>> the line of 40 niners faithful outside of the hard rock cafe in las vegas went on and on and on. oh, man. it just kept going. no other fans in the world is like the niners fan because we do it big and we are faithful and we go all over the place. heck, even the chair guy showed up to saturday's 40 niners tailgate party. you come all the way from san francisco driving this on the highway. >> oh, i wish i some of his fans will go to the super bowl. >> most though are here for the camaraderie among fellow faithful and a super bowl viewing party. we're going to go to eye candy. >> it's at mandalay bay, and we're thinking, that's as close as you probably can get to allegiant. so when we win, we can run out the doors, be on the street and start screaming niners! >> and while some of the parties may be the cheaper option to the actual super bowl, i don't know if you can consider them cheap. some of the cheaper ones are about 99 bucks and some of the other ones are up to 2000 3000 bucks. >> but to these fans, being in

with faithful from all across the country and my guess maybe even a bet is that they'll be starting their parties early on super bowl sunday as well. in las vegas. j.r. stone abc seven news. >> our guest probably right. all right. well, basketball today and football tomorrow. thrive city in front of chase center in san francisco will be transformed overnight into the venue for an official 40 niners watch party. the venue opens at 2 p.m. for the 330 kickoff. it will be first come, first served. organizers are asking folks to secure availability by rsvp through eventbrite. they say the watch party will be a family friendly affair. well sunday in san francisco, there will be traffic closures in parts of the mission district and freeway off ramps will be closed, similar to what happened during the nfc championship game . some muni busses will also be rerouted in some areas. well, you just can't miss the 40 niners colors tonight in san francisco. numerous landmarks are glowing in red and gold. and

then there are the preparations for all of the watch parties in the bay area. we begin our continuing coverage in the east bay with abc seven news reporter anser hassan. >> when the 40 niners beat the lions in the nfc championship game, retro junkies sports bar in walnut creek was packed. a co-owner, enrique montero, feels sunday will be different. there is something different. >> i mean, after finally winning the championship game after three years and getting through, it's time to get some payback on the chiefs. that payback will be televised at their huge super bowl party. >> the big beer garden has been prepped with a 15 foot led screen, tents, surround sound and food. >> we got food trucks, uh, barbecue, of course. um, we got all sorts of games, raffles, squares, stuff like that. we got a deejays before, uh, during commercial breaks and after the game. hopefully we're celebrating my family, uh, big niner fans. >> grandfather sold. you know, seat cushions and programs at kaiser. um, so it's in my blood.

>> mark trapani will keep the family tradition alive at rotator taproom bar, also in walnut creek. he says they're loyal. 40 niner fan base will pack the place. six tvs, food trucks. and of course, there will be games as cameras pass by. >> taylor swift. everyone has got a dream. despite being raider territory, downtown oakland will be another hotspot for the 40 niners gang at fillmore social. >> nina joyner will be serving up a special super bowl cocktail and a viewing party. she's a vegas native and a raiders fan, so she has mixed feelings. >> the reason why i came out to the bay area is because of all the sports teams. it's bittersweet for me, but i'm really happy for city of san francisco. this is really good for them, and i also think it's good for oakland because you know, a lot of people are going to be watching saturday night, san francisco landmarks were lit up in red and gold, but that sense that a 40 niners super bowl win isn't just about san francisco. >> it's something that seems to resonate across the bay area. >> san francisco and the bay area needs this win. you know,

with everything going on in san francisco being kind of drug through with with all that kind of political stuff, i just think that this is something that we could be proud of with the whole world at the bay area and especially san francisco, bringing this home, as they say. >> do it for the bay in the east bay. anser hassan abc seven news. all right, once again, let's get back to las vegas, where abc seven news sports anchor chris alvarez joins us live. >> and chris, by this time tomorrow night, can you believe it? we're going to be talking about a super bowl champion in deion. >> it's crazy and hard to believe because you've been here. at least i've been here almost now a week. and that's a lot of time in las vegas as we well know. and i've been able to stay away from the slot machines. but you know what's been interesting about a whole week is you get ready, you got i got here on sunday quiet, quiet, quiet. wednesday, thursday things start picking up. and then today just to get over to our live shot in the mandalay bay, we're a different hotel. it took about 25 30 minutes to play. it felt like it was playing human frogger out there, just trying to get through with

