more. >> we're going to begin with president biden. he's decided how to retaliate for the deadly drone attack in jordan. it killed three american service member, wounded more than three dozen others. chief global affairs anchor martha raddatz is tracking the story. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. this morning here in jordan these counter strikes will begin any time. officials say this will not just be one big show of force. the strikes will come in waves. this morning the pentagon locking in plans for an imminent counter attack on iranian backed militants in the middle east. retaliation for that deadly drone strike on a remote u.s. base here in jordan that killed three american soldiers and wounded 40. a senior official telling abc news that the operation will last several days and hit multiple deliberate target, including facilities that enabled the initial attack, most inside syria even though the

commander in chief made it clear he blames iran. >> i do hold them responsible in the sense they're supplying the weapons to those who did it. >> reporter: another official said the president is unlikely to order any strikes inside iran over concern it could expand the conflict. but iranian assets outside its borders are still possible targets. one of the groups under suspicion with ties to iran hezbollah, now declaring that it has suspended attacks on u.s. forces. the pentagon saying actions speak louder than words. iranian backed fighters also blamed for attacking commercial ships in the red sea, which could mean higher shipping costs passed down to u.s. consumers. >> we have called on the iranian proxy groups to stop their attacks. they have not. and so we will respond in a time and manner of our choosing. >> reporter: president biden speaking to the families of the fallen troops.

abc's faith abubey siting down with the family of 23-year-old sergeant breonna moffett. her mother francine recounting the moment the military informed her of her daughter's death. >> he looked at me and he said, i'm sorry, ms. moffett, but breonna was killed this morning in a drone attack. and i'm like, my baby. my baby. you can't take my baby. >> reporter: indescribably hard for those families of the fallen. the bodies of the three soldiers will return to the u.s. on friday. president biden will be there to meet the families at dover as the tensions rise here in the middle east. michael? >> definitely hard for those family, martha. thank you. now to the growing hope for a cease fire deal in gaza.

negotiators say progress is being made on an agreement for an extended pause in the fighting and more hostages coming home. our foreign correspondent james longman is on the scene in israel. good morning, james. >> reporter: good morning, michael. a deal may be edging closer. talks are under way in cairo between hamas and their egyptian mediators. if a deal does happen, it could mean a six week pause in the fighting. a flurry of diplomatic activity across the middle east this morning as a deal may be close to release the more than 100 people still held hostage in gaza and stop the violence which has killed more than 26,000 palestinians. u.s. officials tell abc news a six week pause is being proposed with the first phase being elderly women, and children released first. >> we do believe it is a strong proposal that's on the table. >> reporter: on the ground in gaza, the idf announcing further evacuations for residents west of gaza city, sending more to already overcrowded refugee camps. satellite images from mid and end of january show between 50%

and 60% of buildings in the strip have been demolished. the idf confirmed they've begun flooding some of the tunnel network with sea water, a tactic the u.s. warned against saying it could damage the water and sewage systems in gaza. on going questions into israel's conduct during this war. new video from the palestinian authority shows that under cover raid of a hospital in the occupied rest bank. watch as israeli security forces disguised as they move through the hospital. one dressed in women's clothing. another as a daughter. the idf said three palestinians were killed, one a hamas member, the others from islamic jihad. they claim they were planning further terror attacks using the hospital as a hideout. at least one of the men was killed in his bed. one major dynamic at play. if this deal does happen, the right wing parties that keep benjamin netanyahu is power, they could pull out of the coalition. that could plunge israel into yet more political chaos. robin? >> that could be the case, james. thank you. now the storm about to hit the west coast.

heavy rain, snow and possible flooding. in the midwest, there is a record heat wave going on. >> oh, yeah. >> heat wave or just heat? >> i say spring-uary. feels like spring in january. that's a good descriptor. but it is warm. third day in a row for the bay area that had daily record highs. you can see the records like san jose at 73. menford oregon, their warmest january temperature on record. that takes it to the next level. this is the disrupter. this low pressure system, those tight isobars. it bombed out as they often do over the pacific. it's going to bring in not just the heavy rain and snow but big time winds. gusts up to 65 miles per hour. i-5, the grapevine, it will be tough to travel through this. tonight for the bay area is when that rain is heaviest. they're preparing for flooding in some of the foot hills especially north of los angeles. those south facing foot hills could end up with 2 to 5 inches. some of the highest elevations,

