and this is a live look outside tonight. and it's relatively calm right now. but that is expected to change. there is a major storm heading our way and it could be even more intense than the one thatrillionolled through on wednesday. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. let's take a live look from our camera at zephyr cove, overlooking lake tahoe. we have seen snow throughout the day, at times quite heavy. take a look at video from earlier tonight from heavenly mountain. the flakes were flying and it was really coming down enough to cause the camera to periodically freeze. we certainly could use the snow because statewide it is well below normal, and all of this could just be a hint of what's

to come. this weekend. sandhya, are we looking at a three on the storm impact scale? >> still are ama and it has the potential to do some damage this weekend. so let's take a look at it on live doppler seven. this moisture associate with the storm the atmospheric river extending all the way back towards the hawaiian islands. you can see that plume developing. with the area of low pressure right there. and that's going to slam into the bay area this weekend. so we do have a number of watches and warnings to pass along. first, a flood watch 4 p.m. tomorrow until 10 p.m. monday. the flooding caused by excessive rain is possible, especially rivers, streams and creeks. low lying roadways and most of the rivers are expected to be okay, but a few may actually reach flood stage or exceed it. we have high wind warnings shaded in pink for a m to 10 p.m. sunday. the rest of the area under wind advisories. those gusts between 50 to 60 miles an hour means trees will go down. power outages are going to happen tomorrow night into sunday. it's a strong level

three on our abc seven news storm exclusive live storm impact scale. a heavy rain, flooding, strong damaging winds, downed trees and outages. as we look at local live doppler seven right now, this is just residual showers from the last system. right now it is coming down across the santa cruz mountains, ben lomond area. we are seeing some scattered showers on the peninsula, east palo alto, palo alto, redwood city. as we widen the picture here, the current system is a one. the next one is a three. but i do want to show you the timing of all of this. some spotty showers tomorrow morning if you have plans at noontime. still very light. and then here comes the heavier rain and stronger winds. late tomorrow night going into sunday morning. and this will bring some very strong winds. i'll be back with the rest of that timeline ama plus a look at what you can expect for the rest of your weekend. coming right up. >> all right. we'll check back. thank you. sandhya well, there has been little to no chance of drying out from our series of storms and that is prompting concern, especially in the south bay, which could be hit hard

this weekend. abc7 news south bay reporter dustin dorsey has a look at how people are getting ready. reporter the rays of sunshine peeking through the clouds of rain were a welcome sight in the south bay. >> while it lasted. >> the national weather service issued a flood watch for the entire bay area, which will be in effect from 4 p.m. saturday through 10 a.m. monday. a wind advisory will be in effect for the santa clara valley from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. on sunday. >> strong wind and heavy rain mean more damage, and you didn't have to drive far in santa clara county to find existing issues from past storms in the santa cruz mountains, reminders of damaging rain and wind from 2023. josh felder saw plenty on his bike ride from half moon bay. we ride up here a lot uh- up on these mountain roads in the santa cruz mountains for a long time. >> and, um, last winter with all of the rains that we had and it was certainly probably the most rain i've seen since i was a child, growing up here, a lot of the mountain roads have just taken a serious beating, and

it's not just the roads. >> the effects of 2023 storms are still felt across the region. >> we had that series of atmospheric rivers blow through over several months. we lost over 1000 trees in the city of san jose. >> with sunday's storm expected to bring more rain to already saturated soil, more fallen trees are possible. the department of transportation says homeowners should call them if they need assistance. downed trees don't just cause damage, but may lead to flooding as well. valley water crews have been utilizing the break in the atmospheric river events to clear trees and anything else that's still left over. >> people may just think that, oh yeah, creeks, streams, you know, they naturally just flow and there's no concern about, you know, something blocking them. and when you look at those pictures, you see the, you know, leaves and debris and, and sticks and, and trees and all those kinds of things that can that can be obstructions in our local waterways. >> 2023 was a challenge. but even the darkest storms are followed by a bit of light. every event is different. but these agencies have learned how

