>> so many special moments at the grammys last night. cannot wait to show you some of the highlights. good morning america. >> yeah. it was just a show that honored the legends. it was so special. oh my gosh. what a moment. also ahead the new potential problem for boeing, but this time involving dozens of 737 planes that are still being built. >> we have our transportation expert here with us so i know you'll have more on that to break it down. we do begin with what's being called one of the most dramatic weather days in recent memory in california. >> state of emergency in southern california as heavy rain hits the state, bringing the threat of flash floods. ginger is in los angeles with the latest. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: george, you remember the movie grease when they had that drag race. in the basin of the l.a. river. lot of movies have been shot there. this is the l.a. river now. usually dry, but now ferocious rapids taking it over. we've had more than a month's worth of rain in 12 hours and we have 24 hours to go of this fire

hose of moisture. overnight, unrelenting rain, leading to flash flooding left some freeways and multiple rescues. in ventura county, california, the 101 freeway shut down, first responders dropping ladders to man caught in those rapidly rising waters. in san bernardino county, three people rescued. they were found clinging to a tree after their vehicle was submerged after they crossed a flooded road. the state getting up to a foot of rain already. 40 million americans still under flood watch. this car hydroplaning then flipping over a barricade when speeding down interstate 5. the saturated grounds with gusty winds dropping a tree on this car. the l.a. fire department arriving minutes later. winds in the bay area howling over 80 miles an hour, above hurricane speeds. at least 900,000 customers without power. and a dramatic rescue playing out in santa rosa after this massive tree fell on to a car.

the driver was trapped inside. later rushed to the hospital with severe injuries. we spotted teresa reeves preparing for the storm an helped her out. she's lived in sun valley more than 30 years. >> never had to get evacuated here. >> now you've got evacuation orders. >> i know, and i'm not sure how i'm going to handle it. i'm in a wait and see position. i have got my sandbags. >> an in oregon, a close call. this car careening off the road, narrowly missing other drivers who pulled onto the shoulder. wet roads and bald tires led to that wreck. if that raging l.a. river doesn't do it for you, look at this radar the last 24 hours. los angeles is right in the center of that. that's why we've seen flash floods overnight. this isn't going to move much. we still have hours of warnings to go. they're asking a lot of people to not go on the roads if you don't have to because flash flooding can easily submerge

your car. we've seen 6 to 9 inches already. lot of the foot hills will end up with closer to a foot. that's why that rare high risk, the highest level there is, for flash flooding, including los angeles for a second day. anaheim, san clemente where we'll continue to see the moisture. it's not just tonight. you will end up seeing showers heavy through tuesday night. >> all right, ginger. incredible to see that river behind you. thank you so much. from you we're going to rob marciano who is up the coast in santa barbara, where coastal flooding is causing major problems. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning, gio. the rain may have shifted south but the water keeps coming here in the santa barbara coast line. look at this wave action we've got. eight to ten foot waves continually pounding on this beach, eating away at the sand. at the same time, the runoff from all the rain has been pouring out trying to get dumped into the ocean. we have all sorts of debris,

erosion. everything has been put to the test with this wave action. this isn't the only spot. coastal flood advisory, heavy surf from san francisco to san diego which will extend through today, if not in some spots through tomorrow. the airport, santa barbara airport, was shut down yesterday. commercial flights have all been cancelled because of high water. hopefully, they'll reopen later on today. we got half a foot of rain in some of the mountainous areas. some of the burn scar areas have been evacuated, have not slid. we're hoping no more land slides with the next match of rain coming. linsey? >> rob, certainly. we turn to the showdown on capitol hill over the border and aid to ukraine. last night a bipartisan group of senators unveiled a compromised bill but the republican speaker of the house says it's dead on arrival. our senior congressional correspondent rachel scott has the very latest for us. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: linsey, good morning to you. this is the most significant border security and immigration deal between democrats and republicans in over a decade.

