is helping local artists. ♪♪ a lot of traveling, a lot of maps. these are all the places you went to - to get these photos? - yes. so i covered all national parks in oregon, california, nevada, and utah. i visited all of them. the project's called "extraordinary decisions." it's all shot the same way. they're self-portraits, and the project's about a personal journey, moving from louisiana to california. ♪♪ she handed me a card-- this card, actually-- and she said, "yeah, you know, "i'm a photographer, and anything i could do, i just want it to be on this billboard and be awesome." i said, "well, i like this right here. "is she going west? is she going east? "is she leaving east to come west? how about we put that up on the billboard?" ♪♪ i wanted to shoot a shot that empowered women,

people just in general, to go for it. so she's about to conquer wherever she's going, right? and then i love the color scheme of the italian, so that's why we chose this one, because it's north beach. - and tony liked this one? - he loved it. ♪♪ and she said "hey, you know, "could we do something on your billboard? i heard you have this one." i said, "i love this picture. "how about we put that up on the billboard "and it won't cost you anything, "and i don't want a logo. i just want it to be about the art or the photograph." ♪♪ tony: starting january, fresh new year. san francisco's getting such a bad rap, and everything's bad, bad, wrong, wrong. it's not all bad. so let's give some artists some love, photographers some love, and let's make it about san francisco or north beach.

a love letter. a testament. i cover all the costs. clear channel, of course, owns the billboards. i lease them for a year. she's the first, and it's pretty cool. a lot of business guys came to me and said, "you're going to give away the billboards to some artists? what are you, nuts?" i said, "the more people that come to north beach, the better it is for everybody or san francisco. a nice drive out. i was so excited. i was really pumped, because when i was in school, i was like, "man, to be on a billboard." and then a couple years later, it happened. "on the road to north beach." karina: and what do you want people to take away from that? markelle:: come to north beach and experience it, and whatever journey you're on, wherever you're going, just stop in because we're a family here in the neighborhood, and we want to support artists especially. tony: i love north beach. i was coming here since i was 18 years old. it's a very strong neighborhood. it's very deep-rooted. artists don't get a chance to showcase their work--or photographers-- like this. i want something that you look at it

a strawberry mississippi mud pie. everyone loves pie and ice cream. woman: i mean, their ice cream is cans found the best. and i always have. to get more than one scoop. ♪♪ christian: i came from the baking and pastry world, and ozzy really came from wanting to be an entrepreneur. so we kind of connected on planning. actually, our business was the first start of our relationship, early on. ozzy: we started selling these ice cream sandwiches. they just really caught on like fire. we'd have people showing up at our store waiting for us to fill up our cabinet, and so we were like, wow, we could really maybe expand on this. and we feel like healsburg really deserves to have its own premier artisan handmade ice cream shop. when we first opened these doors, we had like 50, 60 people waiting for us to open. christian: we focus on seasonality, local produce, on high quality ingredients. we don't chock our products full of preservatives.

everything's very simple. five ingredients: eggs, butter, sugar, flour. it's all very simple. i'm a mom of two little ones, and for me, it's very important to know that i'm giving them something that doesn't have preservatives. woman: you can tell it's like grandma made it. christian: so start to finish, it's completely all made in house. i like that it's made from scratch. christian: i started kind of pairing our menu to be a seasonal pie menu, and then our ice cream is also seasonal, so we're able to come up with a lot more than the traditional vanilla bean á la modes. just some really inventive flavors is what we kind of specialize in. my favorite ice cream is triple berry pie. strawberry sorbet, and homemade oreo. raspberry blood orange, pistachio cherry, that one's my favorite. passion fruit. the hojicha maple mochi is my favorite. this is my go-to place because i just love the people here. my favorite part about noble folk is the people,

to meet with the community, to talk to some of the children and be involved with the 49ers. i grew up watching the niners, and so really, it's just so exciting to be back home. ♪♪ hi, i'm astronaut nicole mann and a colonel in the united states marine corps. i grew up here in northern california, and we're attending the 49ers game today. our frontline hero of the game, colonel nicole mann! [cheers and applause] so i was born in petaluma, california, just north of the city, and went to school at rancho cotate high school in rohnert park. after there, i went to annapolis, the united states naval academy in maryland. i knew i wanted to serve in the military, and i was interested in engineering, and so that was a great school for both of those. after that, i went to grad school back here in california at stanford university, and then off to flight school in the marine corps. i got my wings and learned to fly the f/a-18, which is a hornet, and did two combat deployments off the aircraft carrier uss enterprise

in iraq and afghanistan. man: what's more exciting, your first landing on a carrier, or blastoff on spacex? oh, let's see. first landing on a carrier or launching on spacex from the planet. both were so exciting. both were beginnings of new chapters in my life. i was a commander of crew-5, and that's a spacex spacecraft. it's incredible to be in space. mom, look, i'm finally in space! [laughter] we launched from kennedy space center in florida to the international space station, where my crew and i spent 157 days in orbit around our planet, where we conducted over 250 science experiments, seven space walks outside the door, a ton of outreach events and upgrades to the space station. it was an incredible experience and an incredible view of our planet from outer space. newscaster: and as you just saw, splashdown of crew-5. so i was fortunate enough to be the first

indigenous woman in space. i am part of the wailaki tribe, which is part of the round valley indian tribes in northern california, up in covalo. that's very important, i think, that we look back at our heritage and our past and think about where we came from, thank all of the elders and the people that paved the way to make these opportunities for us, and then reach back to those communities. because although we are breaking down barriers every day, there are still barriers that children face, and we need to help them overcome those challenges. go after that dream, set that goal, and then have the discipline to go after that goal. all that hard work is going to be worth it. it really pays off. announcer: coming up, an iconic napa valley winery reopens its doors. when our guests leave us, whether it's a once a year trip, once a week trip, or once in a lifetime trip, they remember it for a very long time. ♪♪

in a valley where grand openings happen with somewhat regularity. but to reopen a place that already has 60 years of history is truly special. ♪♪ you have to have that warm hospitality dna in you and it helps bring the wines to life, makes that view that much more memorable. and it's one of the reasons our guests keep coming back again and again. ♪♪ the glass fire rolled through in september of 2020. it's been just over three years since that happened. but as we came out of that, this opportunity to pause and reflect in a way that we had never had the opportunity to do. we've been fortunate to be one of the busier wineries and more frequented wineries in the napa valley, but never presented us with three years to fully refine and rethink every piece of the guest experience. this place just feels special. this place feels different. there's something about it when you get to the top of the hill.

the uniqueness of this property is palpable. that, i think, inspires people and creates memories. we feel that we've picked right back up where we left off three years ago and only even elevated upon that. sterling sustainability has always been something that's important to us, but especially now, as we look to reopen following the tragedy of the 2020 fires. we'll have 26 parking spaces dedicated for ev charging. we're also in the process of converting the entire winery to 100% solar powered. that includes the winery, the hospitality spaces, and of course, the iconic gondolas will be 100% solar powered. sterling is the only winery in the world that has its own gondolas to get our guests to the top. they've been part of the sterling experience since 1973, when we first opened our doors. most gondolas, you go to sea resort, you go up, you go down in the same way. ours is a triangle, so you get two very different views-- one on the way up, then a separate, beautiful view on the way down.
