now at five, a full weekend of wet and windy weather now bleeding into the start of your workweek, flooding and power outages forcing some school closures this morning. p-g-and-e's crews working overnight trying to restore power to hundreds of thousands of customers across the bay area . >> now, cleanup will continue on toppled trees in several neighborhoods, some of those trees coming down on occupied vehicles, sending people inside to the hospital. southern california also being hit hard by this atmospheric river. >> governor newsom declaring a
5:01 am
state of emergency in multiple counties and more rain is headed their way. >> but that rain did not stop the 2024 grammy awards show. we have the major highlights from last night and including a surprise announcement from one of the night's big winners. >> you are. i left all of you off the group chat last night because jobina and i were on fire and i just didn't want to bother you on a sunday night. >> i was looking like, where was my recap? >> actually, the grammys were the best grammys that i've seen in maybe my life. oh my gosh, it was so, so surprising. fun, interesting. good. meanwhile, you have no power. >> i was to say i lost power yesterday. still without power this morning. so i missed a lot of the grammys. and then finally towards the end, i started streaming it on the ipad. i was able to get wi-fi, but sometimes we don't even get wi-fi when we lose power. so yeah, but i love the tracy chapman luke combs. that was one of my favorite moments from what i got to see. >> we'll get into it, but let's
5:02 am
talk about this weather. yeah. >> so we still have winds to talk about. the heaviest, but the worst of the storm is done. but we still have to deal with some scattered downpours this morning. here's live doppler seven. we'll take you down into the santa cruz mountains. santa clara county. we do have scattered downpours that are stretching into fremont this morning into dublin and livermore. so while we're through with the worst of the storm, we still have to deal with leftover scattered showers and downpours this morning. take a look. we do have a few lightning strikes associated with this line, so it's not out of the question. we could have a thunderstorm this morning. winds have backed off tremendously, but they're still gusty in spots. we're gusting to 23 in santa rosa near 20 in oakland. but this is nothing compared to the winds we had gusting 60, 70, 80mph yesterday evening. but we still have high wind warnings in effect until 8 a.m. look at the wind forecast to pretty active through about 9 a.m, and then they drop off dramatically so that would be very helpful to crews later on this afternoon trying to get out there and restore the power. we'll keep it at a level two this morning
5:03 am
until about 8 a.m. showers and thunderstorms in the forecast, gusty winds and please do watch out for debris on roads. we've had a lot of trees come down the last 24 hours. a lot of limbs everywhere. let's check in with gloria and see how that commute is going this morning. >> yeah. you know, drew, you mentioned it. but if you're like me and you were in an area that was hit hard by the storm, definitely watch out for those tree branches on the roads this morning. i know when i was driving into work today, there was a lot of debris on the road. branches, leaves. so look out for that and maybe give yourself a little bit of extra time this morning we're going to get a live look outside right now at our bay bridge camera. and there is a sigalert in effect there. and that's because a big rig hit a guardrail and split in half. and right now the lane right there on the off ramp is blocked. there are some delays because of that. so we're going to keep monitoring that for you throughout the morning and keep monitoring the bay area roads. because of the storm as well guys. thank you gloria, with a severe weather is impacting p-g-and-e's. >> so many people like gloria waiting for the lights to come back on this morning after more
5:04 am
than 320,000 customers lost power yesterday during the peak of the storm. now still a mess this morning though. look at this outage map right here. this is from p-g-and-e's. the different colors represent different clusters. so if you look here and you see the green, it means there are up to 50 customers who don't have power. the yellow means up to 500. and then orange is up to 5000. so we see a lot of that concentrated up in the north bay. a lot of that in the south bay around palo alto and even further south, we see significant outages across the bay area. we saw winds whipping across the bay area yesterday. trees toppled and power lines down in the east bay. two trees came down on this home in berkeley, and it was a really close call in walnut creek when a tree fell on a residential building. six people were displaced. now in san francisco, more aftermath with trees down throughout the city, across streets and on power lines. >> we've got outages, of course, all across the bay area,
5:05 am
including in san francisco and the east bay and other places. but the hardest hit right now appears to be the north bay, the peninsula and the south bay, p-g-and-e's says crews will continue to make repairs and to get customers restored as soon as possible. >> another major impact of these storms flights at san francisco international airport. here's a live look from the tarmac right now. abc seven news reporter lena howland is at sfo this morning. so, lena, tell us about the delays in the cancellations. >> hey, reggie, good morning to you. according to flightaware, there have already been a total of 36 delays and 27 cancellations so far today. but going inside of sfo, we just took a look around and you wouldn't really be able to tell it was pretty empty in there. pretty slow. and it did kind of seem as if most people found out about these delays and cancellations yesterday, or well before their flights were supposed to leave, but it was a much different story out here yesterday. here's a look at the long lines, folks saw. it was
5:06 am
one delay after the next with people trying to pass the time by playing cards and watching football, others getting pumped up about their san francisco 40 niners headed to the super bowl this morning. the airport had a much different feeling it was cleared out other than a few people we saw sleeping on couches next to the united ticketing counter. we talked to one traveler from the bay area this morning who's 11 a.m. flight to burbank today was canceled yesterday during the storms. luckily, he was able to get rebooked on a flight five hours earlier, landing at lax instead. >> i was thinking yesterday with all the delays and everything, that's why i got here extra early. i was thinking that there might have been a backlog from yesterday, but this is really surprising. >> yeah, like, where is everybody? yeah, they're still at home. >> they are. they're taking the later flights now. >> and even our own sports and news crews headed out to cover the super bowl in las vegas. got stranded at sfo when their flights were also canceled