but then within hours mike johnson made it clear it is not going anywhere in the house. this is a massive package, $118 billion. that includes $20 billion for border security, including shutting down the border when crossings reach $5,000 a day an making it difficult to claim asylum in u.s. $15 billion for ukraine, $15 billion for israel. the president calling it the toughest and fairest set of border reforms in decades. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell saying it provides direct and immediate answers to the crisis at the border. but this bill faces republican resistance in the house before it was even released. donald trump, who wants to run on this issue of immigrations has been urging republicans to reject this compromise. and house speaker mike johnson making it clear it is dead on arrival. he says it will not even get a vote in the house, calling it worse than he had anticipated, linsey. >> the senate and house it seems are moving on two separate tracks with republicans pushing for it with their own package with aid for israel.

>> reporter: remember, it was republicans who demanded border security in exchange for additional funding for israel and ukraine. now the house is moving forward with just aid to israel. that throws into doubt any future aid to ukraine. while they are rejecting this set of border provisions, they are taking the rare step moving forward with a vote to impeach the homeland security secretary, linsey. >> all right. rachel scott for us from capitol hill, thank you very much. george? overseas the u.s. military action in the middle east. series of strikes over the weekend in retaliation for the deadly drone attack that killed three u.s. service members and attacks on international shipping. chief white house correspondent mary bruce is tracking the latest. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, george. it remains to be seen if these strikes will be enough to get iran to back off, as the president hopes, or spark further escalation, as the president fears. what is clear this morning, this is far from over. this morning president biden vowing further retaliation, as the u.s. launches a wave of air strikes against iran backed militant groups across the middle east.

it began late friday, a powerful response to the drone attack that killed three american soldiers and injured more than 40 at a remote u.s. base in jordan. the u.s. hitting 85 targets at seven different locations inside iraq an syria, including command control centers and rocket and missile depots. local authorities reporting dozens killed. u.s. officials say the strikes were successful in degrading and disrupting the militant's ability to attack u.s. forces and that there's more to come. >> this was the beginning of our response. there will be more steps. some of those steps will be seen, some may not be seen. >> reporter: a retaliation campaign now running alongside the allied effort to halt attacks from iran backed militants, targeting vital international shipping routes. over the weekend, the u.s. and u.k., backed by six partners, hitting dozens of houthi targets across yemen. strikes launched by war ships and fighter jets. the u.s. also taking out cruise

missiles that posed an imminent threat to u.s. navy ships and merchant vessels in the region. the coalition saying they will not hesitate to continue to defend lives and the free flow of commerce, but weeks of strikes on the houthis have not halted their attacks. still, the president standing by his response. >> are the strikes working? >> yes! >> reporter: now, the president is adamant he does not seek a wider war with iran. the goal here is to stop these attacks on u.s. forces and these vital shipping route, a goal that so far weeks of u.s. strikes have failed to achieve. now, all of this coming as this morning secretary of state antony blinken is once again heading back to the region, hoping to finalize a deal to release the remaining hostages and get critically needed humanitarian aid into gaza. george? >> mary bruce, thanks. gio? now a new probably problem for boeing, but this time involving dozens of 737 planes that are still being built. boeing's commercial airplane ceo writing, quote, a supplier notified us of a nonconformance

in some 737 fuselages. here's the issue. two holes that may have not been drilled there exactly to the company's requirements. boeing may need to make adjustments to about 50 planes. the good news is that those planes have not been delivered. >> what about the 737's that are in the air? >> reporter: that's an important question. boeing insists there are no safety issues with those planes, just these newer ones. but the truth is, all eyes are on boeing. especially within the company itself. and so for the next several days, they're going to focus exclusively on quality control because we all remember that door plug flew off the max 9. lot of people focusing on that. >> so many issues. >> yeah. >> bad timing for boeing. >> bad timing. >> all right, gio. now to the deadly wild fires ripping through the coast line in chile. thousands of homes burned, hundreds of people missing, and more than 100 confirmed dead. the death toll is only expected to rise. victor oquendo join us with details. good morning, victor.