6,000, 7,000 feet could end up with more than a foot of snow. we're looking for that. i know you're wondering about that warmth. does the spring-uary make it here? not so much. maybe a little trip to the twin cities where more than a dozen golf courses have opened. >> wow. >> wow. >> that's unusual. >> sure is. >> thank you, ginger. latest on house republicans push to impeach homeland security mayorkas. over his handling of the southern border despite no evidence of high crimes or misdemeanors. democrats and leading legal scholars argue this does not meet the constitutional standard for impeachment. senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is on capitol hill. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning. even the lawyers that defended donald trump in his very first impeachment trial say the grounds in which republicans are trying to impeach mayorkas on are unconstitutional and they are moving forward with a rare move we haven't seen in 150 years. this morning house republicans moving one step closer to impeaching homeland security secretary mayorkas over his

handling of the border. >> we cannot allow this man to remain in office any longer. >> not a shrivel of evidence of high crimes or misdemeanors. >> reporter: after intense 15 hour hearing in the homeland security committee. >> if the congress does not impeach, what indeed is the remedy? >> i'd love to pick it up. legislation. >> reporter: republicans advancing two articles of impeachment against mayorkas accusing him of willfully and systemically refusing to enforce immigration laws and making false statements to congress that the border is secure. >> he comes in here and raises his hand and swears to tell the truth and then lies when he says the border is secure. >> reporter: but democrats argue there is no evidence of high crimes. >> the sham impeachment of secretary mayorkas is a baseless political stunt by extreme maga republicans. >> reporter: mayorkas calling it false, arguing more migrants have been deported or expelled under president biden than president trump. but migrant crossings have

doubled under the biden administration, hitting record levels. the president insisting there's only so much he can do without congress. >> i have done all i can do. give me the power. >> reporter: democrats and republicans in the senate have been working with mayorkas, closing in on a border security deal. but a growing number of house republicans saying they won't back it. >> it's a nonstarter. >> are you confident anything will get done to address the border before november? >> i'm confident nothing will get done. >> reporter: the new speaker of the house, mike johnson, saying if what he's heard is true that compromises going nowhere. is that a nonstarter for republicans in the house? >> we have a responsibility, a duty to insist the border catastrophe is ended. trying to whitewash that or do something for political purposes, is not gonna cut it. that's a nonstarter in the house. >> reporter: democrats calling it all hypocrisy. >> stop laughing. my family crossed that border so, yes, i take this personal. let's actually get to the actual work 'cause you and i know very darn well impeaching secretary

mayorkas is not going to solve the problem. >> reporter: the full details of that emerging border deal haven't been released yet. republicans initially demanded border security in exchange for additional aid to ukraine. but now a growing number of house republicans say they will not support that. but this morning all eyes are on the new speaker of the house, mike johnson, who said he wanted to hold a vote in the house to impeach mayorkas as quickly as possible. that could happen as early as next week. george? >> okay, rachel. thanks. also on capitol hill, corey bush is under federal investigation facing allegations that she misused campaign funds by hiring her husband for her security team. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the story. >> reporter: good morning. today house democrat cori bush of missouri is having her ethics questioned acknowledging she's facing a justice department investigation. bush's use of her husband as a paid member of a congressional security staff appears to be the issue. she claims he has security experience and she needs him due to on going threats to her life.

but a complaint to the ftc by a right wing pact accuses bush of illegally funneling $60,000 of campaign funds to her husband who it claims is not a licensed security professional. the office of congressional ethics however investigated the security allegations last year and dismissed them. the matter is clearly not resolved so it now appears doj and perhaps congress will have to resolve this issue one way or the other. george? >> pierre thomas. thanks. michael? now to u.p.s. the company said it plans to cut thousands of jobs in a bid to save $1 billion. morgan norwood is here with details. good morning, morgan. >> reporter: michael, good morning. u.p.s. planning to slash 12,000 jobs this year as the company looks to cut costs after what they described as a difficult and disappointing 2023. these mass layoffs impact about 2.5% of its work force. most will be management and contract positions. the ceo said most of the cuts would come by this summer and save the company about $1 billion.

these layoffs are part of efforts the company is making to change how it works. that includes using more artificial intelligence to help boost operations. how? they will be using ai and automation to help stream line shipping and other operations at warehouse facilities. all of this comes after u.p.s. narrowly avoided a strike over the summer when workers threatened to walk off the job. they were demanding higher pay. we also heard from driver an warehouse workers who thought it was unfair when office staffers were allowed to work from home during the pandemic and they weren't. now all staff must return to the office five days a week. the company zeroing in on productivity, with ai now at the forefront. robin? >> as it often is. all right, morgan, thank you. now the federal reserve, set to announce its first interest rate decision of the year, this afternoon. elizabeth schulze is here with what we might expect. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the big question looming over the federal reserve meeting is not if interest rates will go down, but when. the fed is expected to keep rates on hold at their current level.

