good game. i feel better than i did last week. i think this is a good matchup. yeah i'm excited. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. now officials are planning to close multiple freeway off ramps in san francisco tonight in an effort to control potential crowds after the game. >> take a look at this map. it shows the ramps that will be closed starting at seven until midnight tonight. officials say this is to enhance public safety due to an expected increase in traffic in tahoe. now an investigation is underway at heavenly ski resort after a snowboarder was trapped in one of its gondola carriages for 15 hours. monica lasso hopped on just before 5:00 thursday evening for the descent down, but then the gondola stopped mid-air, leaving her stuck alone on board. lasso did not have her cell phone and her yells did not attract the attention of the workers. below, lasso says she kept herself warm by rubbing her hands and feet together, and workers found her the next morning at opening time, when the gondola began running again, medics checked her out and thankfully they determined she

was okay. we're also learning new details on the shooting that happened at the palisades tahoe ski resort. we've learned the suspect, who died after he was shot by a california state parks officer, was an employee of the resort and worked there as a line cook. the suspect ran away after an alleged carjacking in tahoe city. the car crashed near the olympic valley inn, where police say the suspect jumped out of a car with a knife, which led to that shooting. also new this morning, the family of a man from south lake tahoe who died is now suing the county jail, claiming he never received his hiv medication. 39 year-old nicholas overfield was arrested in february of 2022. now he died a few months later at a hospital in june. the family says he wasn't given his medication to treat hiv for two months while detained at the el dorado county jail. well, they are back in the air. boeing 737 max nine planes have been cleared for takeoff since being grounded after a

panel blew out of a alaska airlines flight back on january 5th. abc seven news reporter anser hassan spoke to passengers who arrived at sfo on a max nine. >> many of the alaska airlines passengers arriving at sfo from austin knew enough about their flight to locate their bags, but not all the details. did you know this is the back side? no no, i'm so glad i didn't know. alaska flight 35 three is thought to be the first max nine plane to land at sfo since the faa grounded the boeing jets three weeks ago. >> i probably would have flown anyway, but i might have researched it more. >> u.s. regulators grounded all max nine flights immediately after a panel broke off in alaska airlines flight on january 5th, according to the associated press. alaska and united both resumed flying their max nines on friday. they're the only us airlines that currently operate the max nine. it's not a software problem.

overnight, north korea fired several missiles off a military port, adding to weapons tests amid worsening tensions with the us. south korea and japan. officials say it's the second launch in less than a week. south korea's joint chief of staff says they detected the missiles over north waters near a major military shipyard. that shipyard is said to be building missile firing submarines specific launch details like distance, number of missiles and the exact location have not been provided by south korea's military. these escalation are happening as tensions rise with iran. we're learning this morning that iran says they have launched three satellites into orbit, while iran has not yet intervened in the conflict between israel and gaza, developments like satellites present fears that iran may be improving its ballistic missiles . now, you've seen tents and homemade shacks, but a network of caves was recently discovered along the banks of the tuolumne river. officials say they're

dangerous for both the unhoused and nearby residents. reporter gabriel porras from our sister station in sacramento takes us inside police tape and barricades are going up today along the tuolumne river near crater avenue in modesto meant to keep people away from these large caves that police say are used by the homeless. >> they're building some interesting caves. >> bryan brandenburg walks his dog along the river every day. he always knew the homeless, sought shelter in the area, but didn't know to what extent until a volunteer and officers with the modesto police community health and assistance team cleaned up the area this weekend. >> honestly, i just started laughing and said how creative they were. >> the cleanup exposing eight caves dug into the riverbed as wide as ten feet. according to volunteers, these large enough to fit chairs, tables and even beds, with most of these caves located literally on the riverside. some neighbors have safety concerns, but others ask where else would the homeless go? >> i know it's dangerous, but they're also out in the elements . what's dangerous? freezing or

temperatures, sunnier skies, a few high clouds and will continue that into monday with record warmth possible and then by tuesday still pretty nice out there. but the clouds increase the temperatures drop, and wednesday the rainy pattern develops. so the asterisk here denotes the record. and you can see that the forecast cast is above the record for all of these cities here. from santa rosa to napa and into livermore. so san francisco in the upper 60s, the record is 72, but redwood city, the record is 71. so we're forecasting temperatures in the 70s all the way down the san mateo coast and sfo in the low 70s. here's a look at the sky cover. were mostly sunny today. a few more clouds on monday this is tuesday. you can see a few showers there perhaps, but we'll stop this late tuesday where the rain is going to move in on wednesday. gusty southerly winds . they'll get much lighter throughout the afternoon on wednesday, thursday, friday

abc news washington. >> back here at home in california, there could be some new regulations coming for speedy drivers. state senator scott wiener introduced sb 961, which would require new cars in the state to have technology that limits drivers from going over ten miles past the speed limit. the speed governors would tap into the same geolocation of real time mapping and traffic information to monitor the speed, wiener says. the bill stems from the alarming rise in road fatalities. if approved, it could go into effect by 2027. now this comes as california's roadways are ranked the third deadliest for pedestrians. that's according to data from the national highway traffic safety administration and the abc7 news. i-team is taking a deeper dive into the problem spots across the bay area. why are so many california pedestrians dying at night? that's a question facing state leaders as a disturbing trend is threatening our roadways. >> we're not talking about near

