k you, thank you, thank you. ♪ ♪ oh my gosh. >> my doc is in danger. i don't know what to do. >> all right. this is not your average sailing vessel. it's actually an entire dock floating down the delta in the inland east bay, smashing into things downstream and doing thousands of dollars in damage. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm dan ashley, and i'm ama daetz. >> this is all happening on and around bethel island in the delta of eastern contra costa

county. the 300 foot dock was dislodged sunday, and days later neighbors aren't sure what to do with it. abc seven news reporter tim johns has more on this crash course along the docks. >> that one's going into the dock right there. >> it's going to hit residents along the taylor slough side of bethel island are still waiting for cleanup after a massive 300 foot dock came crashing onto their properties, the dock broke away from a nearby privately owned marina on sunday as a powerful storm battered the bay area. >> the dock split into multiple large pieces, which then floated down the river. >> they destroyed a dock and did damage to a bunch of other docks . >> fred kozlowski lives there and films the whole thing. he says. the broken dock pieces ended up on a nearby island that was until wednesday, when another round of stormy weather and strong tides pulled some of the pieces back towards bethel island, this time hitting part of kozlowski's own dock as well as some of his neighbors.

>> it was crazy. it first thing i thought was calling 911, kozlowski says. >> while he doesn't know how much damage wednesday's crash is done to his property, he estimates it could be anywhere from 30 to $50,000. >> all our neighbors got together, gathered ropes and tied it up so that it's not going to go down and do any more damage. >> prior to this week's incident, the marina dock had caused concern for years. contra costa county supervisor diane burgess, who represents this area, says the docks owner failed to keep up the property, resulting in unsafe conditions. it got so bad that contra costa officials interval in last summer to clean things up, despite it not normally falling under the county's responsibilities. now now, burgess says they're working to fix the current mess. >> this is a large piece, you know, a lot of debris and so it's not something you can just turn around and, you know, just pick up. >> while a contractor has been hired to remove the runaway dock, there's currently no timeline of when that might be finished. kozlowski says he just

hopes it's as soon as possible. >> all the anxiety level has been off the hook. i mean, just seeing this, this thing is huge in east contra costa county. >> tim johns, abc seven news happening now. >> a street is blocked off in san francisco because of this gaping sinkhole. this is on 14th street between guerrero and valencia, right where the whole foods is now. we're told one car actually drove into it earlier today and got two flat tires. the entire block is closed to cars until crews can fix it. the exact cause still hasn't been determined. >> well, tonight the north and south bay seem to have the largest areas of pg and e customers still sitting in the dark. it's now night for the of no power caused by the storm that pg and e today said was unprecedented. this storm was the largest, most damaging storm in p-g-and-e's history. >> uh- we saw winds in excess of 90 and in one case, 100 miles an hour. that storm resulted in

significant damage, primarily from uprooted trees and other debris impacting more than 1.4 million customers. our men and women are doing everything they can to restore power as quickly as they safely can. >> pg and e says it is devoting as many crews as possible working around the clock to get the power turned back on for everyone. >> all right, so let's check in with abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian, because we may finally be in the clear for a bit, which would be fantastic. >> we need it. he's looking ahead in our 24 hour accuweather forecast. spencer. okay, dan and i'm of the clear is coming our way. >> here's a look at live doppler seven. the looping image. you can see the little storm we had earlier is now moving out of the bay area, and the clearing will begin tonight. so here's a look at your 24 hour planner for tomorrow. in the early morning hours, 7:00. it will be mainly clear a few lingering clouds, temperatures ranging from low 40s on the coast to low 40s around the bay to 30s inland, where it's going to be pretty cold by noon. still a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures, mainly in the low to mid 50s.

just about everywhere across the board from inland to the to the bay to the coast. similar range of highs of temperatures, i should say at 4 p.m, although a little bit cloudier at 4 p.m. there may be an isolated shower or two late in the day and going into the evening hours, skies start to clear out again, leading us into a string of sunny days, which i'll tell you about a little bit later. dan all right, spencer, thank you so much. >> right now, animal experts say there's a disturbing side effect from these extreme storms. many birds along our coast are being battered and forced from the sea by the strong winds. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez shows us how local animal groups are jumping into action. >> right now, the spca for monterey county is acting like an emergency hospital for seabirds. >> these birds are coming into us hypothermic, emaciated and in desperate need of care. >> spca staff say they're rescuing dozens of seabirds getting pushed from the ocean and onto the shore due to recent winter storms. >> with the rough seas and the

