♪ ♪ ♪ sadness in sin city tonight as the 40 niners are dealt a heartbreaking overtime loss in the super bowl by the kansas city chiefs. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm dionne lim. we do have team coverage for you tonight from las vegas j.r. stone has been catching up with some of the fans. but we begin with sports director larry beil along with chris alvarez. look at your long faces. this one really stings. you guys.

>> yeah that is a mild understated dionne. and it really feels like deja vu. four years ago we stood in miami and the indelible image hulking lineman joe staley trudging back to the locker room, tears streaming down his face after losing to the chiefs because he knew it was his last game and he was going into retirement, and that was it. it was just ending with a super bowl loss tonight. different players. we saw christian mccaffrey. we saw eric armstead. i eyes glazed over in the post game interviews at a loss for words after. again the 49 ers are unable to maintain a ten point lead against patrick mahomes. and the chiefs. >> yeah a lot of guys i saw were in tears as well. dre greenlaw we can mention him later on. he tore his achilles. guys were emotional about that. most about losing you think about all the time. they put in over the last couple of years in the nfc championship twice loss. just got back. chip on the shoulder. felt like everything kind of lined up for them and not to be

tonight. let's go to some of the top moments from this game. brock purdy mr. elliott i say no more. him and his family greeting him. his first ever super bowl start. kyle shanahan looking to get his first super bowl ring as a head coach. and the niners went to the bag of tricks in the second quarter. juwan jennings, a back to christian mccaffrey. the stanford man speeds in and there's your ten point lead larry right in the second quarter. but it eventually went to overtime. and they gave one more chance to patrick mahomes. and there's the ball game with seconds to go to mecole hardman 2522. in overtime the chiefs are back to back champions and just an agonizing loss for brock purdy and company. >> i don't care how you lose when you lose super bowls, especially ones you think you can pull off, it hurts. but, um, i mean, i think i don't know when you when you're in the nfl, i think every team should hurt except for one at the end. we've gone pretty close, but we haven't pulled it off. and we're hurting right now. but that doesn't take away from how proud of our guys i am. um i'm real

proud of them today. to um, that's part of sports. it's part of football. it's part of life. but um, i'm glad we put ourselves out there. and i love our team. and we'll recover and we'll be back here. we'll be back next year. strong mean. >> a lot of guys are quiet and a lot of guys are still quiet right now. um not a lot has been said. um, it just hurts, you know, we have the team, obviously, to do it, to win the whole thing and come up short like that. you know, the way things have been the last couple of years here. um, everyone wanted it so bad. so, um, i think we're still trying to sort of gather, you know, our thoughts and everything right now, but everyone in that locker room loves each other, i'll tell you that. so for the second straight nfl season, we see kansas city as the super bowl champions. >> repeat. it's the first time since tom brady's patriots did it 2003 2004. now mahomes has three titles in five seasons, two of those against the 40 niners. he's kind of building a tom brady s start to his career.

yeah, absolutely. >> and the sting of this loss is going to take a long time to heal. and for kyle shanahan it's legacy lost because kyle is now. oh and three in super bowls two losses with the 40 niners one when he was the offensive coordinator of the falcons. losing to tom brady, tom brady and the patriots. that was super bowl 51. the only other super bowl that ended in overtime. and so just imagine what it's going to be like for kyle shanahan on the flight. back thinking and thinking and thinking about well, people are going to talk about the fourth down that he didn't go for in the overtime kick. the field goal when earlier fourth and three hit george kittle. they went for it. then they got a little conservative. but everybody to a man we talked to said we felt confident. take the points. take the points and let our defense win. the game didn't work out. >> yep. we're going to have much more highlights and reaction in sports a couple more times. larry and i will be here in las vegas and dan, we send it back to you. yeah, don't go anywhere. we have a lot more coverage.

