the police response and we are live in las vegas where super bowl 58 is now just one day away. and fans are rubbing elbows with 40 niners legends. also, the lunar new year gets off to a colorful start here in
4:31 pm
the bay area. abc seven news starts right now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> a frightening look at the incident that sent students running for safety on the uc berkeley campus last night. a gunman opening fire as he walks outside of the student union. investigators are now revealing new details about the moments leading up to the incident and the person arrested. hi everybody. thanks for joining us for this special 430 edition of abc seven news. i'm dionne lim. fortunately, no one was hurt by last night's gunfire, but students are questioning how the school notified them of the potential danger. abc seven news reporter ryan curry was on campus today and has more on the moments leading up to the shooting, as well as response from students.
4:32 pm
air. >> new video shows what happened on the uc berkeley campus friday night. a man gets into a fight with several people near sproul plaza shortly after the fight, he pulls out a gun and starts shooting. students quickly ran to safety. >> we happen to notice a bunch of cops drive by where we were so we came to check it out and we were standing by the student union and somebody was getting pinned to the floor and then carried to the car. i was a little bit shocked that this all happened, like in the student building. >> no one was hurt in campus. police arrested him several minutes after the shooting, but students say they didn't know there was a shooting until well after it had happened. >> so this one says there's police activity in lower sproul plaza. this was like about 30 minutes after it happened. >> santiago hopkins says he heard from friends instead of the uc berkeley alert system. >> he was kind of egregious considering like, you know, even the email said there's police activity involved and say there's like a shooter or something. um, i heard about it through like a slack through my
4:33 pm
club. >> other students didn't get the alert until several hours later. >> the alert system went off and around like, i think like 10 or 11, even though i heard the shooting happened at around 840, you can see the window shot out in the second floor of the student union. >> plenty of students walked through here. it's right by the center of campus. uc berkeley says they're looking into why the alert system was delayed. but the students we spoke with, they say they want to improved. >> this has to be better. i think. yeah, it's pretty simple. >> police are notrillioneleasing, the name of the man, but says he is 59 years old and not affiliated with the school. they say he faces several weapons charges. students on campus are on edge. the day after. >> i mean, i come here every day, so, like, i could have. i could have been here when the shooting happened. and thankfully, i wasn't in berkeley. >> ryan curry, abc seven news. >> a deadly stabbing overnight at a popular park in pleasant hill. police say the victim was a city employee in. investigators identified him as 37 year old santiago jacobo from
4:34 pm
pittsburgh. they say he was a member of the park's janitorial staff, and his body was found by his wife. >> uh, unfortunately, uh, santiago's wife is the person that discovered him. this morning. um, she became concerned when he hadn't returned home after his shift. uh, working at the park last night. so she drove to the park upon arriving, she found him in the parking lot and called 911. >> this is pleasant hill's first homicide of the year. anyone with additional information is asked to call police. all right, moving on now to our coverage of the 40 niners quest for a sixth super bowl title. we are counting down less than 24 hours away from kickoff in las vegas, where we are taking a live look in las vegas at allegiant stadium, where home field is for the year's big game. now, a different las vegas arena is getting a lot of oohs and ahs today. how neat is this? the sphere is displaying images of
4:35 pm
the super bowl rings of all 57 previous winners. this is the 40 niners ring from their win in the super bowl 16 back in 1982. it is part of a town wide festivity surrounding the super bowl, now speaking of, we have team coverage of super bowl eve from las vegas. so let's begin now with abc seven news sports anchor chris alvarez. he is at the fan experience and chris, what is your favorite station there. >> uh- dion, i'm glad you asked. there are so many great stations here for football fans and my favorite personally was the passing accuracy. so you test your arm and accuracy. and so larry and i had a little bit of fun with that. but this is so funny because we're out here near some other agility drills and a fan came up. two fans came up to him. photographer abe mendoza and i, and said, what drill is this? what station is this? this is the tv anchor experience. we look so official, like we're part of the whole nfl experience here. and so we have the helmet, we have the hat uh- we have not had anybody try to
