a day of action when they plan to picket outside major airports to push for higher wages and better working conditions. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live at sfo. as we take a live look at the tarmac this morning. and lena, is today's demonstration expected to impact flights? >> amanda, good morning to you. we are told that today's demonstration is not expected to impact flight schedules whatsoever, and that flight attendants participating in this are not actually scheduled to work today. unions representing more than 100,000 flight attendants from airlines, including american alaska, frontier, southwest and united are demanding better pay retirement benefits and more flexible schedules. this comes as nearly two thirds of flight attendants are currently in contract negotiations. the unions also want flight attendants to be paid for all their time working. most are not compensated for time spent waiting between flights in the airport or even time boarding the plane. another concern the danger of unruly passengers with incidents on the rise since the pandemic.

them afterwards, and along with the california three democratic and one republican candidate, took to the stage monday night for another senate debate on the list of topics discussed was a mix of both statewide problems as well as national issues. >> speaking to abc seven news after the debate, frontrunner. and congressman adam schiff saying that housing affordability is his top priority. >> we need to build hundreds of thousands of units. we need to vastly expand the low income housing tax credit. so we can do it. cost effectively and incentivize the development of housing. >> the bay area also getting mentioned monday evening, specifically oakland and the issues the city has faced when it comes to crime and public safety. hometown candidate and congresswoman barbara lee responding. >> but we have to look at the underlying causes of a lot of the criminal activity that's taking place, especially with guns. we've got to pass a national assault weapon ban. we've got to get these weapons of war off of the streets. >> the seoul republican on the stage, steve garvey, saying he

wants to address the homelessness crisis. >> garvey stating he thinks the state has wasted money on it for years. >> $30 billion has been thrown at the homeless. it's been wasted. when i go back to washington as your next newly elected senator, the first thing i will do is make sure there's an audit to find out where that money went. >> orange county representative katie porter touted her progressive record during her time in congress. porter urging voters to choose her based off the issues. >> i would say to voters that i'm the candidate they can count on to shake up the senate, to push to change things in washington until california gets what it needs. >> californians will head to the polls for the primary on march 5th. an opportunity. wide open senate seat, something that hasn't happened in the state in decades, says political science professor melissa michaelson. >> given incumbency affects most people who are in congress or in the senate, get reelected, and it's been a really long time since we've had an open seat.

>> while the general election might not be until november. michaelson says giving california system sometimes it's the primary that's actually the more important race, whichever democrat it is that made it to that top two runoff in november, that democrat is going to win the statewide election. >> and unless something you know , completely unusual happens. >> tim johns, abc seven news. >> breaking overnight, the senate approved a funding bill meant to provide aid for israel, ukraine and taiwan. in the 70 to 29 vote happened just hours ago. 22 senate republicans supported the final measure, while two democrat. it's along with the lone independent, bernie sanders , voted against the $95 billion foreign aid package. now heads to the house of representatives where it faces an uncertain future. in a statement yesterday, house speaker mike johnson had threatened to kill the measure if it makes it to the house. speaker johnson claims it, quote, fails to meet the mandate of securing america's borders. last week, johnson helped dismantle an emergency aid package that he

also said lacked sufficient border security. this morning, new information is emerging about the woman who walked into pastor joel osteen's, texas megachurch on sunday and started shooting gloria. we're learning she may have struggled with mental illness. >> that's right. amanda, in a facebook post, jenna say moreno's ex mother in law says she suffered from schizophrenia. courtrillionecords show that she also had a turbulent marriage that ended in a bitter custody battle. moreno's ex, accusing her of violence and putting her son in danger multiple times. according to authorities, the weapon that moreno used was bought legally in december. despite her history of mental illness. the motive for the shooting is still unclear. >> want to know the motive? how she got the weapon, why she did this? we're not there yet. >> now. police found anti-semitic writings, but they did not provide other details. and they say moreno may have had a dispute with her ex-husband's family, some of whom are jewish. moreno was shot and killed by

off duty police and her seven year old son was also injured. he was listed in critical condition. julian >> so sad. >> thank you, gloria. if you have plans to travel to the east coast today, be prepared because a massive snowstorm is causing hundreds of flight delays and cancellations, and it could have ripple effects all across the country, depending on where you're headed, you could see anywhere from eight inches to a full foot of snow. in boston, all public schools are canceled today in the city as 40,000 tons of salt ready to go. new york city could see 5 to 8in of snow, and that's the most they've seen in two years. >> new york city could see more snow in one hour than we've seen the entire winter. 7 to 9 a.m. we're getting that heavy snow along i-90. five hartford back through the hudson valley, northwestern new jersey, getting some of the heaviest snow all the way through late morning. >> now, this storm arrives in the northeast after soaking millions along the gulf coast and southeast over the weekend with rain. >> a civil rights organization