>> we will going anywhere. >> maybe. larry get a cough drop. i'm sure you were screaming this entire time. your voice is a little hoarse. >> yeah. you notice i'm hanging by a thread. >> hang on. just a little longer, guys. thank you. we'll check in in a little bit. all right. well, a lot of 40 niners fans made the trip to las vegas, hoping to see the team compete in its quest for a sixth super bowl victory. they were treated to a thrilling game, but as you know, it ended in heartbreak. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone joins us live from the stadium. he caught up to some of those fans j.r. how are they doing. how are they coping. well dion as upset as these fans were about this game tonight. >> they were also very positive about their san francisco 49 ers and how far this team came this season. a 40 niners fan walking out of allegiant stadium heartbroken after the 40 niners lost to the chiefs in the super bowl. >> i've been to three super bowls in my life new orleans,

miami and here we lost everyone in devastate. so devastated. i'm from the bay area, danville devastated the mood. >> a somber one among niners fans. there's no words. >> we there and i just don't get how. we just can't finish it off. four years, five years, just we're just so close, j.r, and just. it's not working out, man. i don't know what to do. >> faithful still backing their team after the loss. >> overall, i'm proud of him. they played real well. at the end of the day, being here is a blessing and the team fought through a lot of adversity this year. >> i'm bummed, but but very proud of the team, very proud of where the franchise is and what we're doing. >> the future is very bright. >> some, though not holding back when it comes to pointing the finger ahead, gets tight and tight. >> games. they're running the ball in the third quarter at all. no first downs, one of the reasons why we lost as upset as some were, every 40 niners fan we spoke with backing quarterback brock purdy, hoping

for a different outcome. >> but again, i mean for brock purdy to be here with where he's at in his career, we think he's phenomenal and enjoyable game all the way to the end. >> and it certainly was special hearing that brock purdy support from literally every single fan that we talk with, they are sticking by their quarterback and that was special to see after the loss tonight. and i also will say give credit where credit is due. and the kansas city chiefs fans were very complimentary tonight. i've seen fans over the years get rowdy and out of control. that didn't happen really. fans on both sides were complimentary towards the other team reporting live in las vegas. jr stone, abc seven news. >> all right, way to look at the bright side j.r. we appreciate your reporting right now. we had a team of reporters around the bay area with the faithful as they cheered on the 40 niners venue, as you can imagine were packed with red and gold. but it was just not meant to be. >> deion this is not the ending.

district, fans were getting ready to pour out onto 24th street. instead it's just a lot of disappointment. the fireworks . went off and the flags were waving. but for these 40 niners fans, the celebration cut short. >> it was a hell of a game. i mean, they could have done better. they could have done some better plays, but it was a hell of a game in the mission district. >> roads closed and police present the city ready for a potential championship team. >> we're die hard fans at that. i grew up here. i celebrated the last super bowl. they were here, not even this loss. >> silencing this pack of niners faithful. >> if we stay faithful to the niners, no matter what, there is no this year. probably next year we're going to be a champions. >> tara campbell, abc seven news. i'm ryan curry here in the east coast of san francisco. >> and really it's tough to describe the emotions of some of these fans after the way that game ended. once that touchdown occurred, nothing but silence here in this section of san francisco fans, obviously upset,

wondering what possibly could have changed to result in a 40 niners victory. another year, another devastating loss to the season. fans were hoping this gathering at east shed would turn into a celebration, but when that touchdown happened at the end, those hopes also ended. >> i'm a really big brock purdy fan. iowa state i really wanted him to win. um, unfortunate. that was a good game. but wanted them to win. so i'm sad. >> even with this loss, fans say they do remain somewhat hopeful about the future of this team. a young quarterback with talent everywhere. however this loss, you can tell, is tough for them to swallow right now in san francisco. ryan curry, abc seven news. i'm lauren martinez and we're inside sushi confidential off san pedro square in san jose. >> that was a nail biter game from start to finish. but you know what? the fans remain faithful. >> it was a sellout super bowl. watch party. >> atmosphere is off the hook

turning to the weather now. all right. difficult to top today, spencer. give us something maybe good to look forward to. >> okay. well, we've got a couple of nice days to look forward to. and they're all nice, but in different ways. let's take a look at our 24 hour day planner for tomorrow. in the first half of the day, from 7 a.m. to noon, we're going to have a mix of sun and clouds, so we'll call it a partly cloudy to mostly sunny in the early morning hours. 7:00 it will be 45 degrees at the bay and the coast of only 40 degrees inland. by the time we get to the noon hour, it will be about 56 degrees everywhere inland, bay and coast. going into the afternoon 4:00 mainly sunny skies, 60 degrees inland, 58 around the bay shoreline, 56 at the coast and then after sunset, going into the evening hours 7:00. mostly clear skies, just a few wispy clouds 52 degrees inland, 54 around the bay, 51 near the coast. a lovely day all around and some more lovely days are coming our way before the rain arrives. i'll tell you about that a little bit later. >> dion okay, sounds good.

