news in new york. >> this is america. this morning. >> happy monday everyone. i'm rhiannon ally and i'm lionel moise in for andrew. >> we begin with the deadly attack against u.s. troops in the middle east. >> the drone attack on a small base in jordan is being blamed on fighters supported by iran. it's a significant escalation amid growing concern about a broader regional conflict stemming from israel's war in gaza. >> abc's em nguyen has new details on the american casualties. m good morning, lionel. >> good morning. yeah, this marks the first time u.s. troops in the middle east have been killed by enemy fire since the israel-hamas war began in october, triggering an onslaught of attacks across the region. this morning, new details about the attack that killed three american troops in jordan. the white house says iranian backed militants launched an explosive laden drone into a base near the syrian border. in addition to the three americans killed at tower 22, base 34 were wounded.

eight had to be evacuated for a higher level of care. the pentagon says the injuries include shrapnel wounds and possible traumatic brain injuries. president biden addressed the attack at an event in south carolina, promising to act. >> we have a tough day last night in the middle east. we lost three brave souls and we shall respond. >> iranian backed militants have launched more than 160 attacks on u.s. forces in iraq and syria since october, when the war broke out between israel and hamas and rebels in yemen, backed by iran, continued to target military and commercial ships in the red sea using missiles and drones. despite tight u.s. countermeasures. just this weekend, this video showed a british warship successfully shooting down a drone, and this oil tanker was hit by a missile friday. critics are now demanding the white house do more to deter iranian aggression . senator lindsey graham saying,

i am calling on the biden administration to strike targets of significance inside iran not only as reprisal for the killing of our forces, but as deterrence against future aggression. abc's martha raddatz recently pressed the chairman of the joint chiefs on the biden administration's strategy in the region. >> it doesn't seem to be deterring the militants. >> well, part of our work here is to make sure as we as things have happened in the middle east , is not to have the conflict broaden. and so, as i provide advice and we think about the approach we take, we want to ensure that we take away capability while we protect our forces. >> about 350 u.s. army and air force personnel are deployed at that base in jordan that came under attack. but in this case, air defenses failed to intercept the drone attack. iran overnight denied any involvement. mint. lionel. all right. >> thank you for that update. talks for a potential cease fire in the israel-hamas war are

reportedly progressing. a deal in the works would pause the fighting for two months in exchange for hamas releasing more than 100 israeli hostages. us officials say significant gaps in negotiations for a deal could be hammered out in talks later this week, a bipartisan group of senators is on the verge of striking a deal with the biden administration to address the migrant crisis at the southern border. >> sources say the deal would give the president authority to close the border during a migrant surge and speed up the processing of asylum claims. the bill, which could be on the senate floor this week, is now a major issue in the presidential race, with former president trump urging republican us not to compromise. so there is zero chance i will support this horrible open borders betrayal of america. >> my message to republicans is do not leave dc until you finish the job. we have waited for so long for congress to do something about the border. first, joe biden should be securing the border. this is a

national security threat. >> house speaker mike johnson has warned the senate border bill, with the terms being reported so far, is, quote, dead on arrival in the house. meanwhile speaker johnson is vowing to hold an impeachment vote against homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas as soon as possible. republicans accused mayorkas of refusing to comply with immigration laws. critics call the impeachment effort a political stunt with little chance of getting results in the senate. >> a murder suspect has been captured after five days on the run in philadelphia, 17 year old shane pryor escaped from police wednesday while being taken to the hospital. he was caught yesterday after boarding a city bus, although he was not handcuffed when he escaped. he reportedly had a handcuff key on him when he was captured. it's unclear how he got that key now to the nail biting games that determined this year's super bowl matchup. >> they included a historic meltdown for the motor city, a lucky ladybug and a post game kiss seen around the world this

morning. heartbreak in detroit after the lions fell short of reaching their first super bowl in franchise history, losing to the 49 ers in an epic collapse. the detroit free press, with the headline super stunned kids, hints at the five touchdown. the lions shocked the 49 ers by racing to a 24 to 7 lead. no team has ever had that big of a lead at halftime in the nfc conference championship. and lost court. aiyuk touchdown. but the 49 ers would score 27 consecutive points led by quarterback brock purdy. connecting with brandon aiyuk on this deep pass that bounced off a lions defender. >> launching deep going for brandon aiyuk. it is oh he caught it off the ricochet. >> aiyuk credited a ladybug with giving him the luck he needed to make that catch before the game. >> a ladybug landed on my shoe and y'all know what that means. so so that's all i can say because other than that, i don't

thee stallion on good morning america. >> a snowboarder who got stuck in a gondola for 15 hours above a ski resort in nevada is now sharing her story. monica lasso says the gondola stopped working just moments after she got inside. it around 5 p.m. on thursday. crews found her the next morning when the gondola started moving again. lasso did not have her phone, she says she screamed for help until she lost her voice, and then spent the night rubbing her hands and feet together to fight off the cold. the resort is now investigating. >> i'm so happy she's okay. we turn now to a wild ride for a woman trying to stop someone from stealing her dogs. and on the other side of the country, a similar video of someone trying to stop a different kind of theft. here's abc's derrick dennis from the west coast to the east coast to wild scenes on the street of people trying to stop crimes in progress on long island, new york.

the exploration company deep sea vision, recently searched across 5200mi■!s of the pacific ocean floor using an unmanned submersible. in the final leg of the expedition, the team captured this sonar image of what looks like an object shaped like an airplane resting underwater within 100 miles of howland island, near where earhart was believed to have gone down after refueling in papua new guinea, romeo says he wasn't surprised to find the aircraft intact, saying, we always felt that earhart would have made every attempt to land the aircraft gently on the water . the sonar image suggests that may be the case. romeo is also raising hope that some of earhart's maps and charts could be found, saying, we plan to bring closure to a great american story. sonar experts are giving credibility to the image, saying it deserves closer inspection. the deep sea vision team now plans to return to the
