>> how? one of the presidential hopefuls lost to none of these candidates at the ballot box. >> well, that hurts. good morning. on this wednesday, february 7th, we want to get a check of the weather. >> drew, i know that we're talking about a lot of people having no power, but what are we break yesterday. >> today we get some showers back in the forecast right around lunchtime. for a lot of us. here's our next storm system live doppler seven along with satellite. it's rolling down the coastline. it's hitting eureka this morning and it's on its way into our neck of the woods over the next couple of hours. it is a level one today, scattered showers, some downpours, winds will be gusty. not as bad as sunday, but up to 35mph. possible snow on our highest peaks. just an indication we're getting colder air moving in here. so rain chances they really ramp up, say between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. that's your best window of finding those showers and downpours. those winds do pick up as well. we'll detail that coming up in six minutes. let's check in with gloria and see the commutes going this

morning. you know, the good thing is, drew, that we are not seeing any major incidents this morning. >> so we always like to see that we're going to get a live look outside right now at our emeryville camera. right now we are seeing a slowdown on westbound 80 from highway four to the toll plaza. that will take you about 32 minutes right now. and a look at your drive times for this morning. the usual slow spot. tracy to castro valley that will take you 53 minutes. and so far from highway 85 to the san jose airport. that's in the green 13 minutes from highway one to san francisco. so also in the green. just nine minutes right now, reggie. >> thank you. gloria it's been a long few days and nights for many people in the bay area. the power is finally back on for a lot of folks. but if you look at the p-g-and-e's outage map, you can still see that throughout the area. there's still green and yellow, the occasional orange indicating power outages. in fact, there are about 30,000 customers still without the lights on this morning. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live in san jose, where some of the lights have come back on in just the past couple of

hours. lena >> yeah, reggie. that's right here in this san jose shopping center behind me, the lights actually just came back on within the past couple of hours after they first lost power on sunday. now, with nearly 30,000 customers across the bay area waking up to another day without power, around 10,000 customers had their power restored between ten last night and 5:00 this morning. this outage has been affecting everyone from restaurants and families, and now those with special needs. one woman we talked to says her husband is currently on the third floor of a skilled nursing and assisted living center in saratoga, and she says the facility has been running on an emergency generator since sunday . >> when we're able bodied, we can do it. there not able bodied, you know, and the staff can only do so much. and this is the kind of power outage that needs to be covered. this is the kind of situation that needs to be covered. >> meanwhile, people whose homes

were damaged in sunday's storm are dealing with a new insurance reality. the homeowner of this home in unincorporated scotts valley had a massive redwood tree fall on it and says after getting the run around, he found out insurance will help cover the removal of the tree for an estimated $34,000. and although the lights have come back on here in this location, p-g-and-e's tells me that they that there are still almost 7000 customers here in the south bay without power, live in san jose. lena howland abc seven news. >> thanks so much, lena. now, families on the peninsula are also feeling the frustration from power outages. abc seven drove to a local resource center in half moon bay, staying open to help people get powered up. one family, who lives on the outskirts of the city, has been without electricity since sunday . they say they appreciate p-g-and-e's hard work, but outages during weather events are becoming a constant worry. >> it's really frustrating to feel like we're forgotten about,

frankly, being in a more rural setting and you know, it's just as hard for anyone to go day and day. we without power p-g-and-e's estimates their power will be back on sometime this afternoon, but the couple says they're not counting on it. >> they say they also deal with thick mud and heavily damaged roads near the mountainside. community and there are still some local parks, schools, pools and golf courses staying closed due to the outages in storm damage. we have all of that in one place. abc seven news.com or your abc seven news, bay area app. >> imagine you're dealing with a power outage, so you go to a local hotel and when you're there, you're the victim of a car break in. more than 20 cars are broken into in the parking lot of the larkspur landing hotel in south san francisco in one case, the thieves actually stole a woman's grandmother's ashes from the center console. that victim and another have this message for the thieves and the lawmakers who are in

position to make some change. >> if you have my wife's stuff, if you have deceased ashes, how low of you i wish nothing but karma. >> do something to protect the citizens that you are elected to protect. this this has got to come to a stop across the bay. >> hyatt house in emeryville had nearly 20 break-ins early saturday morning we saw a number of signs indicating around the hotel that guests need to be careful. >> governor newsom is calling on the chp to help stop violent crime in the east bay. oakland mayo says it could happen, and as soon as a week, more than 120 chp officers will help with traffic stops, recovering stolen vehicles and patrolling the hegenberger corridor near the oakland airport. but the area recently made national headlines because of the in-n-out and denny's that closed there. abc seven news insider phil matier tells us what this means chp is not bound

by oakland rules, and that's a quiet little unspoken deal here. >> when they're on the ground with oakland cops, they can do things that oakland cops can't do. >> and phil says one of those things is chasing suspects. oakland police aren't allowed to chase suspects in order to prevent dangerous situations in neighborhoods, unless it's an extremely violent crime in 2023, statistics show violent crimes in oakland increased more than 20. rob trees went up nearly 40, car thefts rose 45. >> a judge is throwing out sentence enhancements for four men accused of murder. this follows the antioch police racist texting scandal. the contra costa county judge says officers violated the california racial justice act. it, quote, prohibits the state from seeking a criminal conviction or sentence on the basis of race, ethnicity or national origin. the four defendants are facing murder charges in a possible gang related shooting in 2021,