>> reporter: good morning, linsey. these fires broke out in central chile on friday and have been burning ever since, killing at least 112 people. that number is expected to rise. the worst of it along a resort city. entire neighborhoods devoured by flames and smoke, trapping people inside their homes. officials saying around 200 people are missing with 3,000 to 6,000 homes impacted. the nearly 100 fires come amid a summer heat wave in chile, consecutive days of sweltering dry temperatures above 90 degrees. images of burned out vehicles on roads point to a botched evacuation effort, with some residents saying that order to leave came far too late. the cause of the fires now under investigation, as officials believe they may have been intentionally set sunday and monday declared national days of mourning. george? >> really difficult situation down there, okay, victor. thank you very much. we're going to switch gears to the grammys. it was a golden night. lara here with all the

following headlines including one of the most dramatic days in weather in history. california slammed with more than a month's worth of rain in 24 hours. more is on the way. 40 million americans are under alerts. ginger tracking it from los angeles. notre dame cathedral is expected to open later this year weeks before christmas. the reopening celebration will last until june of 2025. the reconstruction and restoration project has been under way since fire devastated the land mark nearly five years ago. we now know the final matchup of the 2026 men's world cup. it will be held in new jersey's met life stadium, home to the giants and jets. the tournament kicks off june 2026 in mexico city. canada will also host matches with the final set for july 19th. that is gonna be massive. we still have lots more ahead, including how amazon wants to change the way you shop again. that's coming up. now the jennifer crumbley trial. jury expected to start deliberations today for the michigan mom whose son shot and killed four students at his high

school. trevor ault is at the courthouse in pontiac. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, george. so the jury had the weekend to process two weeks of testimony including hearing from this mother herself. now all that's left this morning is for the judge to explain instructions on these four counts of unvoluntary manslaughter and they will decide if jennifer crumbley is guilty. this morning jury deliberation soon set to begin in the trial of jennifer crumbley. >> that was the hardest thing i have had to stomach is that my child killed other people. i wish he would have killed us instead. >> reporter: if convicted she could be sentenced to as much as 60 years in prison charged with four counts of unvoluntary manslaughter for the four classmates her son murdered in november of 2021. a group of 12 jurors and five alternates will decide her fate. ten women, seven men, several of them parents and gun owners, all of them have been in the courtroom hearing evidence and arguments the past two weeks.

>> i am asking that you find jennifer crumbley not guilty, not just for jennifer crumbley but for every mother out there doing the best they can. >> reporter: the defense argues crumbley was a hyper vigilant mother who made some mistakes, but never could have known her son was a threat. but the prosecution says she and her husband bought their son the gun used in the shooting, failed to secure it and ignored a number of red flags with his mental health, including declining to take him home from school the day of the shooting despite seeing these disturbing drawings. >> not only did she not do it, she doesn't even regret it. because of that, four people died. >> reporter: a conviction would mark the first time in american history the parent of a school shooter was found guilty in their child's deadly attack. >> she tried to show these jurors that all parents make mistakes and parents aren't

perfect. but i think jurors are going to have to decide is this acceptable for these parents to engage in the conduct that was testified to and the evidence demonstrated at jennifer's trial and somehow blamed everyone else but accept any responsibility themselves. >> reporter: and jennifer crumbley testified while she and her husband did gift the gun to their son, she said it was her husband's responsibility to secure it. whether or not she's convicted, her husband will face his own trial set to begin next month. guys? >> the details in the story are so shocking. thank you very much for that. now a frightening moment caught on camera when a pilot falls on a moving walkway at denver airport. the pilot said the walkway swallowed his foot and now he's suing. demarco morgan is here with more. these images are unbelievable. good morning. >> reporter: they are. could you imagine it happening to you? it happened to a pilot who found himself trapped and in desperate need of help in the video you'll have to see yourself.

