for multiple days, and we're doing everything we can to respond to those outages and make restoration and repairs. >> days after p-g-and-e's experienced the most damaging storm in the utility's history, crews are still working to restore power to more than 26,000 customers. good evening. i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. >> tonight we have abc seven news team coverage. reporter tara campbell is live in the north bay, where many have gone days without electricity. and we're also still monitoring scattered showers in parts of the east bay. >> abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian starts us off with more on that. spencer >> okay, dan, it's been quite a rainy day for some parts of the bay area. as you pointed out, the east bay has more recently been getting some downpours, but things are tapering off a little bit. here's a look at live doppler seven right now. and you can see that we've got just lightrillionain for most of the bay area. and a few showers down on the peninsula right now. some of the heaviest activity right now is just moving. where is that's right around palo alto and los altos hills right now.
5:02 pm
and of course the santa cruz mountains are getting a nice dose of rainfall. here's the looping image. you can see the movement of the system from northwest to southeast. so it's pushing out of the bay area right now, but it won't be completely out of here until later tonight. let's take a look at the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. this is a level one storm through this evening. we expect more periods of scattered showers, maybe a couple of isolated downpours. winds are gusty right now. 15 to 35mph. those gusts will diminish later tonight. and here's the forecast animation starting at 6 p.m. notice the absence of any widespread rainfall. so as we get into the later evening hours, we'll see a few impulses sweeping down from the north to the south. but nothing very significant in terms of rainfall totals. so looking at what what we project as the final totals, generally under 500 of an inch for most of the bay area, but cold air is coming in behind the cold front that accompanies this storm, and we'll see a frost in some parts of the north bay overnight. i'll give you a closer look at that a little bit later. dan and emma. >> all right. thank you spencer.
5:03 pm
we'll check back. p-g-and-e's crews are making progress to get the power back on. here's a look at their outage map. now at last check, about 26,000 customers are still without power across the bay area, but that is down from 38,000 earlier today. >> one of the areas still dealing with the most outages is in the north bay. about 16,000 customers are still without power there. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has been talking with p-g-and-e's and folks who live there and joins us live. tara >> yeah. dan well, it's pretty quiet here right now. but earlier today when we were here getting details from p-g-and-e's, it was one crew after the next leaving the service center, getting out there trying to restore power. >> right up there is where the tree went through my brother's truck. >> residents in west marin county and beyond are still wrestling with the aftermath of sunday's massive storm. >> way up on the hill up there, it uprooted, fell all the way across, almost hit the house and took out his new truck. >> anthony giacomi lives in san geronimo valley, an area still without power.
5:04 pm
>> you end up throwing your food away if you don't have a generator and you should have a generator for heat p-g-and-e's crews out in full force across the north bay, calling it the most damaging single day storm ever. >> on sunday, we experienced a significant storm. in fact, the most powerful storm uh- most damaging storm in p-g-and-e's history in sonoma county. >> some businesses are still closed, trees still blocking roads and more wet, windy conditions as more than 2000 spans of wire that have been damaged that we need to re string uh- 750 poles that have been damaged and need to be replaced. >> uh, and multiple locations of either cross, arm or transform damage that again need to be repaired and replaced. >> and while most people's power has been restored, there are still some tough to reach places. >> in many cases, those are the most challenging and damaged locations with access issues including multiple trees down road access. in some cases, having to hike in or restore by helicopter. >> and p-g-and-e's says for some
5:05 pm
customers, there could still be a bit of a wait. >> we do have estimated times of restoration, uh, tomorrow and friday and even into the weekend in some cases. >> meanwhile, back in west marin , some residents are just grateful they dodged the damage. >> it's been wild. we live up near up with next to the big trees right above us. so we had some a big top of a big fir tree come down, but luckily we were lucky. now as you that package there, there are still plenty of trees down, power lines still being repaired. >> p-g-and-e's wants to remind people, even though most customers do have power back. there is a lot of debris and dangerous situations out there still, so if you're driving, walking there, just asking people to still be very aware. omar >> all right. tara campbell reporting live. thank you so much. a san jose school is wrapping up a third straight day without electricity. an outage caused by sunday's storms. many students showed up for class today at baldwin elementary with flashlights and some extra
5:06 pm
layers of clothing. they've been told to dress warmly because the school's hvac system isn't fully supported by generators. there's only light in the school's common areas, including the kitchen, so lunch still can be provided. >> i think it shows the kids that no matter what, they have to pay in school. that's responsibility number one, right ? and it shows the kids also that no matter what life goes. on >> the district told parents the cause of the outage is an equipment issue that p-g-and-e's is working to repair. p-g-and-e's expects restoration work to be finished tonight. if not, they will provide temporary generators tomorrow to get the lights back on for those students. >> all right. we'll move on now to other issues making news tonight. san jose police have busted a major retail theft ring office hours say two men they've arrested are responsible for more than 70 thefts in the last six months. one of the men was arrested in december after police say he stole merchandise from a nike store at westgate mall in san jose. police shared these photos. they say his accomplice was arrested by