demand right now at our website or like we just mentioned, the abc seven bay area app. new at 11. today's lunar new year celebration took a dangerous and destructive turn in san francisco's chinatown. tonight, a waymo car was graffitied and set on fire by a mob of people on jackson street near grant avenue at about 9:00, waymo tells us nobody was inside the vehicle at the time, and the fire started after a window was broken and a firework thrown inside. firefighters quickly extinguished those flames. the car is a total loss. as you can see, police are now investigating all also new at 11. we're hearing from the grateful mother of a 12 year old boy who was rescued after getting stuck on a cliff at fort funston in san francisco this afternoon. 12 year old adam told us he thought he could make it back up the hill on his own. after descending 150ft toward the beach, the towering cliff side, though, was just too much for him. bystanders called 911, and the highway patrol helicopter showed up for the rescue. mom terry says this was a teachable moment. >> i felt like i was going to be

okay. >> we had some great people on the beach that helped out and called 911, and a great rescue team that helped him, and i think he learned a lesson. >> mother and son are both relieved and thankful for the chp along with san francisco firefighters and those witnesses, the fire department says the cliffs are fort funston at fort funston are dangerous and remind everyone to stay away from them in the east bay. a deadly stabbing overnight at a popular park in pleasant hill. police say the victim was a city employee. investigators identified him as 37 year old santiago jacobo from pittsburgh. they say he was a member of the park's janitorial staff, and his body was found by his wife. >> uh, unfortunately, uh, santiago's wife is the person that discovered him this morning . um, she became concerned when he hadn't returned home after his shift. uh, working at the park last night. so she drove to the park. upon arriving, she

found him in the parking lot and called 911. this is pleasant hill's first homicide of the year. >> anyway, one with information is asked to call police. students at uc berkeley are raising questions tonight over safety notification system. after there was a shooting on campus last night. itll happened in the area of sproul plaza and the mlk student union ne thentersection of bancroft way and college avenue. abc seven news reporter ryan rry was on campus today and has more on the moments leading up to the shooting, as well as the response from students. firing into the air. >> new video shows what happened on the uc berkeley campus friday night. a man gets into a fight with several people near sproul plaza. shortly after the fight, he pulls out a gun and starts shooting. students quickly ran to safety. we happen to notice a bunch of cops drive by where we were, so we came to check it out and we were standing by the student union and somebody was

getting pinned to the floor and then carried to the car. >> i was a little bit shocked that this all happened, like in the student building. >> no one was hurt in campus. police arrested him several minutes after the shooting, but students say they didn't know there was a shooting until well after it had happened. >> so this one says there's police activity in lower sproul plaza. this is like about 30 minutes after it happened. >> santiago hopkins says he heard from friends instead of the uc berkeley alert system. he was kind of egregious considering like, you know, even the email said there's police activity involved and say there's like a shooter or something. >> um, i heard about it through, uh, like a slack through my club. >> other students didn't get the alert until several hours later. >> the alert system went off and around like, i think like 10 or 11, even though i heard the shooting happened at around 840, you can see the window shot out in the second floor of the student union. >> plenty of students walked through here. it's right by the center of campus. uc berkeley says they're looking into why

event today, unveiling a 1906 earthquake and fire memorial plaque. attendees were asked to come out to market street dressed in their best 20th century clothing. the san francisco lesbian, gay freedom band came to play for the occasion. the plaque is six feet tall, placed across from lotta's fountain off kearny street, featuring photos and historic information. all right, all eyes are on the super bowl forecast. >> they are indeed. my eyes have been on the skies all day and into the night. so i've got some pretty good news for you. let's take a look at live doppler seven. right now you can see we've got a ridge of high pressure controlling our weather right now, and it's going to bring us, well, it's already bringing us clear skies for tonight and it'll bring us a string of dry days as we look ahead. so let's take a look at current weather conditions or current. yeah, we're current weather conditions. you could say current wind conditions are calm all across the bay area. we have no wind speeds above ten miles per hour, except right here in san francisco where where we have 16 mile per hour winds moving along a live view

from our rooftop camera, looking along the embarcadero 52 degrees here in the city right now, we have 46 at oakland and upper 40s at hayward, san jose, san mateo at 54 at half moon bay, a quiet night in emeryville, looking up north, 42 degrees right now at santa rosa. chilly 39 at petaluma, low to mid 40s at napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. one more live view from mount tam looking down on the bright lights of san francisco. these are our forecast headlines overnight and early morning. a little chilly with the frost advisory in one region. i'll get to that in just a moment. super bowl sunday in the afternoon. mostly sunny for you who are going to outdoor watch parties. and late next week we can expect a change in our weather pattern as it gets wet once again. so overnight i said it's going to be a little bit chilly and especially down in the santa clara hills where we have a frost advisory in effect until 9:00 tomorrow morning. temperatures will be as low as 32 degrees, so bear in mind that frost can kill uncovered sensitive vegetation. keep that in mind. and as we look at overnight lows in the broader picture, you can see that almost all of our inland

