but first we begin with the weather. lisa is here. hey, how's it looking? good morning to you. well, we're mild, you know, we have 40s and 50s this morning. a lot of cloud covers starting out with live doppler seven, where you notice that the rainfall is pretty close to the north bay. so we could see a stray shower today, but that's about it. mainly cloudy skies, 55 in hayward. it is 54, in san francisco, and the cooler numbers in the north bay, 46 in sonoma, 44 in calistoga. so that keeps us cooler than we were yesterday. five degrees colder in santa rosa, where we are four degrees milder in oakland. look outside there from our exploratorium camera. so cloudy skies, limited sun today. there is a little bit of fog right now in santa rosa, and we'll see numbers climb through the mid and even upper 60s. we have even warmer weather on tap for your sunday, more sun and as much as 10 to 15 degrees above average. daetz on that and more rain coming our way. coming up stephanie, all right lisa, thank you. well, that shooting happened yesterday morning at

the olympic village in right near the ski resort. state park officials say an officer fatally shot a person who was armed with a knife that person was pronounced dead at the scene. police say they were responding to a carjacking and tried to pull the vehicle over, and ended with a crash right near as we mentioned, the olympic village and the suspect got away. they say he was carrying a knife. abc seven news anchor ama daetz has the details. according to california state parks, a state parks police officer tried to stop a vehicle that was involved in a carjacking in tahoe city, about seven miles away. >> the chase ended in a crash here in the palisades tahoe parking lot. it's unclear why the chase led here. the state park spokesperson didn't have any information on that or who this driver was, state parks says. after the crash here, the driver got out of the car armed with a knife. that's when the state parks police officer shot him. >> officers provided medical aid to the subject, but despite their efforts again, the subject succumbed to his injuries and

the public again is avoid is advised to avoid this area as the investigation is ongoing. >> the shooting happened in a corner of palisades tahoe's parking lot, not immediately near the resort area, so skiing and snowboarding went on as usual this morning. the resort did not close down. we did ask why the state parks peace officer was involved in this pursuit. >> we obviously do focus on california state parks. that's a responsibility. but we're also our officers. at least they are a part. they're sworn officers here in the state of california. so, you know, mutual aid that applies to them as well. they're trained officers just like chp has. they go to the academy. >> state parks does say the california highway patrol was involved in the response as well. a state park spokesperson didn't have details beyond that as for how uncommon it is for a state parks officer to be involved in a fatal shooting, you know, it's not the most common thing that happens, but it does happen. >> i couldn't tell you the last time, but it's not unheard of.

you know, we have been involved in officer shootings before. >> ama daetz abc seven news. >> we continue to update this story on air and online when you can get breaking news any time on your mobile device through the abc seven news app, just be sure to enable the push alert feature as well. new this morning, a san francisco district attorney's office staffer has been fired after sending an inappropriate email to d.a. brooke jenkins. the email to jenkins said in part, quote, what color panties do you have on? according to our media partners at the san francisco standard, it was sent by a victim advocate, yvonne thomas. screenshots of the email sent to jenkins and the rest of the office were leaked to x, formerly known as twitter. another email screenshot posted on x shows thomas apologizing, apologizing saying he sent the email in jest. a spokesperson for the da's office told the standard that there is no relationship between the district attorney and the individual who sent that email. we also have new developments on

the high rise where nearly 400 residents were displaced due to flooding last summer. it is now set to reopen again. the san francisco chronicle is reporting the 35 story tower at 33 tehama street is now safe for re occupancy. tenants were forced out in june when a water main break sent an estimated 20,000 gallons of water through the building. residents thought they would return in the fall, but a second flooding of the building caused further delays. san francisco mayor london breed says the moratorium on street vending in the mission district is making the area safer and cleaner. a report by the mayor's office says there's been a 30% decrease in assaults and robberies combined since the moratorium went into effect, the report also claims there's been a 23% decrease in requests for street cleaning. the mayor is also hailing a survey of business owners in which more than half say they feel the corridor is now safer and three and four want the moratorium to continue. the city implemented the temporary vending ban to

combat the sale of illegal goods in november. it expires next month. licensed vendors are against it, saying it hurt them financially. also in san francisco, a push to help small businesses. local lawmakers are proposing $2 million to go towards an apex relief fund, according to the sf chronicle. the new bill would support the small businesses that saw their sales drop during the summit in november. it would also put $250,000 towards parking and transit subsidies for chinatown. during the lunar new year parade in february. the bill goes to the budget and finance committee next before the board of supervisors may vote on it. now, this comes as san francisco's oldest toy store is closing for good next month. jeffries toys first opened in the city in 1938. its co-owner says there are a number of factors leading to the closure now, including fewer people visiting downtown. the store is located on kearny street in union square. a previous location on market

