francisco will likely be closed tonight in an effort to control crowds after the game. take a look at this map. it shows the specific off ramps that will be closed starting at 7:00 tonight until midnight. officials say this is to enhance public safety due to an expected increase in traffic to tahoe. now an investigation is underway at heavenly ski resort after a snowboarder was trapped in one of its gondola carriages for 15 hours. monica lasso hopped on just before 5:00 thursday evening for the descent down, but then the gondola stopped mid-air, leaving her stuck alone on board. lasso did not have her cell phone with her, and her yells did not attract the attention of the workers. below, lasso says she kept warm by rubbing her hands and feet together, and it wasn't until the next morning when workers found her. when the gondola began running again, medics did check her out and thankfully they determined she was okay. we're also learning new details on the shooting that happened at the palisades tahoe ski resort,

right in this area. we've learned the suspect shot and killed by a california state parks officer, was an employee of the resort, and worked there as a line cook. the suspect ran away after an alleged carjacking in tahoe. city. the car crashed near the olympic valley inn, where police say the suspect jumped out of the car with a knife, which led to that shooting. new this morning, a prosecutor who alameda county district attorney pamela price put on leave, has returned to work. john broussard is the last of seven prosecutors who were placed on administrative leave to come back and price sidelined the prosecutors, a few weeks after she took office last january. the da said placing them on leave was to undo the, quote, hot mess left by her predecessor, nancy o'malley. also, new this morning, rite aid will close 16 store locations in california, including one here in the bay area. the rite aid, located on murietta boulevard in livermore, is planning to shut down last october. the pharmacy

and retailer filed chapter 11 bankruptcy and announced it would close nearly 200 locations. the numerous closures are part of a restructure plan to help the retailer recover over the jetblue and spirit airlines merger may split after a federal judge blocked the plan. jetblue warned spirit it could terminate the $3.8 billion merger as early as today. now, officials don't believe spirit could meet the certain conditions required in time to close their deal. the federal judge ruled the merger could reduce competition and harm cost conscious customers, as jetblue says, there are still evaluating all options. taking a live look from sfo this morning, they are back in the air. we're talking about boeing 737 max, nine planes that have been cleared for takeoff since being grounded after a panel blew out of one of an alaska airlines flights on january 5th. abc seven news reporter anser hassan spoke to passengers who arrived at sfo on a max nine.

>> many of the alaska airlines passengers arriving at sfo from austin knew enough about their flight to locate their bags, but not all the details. >> did you know this is the back side? no no, i'm so glad i didn't know. alaska flight 353 is thought to be the first max nine plane to land at sfo since the faa grounded the boeing jets three weeks ago. >> i probably would have flown anyway, but i might have researched it more. >> u.s. regulators grounded all max nine flights immediately after a panel broke off in alaska airlines flight on january 5th, according to the associated press. alaska and united both resumed flying their max nines on friday. they're the only u.s. airlines that currently operate the max nine. >> it's not a software problem. it's not a design problem with the airplane. it involves making sure that four bolts were put into the door and properly tightened. it's not hard. >> the faa has been inspecting all max nine planes. it's also

a volunteers and officers with the modesto police's community health and assistance team cleaned up the area this weekend. >> honestly, i just started laughing and said how creative they were. >> the cleanup exposing eight caves dug into the riverbed as wide as ten feet, according to volunteers. large enough to fit chairs, tables and even beds. with most of these caves located literally on the riverside, some neighbors have safety concerns, but others ask where else would the homeless go? >> i know it's dangerous, but they're also out in the elements. what's dangerous? freezing or starving or living in a cave that i'm sure they know how they built and they know how sturdy it's going to be. >> the city of modesto did notrillionespond to a request for comment in a facebook post, modesto police said that officials offered resources to transition the homeless from the caves into shelter or housing. >> let them have their peace and they're out of everybody's way. >> but for some neighbors, like brian, the caves aren't a problem. >> i mean, it's getting them out of the weather. it's not hindering anybody. and i thought it was a good idea. they did it

