>> good friday morning, everyone . >> i'm rhiannon ally, and i'm lionel moise. in for andrew. we begin with president biden firing back against accused asians that his memory is so poor that he failed to remember when his son died. >> the accusations came to light in a special counsel report on biden's handling of classified documents. >> and last night, in a hastily announced news conference, biden got emotional addressing those claims about his memory and his record keeping everybody. president biden last night angrily defended his ability to do his job after a special counsel investigating his handling of classified documents described his memory as hazy, fuzzy, faulty and having significant limitations. >> my memory is not my memory is fine. >> the concerns about biden's memory intensified after the release of special counsel robert hur's report, which found biden did hold on to classified materials after his time as vice president. some of it top secret. but her added the evidence does not establish mr.

colorado court argued trump violated the 14th amendment, which prevents people who engaged in insurrection from holding office. but during three hours of arguments yesterday, the supreme court justices were highly skeptical of colorado's decision. >> i think that the question that you have to confront is why a single state should decide who gets to be president of the united states. >> this doesn't seem like a state call. >> i would expect that, you know, a goodly number of states will say, whoever the democratic candidate is, you're off the ballot. and others, uh, for the republican candidate, you're off the ballot and it will come down to just a handful of states that are going to decide the presidential election that trump's team argues the terme officer of the united states in the 14th amendment applies to an appointed official, not the president. >> a ruling from the supreme court is expected within weeks. lionel ike, thank you for that update. >> a major shakeup in the war in ukraine. president zelenskyy has

fired his top military commander. he has replaced the officer who led ukrainian forces since russia's invasion nearly two years ago. zelensky's office says ukraine is facing a severe ammunition shortage, with u.s. funding for the war still hung up in congress. meanwhile, vladimir putin is calling for the u.s. to help negotiate a potential end to the war. pelley in northern california, have arrested a man they say stole this. >> a small plane from an airport near stamford university. they say he made an emergency landing on a beach about 30 miles away. that is where they took him into custody. there is no word on a motive. >> now to ohio, where a student is being hailed a hero for helping stop a mass shooting at his school. his dad says despite threats on his son's life, his son did the right thing. here's abc's andrea fujii this morning. >> a 15 year old is credited with helping thwart a school shooting allegedly plotted by his classmate. at this high school in ohio that was more important than his life was protecting his classmates and i

could not be more proud of him. >> and i mean, he's a hero for what he did. >> zach swallen says his son, boom, wasted no time earlier this week telling him that his classmate had revealed a plan to shoot people at mariemont high school. >> the swift action was definitely warranted, and i'm grateful that my son reached out, investigators say that classmate allegedly planned to kill eight students and a teacher. >> it was an obvious, um, threat. there was no doubt that this was going to occur. >> authorities say text messages reveal the would be shooter was conspiring with an adult who was out of state. the teen suspect allegedly texting, i need them dead. really soon. the adult allegedly responding, i got you, bro. police say the teen responded, can you do tomorrow? swallen says his son saw the teen's plan on paper and told him tuesday. the next day, the teen was arrested and is now accused of conspiracy to commit aggravated murder. swallen says the suspect had threatened boom if he told anyone about the plan, but that didn't stop boom

2020 tonight on abc. >> we are back with a new effort to ban laundry detergent ponds. new york city's council is considering a bill that would make the pods illegal. supporters of the ban claim the plastic used in the pods can pollute waterways, but procter and gamble, maker of tide pods, disputes that, saying federal regulators disagree. >> the high cost of prescription drugs is an issue that is front and center for so many families.

and on capitol hill there was a showdown between drug company executives and lawmakers. here's abc's reena roy pharmacy ceos in the hot seat thursday, testifying before senators about high prescription drug costs in the u.s, even though the price of keytruda is one quarter of the price in japan. >> does merck make a profit selling keytruda in japan? >> we do. >> the heads of johnson and johnson, merck and bristol-myers squibb getting grilled about why costs are so high, citing research and development while defending the billions paid in dividends to stockholders. >> our priority is investing in r&d. we have spent $77 billion since 2016. and yes, we have to pay dividends because it is the only way that the company can remain operational and sustainable. >> the senate health education, labor and pensions committee, chaired by senator bernie sanders, hoping to lower costs for americans as we pay by far

the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. >> ten of the top pharmacy companies in america made over $110 billion in profits in 2022. they are doing phenomenally well while americans cannot afford the cost of the medicine they need, the committee says. >> johnson and johnson charges americans with psoriatic arthritis is $79,000 for stelara, while the same product is about 16,000. in the u.k. similarly saying merck charges diabetes patients $6,900 for januvia when that same product can be purchased for $900. in canada and $200 in france. that unfortunately, comes at a fairly significant cost for those patients outside of the us and canada. >> patients will wait roughly three and a half to four years to get an access to a medicine that is available in the us. >> some senators also criticizing congress for failing

york times that he choked her, threw her around and threatened to kill her and a woman he dated for two years claims he emotionally abused her. the times reports majors is also accused of volatile behavior on the set of lovecraft country. majors lawyer denies the allegations of physical abuse. >> we turn now to the increasing presence of dollar stores all across the country. they are known for deep discounts, but critics say there's a downside and they want to limit their growth. this morning, chicago is the latest city taking steps to rein in dollar stores. critics claim the stores can be a danger to communities. >> their stores are filthy. they don't keep the trash up in front of the communities. >> the proposal up for a vote next week, would ban dollar stores owned by the same company from opening within one mile of each other. dozens of smaller cities and towns in the u.s. have already taken similar steps. the small box retailers have been under fire, accused of

violating health and building codes. stores in chicago have racked up more than $600,000 in fines since 2017. for everything from overcharging customers and selling tobacco to minors to selling expired infant formula and medicine. safety also a concern, literally. >> my daughter was asked by her manager to bring her carry and conceal because he did not feel safe. >> in response, dollar tree says it has spent $1.5 million upgrading and repairing stores and boosting staffing levels. it says the chicago proposal will limit one of the few low cost, high value options for essential household goods and forced residents to travel further and likely pay higher prices. but some critics argue. dollar stores drive out grocery chains, leaving access only to less healthy, processed and canned foods. the chicago proposal would exempt stores from the new