to better prepare and adapt when the rain hits to keep the community as safe as they can be, experts say the best way for you to be ready for the storm is to know where your nearest sandbag locations are, know whether or not you're in a flood zone, and sign up for city and county emergency alerts in san jose. dustin dawsey abc seven news and those alerts come in handy. >> residents in santa cruz are preparing for intense rainfall this weekend. community emergency response volunteers went door to door today. as you see, warning those in flood prone areas to be ready to evacuate people living by local creeks and rivers are especially vulnerable to breaching. over the next two days, rain and flooding wreaked havoc on the area last winter and with the coming storms, there's a good chance it might happen again this year. >> you should be prepared. you know, if it happened last year, yesterday, ten years ago, you should have a memory and should be prepared. >> some residents and business owners have also taken proactive measures like stacking sandbags in anticipation of the wet weather. in southern california, long beach residents are still

cleaning up after being pounded by heavy rain on thursday. low lying neighborhoods around long beach experienced flooding after seven inches of rain came down in the area. now, with the second rain storm coming this weekend, locals are being encouraged to pack sandbags while the weather is still cooperating. >> the city has done everything we can to mobilize resources while pre-stage resources to support our community. but individuals need to take time now while we have the sun out to go, get sandbags, especially if you live in low lying, historically vulnerable areas and many long beach residents like the ones here, aren't taking any chances this time around. >> we are tracking the weekend weather with live doppler seven, and you can to scan the qr code that you see on your screen. bottom left corner. you can just scan it with the camera on your phone. that will take you to our website. abc seven news.com, where you can stream live doppler seven in the east bay, a weekend birthday celebration in wine country came to a violent end near the oakland international airport. a woman says her son and some friends

were robbed at a gas station as they filled up their rental vehicle. it happened in an area that's received a lot of publicity recently, with in and out in denny's announng they were closing because of a crime concerns. abc seven new reporter tara campbell has reaction from the victim's mother. i'm offering a $10,000 reward for any tips that lead to the arrest of the people who violently robbed my son and his friends. >> maxie share is talking about this incident monday at the 76 gas station on hegenberger road near the oakland airport, offering up a reward to help identify the people in this surveillance video, which is also being used in the police investigation. >> the world doesn't have to be this way, the texas attorney has roots in the bay area and says the attack happened while her son and friends were gassing up their rental car. >> family and friends had spent the weekend in sonoma celebrating his 21st birthday. outcomes >> five different men they bust the windshield, take all of the luggage and didn't stop there. they then pulled my son out of

the car, started hitting him with the gun. >> she met her son in oakland at the police station. this is commonplace, is what i kept being told. >> you should know better than to gas up in oakland. >> but she says there was no warning. this is a dangerous area. >> now that it happened. oh, i'm researching hegenberger like crazy and it doesn't take a deep dive to learn. >> hegenberger has been taking a hit in and out burger, announcing the closure of its location because of crime, and now denny's also closed, and abc seven news insider phil matier says there doesn't seem to be any answers in sight. >> i haven't heard anything solid coming out of oakland city hall yet. i hear some platitude about, we're going to work together. we're trying. we're coming up with different strategies, more beat cops, this, that. but it's the same thing i heard a year ago. >> and when asked about monday's robbery at the 76 gas station, oakland mayor shengtao responded with a statement reading in part

as mayor, i have prioritized the critical gateway to oakland and surged police presence and employ technology to deter and respond to criminal behavior. however, more is necessary, and i will be working with regional and state leaders to protect this tourist gateway into oakland. tara campbell. seven news the city of antioch is hiring private security to help police the downtown area. >> the city has seen a spike in crime and a rise in sideshows. the mayor blames the police texting scandal that broke last summer. since then, the police force has been suffering from lack of personnel and more than 40% of the city's police force is on leave because of the scandal. >> since the traffic division was basically decimated as a result of the texas of the text racist messaging scandal. uh, unfortunately, we have seen an increase in sideshows, and so, uh, this, uh, private security will serve as, uh, as, uh, as hopefully a deterrent to some of the sideshows that we've seen at

the marina. many business owners in the area say they welcome the private security and hope it will encourage more customers to visit downtown state lawmakers are considering a proposal requiring businesses in california to have narcan available in first aid kits under assembly bill 1976, employers would have to have naloxone nasal spray on hand to treat someone who has taken an opioid like fentanyl. >> naloxone is the life saving ingredient in the overdose antidote narcan san francisco state assemblyman matt haney introduced the bill this week. if ab 1976 is signed into law later this year, it would go into effect january first of next year. developing news now the u.s. has launched retaliatory air strikes across iraq and syria. officials say the air assault targeted dozens of sites used by iranian backed militias and the revolutionary guard. it's the opening salvo in the u.s. response to the deadly iran backed militant drone strike that killed three u.s. troops in jordan last weekend. the massive barrage hit more