hits. we're talking about fatalities. >> we're talking about pedestrians and bikers who are being killed because they're in a public space. >> a quarter of california's fatalities are pedestrians. that's according to federal data through 2021. and that same data analyzed by the i-team shows that trend has worsened over the past decade. for example, in 2012, there were 653 fatalities that jumped to more than 100 in 2021, same story across the u.s. we are seeing nationally pedestrian deaths are the highest they've been since 1981. >> that's kind of crazy because our vehicles are safer. we've made a lot of improvements in technology, but yet we're killing more, more people just because they're going out for a walk. >> jonathan adkins is the ceo of the governor's highway safety association. he says all of these crashes are preventable, but we want to have our infrastructure such that it allows for mistakes to happen. >> a mistake shouldn't kill you. i'm building an infrastructure

where there's safe places cross. >> but this san mateo family had a safe place to cross. yet this young girl nearly got hit by a speeding suv who failed to stop. video captured in september of 2022. since then, a new law passed allowing six california cities to pilot speed cameras in san francisco, for example, there will be 33 installed this year to slow drivers down. data shows a vehicle going 42mph has a fivefold higher probability of killing a pedestrian at hits than if it were going 25mph in november of 2021, alameda county supervisor wilma chan was killed after being struck by a car while walking her dog. the city later identified that intersection as a high injury intersection. our goal is zero deaths and severe injuries, according to data analyzed by the abc7 news i-team, alameda county is ranked one of the worst in the bay area for pedestrian fatalities, with 28 lives lost, more than a third of

overall traffic deaths in 2021. the other top five counties reporting the most pedestrian fatalities that year are santa clara, with 35, contra costa with 20 and san francisco with 15. and that's the highest it's been since 2018. so what's being done about it? >> california has never prior revised pedestrian safety. >> state senator anthony portantino wanted to change that a year after chan's death, the governor signed his bill, sb 932, into law. it requires a county or city to identify high injury streets and intersections. in its general plan, and prioritize safety improvements to reduce collisions by 2025. >> we just need to, you know, hold cities more accountable to. >> case in point, the city of alameda launched the vision zero action plan, an effort to try and eliminate traffic deaths and severe injuries by 2035. >> just over two years. we have the safety improvements, have been installed at over 130 intersections throughout the city. >> some of the enhancements

pressure builds on in. but a closer look it's by the hot springs there up near sonoma. the highway 12. and you can see it continues to move to the east there, just north of napa. right now look at that beautiful sunrise. all the gold there for the niners from mount tam and the breeze. it is in the 60s on top of mount tam, 56 in the city, 57 in oakland was 61. and half moon bay, low 50s san jose and san mateo. we have easterly winds that are allowing for slightly warmer conditions, but it's also a cool breeze at the same time, which will lighten up throughout the day. pretty view from our sutro tower camera. it is 50 santa rosa 49 by the delta and livermore, and looking at 51 in concord last stop our exploratorium camera. so partly cloudy this morning. a sprinkle or two. not out of the question. up in the north bay. then we'll look for sunshine with some high clouds. today, warmer conditions near records for most of us, and looking at that record warmth bleeding over into monday. so

yeah, it looks like another warm day. and then into tuesday the clouds increase, temperatures drop off a bit, but the rain, some heavy rain heads our way on wednesday. so the asterisk denotes where will be if we these are the records for the date and then the forecast in this column here. so we're expected to break a lot of records here from napa santa rosa even into the east bay and livermore where this time of year when you get those easterly winds, it gets a little cool and a slower warm up. it's still very mild out there, at least ten degrees above average, possibly 15. and you see san jose could be about 75 today. so looking at a high cloud and sunshine mix today, then as we get into monday more sunshine still well into the 60s. here's tuesday with increasing clouds and stopping this by the afternoon. few breaks in the overcast there, so the rain holding off until midday on wednesday. here's an early look. what to expect wednesday and thursday as when we're looking

at the heaviest rain and that accumulated rainfall through early friday puts us over two inches for san francisco, the north bay, maybe two and a quarter. and you can see along the coast a lot of rain here into the mountains, the santa cruz mountains, and then the lower elevations, even over an inch of rain. look at the peninsula. could see over two inches. there or about two inches. so the cold air with it, but even colder behind it. looking at about nine inches at south lake, eight inches incline and very likely a winter storm warning as we get closer to the event. a highs on wednesday will be coming down to near average upper 50s to near 60. look what happens on thursday. even cooler , some mid 50s. the winds will switch around to the north and then looking at friday, the coolest day of the week with temperatures barely making it into the 50s, low 70s fremont, palo alto with upper 60s for you in san rafael and richmond. the accuweather seven day forecast near record warmth today and we could see some records into your