street closed in 2015 because of a rent hike. jeffries also served as one of the inspirations for the hit movie toy story, and while many parts of the bay area are still struggling to get back since the pandemic, one local city is defying the odds. we're talking about downtown san jose. the area has seen a lot more foot traffic and vibrancy lately. much of this can be attributed to the measures taken by the city to boost the downtown area. like turning san pedro square into a full time pedestrian mall and the recent opening of the downtown food hall. we have various agencies, we have the city that is very interested in revitalizing downtown. >> we have property owners that are super passionate and involved all of this is what it takes to move the needle. and i think this is a recipe for other areas to stimulate as well. >> the san jose downtown association says they hope to serve as a model for other bay area cities as well. we are just a day away from the big nfc

international court of justice stopped short of ordering a cease fire, but it's demanding israel try to contain the number of deaths. the court decided not to throw out the case and ordered six provisional measures to protect palestinians in gaza. but this decision is only an interim one. it could take years for the full case to be considered. israel denies the genocide accusation. well, today is the international holocaust remembrance day, a worldwide memorial day that marks 79 years since the concentration camp was liberated. holocaust survivors can still be found all over the world, including right here in the bay area. abc7 news reporter tim johns got the opportunity to sit down with one survivor to share his story. >> i think it's more important for non-jews than it is for

jews. i mean, we are so conscious of it every day. >> for bob horowitz, the holocaust is never too far from his mind. ahead of international holocaust remembrance day on saturday, he invited us into his south bay home to discuss his journey of survival. >> i've always had a great anxiety. >> born in modern day poland in 1937. horowitz says his early childhood was tumultuous throughout world war two. he and his family fled throughout europe, living underground for several years in the netherlands to evade capture by the. being smuggled through belgium, france and spain before managing to get on a ship to south america, ultimately, in 1944, horowitz's family was able to immigrate to the us, setting up a home in north carolina. he says the difficult memories from those years in europe and the constant threat of being captured still haunt him. >> we came so close so many times during our conversation.

>> he recounted one especially terrifying time while fleeing through the woods of france, where his family encountered soldiers, an incident horowitz says he was lucky to escape with. >> a french girl came along and started talking to the soldier and distracted them. whether she did it knowingly or not. i don't know, but she did. >> while horowitz and his parents counted themselves among the lucky ones who managed to escape persecution, he tells us not everyone in his family shared the same fortune. >> my mother's parents died in concentration camps and my mother's uncles and aunts died in concentration camps. my father lost two brothers and a sister and two nieces. >> horowitz went on to graduate from yale law school and have a successful career as an attorney . these days, though, he spends time talking about his experiences during the holocaust . in december, he was even invited to speak at an event hosted at the home of the governor of north carolina, a testament to how far jews have

come in the u.s. >> when i was a kid, you know, there were quotas for jews at the universities. you were told, don't go to work for, you know, the dow 30 industrial companies because there's a ceiling you won't advance. >> and on this international holocaust remembrance day, horowitz's message remains the same. that kindness, equality and compassion are timeless. >> you would think that after a few thousand years of continuous war in the world, people would come to the realization that war really isn't very helpful in the south bay. >> tim johns abc seven news. >> there is a new database of living holocaust survivors around the world. it was compiled by the conference on jewish material claims against germany and according to the claims conference, there are 245,000 holocaust survivors worldwide, about 1800 of them live right here in the san francisco bay area. well, time now is 516. we're going to take

a live look outside from our mount tam camera looking down at the bay. beautiful morning, but certainly dark out and warmer days are ahead with some nice temperatures. lisa argen is tracking this forecast. >> yeah, looks like they're going to last up into early next week. the warmer than average temperatures. and then we'll go back to the rain as february arrives. yeah something like that. about mid week on wednesday. so we are looking at more rain beneficial rain. although we could see it come down heavy at times and not expected any big time flooding. but you know, some of the creeks and streams could overflow their banks. we're talking wednesday thursday morning because the soils are just so saturated and we can get some of that runoff quite easily. here's a look at live doppler seven, where the activity is in northern california. but you can see the shower activity slow moving pretty close there to the bay area. so we could see a stray shower that could arrive in the north bay. maybe maybe you need the wipers from time to time, but overall it's a dry and

cloudy afternoon. you can see sea ranch here picking up a few showers. also into cloverdale, but otherwise down through santa rosa. petaluma could see a sprinkle. we are in the 50s right now with 54. in oakland, 55 in hayward, palo alto, 52. in some mid and upper 40s in the north bay. there's a look at the south bay where it will be a wild time tomorrow right? cloudy skies and a stray shower today. tomorrow will be the warmest day with records likely. we could see upper 70s in santa clara with sunny skies and the sunshine continues into monday. then the clouds will stack up on tuesday. by wednesday into early thursday, we're looking at that wet pattern setting up and perhaps lingering into the weekend. here's a look at today. you can see the rain line. well to the north here, so a lot of cloud cover, maybe a few peeks of sun from time to time, and also the possibility of a random shower there. this is midnight and as we get into your sunday, the clouds thin out. high pressure builds in. we've got an

