police said an autopsy will be done first thing in the morning. live in the south bay. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> lauren, so many questions to answer here. thank you. new developments on the stanford campus tonight. hundreds of protesters from across the south bay joined in a rally calling for an end to the war in gaza. demonstrators started at an event at san jose state and then organized a car caravan over to stanford, which you see here late last week, the university said they will evict students who have been holding a sit in

protest on campus for more than 100 days. there demanding stanford respond to the ongoing israel-hamas war. but the university says the sit in is unsafe. all right, time to take a quick look at the forecast, because as nice as our weather was today, thatrillionain is returning. it is abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking what we should expect. this week. sandy. >> yeah, and dan, we're going to expect a series of storms that are going to hit the bay area. the first one arriving on valentine's, it's a light level one system. as you look at live doppler seven, it's not far away. so as we time it out for you, when thursday morning at 9:00, we're going to start to see some light to moderate rain moving into the north bay. by 4 p.m, it gets going. this means there will be impacts to the commute to looking at the hourly winds. they do pick up a little bit, but it's not going to be terribly windy. on wednesday. we'll call it breezy. it's a level one on our exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale light to moderate rain on wednesday. slick roads for the afternoon evening commute and breezy at times as we take a look at our rain chances. well,

they continue over the next week i will be back with a closer look coming up. dan ama thank you sandhya. >> now to your voice. your vote as california, four leading candidates for us senate all took to the debate stage tonight in san francisco with the primary election just three weeks away, it's crunch time for this high profile race. and this was the second time these candidates met in a televised debate. >> abc seven news reporter tim john spoke with them afterwards. he's here with us tonight with what they had to say. tim >> yeah. ama and dan those four candidates spent an hour this evening talking about everything from housing affordability to homelessness issues to crime and public safety. all of them trying to make an impression on voters at home. ahead of that march 5th primary, we, along with the california democratic and one republican candidate, took to the stage monday night for another senate debate on the list of topics discussed was a mix of both statewide problems as well as national issues. speaking to abc seven news after the debate, front runner and congressman adam schiff saying

that housing affordability is his top priority. >> we need to build hundreds of thousands of units. we need to vastly expand the low income housing tax credit so we can do it cost effectively and incentivize the development of housing in the bay area. >> also getting mentioned monday evening, specifically oakland and the issues the city has faced when it comes to crime and public safety. hometown candidate and congressman barbara lee responding. but we have to look at the underlying causes of a lot of the criminal activity that's taking place, especially with guns. >> we've got to pass a national assault weapon ban. we've got to get these weapons of war off of the street. >> the sole republican on the stage, steve garvey, saying he wants to address the homelessness crisis. >> garvey stating he thinks the state has wasted money on it for years. >> $30 billion has been thrown at the homeless. it's been wasted. and when i go back to washington, as your next duly elected senator, the first thing i will do is make sure there's

an audit to find out where that money went. >> orange county representative katie porter touted her progressive record during her time in congress. porter urging voters to choose her based off the issues. >> i would say to voters that i'm the candidate they can count on to shake up the senate, to push to change things in washington until california gets what it needs. >> californians will head to the polls for the primary on march fifth, an opportunity to fill a wide open senate seat, something that hasn't happened in the state in decades, says political science professor melissa michaelson. >> given incumbency effects, most people who are in congress or in the senate get reelected. and it's been a really long time since we've had an open seat. >> while the general election might not be until november, michaelson says giving california's system sometimes it's the primary that's actually the more important race, whichever democrat it is that made it to that top two runoff in november. >> that democrat is going to win the statewide election and said, unless something, you know, completely unusual happens now,

the candidates are set to meet for a third debate later this month. >> that is scheduled to take place on the 20th in the studio tonight. tim johns abc seven news. okay, tim, thank you. >> california's primary election is three weeks away, but san francisco's department of elections has already begun scanning the early voting ballots, processing them. but they will not actually be counted until election night. keep in mind that you can also already vote in person at all of the bay area's county registrar offices, and each registered voter in california automatically receives a vote by mail ballot thanks to a post pandemic law signed in 2021. >> california's primary is on march 5th. the last day to register to vote is february 20th, but you can do same day voter registration and your vote will still count after your information is verified. >> another item on the 2024 ballot in california, voters will be asked to reaffirm the gay marriage protections this november, lgbtq advocacy groups are asking voters to amend california's constitution. there's no legal threat to same sex marriage, but the outdated

state constitution still defines marriage as between a man and a woman. this while today marks 20 years since governor newsom defied the federal same sex marriage ban, allowing same sex sex couples to get married in san francisco when he was mayor. during that time, more than 4000 couples from 46 different states married that same month, stamping it the winter of love, john lewis and stuart gaffney were one of the first to marry in california. >> it was the most urgent wedding proposal you've ever heard. it was john screaming into the phone. it's history. we can get married. >> california currently has the largest lgbtq population in the united states. >> police continue to investigate the attack on a driverless car in san francisco during saturday's lunar new year celebration in chinatown. thankfully, no one was inside the waymo robo taxi. witnesses say about a dozen people surrounded the car and started attacking it. some one then threw a firework into the

cream. >> the little shop with big flavors is saying goodbye to its original home after being forced to pack up and leave. >> very depressing. we've been here for 39 years, alex is 62. i'm 63. we were planning to retire in a few years and now we're having to basically start all over again. >> located at the intersection of two of the busiest highways in the area, highway 101 and state route 25. garlic shop owners alex and his brother charlie say they have just days to move as the santa clara valley transportation agency acquires their property under eminent domain to build a brand new intersection. >> people are concerned that another small business mom and pops or brothers business, is being swallowed up by the government. >> the current intersection is over 30 years old, and according to the transportation agency, it does not meet growing traffic demands and is a safety hazard with higher than average crashes. every year. >> it seems to be a little more