sunnyvale police in a separate incident. detectives say the two were part of a highly organized theft ring. obviously it's premeditated. >> they go in coordinated. they had a vehicle waiting for them. they go in. they already know what merchandise they're going to grab. obviously things that cost more money. and so it's not like some random person going into a store and suddenly deciding they're going to leave without paying. >> police say the two stole from a number of other stores, including target, rei, best buy and dick's sporting goods. they estimate the stolen goods are worth more than $75,000. the three suspects accused of robbing the apple store on fourth street in berkeley are in custody. >> this afternoon, police say officers followed the suspects. two males and a female from the store into san francisco. then back across the bay to oakland, where they were arrested. officers aren't releasing the ages of the suspects they allegedly stole between 40 and 50 iphones from the store, which has been hit multiple times in recent months. >> new developments out of oakland, where the former police chief is continuing to fight his

lower drug costs, and bring good jobs back home. the choice is clear. i'm adam schiff, and i approve this message. director larry biel is there and joins us live with the very latest. hi, larry. hi dan. >> hi, amma. we have come full circle on monday. the big story was the 40 niners unhappy with the quality of the practice field that they were assigned at unlv by nfl commissioner roger goodell responded to that by saying the league had 23 experts
5:14 pm
who all deemed that the field was indeed playable. but now today, the nfl players association has weighed in, and they're saying that that field is, quote, not up to snuff. a few minutes ago, kyle shanahan, with reaction. now we had a normal practice. >> and you we didn't practice there the rest of the week. oh yeah. >> we're not going to change our whole schedule up. we'd have to go to early in the morning, mess everything up. so this is the best choice we got. are you satisfied with that choice? um we're here. we're practicing on it. i mean, everyone has their preferences and wish things were better, but we'll deal with the field how it is. >> you can tell he's clearly irritated. and this is something that you should not have to deal with at the super bowl. uh, brock purdy, he's gone from the last pick in the draft to third string niners quarterback to the all time leading passer in 40 niners history. boy, that was quick. if purdy leads the 40 niners to a victory over the chiefs on sunday in super bowl 58, it will be a truly life changing experience. and as the

kids would say, he's here for it . >> earlier this year, you know, there's not a lot of talk or buzz really about i guess, myself. and not that i listen to it and buy into all of it, but it's almost like i still have to go and play with that chip on my shoulder and prove to my teammates that, you know, i can be the guy for this team. i feel like i had some stuff to prove. still, obviously last year i played seven, eight games or whatever that was and it was all good. but it wasn't a whole season. so there was a lot of questions. and so i still got to go out there and prove to myself, you know, i can do this. and to my team that i can be the guy. so, yeah, there wasn't a big, you know, spotlight on me or anything like that. so like, you sort of want to make a name for yourself kind of thing, you know, throughout the year and early on. so i feel like it has been sort of an advantage for sure. >> a lot of pressure on that young man. we'll see how he does against patrick mahomes. one funny note about brock. apparently he does impersonations and he will sometimes bust them out in the huddle just to break the
5:16 pm
tension. i heard him do spongebob the other day. he was spot on. really so patrick mahomes take that live in las vegas. larry biel, abc seven sports. back to you. that's a fun fact. >> all right, larry, thanks so much. >> and do you stay with abc seven all week as we bring you live team coverage from las vegas. in addition to larry, we have live reports from chris alvarez, j.r. stone aach fuentes throughout the week. but i'm peter dixon and in kenya...

is writing and was involved in an accident. abc seven news reporter luz pena has the story. a couple minutes into his waymo ride, robert moreno said the cool feeling of getting an invitation to ride on a driverless vehicle quickly shifted. >> and some some panic set in. >> um, just owing to the situation itself. >> on saturday, robert and his husband said a person who looked homeless was trying to cover the sensors of the vehicle. as the light turned green. >> we felt trapped in the sense that we didn't know what to do in that instance. we didn't really have an understanding. do we get out? was it safe to get out of the car? >> were you concerned for your safety? >> we were, because of the situation. >> the vehicle didn't move and minutes later that person walked away. waymo emailed him, saying in part, when a pedestrian attacks the vehicle, we advise riders to remain inside the
5:20 pm
vehicle. we looked into the potential of someone getting inside the vehicle. now, when a waymo is active, the door handles are hidden as you can see, no one can get inside the vehicle from the outside. the only way to get in the vehicle is to click on lock. that's when the handles pop out. so scott mora, uc berkeley's faculty director for the program for advance transportation technology, or path, explained why. the waymo vehicle responded the way it did when those sensors are blocked, it's equivalent to basically someone putting a blindfold over the eyes of a driver and they're unable to move the sensors and visibility are key. on tuesday in the potrero hill neighborhood, a cyclist was hit by one of these vehicles. in a statement, waymo said in part the cyclist was occluded by the truck and quickly followed behind it, crossing into the waymo vehicles path when they became fully visible, our vehicle applied heavy braking
5:21 pm
but was not able to avoid the collision. >> we're really relieved that it seems that the person's injuries were minor, but they very easily could have been much worse. the risk that we saw from waymo seeks to put the cause of the crash onto the person who was biking. we studied the safety of avs and it's not there yet. it's not human level safe. >> robert. he blames the challenges of the city, not waymo. >> an experience like this. um, it is a teaching moment in san francisco. >> luz pena abc seven news. something to think about. >> all right. let's get a check on our weather. we've been talking a lot about those cold temperatures. >> yeah, these are photos from the lick observatory atop mount hamilton in the south bay. you can see that light dusting of snow. yeah. >> for the details, let's get to abc seven news. weather anchor spencer christian. hi, spencer and dan. >> i almost said i'm on spencer. i'm talking to myself. i'm talking to you. here's a look at live doppler seven, and you can