4:36 pm
be the anchor for a day. it's only because i want to keep my job for at least another night. so i can cover the super bowl. so a lot of fans here are having fun and also, one thing to point out, that helmet is actually too small for my big head. i tried to try it on earlier and i was going to wear it uh. apparently i have a big head. >> oh hey, that means you have a big brain, chris. that's what people told me growing up to so much fun. >> that's a way to put it. >> all right, chris, many thanks to you. we'll get another check shortly later on as the evening progresses. now, as niners fans continue to arrive in las vegas, some are already partying. those parties in full swing already. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone continues our coverage from allegiant stadium. j.r, this is not work. >> uh. well well, i could go off on that, diane, but can you believe it? i mean, it almost feels unreal that the super bowl is actually tomorrow and things are heating up early this week we saw a number of kansas city fans all over the place, and they're still here. but in the
4:37 pm
last 24 hours, it almost feels like california said, okay, the work week is over. let's get to las vegas for this super bowl. and the line of 40 niner faithful outside of the hard rock cafe in las vegas went on and on and on. oh man, it just kept going. no other fans in the world is like the niners fan because we do it big and we are faithful and we go all over the place. heck, even the chair guy showed up to saturday's 40 niners tailgate party. you come all the way from san francisco driving this on the highway. >> oh, i wish hey, some of his fans will go to the super bowl. >> most though are here for the camaraderie among fellow faithful and a super bowl viewing party. we're going to go to eye candy. >> it's at mandalay bay, and we're thinking, that's as close as you probably can get to allegiant. so when we win, we can run out the doors, be on the street and start screaming niners! >> and while some of these parties may be the cheaper
4:38 pm
option to the actual super bowl, i don't know if you can consider them cheap. some of the cheaper ones are about 99 bucks and some of the other ones are up to 2000 3000 bucks. but to these fans, being in vegas on this super bowl weekend is a must. i mean, at this party, a certain famous quarterback made an appearance. joe montana dude, hello. >> i just love joe montana, but i'm standing here hopefully waiting and i'm going to cry if i don't meet him. >> the goal is joe montana. yes, baby. >> yes, it's one of the reasons they came dressed in just about anything you can imagine. >> all to show off just how faithful they are. >> we came all the way from san jose, so we left about one in the morning. drove? yeah yeah. >> so you've been you've been up since one. oh, yeah. >> i know i'm a little tired, but yeah, it's all right. all these adrenaline right here with everybody. will you be drinking iced tea? >> would we be down in shots? >> you know, iced tea, maybe with a little bit of something
4:39 pm
extra? we we kind of pre partied before we came. okay. kind of thing you know. oh so you're feeling good already. oh yeah. no, we're here for it. >> yeah. they were certainly feeling good when we spoke with them earlier this afternoon. now the sun is about to set here in las vegas. but tonight is typically the big party night during a super bowl week. all sorts of red carpet events. diane, i know you were hinting at it all of the fun here. tonight is the night for fun in las vegas. for a lot of people. but again, the focus is tomorrow at that super bowl reporting live in las vegas j.r stone abc seven news now j.r. >> you also follow the 40 niners. the last time they made it to the super bowl. can you tell me what the vibe is in comparison. because it seems like everyone is way more amped up and they think they're going to really win this one. i well, they're pretty amped up. >> i think the last couple of super bowls as well that i covered. but i will say uh, i think what's what's special here is, is just the number of 40
4:40 pm
niners fans who are here. i mean, we've seen other games in miami, we've seen other games in new orleans. and i think it's harder for people from california to travel across the country. it's way more expensive. but here we're in las vegas. that's on our side of the country, and they have shown up and the faithful have shown up to cheer on their team. so there's a certain energy here in las vegas. dion definitely can feel it. >> definitely could hear it in that last story as well. good stuff out there. yes j.r. live in vegas for us now talking about sports. we have basketball today and football tomorrow at chase center in san francisco. this is where the 40 niners will host their official super bowl watch party. the venue opens at two for kickoff at 330. it will be a family friendly event. the party itself is free, but space is limited and it is a first come, first serve basis type of event. you are encouraged to rsvp though, through eventbrite to secure access. now we have compiled all of our stories on the 40 niners run to the super