on the oakland mayor. this says the east bay cracks down on crime. good morning. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather, looking forward to those warmer days ahead. >> i know it should be nice right? today uh- even on the mild side, starting out with the cloud cover. here's a look at the current numbers where we're in the mid 40s for the cooler numbers in the north bay, with 51. in concord, as well as san jose, 55 in hayward. so that is 3 to 4 degrees milder. hayward in oakland, colder in santa rosa with some fog. the next couple of hours we're cloudy in the mid 50s. you can see the rain line just north of cloverdale. we could see a stray shower anywhere throughout the day, but mostly clouds low to mid 60s. it is a mild one this afternoon, so the possibility of a shower exists. you can see that green right there. but we'll talk about warmer days and wetter days in the look ahead. coming up stephanie. >> all right lisa thank you. oakland's largest employer is warning its employees to be

vigilant in the face of rising crime. kaiser permanente says it's committed to ensuring the safety and security of its employees and physicians across all its locations. the san francisco chronicle is reporting kaiser employees are being told to stay in their buildings for lunch and not to hold meetings in downtown oakland. in addition , blue shield of california says it's paying for ride shares for employees to get to the office, along with on site parking in the east bay. organizers behind the campaign to recall oakland mayor shang tao took the next step, posting an official notice of intent right here on your screen about their petition. in a local newspaper. the inner city express. it includes pages and pages of signatures, 226 in total. the organizers wrote, quote, lives have been lost, property destroyed, businesses have been shut down, and fear in collective trauma are daily occurrences for oaklanders we, the concerned citizens, therefore demand your recall for the sake of our city's future. now, the mayor did not respond

to the notice of intent before it was posted, but we did speak with the mayor on midday live on thursday. >> you know, i wake up every single day and i have the best job in the world, in my opinion. i have the best job because i can create that deep impact in the community, you know, around public safety and safety. uh- affordable housing is so much more. and i just implore everyone in the city of oakland that during these hard times that we have to come together. it takes all of us. it takes a whole village in order for us to move forward. >> recall organizers plan to begin gathering signatures next month. they have to submit signatures from about 25,000 registered voters to get the recall on the ballot. now, speaking of crime, there's a new effort to revive an old partnership to help crack down on these ongoing trends in the east bay. abc seven news reporter anser hassan spoke to the mayor of berkeley. >> crime is an issue that doesn't stop at one city's borders or one county's borders. this is a regional challenge

that challenge runs along the i-80 corridor from richmond to berkeley, down through the rest of alameda county, says berkeley mayor jesse arreguin. organized retail theft, for example. what happens in emeryville or oakland impacts berkeley. it impacts richmond, uh- and while our law enforcement agencies work together, there's definitely an opportunity for more collaboration. mayor arreguin led a meeting on friday to resurrect the east bay public safety corridor, an initiative from the 1990s formed to combat crime. >> it roughly encompasses richmond down to fremont along the i-80 and 8-80 corridors. mayors supervisors and law enforcement agencies from both alameda and contra costa counties, along with the fbi and bart, were on hand for this opening round of discussions at hopes collaboration will lead to more data sharing and more uniform policies. >> different cities have no chase policies, and so say, you know, one one law enforcement agency is chasing somebody who's engaged in serial retail theft through one city. and then when

they go to another city, it doesn't have a no chase policy. it makes it hard to coordinate and to and to hold people accountable. >> crime doesn't see boundaries. >> alameda police chief san jose took part in the meeting. he says local law enforcement already works collaboratively. but, he adds, uniting with city and county government can improve those efforts. >> while law enforcement is one resource, we want to force multiply with all the resources that can have an impact on public safety, mayor aragon says. >> public safety isn't just about more policing, but also strengthening violence prevention and tackling mental health issues, he adds working as a region may prove more powerful in sacramento, so i think rather than us all launching our own things, working together, we we're going to be more effective and probably more competitive at being able to draw down state and federal resources, a more formal partnership will be announced in the coming weeks in the east bay anser hassan abc seven news in solano county, a local police department is facing a social media backlash because of a new netflix docu

