10:02 pm
in the santa cruz mountains, you will notice from uh- summit area, boulder creek, heading into san to the south bay, cupertino, los altos, sunnyvale, san jose area. we are seeing some heavy rain at this hour and that is extending up along the peninsula across san mateo, san francisco. we are seeing some moderate to heavy rain right around mission street and going into the east bay. we are seeing some downpours as well. from san leandro across highway 185, the north bay, you have had your share so far. venado up in the stars.and loma, northern part of sonoma county, close to five inches of rain. saint helena area. you are getting downpours right now as we widen the picture here for this level three storm. even had thunderstorm arms off the northern california coast. this storm continues to just funnel moisture in. we have a number of flood advisories and warnings in effect that flood warning for parts of the north bay until early tomorrow morning. they've
10:03 pm
already seen creeks and streams overflow and there are flood warnings on the russian river at hopland and the navarro river at navarro. that's because they will rapidly rise. and going into tomorrow morning, tomorrow afternoon we'll be reaching that flood stage or exceeding flood stage, that level three storm with that atmospheric river. not completely done yet. we're going to see that drenching go on at 1030 tonight. 1130 tonight. and then you start to notice it easing a bit as we head into the overnight hours. the rain will turn more over to scattered showers. still a thunder chance. winds are 38 mile an hour uh- over the higher terrain, gusting right now. level three through tonight. downpours strong winds, flooding, wind damage, rough surf and that thunder chance remains in the forecast. so the biggest concerns urban flooding, shallow landslides, trees down and power outages all high river flooding heading into that moderate category, we do have that flood watch for the entire bay area. high wind warnings for the coast and hills, wind

10:05 pm
single day, but says bad weather makes their job even more difficult. one helpful thing, though, is the partnership they have with the county itself. ritter center staff tell us every time there's a severe weather alert, county officials notify them ahead of time so they're able to prepare, giving them some opportunities to pick up tents, mylar blanket kits, clothing, tarps, all of those things that if they aren't able to get into the shelter that they can use to help keep them safe. the ritter center is currently hosting a wet weather campaign to try and get donations from the public during this storm season, and if you at home would like to donate to that campaign, you can do so through february the 13th. in novato. tim johns, abc seven news okay, tim, thanks very much. >> in the east bay, people in danville hope that prep work will make a difference. public works crews were out earlier today trimming trees and securing power lines. they've been doing a lot of work since last winter, when danville's
10:06 pm
small streams overflowed, and that led to about three feet of flooding and overwhelmed drainage systems. so in addition to the prep work, they can do, contra costa county is encouraging homeowners to get involved as well. make sure that they're cleaning up leaves, clearing their drains and gutters, and checking their properties for any trouble spots . and another reminder that we hear a lot this time of year. do not drive through standing water . if you don't know how deep it is or what's in the water, and everyone is getting in on the rain tonight, for some people they are treating the wet weather as an opportunity to get out and get things done. we continue our coverage with abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez. she is live for us tonight in san jose. hey, lauren. hi ama and dan. >> you know, we're seeing some steady rain here. we haven't seen any major crashes due to weather, but we're going to continue to keep a close eye on the roadways. earlier tonight, we were in downtown los gatos, where we managed to find people out grabbing dinner or running errands. we spoke to one

10:19 pm
areas, and as we go hour by hour. 11 p.m. tonight. still gusty in spots, not nearly as strong as what we've seen earlier in the day. mid night, still gusty in some areas and then by the time we head into the wee hours of the morning, the winds will let up and that advisory and the warnings will expire. winter storm warning until 4 a.m. saturday. heavy snow expected 1 to 2ft three feet for the peaks. when you factor in the gusts, travel is going to be really difficult to impossible. the snow levels 6 to 7000 tonight, but dropping as we head towards friday to about 3500ft. even lower. tomorrow is going to be 4 to 5000 and friday 3500. that's below past levels. you're going to need to carry chains and be prepared because it's going to be a rough go over the weekend. 40s and 50s. on those temperatures, we will have scattered showers in the morning. same thing in the afternoon. can'trillionule out an isolated thunderstorm or two 50s and 60s on your high temperatures. here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. we're going to keep it at a two tomorrow. biggest

seven news reporter lyanne melendez went with volunteers to count the unhoused in san francisco's tenderloin. we're going to go to larkin, and eddie started larkin and eddie on this clear, mild night. >> groups of volunteers are ready to comb through the streets of san francisco to find and count the number of people who are unhoused. >> what do alejo's some of them be at the pier, some of us will be under bridges. >> i say we go. what do you think? go like this. and then down and then up. sounds like plan. plan. all right, let's do it. >> each group is assigned to a specific area. the question are you homeless is never asked. that's not how the point in time count is conducted. and instead they do a side inspection at times offering resources like in the case of this woman. then they jot down whether they think the person is confirmed, suspected, or if no one on the block is unhoused. how do you know she's homeless? >> uh- well, that's a good question. i'm assuming it's
10:50 pm
because he's out here and she's sleeping, but it helps that many of the volunteer hours and people working for the nonprofit code tenderloin know many of the unhoused in the tenderloin neighborhood, or were once homeless themselves and know who's who. >> two weeks ago, i was homeless , sleeping on the concrete just like she was. so a lot of them. i do know del seymour is out counting tonight himself. >> once homeless for 18 years. how should people approach the unhoused tonight? >> no different than you would approach someone if you're walking up the front stairs of their home. so this is their home? yeah. there's no such thing as encampments. those are for yosemite. these are dwellings in san francisco. >> the count runs from eight in the evening to midnight. right. because that's when people are believed to be settled in for the night and less likely to be moving around. people in cars and in city shelters are also counted. the purpose of this nationwide count is to determine
10:51 pm
if the number of homeless people is going up or down. the results will impact services and federal dollars, but no one is expecting the numbers to be entirely accurate. for example, as they go by a closed tent, they'll never really know how many people are inside, so they are counted as one individual. well, it's impossible to get an accurate count. >> yeah, in no way can you know this is the closest that we can get to you know, a perfect count . >> as a result, some groups are undercounted. margot caswell is with the ucsf benioff homelessness and housing initiative. >> homeless families do everything that they can to stay out of the public eye because they're really worried with good reason that their children will be taken from them. young people are also undercounted because many are couch surfing or staying with friends. >> we know the number from last point in time count was a little over a thousand youth experiencing homelessness, and
10:52 pm
we know that number is much higher. >> that's why volunteers in the haight-ashbury neighborhood conducted their count in the mid morning hours, when young people are more likely to be hanging out on the streets. >> we'll split up, have one team go this way and the other team on this side. we'll meet up at the end and get a count back in the tenderloin. >> on this evening we counted between six and 21 unhoused people on each block, including forrest bein, who had just claimed a spot on the sidewalk to set up his new tent. >> i had to do with the addiction, you know, and the choices i make and how i live. but i've learned a lot through being homeless and my journey is just as important as anybody else's. i believe so. >> so in the spring they will have the first set of numbers, but it won't be until the summer when they have the final report. that's when san francisco will find out how many people are homeless. lyanne melendez, abc seven news.