just putting out some rage for really no reason at all. >> they just wanted to vandalize something, and they did. edwin karenga came to chinatown for lunar new year celebrations saturday, but never expected things would take a destructive turn like this. >> a waymo driverless car stopped in traffic, vandalized and set on fire by a group of people. all of it caught on camera. >> one young man jumped on the hood and then jumped on the windshield. and that kind of started the whole melee. >> witnesses say about a dozen people were involved. one person is seen using a skateboard to break the car's windows, then someone threw a firework inside of the car. nathan vandersteen says he watched the car filled with smoke and catch fire. >> eventually, people started backing away but it was very, very dangerous. the car could have exploded. it's just a mob mentality. everyone, all the adrenaline of the whole situation. it was mostly, i think, young teenagers who were responsible for the damage and the vandalism. >> the fire

departmentrillioneceived bonded and put out the flames, debris and ash left behind. tell a story of what happened here on jackson street, where that waymo was set on fire. waymo tells abc seven news the vehicle was not transported any riders and no injuries have been reported. we are working closely with local safety officials to respond to the situation. the sfpd says it's investigating, but so far no suspects. >> it's totally unacceptable. it's particularly horrific that they did that during chinatown's most important day of the year. totally disrespect supervisor aaron peskin says police are collecting lots of video evidence of the crime in progress. yes, i've talked to them today. they've got good leads and i'm pretty hopeful, if not confident, that arrests will be made in san francisco. >> cornell, bernard abc seven news. a body found on an elevated bart trackway this morning led to major delays throughout the system. >> the victim was found in san francisco between the balboa park and daly city stations at

nine this morning. train service through the area was stopped. bart tells us there is no evidence of foul play. the medical examiner will determine the cause of death. regular bart service resumed at about 130 this afternoon. tomorrow marks 20 years since a major turning point in the fight for marriage equality. on february 12th, 2004, san francisco began issuing marriage licenses for same sex couples. four years later, california voters approved a ban on same sex marriages. proposition eight. the supreme court overturned that ban, but prop eight is still in the state constitution. california voters will have the chance to remove prop eight from the constitution in the november election. well, the national weather service confirms two tornadoes touched down in san luis obispo county last week. these are photos from the aftermath from wednesday's storm in grover beach. the tornadoes tore a path of damage three miles long and are said to be the strongest tornadoes in the county since 1950. no injuries

have been reported. that is the good news. before wednesday, the county had not seen tornadoes in nearly 20 years. what do you think accounts for that? well, we had a line of thunderstorms going through that area during the week. >> thunderstorms create the kind of instability in the atmosphere that can allow a tornado to develop. now they're very unusual in this area. but if we have a powerful thunderstorm with lots of what we call atmospheric instability, they can develop. yeah. pretty scary. apparently they did. yeah. nothing scary coming. our way for the next couple of days. here's a look at live doppler seven. you can see high pressure giving us clear skies mainly offshore though way off shore we've got stormy weather developing and moving in our direction and we're going to have a period of wet weather coming our way starting around midweek. but right now everything is nice and dry. the wind is very calm. we have wind speeds generally under five miles per hour across the bay area right now skies are mainly clear and current temperature readings are 51. in san francisco and san jose. mid to upper 40s at oakland, hayward, san mateo and half moon bay. of the temperature readings right now is a look at calm conditions

in emeryville, 45 at santa rosa, 48 petaluma. low to mid 40s right now at napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. and let's check out our weather headlines overnight and into the early morning. we can expect some patchy fog and some of our valleys and some frosty spots as well. we'll get to that in just a moment. next two days. monday and tuesday, a mix of clouds and sun. skies will be mainly bright and then on wednesday through saturday we'll have that rainy pattern developing that i talked about. we may have four or more consecutive days of some periods of rainfall, but let's focus first on this frost advisory, which will be in effect from nine until i should say, until 9 a.m. tomorrow for the santa clara hills, temperatures as low as 34 degrees. frost can develop. of course, it may kill sensitive vegetation, so bear that in mind. looking at the larger picture. low pressure, low pressure, low temperatures overnight will be mainly in the upper 30s in the north bay, the inland east bay down in the south bay down to only about 42 at san jose, but a little bit chillier in morgan hill, with a low there of 38 degrees and