series. >> american nightmare is about the denise huskins case. in 2015, she was kidnaped from her home and sexually assaulted before being set free. vallejo police claim the whole thing was a hoax. her attacker was later caught for a similar crime and pleaded guilty in the huskins case, the way police handled the investigation is now sparking outrage and criticism online. in fact, critics have yelped bomb the vallejo police department, causing them to actually shut down the page. a jury says former president donald trump must pay more than $83 million to a writer who sued him for defamation. former magazine columnist e jean carroll claims trump raped her in a department store more than 20 years ago, then defamed her. while he denied her claim. it's the second time over the past year that a jury has awarded carroll millions of dollars in damages from trump. he plans on appealing this decision. boeing 737 max nine planes are now back in the air weeks after being grounded by the federal aviation

administration, the chief operating officer of alaska airlines joined passengers on a flight from seattle to san diego earlier this month. a door plug blew off a max nine during the flight. the faa is allowing each plane back in service after rigorous inspections in alaska. plans to have all at 737 max, nine planes flying again the week after next united airlines expects to start flying some of its planes on sunday in san francisco city and federal leaders want to raise parts of the embarcadero to prevent flooding from climate change. the $13 billion project would change the face of the waterfront seen here on drone seven view. not only would it elevate the road and the ferry building seven feet, it would also raise the shoreline from aquatic park to heron's head park. >> our future depends on taking action now. this is why the draft plan is so critical to protecting the city's seawall from earthquake and flooding risks.

in red and gold here for the niners game. it's 538. new developments now on one of the greatest works of art depicting the city of san francisco is going into storage indefinitely. diego rivera's pan american unity mural has been on display at sfmoma. it's been on loan for two years from the city college of san francisco. the work is now coming down to make way for a new exhibit. its final home will be a new performing arts center, which has yet to be built. in the meantime, it will be stored on the city college campus in alameda. the city is a

70s as you get towards santa clara, san jose and then into monday. still very mild, upper 60s, a little bit more cloud cover. we'll call it partly cloudy and then by tuesday, temperatures dropping off to the upper 50s, low 60s, and then we'll see things really turn around. in fact, we'll be looking at some systems rotating once again. atmospheric river perhaps as we get into wednesday, thursday, friday. this is a look at a ten day precip map until next tuesday. as we get into that last day of january, and we can see anywhere from about an inch to maybe two inches in the santa cruz mountains. so certainly we can handle that with the rivers well below flood stage at some of the creeks and streams, and some nuisance flooding that we could get into by thursday morning. 65 in oakland and palo alto today, with a lot of cloud cover around mid 60s in livermore and as we look at the accuweather seven day forecast, maybe a sprinkle out there, a stray shower, then we've got record warmth for the

a shooting at a popular tahoe ski resort. this follows a violent car chase and crash. we have the latest at six. good morning. it's saturday, january 27th. i'm stephanie sierra. we'll get to that top story in just a moment. but first, we have warmer days ahead. some nice temperatures. >> we do. we've had a nice break from the rain and that has been pretty consistent. some pretty heavy rain. and then several days of dry weather. and we're into that dry spell right now. but you can see showers just north of our sweep around mount saint helena. so cloverdale a few showers there, but otherwise it's a cloudy start. a cloudy day today with 50 degrees in san jose, 53 in oakland there's some fog up in santa rosa, 48 there, 45 in sonoma, 24 hour temperature change. cooler in santa rosa, a little milder along the bay shore. look at the golden gate bridge, where today

we'll have mostly cloudy skies, a few peeks of sun mid and upper 60s. a stray shower is possible, but we're only talking about 1/100. nothing to cancel your plans. and then how about some outdoor plans tomorrow for 10 to 15 degrees above average under sunnier conditions? we'll detail that for you. coming up, stephanie. >> lisa. thank you. now back to our top story. that shooting happened yesterday morning at the olympic village in right near the ski resort. state parks officials say an officer fatally shot a person who was armed with a knife. that person was pronounced dead at the scene. abc seven news anchor ama daetz has the details. according to california state parks, a state parks police officer tried to stop a vehicle that was involved in a carjacking in tahoe city, about seven miles away. >> the chase ended in a crash here in the palisades tahoe parking lot. it's unclear why the chase led here. the state park spokesperson didn't have any information on that or who this driver was, state parks says. after the crash here, the driver got out of the car armed

with a knife. that's when the state parks police officer shot him. >> officers provided medical aid to the subject, but despite their efforts, again the subject succumbed to his injuries and the public again is avoid is advised to avoid this area as the investigation is ongoing. >> the shooting happened in a corner of palisades tahoe's parking lot, not immediately near the resort area, so skiing and snowboarding went on as usual this morning. the resort did not close down. we did ask why the state parks peace officer was involved in this pursuit. >> we obviously do focus on california state parks. that's a responsibility. but we're also our officers. at least they are a part. they're sworn officers here in the state of california. um, so, you know, mutual aid that applies to them as well. they're trained officers, just like chp has. they go to the academy. >> state parks does say the california highway patrol was involved in the response as well. a state park spokesperson didn't have details beyond that. as for how uncommon it is for a
