have already been issued for parts of santa barbara county. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm karina nova. fortunately, conditions won't be as bad here in the bay area, but it's still expected to be a level three on the abc seven exclusive storm impact scale. let's take a live look outside at the conditions right now. there are some scattered showers in parts of the bay area, but for the details on what we can expect, let's get to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. >> sandhya. yeah. karina and ama, we are expecting stormy conditions as early as tomorrow night and continuing into sunday , especially during the morning hours as that strong level three storm comes in with an atmospheric river. this is your time to prepare. as you look at live doppler seven, we're not all seeing showers there. very spotty right now on the peninsula from redwood city to atherton. also street level radar. linda mar boulevard along the san mateo coast is seeing those showers in the east bay. orinda, lafayette, mount diablo boulevard. watch out for some wetrillionoadways and in the santa cruz mountains, that next

storm is going to be aimed with the heaviest of the wind and rain. santa cruz mountains, big sur coast down towards southern california. current system is a level one and it is bringing snow showers to the sierra nevada and those spotty showers will continue tonight here in the bay area. now tomorrow morning you get a little bit of a breather. there will only be spotty showers like today. and then here comes the storm tomorrow night. it is moving in at 730 along the coast and onto the peninsula. pounding rain, strong winds. tomorrow at 11 p.m. heaviest during that late night into sunday morning hours, we will see the potential for some high elevation snow around lake and mendocino county in the hills. that strong level three tomorrow night to sunday. heavy rain, flooding, strong damaging winds, downed trees and outages are what we're expecting. flood watch already posted for all of the bay area beginning at 4 p.m. tomorrow. running until monday night. that's because excessive rain is expected to bring the possibility of flooding. we have

north, near the 101 split. the damage to her car, estimated to cost her well over $1,000 money. jail says will place a financial strain on her family. >> i mean, i feel like i literally did nothing wrong. i just was driving to work and there was no way to avoid that. >> jail tells us she's not the only one who fell victim to this pothole, either. on thursday morning, she says there were at least three other drivers who had to pull over after they ran over it, as well. at juarez, tires and brakes. it was a similar story. we take it almost one, two. >> i can say seven customers in the day. so for that, so many potholes in the city. right. and there are 280 especially owner joel juarez says he thinks the problem is getting worse. this is my first time in three years right here in this business. so many people, they have the same trouble. >> caltrans says it currently has crews working 12 hour shifts to try and fix as many potholes as possible. the one that damaged jls car remain unfilled

friday, getting bigger by the hour with more storms coming, it can be difficult for caltrans to keep up what we saw this past storm system, it brought really heavy downpours across the bay area from the north bay all the way down to the south bay. >> with those downpours, those pretty much opened up these potholes that we were able to fix before the storm reopened. >> caltrans says they do have a system where you can submit claims for reimbursement if a pothole damages your car, but a recent abc7 news i-team investigation shows that for the first half of 2023, less than 1% of those claims were actually approved. a sobering statistic for people like jl, who say they think people should be offered more help. >> honestly, i feel like i could cry. i really wish that they could help me out because i'm a yoga teacher. i'm really trying to do my best in san francisco. >> tim johns, abc seven news in the city of antioch, private security guards will begin patrolling the downtown area in

a few weeks. >> the new initiative will help deal with a rise in crime. it comes as 40% of the police department is on leave because of the ongoing tech scandal investigation. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has the details. >> downtown antioch is booming, says mayor lamar hernandez. thorpe >> a new monica's restaurant opening up smith's landing. we've got, you know, this new barbecue place here. we've the el campanil. it has more shows today than it did before. and so we've been pretty busy in downtown. >> but the mayor acknowledges there's also been a rise in crime. and the police force is understaffed to bridge the gap, the city has hired private security to patrol the downtown and nearby public parking lots. >> the private security firm will alleviate that because these things happen when nobody's around. nobody's watching it, you know, ten, nine, ten, 11, 12:00 at night. so this will serve as an important deterrent. the focus won't just be on crime and break ins, but also rowdy crowds and sideshows. >> one big reason for private security is the antioch police texting scandal. since last

year, more than 40% of the police department is out on paid leave because of the ongoing investigation. >> since the traffic division was basically decimated as a result of the texas of the text racist messaging scandal. unfortunately, we have seen an increase in sideshows and so uh- this private security will serve as as a as hopefully a deterrent to some of the sideshows that we've seen at the marina. >> buford brown is owner of the recently opened buford memphis style barbecue. he supports having extra security, not just because it serves as a deterrent , but hopefully to encourage customers. >> yes, yes, people will feel comfortable coming down to antioch. antioch is a beautiful place and so we want to try to build it up and make sure everybody is feeling safe and secure. when they come downtown antioch sideshows and lack of enforcement is why property owner sean mccauley spent $50,000 of his own money to