communities will have low temperatures dropping into the upper 30s, mid to upper 30s in some spots. and of course very chilly down in the santa clara hills right around the bay shoreline. lows in the low to mid 40s and on the coast about 40 degrees. highs tomorrow, mainly upper 50s north of the golden gate as we go farther to the east and south, we'll see a few 6062 degree readings for tomorrow and the all important super bowl weather for watch parties around the bay area. from the from the coast to inland areas, we'll see temperatures at 2 p.m. from mid 50s to low 60s in the inland area. then by 5:00 it not a very wide range of temperatures 54 at the coast, upper 50s inland and around the bay. 7 p.m. starts to get a little bit chillier at all locations, but it will be clear and it will be dry. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so we have a few dry days coming our way. going into the middle of next week, and it will get a little bit milder. strangely enough, as it gets cloudier wednesday. valentine's day looking very nice mid 60s. the highs in our inland areas and then it starts to get

a super bowl is a first for sin city, but it's not the big game that's made the vegas name. some say its status is owed to the neon and led signs that are instantly recognizable. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes has been in vegas all week, and has more on who's behind the city's most iconic sign. reporter right now, many of the iconic signs and lights in las vegas are lit purple for super bowl 58, but did you ever think about the team of people who are responsible for creating and maintaining so many of these icons in the city? >> i can tell you, as a vegas native, it didn't really ever cross my mind. but yesterday we got the chance to see how the literal magic is made and actually got to create a little bit of it myself. go ahead and take a look. welcome to fabulous

las vegas. it's one of the most iconic signs in the world. but like anything, sometimes it needs a little maintenance. on this particular day, the neon m in the word welcome needed to be replaced. so it was yours truly to the rescue and i'm scared to death. got my hard hat on the fog here on. so i'm secure in this. um. doesn't mean i'm any less nervous and if you pan the camera over there, there's a lot of people waiting to take a picture, and we're kind of being an obstruction at the moment. but this is all in the name of journalism and telling a very fun, important story. this super bowl week service journeyman kenny west sent me up in the cherry picker, and once i was up, i got straight to work before any of this was able to happen, though, that neon m had to be created. the 103 years. that kind of magic has been created by the incredible team at yesco custom electric signs. think of almost any neon or led sign in the city of las vegas, and yesco is likely behind it. constructing and maintaining the visual icons that make vegas, vegas. >> my grandfather was here in

the late 20s and early 30s, designing, building and installing signs before vegas was really more than just a train stop. >> jascos facilities are not open to the public, but this super bowl week, they gave abc seven cameras a rare look inside, even creating a special sign to welcome us. abc seven in the house from the older neon lights and signs seen throughout places like downtown las vegas to the led lights at dazzle people on the strip. yes, koh's work is behind most all of them. even at allegiant stadium, home of super bowl 58. >> you know, we're keeping those lights lit anyway. but you can imagine the pressure for us is the game has gotten closer and everyone's coming to town. of course, we need to perform and be there for them because the stadium needs to look perfect. the led lighting, like allegiance, is a newer standard. >> there's still a demand in loving interest in classic neon lights, but fewer people and companies are able to create them. if there's anywhere it can be found, though, it's here at yesco. neon journeyman oscar gonzalez has been bending neon

glass for more than 30 years. we found him making that letter m that i was tasked to install at the welcome to fabulous las vegas sign over a stencil, he marks the glass right where he wants to bend it. then he takes it to the fire. >> now what i had to do, i had to heat the glass to get the point where i can bend it. >> after showing me how it's done, i then get a turn. we have our mark here. that mark is in place and this is the area i have to bend. here i go, how do i do it? bend after the glass is made into that m it's now ready to head to the pumping system to fill it with neon gas and other elements. yeah, and after a test with this device, it's finally ready for the installation that yesco bravely put me in charge of a nerve wracking but unforgettable assignment that was the most incredible moment. as a vegas native, i think i've ever spent in the city. never in my life did i think i'd be that high up that close to the welcome to the fabulous las vegas sign. i am just so grateful and appreciative of this man for helping me get up