along with striking all special circumstances, which can lead to a life sentence without the possibility of parole. the judge will also allow these defendants to impeach the officers or question the credibility of their testimony or evidence based on the racist texts and that is crucial because is what it acknowledges is that the investigation itself has been compromised. the trial is set for march 4th, aaymo driverless car reportedly hit a bicyclist in an inrsection in san frcisco, according to our media partners at sf standard. >> it happened yesterday near 17 and mississippi. waymo says the cyclist was blocked by a truck that had entered the intersection. the waymo vehicle waited their turn but was not able to see the cyclist. once the cyclist became visible. waymo says the car braked but was not able to stop in time. the cyclist had minor injuries.

now cruise executives spoke publicly for the first time about an october incident where a woman was dragged by a driverless car in san francisco after she was hit by another car during a california public utilities commission hearing yesterday. cruise executives called their response regrettable. the judge overseeing the case also told the company there offer to pay a $75,000 fine to settle. wasn't enough. the state could find the company up to $1.5 million. cruise remains under investigation by both state and federal regulators. their permit to operate is still suspended and your voice your vote a defeat for nikki haley in nevada's primary. >> and this was very interesting because abc news projects haley will lose to none of the candidate s option on the ballot . that's likely because many of the state's republican voters are planning to vote for donald trump in a caucus tomorrow. it's a very bizarre situation in nevada. trump wasn't on the primary ballot because

candidates can only participate in either the primary or the caucus. voters can participate in both, but the primary that nikki haley was in isn't binding . the caucus is binding. so whoever wins that then gets all of the delegates. it's very strange. a federal appeals court ruled trump is not immune from prosecution for crimes he's accused of committing during his presidency. the ruling is a major blow to trump's key defense in the federal election subversion case filed by special counsel jack smith. it all stems from trump's alleged efforts to reverse the 2020 election results. he has pleaded not guilty. the appeals court is giving trump until monday to file an emergency stay request, with the court now coming up, the mayor of las vegas sounding off on the relocation of the a's, saying she thinks the team should stay in oakland. taylor swift now threatening legal action against a college student, saying that he's putting her in danger by tracking her, playing 610 this

hill, the republican effort to impeach the head of homeland security has failed, delivering a defeat to house speaker mike johnson. a small group of republicans, including tom mcclintock from the central valley, broke ranks and voted against impeachment. house republicans accuse alejandro mayorkas of willfully refusing to enforce immigration laws and of lying to congress that the border is secure. democrats call the impeachment effort a gop stunt, and now they want to impeach a man for not doing his job. >> when you didn't give him the resources to do it. >> now, the vote comes as mayorkas played a key role in negotiating the new senate bipartisan border and foreign aid bill. it would pump $20 billion into border security. >> developing news on the israel hamas war hamas has responded to a proposed cease fire and hostage deal in gaza. the militant group is calling for a phased withdrawal by israel during a four and a half month

truce during that time, all hostages would be freed and negotiations for a permanent cease fire would take place. the proposal also includes allowing the un to provide humanitarian services and establish housing camps. a historic verdict after a deadly school shooting in michigan. the shooter's mother has been convicted of manslaughter. gloria, we've never seen this before. it could set a precedent. >> it could reggie aqui jennifer crumbley, mother of the 2021 oxford high school shooter, was found guilty of four counts of involuntary manslaughter. the four counts are for each of the four students that her son killed, and she is the first parent to ever be convicted in their child's deadly school shooting. the jury deliberated for 11 hours over the course of two days. they determined that crumbley failed her duty as a parent. she ignored her son's declining mental health and gave him the gun that he used in the shooting. >> that's how our system is supposed to work. the people

spoke. >> i guess i didn't truly believe that they would come back with the guilty verdict. um, and then obviously just relief that they had. >> crumbley faces up to 60 years in prison, and she is expected to be sentenced in april. and her husband goes on trial next month, facing the same four counts of involuntary manslaughter. legal experts say this case sets a legal precedent that will likely open the door for more parents to be held accountable for school shootings. amanda, thanks so much, gloria. >> as san francisco unified is reportedly making big changes to avoid facing a legal battle, according to the chronicle, a bay area attorney is demanding the district shift from citywide board elections to smaller district races by november. the attorney claims the current process possibly violates the california voting rights act if the district does not comply, it could face an expensive battle that could result in paying millions of dollars in legal fees. the seven member board is

expected to vote on adopting individual district elections at its meeting on tuesday. >> computer science could soon be a required part of the curriculum for all california students, assembly member marc berman from menlo park introduced a bill to make every public high school offer at least one computer science class. berman says it's key to helping students succeed in the 21st century. workforce one high schooler from modesto says this type of class has helped expand her knowledge of things like web design, engineering, and i. >> i'm also currently participating in two internships designing a children's book, and being a part of an awesome team that creates graphic designs for small businesses within the community. >> if the bill passes, computer science would become a high school graduation requirement across california. by the 2030 31 school year. >> another curve ball and the a's plans to make the move to las vegas. the mayor of sin city now saying the team should stay in oakland. las vegas mayor
