storm. >> watch as we track downed trees, flooding, power outages and lingering showers and thunderstorms still bouncing around. good evening. thank you for joining us. >> i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. fortunately, the biggest improvement tonight is that the winds have significantly died down. >> what a break that is. >> we have abc seven news team coverage, but let's begin with abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian for the latest on conditions right now. spencer. >> okay, dan and i'm i probably don't have to remind you we had these powerful, dangerous, deadly wind gusts yesterday. i just want to show you a quick list of some of the peak gusts up to 102mph at pablo point, 80 98mph at loma prieta. but the most amazing one to me is 87mph at los gatos, which is down at the surface. not one of those high elevations. so you can see why so much damage has been done. right now, the wind is calm. we don't have any wind speeds over ten miles per hour right now, but we still have some showers as you can see on live doppler seven. so let's take a closer look. the heaviest activity right now is down in
5:02 pm
this area from the santa cruz mountains over to the morgan hill area northward up through the mount hamilton region and into livermore. so we've still got some downpours and we still have a storm that is ranked level one on our exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. so for the next few hours, we expect a few more showers. although they may be widespread and isolated, possibly an isolated thunderstorm or two lighter winds, much lighter than we've had of late and watch for debris on the roadways. if you're out driving, here's the forecast animation starting right now, showing that over the next few hours we'll see these showers that are currently falling quickly taper off and go away. giving way to at least partial clearing. dan and emma. >> all right. thank you so much spencer. we will check back with you in the santa cruz mountains. the storm took the life of a man in boulder creek after a tree fell on a home along highway nine. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey spoke with a neighbor and joins us live with the latest tonight. dustin >> anna, you know these trees just like these here in the santa cruz mountains are what makes it so beautiful. but when

storms hit like the one this past weekend, they can be incredibly dangerous. the county tells us that more than 1000 trees came down through throughout the mountains, including in boulder creek, where one came crashing down on 45 year old robert brainard, and he sadly died. a soft rain falls during a solemn day in boulder creek. one person is dead after a massive tree came crashing down onto this house just off of highway nine. chris louth saw it all happen from his house across the street, right across all these. >> it was like one of these bad boys. why? and we could see just like from over here, it went boom, boom, boom, just came down . >> the damage was extensive while the front of the house looked undamaged. the back show the devastation from the impact. cars in the driveway were crushed by the fallen tree, but the sound of the falling tree was not the most terrifying thing. neighbors heard. >> the thing we heard was somebody screaming. but then the

screaming stopped like. like you've ever heard a wounded dog like that, but it wasn't a dog. it was human. the impact of the tree killed 45 year old robert brainard, the third, inside the house. >> a second person in the home escaped and called 911. but ems and fire were unable to save brainard. inside louth wishes he could have done more. >> you live in the mountains. you everybody knows you don't know each other, but you know we all. it's a small community, so i'm pretty sure someone i know knows the person. so >> and it's tough to lose someone. >> it's more so tough. like just there's a tree like, he could have been watching tv in his living room and then boom, gone. louth said he would cringe with every loud crack he heard during the storm. >> the county tells us there were several reports of trees crushing homes as damage was felt throughout the region. >> we had winds over 60 miles an hour at the coast and uh- over 90. in some of the upper elevations in the santa cruz mountains. so that's a pretty
5:05 pm
extraordinary wind event for our county. um, i've been asked by people how many trees came down. i don't know, but the answer is in the thousands. >> thankfully, there were no more lives lost across the county during the busy and hard hitting storm, but this is a reminder of the dangers of mountain living. >> i love living up here. i won't move, this won't stop me. but like, just know that out. boom blink of an eye you'll be gone. >> of course, trees don't come down just on homes or buildings. they also come down on power lines. thousands remain without power, and the county says they're working with p-g-and-e's to get the lights back on as soon as possible. for now, we're live in the santa cruz mountains . dustin dawsey, abc seven news. >> all right. thank you, dustin. crews have a massive job removing a huge eucalyptus tree that fell in san mateo last night. strong winds toppled the tree, which destroyed the front gate to the peninsula. temple beth-el on alameda de la pulgas. it also forced a preschool next