traffic. a lot of people, i think, are moving south into the area. the home values are less and so we're attracting a lot more residents. >> the nearly $140 million project will replace highway 25 two lane overcrossing with a four lane overcrossing over highway 101, increase the length of the highway 101 offramp and add upgrades like new traffic signals and bike lanes. for some , the improvements are long overdue, but it comes with a cost in two ways. >> it's a little sad that they're moving because it is an iconic structure and a wonderful spices, but on the other hand, traffic on 101 is just escalate and so much. >> and that was brisa colon reporting the shop will now be moving up the road to bazzini winery. they'll be there until the end of the year. after that, the owners hope to move to a permanent location in developing news down south, los angeles mayor karen bass is looking to solve a major graffiti problem

on an abandoned high rise. >> people keep climbing up the building to tag it. lapd has already arrested people, a number of people, in fact, for tampering with this private property. the police chief says officers recovered spray cans and an illegal firearm during their latest arrest over the weekend. the 27 story tower is a half finished complex in the downtown area, abandoned by developers in 2020. over the past few weeks, the building has been a landmark for social media stunts and graffiti tagging. mayor bass says the safety is the biggest concern. >> i am terrified that someone is going to fall or be pushed. you might know that there are people who are parachuting off of the building. >> the city says they want to clean the building and secure it from future trespass, but developers have not been very cooperative. it's a weird situation. there's a growing concern about a possible fuel leak in the north bay as a major operation to free a stuck fishing boat continues near bodega bay, the coast guard says

the 50 foot aleutian storm ran aground in rough water friday night. >> the ship's four crew members did make it out safely. now rescuers are trying to pull the crab boat off the beach and back into the water, the coast guard says. monday's attempt was not successful because the tow line broke. >> she does weigh about 57 tons and so everything we have has to be a pretty heavy lift and so it definitely has been challenging. but she is a steel hulled vessel, which is actually beneficial to her because she's not breaking up in the surf. the coast guard plans to offload fuel to lighten the vessel, but there are pollution concerns because the 1500 gallons of o diesel on board leak from the tanks. >> all right, the oscars are coming up fast and the festivities are already well underway. this year's nominees gathered for the oscar luncheon this afternoon at the beverly hilton in beverly hills. of course, ryan gosling, sterling k brown and emma stone were some of the big names to hit the carpet before entering the banquet hall for the annual class photo. there it is, the

live doppler seven, because we have a series of storms in the pacific. they're coming our way. this first one on valentine's day is not expected to be a big storm, but the ones that follow over the weekend will bring more impactful weather to the bay area. so we look at what's coming our way and taking a look at live doppler seven right now. just some high clouds out ahead of this system. temperatures at this hour in the 40s and the 50s, it's not going to be quite as cold as it has been as the clouds will insulate us a little bit. so overnight tonight, increasing clouds, valentine's day rain arrives. and for your holiday weekend, wet and windy pattern is back in the picture. so first thing tomorrow morning, temperatures in the 40s. for most of you, it will be mostly cloudy with some patchy fog and can'trillionule out a few sprinkles up to our north. tomorrow afternoon we are looking at highs in the upper 50s to the low 60s, partly to mostly cloudy skies for your tuesday. and then here comes a level one system for wednesday. light to moderate rain, slick roads for the afternoon evening drive that is when you're going to feel the most impact and

breezy at times. as we go hour by hour on wednesday, 9 a.m. light to moderate rain is in the north bay. you will notice it's pretty much sitting there through noon, and then it makes its shift by 4 p.m. we are going to see some pockets of moderate, even heavy, brief, heavy rain that continues at 7 p.m, but more scattered in nature and then by the time thursday arrives, things start to wind down. rainfall projections with this system, about a quarter of an inch in places like san jose, to about three quarters of an inch in santa rosa, higher totals to the north, we're looking at an inch or more now in the mountains. this does turn to snow, and if you are heading up for presidents day weekend, up to three feet for kirkwood, 29in at donner. and here's a live view from zephyr cove. while it is all quiet right now, chance of rain and snow appears on friday. that is going to be your best day of the holiday weekend to travel, because after that it's a rain snow mix. saturday, sunday and presidents day. but the temperatures will remain in the 40s. all four days, so that's why we're talking about a rain snow mix.

here's your weekend storm that is a stronger storm, so it will bring pockets of moderate to heavy rain and snow in the sierra. the next system comes in sunday night and that is going to keep going as we head into monday. so rainfall projections with with the weekend storms, most of you will be in that 1 to 3 inch category. santa cruz mountains picking up over three inches of rain. here's your accuweather seven day forecast. tomorrow's mostly cloudy rain spreads on valentine's day. level one system early morning chance thursday, but you get that short break through friday, which is important. a one for saturday sunday and monday. the weekend storm we may need to bump to a two ama and dan.

a live look at bourbon street, where it's almost 1:30 a.m. local time. it is the place to be in new orleans for mardi gras. tomorrow is fat tuesday, a day of parades, street parties, masked balls and more. ahead of the start of the start of lent on wednesday, and one new orleans native says she's been blessed to celebrate mardi gras for more than a century. mary muniz now enjoys the parades with multiple generations of her family. mary is 104 years old and has been taking part in mardi gras celebrations since she was a child.