saturated. we've had a great break. we'll continue to see dry weather through tuesday, but what's coming will be some heavy rain for several hours come wednesday. so here's a look at live doppler seven, where the ridge of high pressure is building in over the region. and that means a very warm day today. so looking at some very mild numbers now how about that 60 in oakland 63 and half moon bay with upper 50s from san francisco, san jose and san mateo was kind of mild yesterday despite all the cloud cover. and there is a partly to mostly cloudy view of the city. 54 santa rosa, 56 napa and fairfield with 59 in concord. so those cool drainage winds from the sacramento valley pushing into the livermore valley, keeping it kind of cool and breezy to start out. but by the afternoon, one of the warmest locations will be here in the south bay from morgan hill, gilroy, san martin, santa clara, low 70s at 330 and then dropping through the 60s for the big game and look at all the asterisks. that means the forecasted records in jeopardy right here.

so most of us will be in the 70s today. even more tomorrow. but i think some of the upper 60s at the coast, shy of a record for san francisco. so a couple day break from the gloom and cold of winter for beautiful day today. partly cloudy, mild to start out and then warmer. records possible today, tomorrow and then rainy with a big time pattern change. wednesday and thursday. here's a look at the sky cover. so notice that we clear on out. here is our monday which looks just as nice. and then into tuesday increasing clouds. the latest call on the rain should be awful close. awfully close to that wednesday morning commute. but it's still offshore, so we'll have to wait till we get closer to that and the totals through early friday into friday afternoon. paint the heaviest rain up in the north bay, 1 to 3in, maybe 4 or 5 around mount tam and the santa cruz mountains. right now at about two. but i wouldn't be surprised if they see over three inches the coastal hills. san francisco a good inch this is

? >> well, right now we're waiting for a decision from the courts sometime in june or july. until that time, though, the law is not in effect and we are just going about business as usual. we've been challenged here in california in scrambling to make sure that we uh- have our concealed weapons, carry permits squared away. uh- myself as the sheriff and the chief of police here in san francisco are both authorized to issue ccw concealed weapon permit to allow citizens to carry guns. and so there is an interest in where this law will land in terms of where people are going to be allowed to carry. >> yeah. all eyes towards that decision. now, last year, the supreme court struck down a new york law that required applicants to demonstrate good cause to get a license as you know, that's, of course, had an impact nationwide, with some saying the applicant floodgates are open. so do the numbers support that? >> well, here in san francisco

myself is sheriff and the sheriff's office. uh did not traditionally issue permits until recently. after that decision, you referenced, we've gone from having a total of four permits issued in the past 20 years to i've just issued over the last year, 68 permits, and we have about 179 applications that we're that are in process right now that we've received since that decision had taken place. and we're in process of approximately 100 more in process right now. >> so 100 of that, 179. yes >> that's correct. all right. >> so for people looking to get a concealed carry permit here in san francisco, what can they expect? >> well, we have our application online at uh- our website, and there is a department of justice application that you fill out statewide. everyone uses that form. uh we've partnered with both the police department and the california state sheriff's association to make sure that

our process is consistent, not just with the law, but trying to maintain consistency amongst the different jurisdictions and the different ways that police and sheriff's offices are authorized to issue these permits. >> and just to get specific about the rules regarding firearm training and what people should expect about psychological tests, can you walk us through that? >> absolutely. so part of the process in regards to the testing, uh, we do have a background process very similar to the type of background process we put candidates for deputy sheriff through. uh, we also have a psychological examination that people are required to go through before being authorized. and once they've gone through that process, there is a 16 hour training that they have to go through, including qualifications with the firearms of which they're going to carry. uh, our requirements are actually consistent with the recent changes in the law where they've gone from eight hours of state, state law requiring eight hours of training to 16 hours of