very big. >> but some lawmakers are trying to pull the emergency brake. state senator dave cortese introduced a bill that would allow cities and counties to make their own regulations around avs. he was in los angeles friday morning with city leaders discussing this topic. he told me the bill is about safety. >> it will empower local government uh- on any given tuesday uh- in any given city council meeting, whether it's los angeles or somewhere in humboldt, california, they can, you know, adopt a local ordinance to provide safety. and you know, whatever other basic regulations they need in their town because otherwise cities have no say in the matter. >> right now, the california dmv and cpuc are in charge of where avs can operate. and collect paying fares. some local cities say there is a rush to get their infrastructure up to date. burlingame is already planning new construction for el camino real, a project they say is necessary for an avs hit the streets, making sure that the

>> the symbionese liberation army knew her father was a wealthy newspaper publisher. what we want is to get patricia back. for weeks, hearst was locked inside this closet in san francisco. mom dad. >> i'm okay. >> her captors wanted the release of two of its members charged with killing oakland superintendent marcus foster. another demand was to distribute food among poor people in the state. but two months after her abduction, hearst announced through a recording that she had joined the sla, calling herself tania. confirmation came in the form of a surveillance video showing hearst and members of the group robbing the hibernia bank in san francisco. then the group lost six of its members during a shootout involving los angeles police. their safehouse caught on fire while they were inside. it was feared that hearst was among them, but it turns out she and two other members, bill and emily harris, were away at the time. more than 20 years ago, i spoke to dan siegel, an oakland attorney who

back then met up with the surviving members. to me, the most surprising thing that happened during the course of the afternoon that i spent with him was that patty left the house by herself for about 45 minutes and came back with a bag of groceries, and that's certainly suggested to me that she wasn't being held against her will, and was very much a part of whatever these people were doing. >> hearst and the others were arrested on september 18th, 1975. >> she served 22 months in prison. she went on to live a relatively quiet life back east. she's now 69 years old. when she finally wrote her autobiography. hearst documented for the first time another bank robbery in sacramento, where a woman died when one of their guns accidental, fired. hearst was not inside, but was instead waiting in the getaway car. years later, the former members of the sla were tried for that murder and served time. hearst agreed to testify against them after receiving immunity in 2001, then president clinton

hawaiian islands. and it is aimed right for california to uh. and we are going to get slammed. now, keep in mind, atmospheric rivers can shift a little bit and they can stall. so depending on where they end up, that's where we're going to see the strongest impacts. right now it looks like the santa cruz mountains, big sur coast, the peninsula of the bay area and points southward. southern california will get hit pretty hard as we look on live doppler seven. we do have some light to moderate showers from south city heading across into burlingame, california. drive san mateo. so watch out in the inland east bay. we are seeing moraga, walnut creek, ignacio valley road, some showers as well. so while some of you are seeing sun , still some instability in the air and as we look here, this is what's happening around the state. some thunderstorms, some sierra snow right now at this hour. and they will be getting some big time snow as we head towards the weekend. temperatures are in the 40s and the 50s. here's a look at the current system today. scattered

showers, brief downpours. it's just a light level one a chance of thunder that diminishes as we go on towards after sunset time period, but really just spotty showers. 1130 some showers showing up here. 9 a.m. tomorrow. you'll notice some light spotty showers as well. tomorrow afternoon is when that storm begins to get closer to us. so let's look at our headlines tonight. showers thunder chance tomorrow morning. showers. afternoon. evening some rain moving in. and as we head towards tomorrow night into sunday, a strong storm arrive and it has a potential to do damage tomorrow night into sunday. it's a level three, a strong storm, strong damaging winds, heavy rain, flooding, downed trees and power outages are just some of the concerns. as much of california highlighted in that excessive rain potential for sunday. the worst of it from the big sur coast, where they could see up to eight inches of rain even higher totals expected down in southern california, the hills could see 6 to 12in of rain, so

the national weather service in l.a. is calling this a potentially life threatening situation. coming up here in the bay area, we are looking at the potential for some heavy rain as well, going hour by hour. the winds pick up tomorrow evening you will notice 39 miles an hour, half moon bay, even stronger. 53 by early sunday morning. those gusts will remain with us sunday at 6 a.m. and then it really is going to be the kind of wind where you want to stay home. half moon bay, 55 mile an hour winds, very strong winds expected 4:00 tomorrow. the rain begins to approach. 7:00 the rain is moving in. you will notice some heavy rain tomorrow night. reds indicating intense rain moving across sunday morning. could see some high elevation snow to our north. and this really continues sunday morning before sunday afternoon. switches over to showers. but keep in mind, going into the nighttime hours just because it switches to showers doesn't mean the concerns are over. so rainfall totals anywhere from about an inch to over four inches. ben lomond,