pushback from state lawmakers, claiming that local governments should make their own regulations regarding driverless vehicles. meanwhile, local communities are stepping up their efforts to prepare for the new wave of automated vehicles, making sure that the streets uh- pavement markings, the signage, the signals, all of that is a properly uh- upgrade to be able to be recognized by the computers. lawmakers say they want to make sure the rollout of this new technology happens very safely. at&t is pushing for a regulatory change that could mean the end of landlines for their customers in california, but that could leave many people, especially in rural areas, without any communication . 80 year old pat pereira relied on her landline for 58 years. she got a cell phone for the first time last year when her landline was disconnected, but she lives in a dead zone in calaveras county and can't get reliable service. pat is desperate to get the landline reconnected, but at&t says it doesn't want that obligation anymore. >> look what they did to me. how

many little old ladies out there has this happened to? and they didn't know how to fight it? come on. i'm a fighter. >> the california public utilities commission is considering the at&t submission. it will hold four public hearings through march in the south bay. a store that's been empty for nearly 20 years just turned a whole lot brighter. night house studio is opening up what it calls the dream club lab. it's a video and light sculpture installation in downtown san jose. mayor matt mahan was on site to help kick off the display. the whole exhibition takes place within the empty commercial space. all right, let's get a check on our weather. because it sounds like we might be in for it this weekend. sandy. yeah absolutely. >> it's going to turn stormy late tomorrow night into early sunday morning. let me show you some of the storm concerns with the incoming atmospheric river high likelihood of urban flooding, trees, downed, power outages, high likelihood, shallow landslides. is up there, and river flooding is going to

go into the medium category for some of our rivers. not all of them, because we are not expecting all the rivers to meet or exceed flood stage, but a few of them, especially in the santa cruz mountains, could be in jeopardy. here. here's a look at that strong atmospheric river level three storm moisture plume extending all the way across the pacific, and it is heading in our direction tomorrow night into sunday. heavy rain. we're expecting strong, damaging. winds. there will be flooding on sunday, especially downed trees and outages. here's a look at the excessive rain potential for the bay area tomorrow. you can see pretty much everyone highlighted locally, but this is not going to be just a local event. it is up and down the state central coast, down to southern california. and as we take a look at sunday, that excessive rain potential pretty much goes into the yellow category. so an increasing risk for us locally and a very high risk from big sur coast all the way down to southern california, the los angeles weather service is calling it potentially life

threatening situation in terms of the flooding down south here locally, we are tracking some showers on live doppler seven moderate to heavy. and intensity around the santa cruz mountains. this is the area that's going to get hit hard by this atmospheric river points southward around places like big sur and southern california as well. but we're going to see some heavy rain, not just in the santa cruz mountains. other parts of the bay area as well, out towards vasco road, altamont. it is coming down. and in the sierra homewood. and this is really a pretty view of the snow falling. they're going to be talking about snow in feet by the time we head into early next week. right now, snow showers would chain controls on all roads leading up to tahoe. winter storm warning 4 a.m. sunday until 4 a.m. tuesday. we're talking up to 5 to 6ft over the peaks very difficult travel, winter storm warning has been issued for lake county and mendocino county hills for that sunday time period, above 3000ft. they are expecting 4 to 8in of snow, so definitely is

going to get interesting here. a few morning showers. those showers really light and scattered for the afternoon. then by 3 p.m. things start to pick up. it's a one through the morning, scattered showers, brief downpours, slippery roadways. your temperature is now 30 to 50. the headlines, spotty showers through tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon, evening. wet and windy. and sunday is going to turn very stormy. so those winds pick up. they'll get even stronger 50 miles an hour. sunday morning, topping 60 there and a half moon bay. you'll notice at 11 a.m. still gusty 50 mile an hour winds in the afternoon in the rainfall intensity picks up as we head towards late tomorrow night and it just gets worse as we head towards sunday morning. 3 to 5 a.m. you see that snow over the hilltops? 730 this is your stormiest time period even into noon and then you see just scattered showers for the rest of the afternoon and the evening . rainfall projections. this is not taking you through the whole storm. half a foot in the santa cruz mountains. the rest of you between 1 and 3in your morning