5:07 am
during the storms. luckily, they were able to get rebooked on a different flight out of oakland. instead, they just had to race across the bridge to get there in time. so this is a very good reminder to anybody who is traveling today to make sure you check your flight status before you go live at sfo. lena howland , abc seven news. thank you. lena >> caltrain is warning of possible delays during the morning commute because of downed trees. this one caused officials to cancel train service between millbrae and sunnyvale yesterday. caltrain says crews are stretched thin, and that could cause even more delays during your commute today. now, the storm is leaving behind a trail of damage in the north bay. toppled trees, flooding, power outages is the cause of all sorts of problems, including some schools having to close today. so here is the list from the sonoma county office of education. they all report storm related flooding or power issues. fort ross elementary says it had damage to a part of its school, and as abc seven news reporter, cornell bernard tells us, novato residents are dealing with a lot of high water
5:08 am
. >> when i left to work around 2 a.m. this morning, the street was bare. came back uh- eight hours later, and next thing you know, we got water up to our ankles. some parts may have even maybe even close to your knees. >> sergio melendez can't believe how fast this flood water rose on armstrong avenue in novato. some brave drivers decided to venture past the closed road signs, but folks living in the novato rv park are feeling stranded. >> i got a lot of cars stuck in, a lot of people trapped in, you know, everybody's got stuff to do. um we're all just kind of being held against their own will. >> across town, flooding left garden court inundated. >> we woke up and it was all flooded out here. >> the water about 2 to 3ft deep and coming close to homes. some cars stalled out. neighbors say it's runoff from nearby novato creek. >> once there's a drain pipe here and once it starts coming backwards, we're done. you know, it's not. it's not draining anymore. >> we found slow traffic on northbound highway 101, where
5:09 am
the left lane was under water. caltrans on scene trying to drain it in santa rosa. firstrillionesponders say the driver of this crushed car survived after a redwood tree fell onto northbound 101 near todd road. >> we received a call of a tree down onto a motorist and our crews arrived on scene along with santa rosa fire and found a motorist trapped inside their vehicle with a redwood tree on top of it. >> the driver was hospitalized with serious injuries across sonoma county, there were dozens of downed trees reported, some which struck homes and power lines in bodega bay. this tree fell and damaged two neighboring homes. with the wind that is coming through and throughout the rest of the day, um, we are just going to be extremely busy with these hazardous conditions. >> i love these chickens. >> girl back in novato, benedetta dalbesio was trying to keep her backyard chickens safe and dry. >> my chickens don't like it. no, no, they're in their coop
5:10 am
going. what the heck is going on? it's crazy. >> yeah, you got to keep the chickens dry. caltrans using those electronic freeway signs asking drivers to avoid travel sunday and monday. it is very hazardous out there. the wind and rain has been relentless in the north bay. cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> now let's look at southern california, where seven counties and san luis obispo county are under a state of emergency as they are being slammed by this weather. look at this video out of santa barbara county, where a road is a river in total, 400 million people across the state are under flood alerts. here's abc news reporter brian clark. >> that storm bringing with it torrential rains, life threatening floods and damaging winds and mudslide. >> and it's going to be very slow moving. >> and there are some initial indications now that it may stall out monday into tuesday near la county, 40 million people in the state under flood
5:11 am
alerts. >> in los angeles county, numerous evacuees, nation warnings, officials creating emergency shelters for people and animals. >> the la river has already started to rage and this was coming from almost nothing in our ago. the atmospheric river like a firehose into los angeles for the next two days, in addition to the rain, the sierra nevada could see snowfall that will be measured in feet. >> evacuation orders issued in santa barbara county, where they've already received 300% of their normal rainfall for this time of year, the governor's office has put 21 swift water rescue teams on standby and is readying the california state guard for rapid deployment. brian clark, abc news, new york. >> it has just been a mess across california. look at some of these wind gusts that we had. pablo point in marin county had a peak wind gusts yesterday of 102mph. loma prieta 98mph. los gatos 87. even in the city, we had winds gusting over 60mph to
5:12 am
similar story in half moon bay and in the oakland hills. so many areas yesterday saw winds in excess of 50 60mph. even stronger in our hills. that is why we have massive power outages across the region this morning, and in those winds are slowly backing off. but we still have some downpours to deal with through the east bay this morning we have this line of showers worked through fremont on their way through dublin into livermore this morning, so we will be tracking scattered downpours throughout the rest of the day. a flood watch is still in effect for the region, but we have a flood advisory because a lot of standing water on our roads from the city down to the peninsula and the santa cruz mountains, this until 9 a.m. this morning. so it's a level two today, a moderate storm for those showers and downpours. thunderstorms and winds are still gusting. please watch out for debris on the roads this morning a lot of trees came down. let's talk about the winds. they're still gusty right now. by midday lunchtime. this is 12 p.m. they're backing off significantly. and then into the afternoon they turn very light,
5:13 am
which is great news for crews. they can finally get out there and repair a lot of these lines when it comes to rain, scattered showers and downpours throughout the afternoon. so keep the umbrella handy and watch out. we could have some isolated thunderstorms popping up highs going into the upper 50 to near 60 degrees. reggie drew thank you. >> the 40 niners are in las vegas this morning just days away from super bowl 58. some of their most dedicated fans braved the rain to send them off more production issues for boeing. >> the new issue facing the company to rework some of its planes arrested at the grammys. >> the strange twist at last night's awards for the best rap when your child has moderate—to—severe eczema, it's okay for them to show off.
