these nine shrub sculptures from the entwined meadow installation are composed of hundreds of led lights. the installation moved to un plaza from golden gate park. the artist says you can control the lights from your phone as you walk through the exhibit. they are the latest additions to the un plaza's revitalization when it reopened in november, and now features a skate park, fitness court and games. and i think it sounds like it's going to be a pretty good weekend to get outside. let's check in with abc seven news meteorologist sandhya. sandhya >> absolutely. and i have seen that display in golden gate park

and it's just amazing. so yeah, really cool stuff. and i'll show you what else is amazing. check out the views from our tower cameras. a hint of what's to come from city hall to san francisco's uh- downtown area. coit tower the roof. you will notice it's all lit up in in red and gold for our niners from our san jose camera. we have a nice view. so here's a time lapse from our roof, camera and tonight it was just visibility was terrific. so we got a good chance to enjoy this view of coit tower. changing colors, getting into the spirit. let's talk about the niners forecast 62 degrees in the morning. i know some people are going to get their to tailgate. it is really going to be nice and warm by 3:00 72 degrees at kickoff 73. and then the temperature will really just drop slowly. but you notice those high clouds coming through from time to time. that's not going to really prevent the temperatures from going up. so be ready for it. you'll need extra water and your sunscreen or beverage of your

choice. take a look at the high temperatures versus the records for sunday. we are expecting at least a half a dozen or more cities to reach the record. santa rosa 74 degrees. previous record was 72. napa expected to tie san jose 75 degrees. the old record was 72. set back in 1928, so the asterisks there indicating likely we'll see some records as we look at live doppler seven while we get a chance to put the umbrellas away for the time being. uh- storm track and the strong storm has been aimed at the pacific northwest. we have seen a couple of sprinkles around tonight and on live doppler seven. still seeing a few to our north. that's still not out of the question as we head towards tomorrow. your temperatures right now really mild with 50 across the region. here's a look at the headlines. tomorrow. cloudy and a few showers. sunday. warmer records likely and mid to late next week. a wet pattern sets up. it's going to stick around for several days so be ready for that first thing tomorrow morning. a lot of cloud cover. couple sprinkles up to

our north as we head towards tomorrow night. i'll isolated showers showing up at at 1130 is our best opportunity in the north bay for seeing some quick moving showers that continues into early sunday and then those clouds will start to dissipate late and we will get a dry sunday afternoon. now through sunday morning, expecting a 10th of an inch or less in the northern part of our viewing area where we do see some showers, morning temperatures in the 40s and 50s. pretty mild tomorrow afternoon, low to upper 60s, but there's going to be quite a bit of cloud cover around as we fast forward to next week. here is the storm system tuesday night it gets closer. wednesday we have that storm coming through. it's going to be a statewide event with showers continuing off and on through friday. so when we go any maybe even into saturday when we go and look at the rainfall projections, about an inch, inch and a half, some of the higher elevations, looking at 2 to 3in of rain with the atmospheric river, the accuweather seven day forecast. tomorrow's cloudier, a couple of showers. not a game changer. sunday okay, well let's hope for

a win. the niners nfc championship game. it's going to be warm. there will be records around the bay area. and then temperatures slowly dial back on the late tuesday night. we have a chance. it's a level two storm on wednesday. wet and windy a one for thursday. and friday. but the important thing is it's soaked in sun in santa clara. so nice. really nice. okay >> thank you. sandhya.