caught on camera, this morning terrifying moments when a delta pilot's foot gets stuck in a moving walkway at denver international airport. surveillance footage showing the pilot heading off the walkway when his foot suddenly gets trapped at the end. he tries to step off, but it would be too late. bystanders quickly coming to his rescue. >> no better way to explain it than he was really scared. >> reporter: these pictures show the damage to his shoe and sock. his lawyer says the pilot's injuries were so bad, he missed work for nearly two weeks. >> he suffered some pretty nasty bone contusions, strain of the achilles tendon. >> reporter: he is now suing tk elevator company, which is lawsuit says is responsible for maintenance and repair of the moving walkways. photos show it was missing a plate. abc news reached out to the company for comment but did not receive a response. the elevator company saying in a statement, quote, the safety of the riding public and its

we are back with our gma cover story. jersey shore star mike the situation sorrentino shared a video of him and his wife saving their child from choking. >> good morning. the entire incident captured on the family surveillance cap ra. so frightening. 77% of children under 5 experience nonfatal choking injuries. experts say if you see a baby choking, put them over your forearm and pat their midback which is exactly what mike the situation did. this morning dramatic video of a situation no parent wants to ever be in.

wife. she -- i'm gonna break down. but she's a super hero. >> reporter: the jersey shore cast member telling us he is still processing what happened thursday night, calling it the scariest moment of his life. >> to be honest with you, i have tingles right now talking about it because everything was kind of textbook. we didn't even know it. >> reporter: experts say if you see a baby choking put them over your forearm and give back blows to their mid back. for older kids give them the abdominal thrust or heimlich maneuver with the fist above the belly button moving it in a j shape. doctors say when a child cries after an event like this, it's a good sign. that tell us that the airway is open but they should still get checked out by a medical provider. mike tells me they are going to take cpr classes but they are so thankful they had that dechoking device handy. just be sure they are fda registered, guys. >> moved so quickly there. >> good for all parents.

those cpr classes. >> absolutely, no doubt about it. it is also american heart month. gma shining a spotlight all february long on how to protect your heart. and this morning, eva pilgrim has the story of a mom who nearly died from a condition more commonly diagnosed in women. good morning, eva. >> this is a pretty common condition to be diagnosed with. stacey had known she's had this candidate for years. even though at times her own family could hear her leaky heart valve squeaking at the dinner table, she said her doctors told her it wouldn't likely kill her. 55-year-old stacey luce thought she was at the peak of health when she and her husband visited new york city last month. just as they sat down at a broadway show -- >> i felt the room kind of do like a vertigo quick spin and then black. >> reporter: stacey went into cardiac arrest, losing her pulse and consciousness for 17 minutes. bystanders doing cpr and using an aed twice to get her heart beating again.

>> your mind really can't conceive what's going on at that point. >> reporter: the texas mom of two pulling through. doctors saying the episode was linked to mitral valve prolapse, one of the heart valves doesn't properly close and may leave the patient with symptoms like a racing heart, dizziness, fatigue and chest pain. but what's chilling is that mvp can often have no symptoms at all and can lead to sudden death. >> most people who experience cardiac arrest related to mvp, that's their first presentation of the disease. >> reporter: while heart valve disease is only diagnosed in about 3% of the population, nearly 25,000 americans die a year from these heart problems, including mvp. as to who is at risk of sud sudden death from mvp, doctors don't always know, but the most serious cases are typically related to developing an abnormal heart rhythm that can lead to sudden death, something doctors hope to change.

tarantino famously said in the past he's retiring after making his tenth film which reports say will be called "the movie critic." tarantino has been kept quiet about the plot line but it's out there. fans think it's about a cynical film reviewer in the '70s in southern california. that sounds right, doesn't it? some say it was inspired by pauline kale. no word yet on what character pitt would play. the hollywood reporter says production on the movie is set to begin late this year or early 2025. a whole lot of information for a movie that's very mush hush. this morning one of our favorite chefs is cooking up a new project. ina garten. gosh, we love you and your cookbooks. she is gearing up to reveal her first ever memoir. she began her career as a white house staffer eventually working as a budget analyst, focusing on nuclear energy policy for presidents ford and carter. but it was her passion for cooking that inspired a major shift in careers.