pay for at checkout stands are supposed to be reusable, up to 125 times, but the reality is, most of us just throw them away after the first use. the bags are thicker and heavier than the ones that were used nearly a decade ago. now in east bay, democratic lawmaker wants to get rid of plastic bags entire. >> maybe this time we are getting rid of those thick plastic bags that you see in grocery stores. you will no longer be getting plastic bags when you shop trees, you will instead have an option between paper bags or the reusable tote bags. >> not going away, though, is the fee stores charge you when you get a bag at checkout stands. we are still on the hook for that. new details now about a 58 foot commercial fishing vessel that washed ashore last night in the north bay, fish and wildlife officials are now concerned about potential pollution from the 1500 gallons of diesel fuel aboard the aleutian storm. the vessel grounded itself on sonoma coast

story. >> while thousands of niner faithful descend on las vegas ahead of sunday's super bowl, their biggest fan may well be sitting in foster city. meet 85 year old carolyn purdy, a resident at the atria senior living facility. and yes, we did ask her about that last name, but she was tight lipped about any possible relation to 40 niners quarterback brock purdy. >> maybe. maybe not. i'm not saying carolyn has been an avid 40 niners fan for over 50 years. >> first getting hooked thanks to her late husband. >> he explained it all to me, and when he would answer all the questions. and then we got the season tickets at good old candlestick. carolyn says she's seen almost every game since 1972. >> that includes being a spectator at the 40 niners 1985 super bowl win for carolyn. cheering on the niners is about more than just watching a sports game. >> forget about everything else. everything. all the stuff that's going on in the you know, you just lose yourself in the game.

talanoa hufanga tore his acl back in mid november. he won't be playing, but i got a chance to talk with him recently. he's in good spirits and can't wait to get back on the field. hey huff, i'm happy to see you man. you look good. you got a big smile on your face, but how are you feeling? how how's rehab going? >> uh, rehab has been good. i'm very blessed just to have the opportunity to be here with the guys continuing to. to get better every day, doing my treatment and stuff like that. but at the end of the day, this week is really important because we just got to get a ring. so how different is it for you not being able to play? >> like how can you help this team this week? >> uh, really honestly, besides just me not being on the field, there's not really no difference. i think it allows me to communicate a little more. allows me to really teach guys, um, be a student of the game and really learn and be a sponge. still, like, i don't think you can ever stop learning. uh, and this is like, one of the most crucial weeks, and it teaches me a lot of, like, how deep and crucial the preparation is. >> from your perspective, what do you see from the chiefs

offense? as you i'm sure you're still watching the film and you're in there. so what makes this team so good on offense? kansas city um, i think they got star players. >> you know, obviously you got a guy like patrick mahomes. uh travis kelce. uh, those are a lead guys. you know first ballot hall of famers right there. uh for me just to really pick up on the tendencies, the differences uh, whether it's run pass keys and stuff like that, you can still learn from these situations of not being, uh, in the game, but you still learn how to prep goes within it. uh, but you know, if we can stop those guys, i think we have a really good chance to win it. >> cannot wait to see huff back on the field next fall. and obviously in training camp. and what a basketball game we saw tonight right here on abc seven. i like what we have going on in our bay area sports weekend. the warriors and the suns. and curry recently named to his 10th all star game. uh steph scored a team high 30 points, including the game winning three with 0.7 seconds to go. what an effort just to catch that pass. a good pass from brandon pisemsky. warriors win their fourth in a row. here's our after the game crew. larry and adorno with more o'donnell. >> we've been saying all season

after the trade deadline everybody gets settled down. you realize you're going to be in this moment for the for the rest of the season. so you have to start paying attention to, you know, you know, what could we do each day to make ourselves better? i think that this is like the starting point for the rest of the season. what are now the warriors make it to the finals? i don't think that is a significant i think is how they start playing, uh, from here in, uh, until the playoffs. and what kind of impact they can potentially, you know, have in the impact. but first you have to get there and you have to play at that level. and i think right now what steve kerr will tell you, that level and that intensity they play with tonight is the start. i don't know if you've ever had a game winning 29 footer. >> i'm sure you've had so many game winning block shots. there's too many to count, right? >> i had a few block shots and i had a i had a tip in one time, but they didn't give it to me. the ref, i call it off. >> injustice. >> the injustice, outrage. >> oh, i can't believe they did you like that? uh, donald, thanks so much. back to chris.