right around the bay shoreline, we'll see mainly low to mid 40s. highs tomorrow under bright skies, 58 at half moon bay, 59, san francisco 60, in oakland, inland east bay low 60s for the most part down in san jose, a low of 64. tomorrow they'll probably be our warmest reading and our major locations. and up in the north bay, 59 to about 60 degrees. and here is the accuweather seven day forecast. so a couple of nice dry, fairly mild days coming our way tomorrow. and tuesday, wednesday, valentine's day clouds will increase and there is a slight chance of showers on wednesday. if they materialize, they're likely to be very light, so we don't expect wednesday to be a rainy day. but there could be some damp spots. but it will be rainier on thursday, friday, saturday and sunday with a level one storms on. the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. and i want to point out that on sunday , that storm that moves in that day could be a little bit more intense, might be more well, might be a higher ranking. we may elevate it to a level two on

sports from las vegas. it is hard to grade a heartbreak if you're the forty-niners, but that super bowl 54 loss in miami. ten point lead in the fourth quarter that really hurt. overtime time loss here in super bowl 58 to the same team patrick mahomes and the chiefs. it probably hurts even worse. but here we go. i mean those missed opportunities are going to haunt the niners all offseason to the highlights. we go the niners. they came up fired up in this football game. deebo samuel trent williams the boom box leading the way. brock purdy making history as the first ever mr. irrelevant to start a super bowl. patrick mahomes looking for back to back titles and his third ring kyle shanahan trying to win his first big game. yes plenty of taylor swift in the crowd and the niners had joe montana rooting them on up three. nothing late in the second quarter. how about the bag of tricks. get it to jauan jennings, who goes back across

the field to christian mccaffrey and the stanford man is in ten. nothing san francisco. they also led by ten. remember the last time they played the chiefs in the super bowl? jennings was a pretty good quarterback in high school. get crushed when he threw the ball. but hey, it works nice. nice play for the 40 niners. travis kelce a frustrated moment there with andy reid pushed him. the niners had him frustrated the whole game though. turn on this moment. the ball hits daryl luter junior's foot on the punt and the niners can't recover. and then that turns into patrick mahomes finding marquez valdes-scantling for the touchdown. the niners had kept the chiefs out of the end zone for almost three quarters of. the chiefs take a 1310 lead. joe jennings had a chance at mvp, he thought after this touchdown catch the niners back in the lead, but the extra point was blocked. so it's 16 1340 niners. and that extra point block would be huge in this game. jake mooney a chance of redemption later on kicks the go ahead field goal with under two minutes. it's 19 to 16 but you see the time on the clock. just too much time for patrick mahomes and the kansas city

chiefs. as the tensions mount, the chiefs got in field goal range. harrison butker 29 yard kick sends things into overtime. in overtime, the all important coin toss the niners got the ball first. remember the new overtime rules? even if san francisco scored a touchdown, the chiefs would get the ball. but the niners marched down the field. get it to christian mccaffrey. takes it 24 yards. but the niners get stalled as they try to get back into the end zone. moody 27 yard field goal 2219 lead the door though once again open for patrick mahomes a story we've seen before. if you're a 40 niners fan. fourth and one game on the line. what a great play call from andy reid. mahomes eight yard run keeps the chains moving. chiefs in field goal range with just over two minutes to play. mahomes sneaks out the back door again on third and one nine yards. taylor swift, a good performer herself, she's enjoying the patrick mahomes show six seconds on the clock. mahomes goes to a wide open

construction costs, delays and politics. there's finally a new date for its installation. abc seven news reporter lyanne melendez explains why it took so long. >> the noe valley town square is a small refuge in a bustling little neighborhood where reading is rewarded and dogs are looked after, and camping is certainly not allowed. there's no smoking, no feeding the birds, no littering, no glass containers, and still no bathroom. >> it would be helpful to have a toilet here because there are very few. there's no public toilets on 24th street at all. for people who are just visiting, you know, a tourist who's got a got to go.

>> we have an emergency. >> we have to make a peep. it's good to have a toilet. >> the drama surrounding the proposed toilet reads like an afternoon soap opera. the initial cost of $1.7 million shocked even the most skeptical of san franciscans. how could a 150 square foot bathroom cost that much? why not? >> why would it be? you know, is the city. >> last year the city's recreation and parks department gave us a long list of things involved when building a no frills bathroom, such as landscaping, design permits and environmental reviews. >> staff time permit fees and architecture and engineering required to make sure everything works and fits together. >> but when people criticize it for being financially excessive. the city backed off and turned to two out of state vendors who offered to donate a prefabricated, modular bathroom and provide free architecture and engineering services. all they needed to do was to find local union workers to install