>> back now as we celebrate black history month on gma. this morning we're looking at mental health among black women in particular and how the culture of struggling in silence is changing with the new generation. deborah roberts sat down with two women who are paving the way. good morning, deb. >> good morning, linsey. yes, paving the way. it is so important. lately, we've heard a lot of discussion especially from millennials about prioritizing our mental health. but in communities of color, the conversation can be a little tricky, particularly amongst older women who prioritize strength and perseverance. yet a mom and daughter from maryland are trying to bridge that divide. >> i would tell her about other things going on with myself physically, but when it came to mental health, it wasn't a discussion we had in our family. >> from a small child, my emotions, you supress them, you suck it up, you keep it moving.

>> reporter: lauren and glenda boone expressing a long held belief among black women. keep your struggles and your inner most feelings to yourself. the strong black woman is the image that we admire. did you ever think about paying attention to your mental wellness? >> never. i never thought about taking care of my mental health because my generation was taught when you talk about mental, you automatically thought mental illness. so it was very difficult for me to even consider taking care of my mental health. >> that's what we call the super woman scheme. i can do it all, push through, persevere. if i'm stressed, it's my fault and my responsibility. going to a therapist means i'm not doing my job ultimately. >> reporter: but that thinking slowly changing in communities of color. >> black women have always been having to put on a mask like everything's okay. >> reporter: thanks partly to well known figures who are bravely opening up publicly. >> we are usually everybody's therapist. >> yes! ♪

>> reporter: including former destiny's child sing r michelle williams, who speaks openly about her history of depression, and says mental health struggles can look different in women of color. >> irritability is a missed symptom of depression. we think depression is just sadness. once i started getting into therapy more consistently, it started giving me language to everything that i internalized, but didn't know what to say. >> reporter: so there's strength in vulnerability? >> there is strength in vulnerability. i can't tell you how strong you are when you can say, i need help versus thinking your strength is acting out. because the quality of life is so much better when you're not triggered all the time. >> reporter: do you think younger women might be helping their mothers to think about health? do you think it's changing the dynamic? >> it absolutely is. >> when i did start the therapy,

i have to be completely honest with you. i went kicking and screaming. >> reporter: lauren and glenda living proof of that changing dynamic. >> this is our second episode of healing together. >> reporter: even taking their journey online in a you tube series. hoping to inspire other intergenerational conversations among women of color. >> it's helped me to understand me and the makeup of me. >> yes! yes! >> my daughters let me know, you were present, but you weren't present. right off the bat she was like, you never came to my softball games. so my defense for my generation i'm like, are you kidding me? but when i got into therapy and started taking away the layer, that was just a symbol of providing for her, but you weren't there for things that were important to her. >> reporter: when you started to dig deeper, what did you start to discover about yourself? >> oh, girl. [ laughter ] how much time do we have? keep talking about the hard things. that's the only way we'll get

we're facing it, processing it. >> reporter: what's your message to people who are closer to your age who have never even thought about therapy and counseling, but who maybe want to try it? >> don't be afraid. it will change your life. if you're willing to do the work. but if you're willing to do the work, it will be the best thing you have ever done for you. >> reporter: linda's advice is so important because women of color are underdiagnosed when it comes to mental health issues often because things like sleep disturbance, irritability and self-criticism aren't seen as signs of depression, but can be. this issue is as important as your mammogram or your pap smear. as they say, it can change lives. my daughter and i know because we've done some of this work. we've dug deep. it's not easy. we've come so much closer together because of therapy. >> thanks for sharing that. i think it's amazing. i love their strength and vulnerability. they mean so much. >> so much.