has announced plans to sue the city of san diego over recent. flooding. the group claims the city failed to maintain its stormwater infrastructure, which led to devastating floods last month, mostly in lower income neighborhoods. many people are still unable to return to their homes. this latest lawsuit is one of several demanding payments for residents and changes including establishing a stormwater utility fund infrastructure project. eventually, these lawsuits could gain class action status and two mudslides in big sur have trapped at least 50 people near paul's slide and led caltrans crews to offer daily convoys out of the area. the slides happened last week within days of each other, officials say business in big sur is down as much as 35. we. you've got a 4.5 hour drive now to go across the convoy across paul slide, come back around. >> and so each of those residents is having to make some really significant plans about that. depending on the duration

and how four people died inside a san mateo home. the disturbing discovery was made on alameda de las pulgas, near 42nd avenue yesterday morning. san mateo police say they got a call for a welfare check at the home. they had to break a window to get inside, and that's when they found four people dead. a man, a woman and two children. sources. tell the abc7 news i-team the children were four year old twin boys. officials have not released. how they died. >> we can only assume what has happened. whatever has happened is a major tragedy. and you wonder what could have been done to avoid it. >> autopsies are expected to be performed today to figure out exactly what happened. police say there is no danger to the

public, no sign of forced entry. and it appears to be an isolated incident. >> elon musk takeover of twitter, now known as x, is getting traced back to his encounter with a florida college student who posted tracking information for private jets owned by famous people. that's according to a new book describing how everything went down. author kurt wagner suggests musk targeted buying shares or started buying shares rather, of twitter after his request to shut down jack sweeney's account was denied. the book claims the account became the driving motivation for musk buying the san francisco based company. sweeney s jet tracker is still active, though he posts public information about private jets used by people like taylor swift, jeff bezos and mark zuckerberg. >> san francisco mayor london breed, now weighing in on the attack that left a waymo car burned and destroyed. her statement reads in part, quote, it was an unacceptable act that has no place in our city, and we will work to hold those who

committed it accountable. it happened saturday night in chinatown. no one was inside the self-driving car, which ended up surrounded by people who smashed windows, shattered the windshield and set off a firework inside the car. waymo sent us an updated statement about what happened, saying, quote, our vehicle was navigating this area along with other human driven cars as a pop up street show held up all traffic, at which point a crowd of folks rushed the waymo. the sfpd says it's investigating. so far, no suspects. >> los angeles mayor karen bass is looking to solve a major graffiti problem on an abandoned high rise. people keep climbing up the building to tag it. l.a. pd, they've already arrested multiple people for tampering with the private property. the 27 story tower is a half finished complex torn down in the downtown area. it was abandoned by its developers in 2020. over the past few weeks, the building has been a landmark for social media stunts and graffiti tagging. mayor bass says safety is the biggest concern.

there's growing concern about a possible fuel leak in the north bay as a major operation to free a stuck fishing boat continues near bodega bay. we first brought you this story yesterday morning. the coast guard says the 50 foot aleutian storm ran aground in rough water friday night. the ship's four crew members, all made it out safely. now, rescuers are trying to pull the crab boat off the beach and back into the water. the coast guard says yesterday's attempt was not successful because the tow line broke. >> she does weigh about 57 tons and so everything we have has to be a pretty heavy lift and so it definitely has been challenging. but she is a steel hulled vessel, which is actually beneficial to her because she's not breaking up in the surf. >> the coast guard plans to offload fuel to lighten the vessel, but there are pollution concerns because the 1500 gallons of diesel on board could leak from the tanks. >> today, we are expecting an

update on how much longer the pacifica pier will remain closed. massive waves damaged the historic pier in late december, forcing it to close for repairs. city officials originally said about half of the pier would be reopened by valentine's day on christmas day, this fire burned a strip mall on el camino real and los altos in nearly two months later, the busy roadway is finally reopened to vehicle traffic. the road reopening came ahead of schedule, actually. for weeks, drivers had to detour around what's left of that burned strip mall. now, demolition on the building is in its final stages. the city is hoping bike lanes and sidewalks will reopen soon. >> we understand that it did cause some inconveniences, but we're glad that county fire was able to conduct their investigation in a safe manner. we're going to continue working efficiently and safely to be able to get those open for the community. >> it's still unclear what caused that massive fire in las

>> we're learning more this morning about the latest hospital stay for defense secretary lloyd austin. gloria is at the live desk with our details. good morning gloria. >> good morning amanda. for the second time in less than two months, us defense secretary lloyd austin is back in the hospital. austin has been admitted into the critical care unit at walter reed medical center. he was taken back to the hospital on sunday for what the defense department called an emergent bladder issue. now, officials say that they expect austin to make a full recovery and that his prognosis for fighting prostate cancer remains excellent. the 70 year old has transferred duties to his deputy, kathleen hicks, only this time the public and the president know about it. the disclosure is far more prompt than it was in january, when, for days, president biden and other senior officials were not aware that austin was hospitalized or the reason we did not handle this right, and i did not handle this right.