high winds and all the rain. if they lose their waterproofing at all, they can crash really fast. >> water proofing feathers on seabirds help keep them warm and buoyant. seabirds can lose their waterproofing if they get any oil on them during the mostrillionecent storms, nats oil seepage is getting churned up in the ocean and getting on these seabirds. >> so what we're asking the public to do is if they see a seabird on on the beach to please, if you can very safely with a towel or a blanket, um, gather it up, put it in a box that they can breathe in but not escape from staff at native animal rescue of santa cruz county are also receiving calls to help these birds made for swimming, not land. >> their legs actually don't work. um, so they're not able to walk like a normal bird would. their their legs are set very, very far back on their body. so those birds need to be rescued immediately before dogs get to them. >> this long time wildlife

technician said. as storms get more severe, they are seeing more casualties. >> never hesitate to call. no question is to simple uh, we're here every single day. uh, wildlife does not take holidays or weekends, so neither do we. so we will always be here for your calls this friday, the seabirds currently receiving care in monterey and santa cruz will be transported to the international bird rescue in fairfield. >> once they're well, they'll be released back into the wild in the south bay. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> happening tomorrow, investigators are expected to discuss a couple of unsolved bay area murders that date back to the 1970s. >> one of those cases is a sexual assault and murder of nellie hicks. her body was found inside a home in newark in may of 1972. the other case, the 1979 killing of teresa pica of hayward. >> the fbi is now involved in both investigates options. >> new developments. former oakland police chief leronne armstrong is suing the city of oakland and mayor shengtao over his firing last year.

armstrong's attorney claims the decision by mayor tao violated labor law and armstrong's first amendment rights. an independent auditor cleared armstrong of any wrongdoing. in september, mayor tao declined to comment today on the pending litigation. however, she did comment on the governor's order to send 120 more california highway patrol officers into the east bay. a large majority in oakland to cut down on retail crime. >> having the help of chp is going to actually create a safer oakland for all communities across the spectrum. you know, this is not, you know, pulling people over for no probable cause. this is hyper focus on those criminals, the gangs and groups under our ceasefire strategy to ensure that we are taking this small group of people off of our streets. >> mayor tao turned down the three finalists for a police chief replacement. the names of three more candidates are due to her by the oakland police commission in early march. >> all right, let's turn to sunday. the festivities in las vegas ramping up as we get closer to the super bowl.

>> yeah, this is live. look at allegiant stadium, where the 40 niners will face the kansas city chiefs on sunday. >> and tonight, folks from across the nfl came together to send a message of advocacy and allyship. >> yes, it was at a third, and it was at a third year. lgbtq pride event. abc seven news reporter jared stone was there and kicks off our team coverage tonight. >> a night of pride with glad and the nfl and keep in mind, this is only the third year that this event has actually happened. so huge strides being made in this community. not a red carpet event, but you can see the purple carpet here. symbol of the support for the lgbtq youth with the stand against bullying and the lgbtq community. lance bass of nsync hosted the event. he came out as gay in 2006. we spoke with former nfl players, cheerleaders and organizers about coming out and acceptance in doing so. >> never in a million years when

i thought this would be a thing right? um, but the fact that queer folks have a space to feel seen and heard, it's so powerful. it's such a moment. >> it's hard. i think everyone has different factors that they they bring to the equation, whether it be, you know, where you were born, whether it be the views of your family, of your colleagues, of your communities in sport, historically, especially, football has not been the most welcoming place. i think there's 16 players in nfl history that have come out. i think events like these, i think moments like these with the nfl and glad make it easier for next generation. >> it was very hard to be the first guy to be in a same sex marriage as an ex nfl players, especially being a dallas cowboy. you think it's going to be harder than it is, and then you learn that it's really not. and people are more accepting than you think. life is better when you're being yourself and people love you more when you're yourself. >> i think the message here was clear the lgbt community has come a long way, but still has challenges ahead. the fact that the nfl is on board now, such a big deal. for those i spoke with in las vegas, j.r. stone, abc

things have calmed down. it's getting chilly, though. temperatures in the upper 40s at san francisco, oakland, hayward, san jose, san mateo, 50 degrees at half moon bay, other temperature readings, even chilly, are down to 36 right now at petaluma, 42 at santa rosa, mid 40s at napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. we have a frost advisory in effect for the interior. north bay valleys until 9 a.m. frost will form in numerous locations. temperatures may drop as low tonight as 33 degrees. looking at our lows across the entire region, lots of inland locations will see lows tonight dropping into the mid to upper 30s and some locations in the lower 30s right around the bay shoreline and on the coast. lows will be mainly in the low 40s and tomorrow we'll have certainly some periods of sunshine, but a few clouds may gather in the late afternoon and there's a chance of a couple of isolated showers. but essentially it's going to be a dry day tomorrow with high temperatures mainly in the mid 50s. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. it starts to get even sunnier on friday going