but the central bank already pencilled in three rate cuts this year. that would make it cheaper to borrow money for a new car, home loan or to pay off your credit card debt. some investors are hopeful the rate cuts could happen as soon as march. the fed signaled it is not in any hurry. the economy is in solid shape. the unemployment rate is low. inflation is cooling. consumers are still out spending in spite of higher borrowing costs. >> our viewers want to know, how will this fed decision impact mortgage rates and the housing market? >> this is the question. it is good news that mortgage rates have already dipped in anticipation of the fed's move. just since that december meeting the average year 30 year mortgage is down from 7% to 6.7%. if you are taking out a $400,000 loan that's the difference of a monthly payment of $2,660 versus $2,580. going to save you about $1,000 every year. the big picture is those rates are still higher than the 3%

rate number a lot of homeowners locked in before the fed started hiking interest rates two years ago. many are saying it's unlikely we'll get back to that level any time soon. >> good news/bad news. elizabeth, thank you. going to turn to two huge upsets in college hoops. the madness has begun, as we count down to march. will reeve is here with highlights. >> good morning. it's a day until february but smelling like march. we've got some upsets in the air. two big ones last night. two top ten teams going down, starting with number 3 north carolina on the road at georgia tech. historically that's a tight rivalry, but this year unc has title hopes. georgia tech has lost more games than they won including eight of their last nine. but that did not matter to nathan george. 7.7 seconds left and he lays it in. left-handed. georgia tech takes the lead. then coming back down the court, one last chance for unc. misses the floater. georgia tech goes on to win.

to reach a new licensing agreement with universal music group. universal controls one-third of the world's music including songs by taylor swift, lady gaga and more. lot of songs. we've got more ahead including a possible break through in the treatment of pain and pain relief without opioids. that's coming up. right now tech ceo on capitol hill for a hearing about child exploitation online. they are facing pressure to protect kids on social media. selina wang is there. good morning, selina. >> reporter: good morning, george. we're outside of the hearing room where senators are grilling the top ceo's of top social media companies about child exploitation on their platforms. for many americans this is a deeply, painful and personal issue and senators are vowing to do something about it. this morning the ceo's of five major tech companies in the hot seat. senators will grill the leaders of tik tok, meta, snapchat over the crisis of child exploitation online. >> they have utterly failed despite their promises over the years to do anything meaningful.

>> when our children are online, they are the product. and addiction to social media is the business model. >> reporter: some families including the rodriguez have even lost their children to suicide. their sister and daughter selina died by suicide in 2021 when she was just 11 years old. >> she was very funny and silly. she was one of a kind. >> reporter: they say she became addicted to social media at age 9 manipulated by online predators to share sexually explicit videos of herself. >> it is built on a foundation that's meant to manipulate the younger mind. >> reporter: the family's lawyer saying selina's case is all too common. >> this is not an isolated incident. this is the norm. this is what children confront every day when they're on social media. it's entirely preventible. >> reporter: all five companies say they're taking steps.

meta announcing this month it would block suicide and eating disorder content from showing up on teens instagram feeds. while x is hiring employees to remove harmful content. law enforcement warns it's not enough. the fbi received over 13,000 reports of online sextortion of minors last year. that's when offenders threaten to release compromising material unless the victim pays them. 13 states passed their own child safety laws last year which include requiring users to verify their age. these lawmakers are grilling these tech ceo's extremely critical of them. the reality is that congress hasn't been able to pass any legislation to fix these issues. there have been many proposals. including one that gives parents and their kids more control over the content they see online, but big tech lobbying and disagreements among lawmakers have blocked those efforts. >> the problem is exacerbated by artificial intelligence. >> reporter: exactly. law enforcement has been bracing for a flood of images that are

shocked and panicked. this morning a nightmare for teachers in oklahoma. the department of education demanding they return up to $50,000 awarded to them by mistake. >> what a shame for us to run an agency that way. or what a shame for us to run a state that way. >> reporter: the nine teachers got the payment through a recruitment program for hard to fill teacher positions. christina stadleman said she received $50,000 but took home $29,000 after taxes. but she says the state now wants the full $50,000 back. some state lawmakers outraged. >> if the state wants to go get that money, they will use the heavy hand and full force of government to do that. it's our job as legislators not to champion that, but to step in and say, whoa, this doesn't make sense. >> reporter: brian walter, the official behind the teacher recruitment program suggested the bonuses were given after the teachers misrepresented their experience. but lawmakers from both parties insist this was the state's

