felt a little like, what's the world coming to? but it's the talk of the town tonight in the north bay. >> some wild weather spotted in the hills of petaluma, and we are getting to the bottom of what they saw. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. it looks like something you might see in texas or oklahoma, but today made for the perfect storm. >> yes. abc seven news reporter tim john spoke to the man who pulled out his phone and started recording. it's the video everyone is talking about. >> i was shocked, totally surprised. >> yeah. >> just after 11:00 thursday, a funnel cloud reported near the town of two rock in sonoma

county, about 15 minutes west of petaluma. the weather phenomenon spotted and filmed by matthew beach, who works nearby. >> i lived in texas for about 20 years, so i'd seen plenty before, so i just grabbed my phone and started recording. >> back in petaluma, many locals told us the video had been going viral in town. tara burke says she first saw it on facebook after it was shared by a friend who lives in tennessee. >> originally i was like, oh wow, where is that? must be happening somewhere near her, patricia flynn tells us she was working at a nearby hospital when a coworker's daughter saw the video and wanted to check on her mother to make sure she was safe. >> dillon says after seeing it, she couldn't believe this had just happened. a few miles down the road. >> it did look fake and it looked very, very convincing. it was like the wizard of oz. everyone we spoke with thursday night said they had never seen or even heard of this type of weather event happening here in california. >> and while some said they found it terrifying, i would probably run away just because being from here, i have no clue

what that entails. >> i'm not used to that type of weather. >> others say they think it's pretty cool. >> oh, i go towards it, you know , with a sort of trying to keep a safe distance. yeah, absolutely. yeah. just fascinating to watch. oh yeah. how could you not in sonoma county? >> tim johns, abc seven news. well of course we have to get the full picture. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the expert breakdown and also tracking all the storms. what are we seeing? sandhya yeah. >> let's take a look first at this video. again, because we are so fascinated by the idea of this funnel cloud that was reported in petaluma. so this afternoon, the national weather service reported that it was an unconfirmed report of a tornado that developed northwest of petaluma. we're still investigating now, tonight, as you take a look at my graphics here, let's talk about what i just received from the weather service. this is from dalton at the national weather service. a report of a funnel cloud in sonoma county today. according to the national weather service, our partners in sonoma county

were unable to locate any damage, nor have we received any reports of damage. so unfortunately, nothing to update. now, keep in mind a tornado touches the ground. the base touches the ground. a funnel cloud does not typically with tornadoes, if there is a touchdown down, they go in and they investigate and then they declare whether it was an enhance fujita scale zero, which is a very weak tornado or a but here's a look back at the storms that moved through just around sonoma county at the time of that reported incident, certainly was a lot of storm damage in the last 36 hours, 57 reports from rain flooding to wind damage. right now, we are still tracking showers on live doppler seven. so as we get you into street level radar in the santa santa cruz mountains, excuse me. we are seeing some scattered lit showers right now. not nearly as intense, but it is heavier in oakland. foothill boulevard, 580 san leandro and we have a flood

warning still in the north bay until 3 a.m. sonoma county still seeing some flooding, a minor flooding on the roadways and streams. it is a level one on our storm impact scale. as we go hour by hour, expect the rainfall to pick up in coverage tomorrow as the commute begins, we're going to see scattered downpours across the region. still, the possibility of thunderstorms and if you do see thunderstorms like today, there may be hail. it is a one tonight and tomorrow. scattered downpours, chance of thunder, rough and dangerous surf and speaking of surf, the weather service is keeping that advisory up until 3 a.m. those breakers, now 14 to 18ft, is what they're expecting, so they have definitely lowered them. i do have another storm in store for the weekend with a potential atmospheric river. i'll be back with the timeline coming right up ama. >> all right, we'll check back. thank you. sandhya. and you can track the rain anytime with the same live doppler seven radar that sandhya and the rest of our weather team use. all you have to do is search abc seven bay area in your device's app store so you can download it. >> all right, time now to get

into this evening's abc seven news adventure at 11. it's our way to get you on top of some of the headlines. you'll hear more about in the days to come. and tonight we're talking tech. tomorrow so apple will release what it believes is a glimpse into the future. >> the apple vision pro is being hyped up as the headset that will push us into a post-smartphone era. and the price? well, that's the attention grabber. >> it sure is. tim cook shared this today from the fifth avenue store in new york city, signaling the $3,500 vision pro hitting stores tomorrow. >> abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez has more on what this product might hold for apple. the metaverse and bay area tech. >> for the first time in apple's history, the tech giant is releasing a mixed reality headset. the apple vision pro is a wearable device that leaps the user into a virtual environment. >> i think this is going to open up a lot for the masses. >> dan barbera is the content creator of mac rumors, one of the largest apple centric websites, barbera was one of the