training. now >> and before we go, i wanted to ask about ghost guns statewide in 2022, there were more than 39,000 guns without serial numbers and over 800 cities and san francisco was ranked the third highest list for ghost guns used in crime. what are you seeing from your office, and what can be done to more effectively crack down on this? >> we have seen an uptick in the number of ghost guns, which are basically guns that don't have any, uh, serial numbers attached to any of the parts, uh, guns that are basically untraceable. uh, and we are challenged with trying to determine where they come from when that happens. uh, we have seen an uptick in that in terms of the guns that we've confiscated. i think san francisco as a whole had about 1100, uh, that were associated with crimes back in 2022, when our most recent numbers were, uh, compiled. >> and sheriff, before we go, since this law is currently blocked again, do you anticipate

those numbers to continue rising ? >> uh, in terms of our applications, we anticipate that they will continue to come in the process itself hasn't been halted by the injunction. uh, we still process people through their ccw permit process. uh, that has not been stopped. uh, we are anticipating the outcome of the decisions so that we can adjust all of our requirements and make sure that we inform our ccw holders exactly what the law is and what we are going to do moving forward. >> we'll certainly be following it closely. sheriff thank you so much for your time with us this morning. >> thank you. and go, niners today. >> go, niners. yeah, we're with you there. all right. turning to the race for the white house now donald trump nikki haley and president joe biden all returned in full swing on their campaign trail. trump dominated the recent iowa caucuses and primary vote in new hampshire. now, biden is looking at a smooth victory for the first democrat primary in south carolina. abc news reporter alison kosik has

bipartisan deal has come under pressure from republican presidential frontrunner donald trump, senator lindsey graham, a trump ally trying to appeal directly to the former president. i will say to president trump, if we can put this package together, the way i hope it falls into place, that you'll have more tools to secure america than you've ever had. trump has made immigration one of his top campaign issues, writing on social media that a potential compromise would be meaningless and just another gift to the radical left democrats. if republicans don't get everything they want as joe biden runs for reelection, the idea that that someone running for president would say, please hurt the country so i can blame my opponent and help my politics is a shocking development. this comes as the white house and senate are looking to get aid to ukraine and other countries across the finish line. >> they have to choose do they want to help or do they want to score political points? >> any bipartisan deal from the senate faces an uphill battle in

and also breezy around the bay. but that 54 in santa rosa coming up a good 2023 degrees today for record highs. low 70s here. 330 at santa clara. and looking at 630 as we go through the afternoon. so the first column here is the forecast highs today, which pretty much are all in the 70s except right by the coast and these are the records to be beat today. and it looks likely we'll do that more on the way tomorrow. so it looks like those low to mid 70s from the peninsula to the south bay very likely, as well as all the way up in santa rosa, partly cloudy out there right now. there's the bridge and we'll look for the warmer readings today. they linger into monday and we will look for that cooler day with the clouds on tuesday. rain looks like it wants to move in after the morning commute on wednesday, and several hours of some pretty good heavy rain at times. and as we get into the next couple of days notice, it's quiet and we can enjoy the break and the bit of spring time before we do a 180. here, look at this. four in the morning on

wednesday. so much of wednesday will be a challenge as the soils are saturated, so all of this rain is going to run right off that could lead to shallow landslides, some nuisance flooding. and notice how painted the north bay is from 2.5in, but doesn't show you the coastal hills. mount tam, where we could get three and four inches, as well as the santa cruz mountains, which are approaching three inches here, and the rest of the bay. easy one inch, perhaps two inches in some of these areas you can see how san mateo redwood city looks like. we could see two inches. it does look pretty progressive, like it's going to move on through, and then we get hit with some showers later on thursday and friday. look at the snowfall accumulation. now. behind it is the really really cold air. so at least we're getting about a half a foot here. and then as we look at the highs going from above average to below average midweek, upper 50s and then into your thursday, chilly and by friday, that's the coldest day of the week below average. so enjoy the warm up today, upper