doesn't even have a name. called zx548. it will be renamed if it gets fda approved. exactly. different profile than what is available to us right now for treating acute pain. this works differently than the opioid class of medications or nonsteroidal class of medications. this trial looked at it as a treatment for acute pain, in this case post operative pain. acute pain is that lasting less than three months. based on data, it showed an improvement in pain in about an average of two to four hours versus the placebo. no serious safety signal, which we know is incredibly important when you compare it to the opioid class of medication. >> when might it be available? and until it is available, what are your options if you suffer from acute pain? >> i think what's important, for patients under going surgery or have an injury there are options in terms of how we manage acute pain. it runs kind of a spectrum, from

through lane here. you have a long connection to clydesdales. it is something personal and emotional for you. why do you care so much about these animals? >> we're around these guys so much. working with them every day. to see them on the big screen is a sense of pride for us. >> i'd be proud, too, such beautiful creature. why exactly are clydesdales so special? they're iconic, for those of us who watch all the commercial, but you're with them. why are they so special? >> the clydesdales are a staple for anheuser-busch with their longstanding heritage. they're an american icon. when you think super bowl, you think commercials. when you think commercial, you think clydesdales. >> i see you holding that hay. i assume that's food for olaf. how much of that and whatever else does olaf go through in a given day? >> olaf will eat a couple pounds of grain a day, twice a day. he'll roughly eat about 40 pounds of hay a day and drink 30 gallons of water. >> whoa. they tell you to drink like eight cups for humans, okay, just for

context. few more stats. how big is olaf? how big are the feet? how fast can he run? >> olaf is a perfect representative for us. he stands 18 hands top of his shoulder or withers. he has a beautiful coat, black mane and tail, four feathers we call them. beautiful blaze down the center of his face. >> top speed when these guys are running along? >> fast. okay. that's not a number, more of a vibe. okay. olaf and his friends and siblings, who ever else are in the commercial, are you training them to act or are these horses doing what they should typically do anyway? >> it's what they would typically do anyway. most horses do solo shots in the commercial are specially trained for that specific commercial. so they'll go to our trainer in wyoming a month earlier. they'll start training for what they're going to do. if you see a pull hitch in a commercial, that's one of our three traveling teams that travel the country roughly 300 days out of the year. >> so there's a lot of thought

and time and effort put into this. we're the ones who reap the benefits. finally, how do you prepare them for a commercial or an appearance like this or wherever else they go? >> so on the road when we have to pull a hitch on the road, it takes roughly five hours of prep work before we get to the actual show. it takes us handlers four hours to polish the brash and clean the leather on the harness. the others are getting the horses that are going to the show ready. grooming them, washing them, washing all four white legs. that's really what goes into it. >> sounds like after getting olaf ready, you deserve a beer. you work at the right place. lane, zane, olaf, thank you very much. can't wait to see the ad in full at the big game. he's going to enjoy his hay. i'll throw it back to you inside, because we're frozen here. we were close. tell me why. >> what an amazingly talented cast. real star power. real star power. was there anyone whose fame and character the longest? >> i don't know if there was anybody -- television, you're working at quite a pace. i would say the person who had probably the biggest job really was tom hollander playing truman. there were so many aspects. i feel like he so embodied the essence of truman. i think his performance is a revelation. and he was such a joy. most of my scenes were with tom. when we finally had a scene that was less contentious we were like, oh, it's so nice. [ laughter ] we aren't being mean to each other. >> we're also part of the brat

pack. you all got back together for a documentary. tell us about that. >> i'll tell you. i got a call from andrew mccarthy. it's really interesting. the brat pack moniker that came about really didn't have anything to do with us as people, as professionals. there was just a clever headline. it's just interesting because andrew really wanted to explore the impact it had on each of us because for him it had a big impact. for rob it kind of just slid off his back. for me, i didn't love it, being thought of as a brat, because i felt like it kind of diminished us as professionals. but i didn't carry it. i haven't seen it yet. i really enjoyed my time with him sitting down reminiscing. >> such a thoughtful guy. >> i was sorry we didn't get a chance to all be together at one time. that would be really a treat, actually.