time. the mega storm uprooting dozens of trees across sonoma county caused flooding on roads and vineyards throughout the russian river valley. from forest ville into guerneville, one family says they are stuck in their home in forestville after strong winds toppled the giant tree, taking part of their driveway and some power lines down with it. power lines, pure panic. >> just panic. not knowing what to do. i mean, we're kind of stranded up here. we can't take our car down this driveway and we can't cross the downed power lines until they come in. clear it. i mean, it's always in the back of your mind, especially with this amount of trees. >> but yeah, i guess we weren't expecting if it did fall to, to take a whole portion of our driveway with it. >> in novato, a big cleanup is happening after two power poles snapped after a eucalypt tree fell overnight, leaving neighbors in the dark. power restoration is still happening in that neighborhood, and a big

cleanup job here. the homeowner says he intends to first remove the tree and then repair and rebuild. we're live in santa rosa, cornell, bernard, abc seven news. okay cornell, thank you very much. >> cal state east bay's main campus in hayward will be closed again tomorrow because the power is still out. school administrators say classes are not canceled and the university is operating remote as it did today. cal state east bay's campuses in oakland and concord are up and running and in session crews are working to restore power to more than 143,000 p-g-and-e's customers in the bay area. >> here's a live look at p-g-and-e's outage map. it shows the impact across the region. the north bay has the most outages, almost 53,000. there are also big clusters in the south bay. as you see, and along the peninsula, we do expect to get another update from pg and e at 6:00. >> now in southern california, one community and the santa monica mountains is dealing with a major mess in the aftermath of these storms, a torrential rain turned their street into a

few. a pretty good squad. as joe told espn's pat mcafee, the job of playing quarterback is to manage getting the ball to your playmakers. >> if you look at the weapons that brock's working with, he's figured that offense out. he understands what his position in is and he doesn't try to make a big play. he knows when that chance will come and when he needs to do it. but in most cases, it's okay to punt. i got a pretty good defense too, and that's when we had the same thing right? because he understands it. he's calm in there. he has a great presence. obviously there was some reason that, um, that the 40 niners liked him to be able to take him last in the draft, the things that they saw on tape and i don't think it will matter who who's out there. he's right now he's fortunate because he's got some he's got some pretty good studs out there that can give him the ball. and hey, they can go the distance and nothing wrong with that. everybody's had those in their lifetime so that,
5:16 pm
you know, i don't even think about that twice. i just think that it's a plus for him. >> by the way, joe is involved in a really cool event that will be taking place later this week here in las vegas. it's a charity fundraiser and select fans have the opportunity to actually catch a pass from joe montana. now the cost is $1,500. the charity is run freely. org and what they do is they provide prosthetic limbs for veterans who've lost legs in combat. uh- my old espn buddy kenny mayne is involved with run freely .org. he's helped put this together with joe. so look, maybe you don't have $1,500 or you're not coming to vegas. you could go online, check out run freely org and make a donation to help those who have helped defend us live at opening night at the super bowl, larry biel abc seven sports dan helping any way we can.
5:17 pm

get power back on for everyone. one reporting live in walnut creek. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. that is intense scene there. >> leslie, thanks very much. >> well, earlier today during a break in the rain, we did catch a rainbow over san francisco. >> you know, we deserve that rainbow after we've been through. it was right over the cars driving down the embarcadero. >> yeah. for more now on the weather and the forecast, let's get to abc seven news. weather anchor spencer christian spencer i used to wish for a pot of gold, but now i'm happy just to see a rainbow. >> here's a look at what's going on with our weather right now. live doppler seven. you can see the rain has pretty much ended for much of the bay area, except down here in the south bay. we've got some downpour hours reaching from morgan hill up through the mount hamilton area, up towards livermore. so let's take a look at the storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. it's a level one light storm for the next few hours, we'll see a few more showers, possibly an isolated thunderstorm or two. much lighter wind. obviously than what we had yesterday. so the forecast animation shows that area of rainfall just tapering off in the next couple of hours

we could see flooding on roads, lots, parks and low lying areas overnight, partly to mostly cloudy skies, low temperatures generally in the upper 30s to low 40s. tomorrow so we'll see lots of sunshine with a few clouds lingering, high temperatures tomorrow, generally in the mid to upper 50s. a fairly narrow range, but even though it won't be very mild, i'm sure we'll be happy to see the sunshine. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast light showers on wednesday morning, showers on thursday. so we're ranking this storm system level one on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. but again, just light rain expected. then and then some good news if you like dry weather, start drying out under sunny skies on friday and we start warming up under sunny skies going into the weekend as high temperatures will reach into the low 60s territory. we haven't seen for a while. we'll b