first to try the headset on in june of last year. >> you can go on the moon if you want to and immerse yourself or bring yourself back to reality and kind of use those apps within your reality, within your space. >> apple is calling it a spatial computer. think of it like a projected screen and rather than controlling through a keyboard or a mouse, you use your eyes or gestures. the price is $3,500 for a business expense. >> i could totally see myself doing it. yeah, it's a bit much. >> santa clara resident robert davis says he already uses the virtual reality headset. meta quest three. >> my first experience with it was overwhelming. i was just kind of blown away. i just didn't realize how just how immersive it would be. >> the company meta plans to create the metaverse, a virtual world now that apple is launching the vision pro, it can help draw more consumers into the virtual reality market for a much lower price. >> i believe mark zuckerberg already came out and said that he wouldn't mind totally being

the android of vr headsets to apple's, you know, being apple and so, i mean, yeah, i mean, he of course he's rooting for this to take off because they're going to be at this high price point. and so meta can undercut and keep doing what they're doing. there's so many things that you can do with it. but we're still in the early stages. so let's temper the expectations a little bit and just be excited that this is a new product that a major corporation is investing in. the headset will be available in stores and online friday, february 2nd in palo alto. >> lauren martinez abc seven news wild. >> all right in the east bay some new findings out tonight in the toxic release of metals from the martinez refining company, the refineries oversight committee gave an update this morning on this. an independent investigation is trying to find the root cause of the refineries release in november of 2022. the release covered cars and streets in ash. we showed you these pictures at the time, investigators cited inadequate safeguards and found that an employee at the refinery that day was working more than 20

hours a day. >> we find that blaming the worker is not the appropriate action. instead um, our recommendation focus is on the way that refinery leadership should manage their fatigue management program and the program itself, and needed to be upgraded. >> next steps include the release of a risk assessment report on february 22nd, and a 45 day public comment period. tesla is settling a lawsuit with 25 california counties that accused the company of illegally dumping hazardous waste. a judge today ordered tesla to pay $1.5 million. the dumping allegedly happened and its service centers at its service centers, energy centers and its fremont factory. eight bay area counties are involved in this settlement. the investigation started in 2018 when investigators with the san francisco county district attorney's office conducted undercover inspect cars. >> it's one of the most complex challenges facing the city of

san francisco. tackling the local drug crisis. but tonight in our mission to build a better bay area, we are finding one potential breakthrough to help. abc seven news reporter tara campbell found out more about this idea of drug tourism and how it could be a key tool for the city, on the heels of the deadliest year yet amid the drug overdose crisis, a san francisco supervisor is calling for more data on where people who are using and dying from illicit street drugs are coming from. >> so we know anecdotally that there are people who come here from out of town and often over the years i have seen it play out where there's debates about whether or to what extent san francisco is a destination city for drug tourism. >> supervisor matt dorsey sending this letter to the city's comptroller's office requesting it compile home address histories of people arrested for drug use and those who have died of an overdose. >> so i wanted to work with the comptroller to identify a methodology. these numbers are

not unknowable, and once a methodology is established, the supervisor would like to see an annual report, which would also include data on where people are from, who are receiving general assistance benefits from the city. we owe to our taxpayers was to make sure that that the services we provide as part of a social safety net that's worthy of being the city of saint francis. this is something that is for residents of the city of saint francis. we can't be the social safety net for the western united states, the idea being that an annual report will help policy makers make more informed decisions addressing the drug overdose crisis, and we have to have a clear eyed view of what we're incentivizing and what we may need to change in terms of public policy. but before we do that, we should have a complete report. >> but not everyone agrees with the supervisor s approach. >> focusing on energy, on pointing a finger as opposed to like fixing a problem. it's just not effective. >> lydia bransten is the executive director of the gubbio

that's a suburb of tampa. officials say the pilotrillioneported the engine had failed shortly before the crash. it's not clear how many people were on board. several homes went up in flames. at least one was severely damaged. witnesses describe seeing something plummeting from the sky, and then a loud explosion. >> a coalition of groups is condemning recent acts of anti-indian government vandalism in the east bay. members of the sikh community held a news conference today denouncing this vandalism. they say it contained pro sikh separatist language. the separatist movement is seeking to create a homeland for six in northern india. the first attack happened at a hindu temple in newark in december. the second two weeks later at a hindu temple in hayward on behalf of the sikh community in the tri city area. >> i want to really extend my words of appreciation for coming out in unity against the acts of vandalism. >> members of south asian

community groups, as well as local mayors and police attended the event and echoed the call for peace and unity. >> as we kick off black history month, the california academy of sciences tailored a first time event to celebrate black culture. the museum opened for those 21 and up with a whole host of things to do live music, a dance panel with women of the black panther party and visual art to reshape the word black, not to mention a marketplace with 20 plus black owned businesses in new york city, the cast of the national geographic show genius, mlk x was at the paley center for a special screening of the show, which premiered tonight on nat geo and right here on channel seven. the paley center has an exhibit which includes costumes, props, and decorations used in the series. genius is a story about how doctor martin luther king junior and malcolm x changed america forever. >> there's a huge shoes to fill. i could never fill them because i'm not coretta. i can only do

arma that i stir things up around here? >> yes. all right. now, you don't want to hear me sing, and you don't want to hear me see me dance. all right, so we won't do that. but i will tell you this much. i think punxsutawney phil will see his shadow tomorrow. i'm predicting six more weeks of winter. at least we know over the next week we're going to see winter. let me show you live doppler seven. here's a look at your weekend storm. so once again, we do have the moisture trail stretching all the way back towards the hawaiian islands. so this atmospheric river will slam california. but it is going to go more south into southern california sunday into monday. and santa cruz mountains would be at the border of the two, where we think that there's going to be some heavier focus right now we do have some rain falling in the bay area. let's get you into street level radar, where we're seeing some pockets of moderate rain right around petaluma, highway 101, street level radar into the east bay, san leandro, fairmont

drive, foothill boulevard, alameda. you are getting some downpours and on the peninsula across 280 into san carl. also in the santa cruz mountains, capitola, aptos. rain rates about an inch per hour. so you know, with rain like this, you're going to likely see some ponding on the roadways. we have seen thunderstorm today, not just locally but around the state as well. and that atmospheric river that soaked us yesterday night moved into southern california. and it did bring some damage down there as well. so as we look at the picture here, in terms of the rain fall, these are running rain totals. moments ago, i just updated. you will notice that the biggest winner was ben lomond, close to five inches of rain uh- almost four inches in kentfield, almost three inches in santa rosa, two and three quarters san francisco. so oakland over an inch in napa, closing in on two inches concord over an inch san jose 1.3in. and it was really great to see this, which is the snow really coming down. this is from the sierra, and right now even though most

areas are not seeing that kind of snow, it is snowing at the highest elevations. chain controls on 88 and for winter storm warning until 4 a.m. saturday 12 to 18in two feet over the peaks. with those snow levels dropping to 3500ft tomorrow morning. be careful if you do have travel plans now. taking you through multiple systems. this is by sunday afternoon. we're talking 45in of snow at kirkwood, 41in donner. so they need it. they're only about half of where they should be. as you know, 4050 on those temperatures right now. a live view from exploratorium camera tonight. showers. thunder threat tomorrow. we'll still keep it unsettled and this weekend, our next storm arrives. but don't worry, it's not going to be a complete washout for your weekend. it's a level one tonight and tomorrow. scattered downpours, chance of thunder, rough and dangerous surf continues as we go. hour by hour. your morning commute will include some pockets of moderate showers. watch out. give yourself that extra time. you will need it as the roads will be wet at 9 a.m. you're still

looking at those showers continuing off and on in the afternoon, and even a rain snow mix in the hills above lake and mendocino counties as that colder air is filtering in. and that continues through tomorrow night. additional rainfall totals. most of you will be under about 20/900 to a third of an inch. but if you get caught under one of those thunderstorms, you could see some heavier rain and some hail. so be aware of that. a colder morning. you need the jackets tomorrow. 30s, 40s and the umbrellas tomorrow afternoon. a peeks of sun and some clouds and showers. 40s, 50s on the highs a look at what you can expect this weekend. we certainly have another storm coming, but saturday a few showers out ahead of it. sunday is the main event. you will notice southern california is getting the brunt of this. really, this pattern continues with another storm due in here on thursday, so rainfall projections as this model is going way higher, which is in that two three inch category, even four inches for the bay area. but this is the european model and it's not going quite as intense for the bay area. so stay tuned. accuweather. seven
