in some parts, over 1,000 flights already cancelled along with possibility of coastal flooding. >> this is a live picture from the abc road cam on the current conditions in new jersey. we have team coverage starting with ginger in fort lee, new jersey. good morning to you, ginger. >> morning to you, robin. we are still getting blasted. the wind at times is gusting to 20 miles an hour. you can't see manhattan on the other side of the george washington bridge, so we know this snow is flying. the heaviest totals are falling north. some people approaching that foot mark. all of this as people are still trying to get around in the morning commute. overnight wet, heavy snow beginning to blanket parts of the east coast. millions, from kentucky up through the northeast, bracing for the biggest snowstorm in two years. the snow disrupting the i-95 corridor just as the morning commute gets under way. >> this is expected to be a a short duration winter storm that has the potential to be high impact. >> some coastal communities in

snowstorm in years. doesn't take much. new york city needs 3 inches to do that. i think we'll probably hit close. earlier this morning some of the totals were coming in. pennsylvania, 10.5 inches. as of 8 a.m. west hartford at 7 inches. we only have about two, three hours of the heavy snow left as this thing wraps up most of the afternoon, starts to clear west to east. by tonight the whole thing is out of here. while there are the 1 to 2 inch snowfall rate, it will be considerable because so many folks including philadelphia, hartford, even providence, rhode island, are in deficit, we are going to see a considerable snowstorm for this fat tuesday. even if you're on the low end and you get this compressed frozen stuff, tonights it is not going anywhere. temperatures will drop into the 20s. we could see more slick spots tomorrow morning even when the storm is long gone. >> at least some good news out of it. you mentioned boston. that's where rob marciano is for

us. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning, michael. it's been awhile here in boston as well. just about an inch a month ago. less than 10 inches this year. last year was weak, too. this salt pile has plenty of salt. couple hundred thousand tons of it, as a matter of fact. they've not just serving boston, the entire state of massachusetts and parts of new hampshire, too. these big tractor trailers come in, get loaded up and head out to their communities where they are dispersed as real salt trucks that salt the road. they'll be busy here. the cranes behind that truck, they offload big ships to replenish this amount of salt. snow emergency here in boston with rain turning to snow now. schools and public offices are cold. not just looking at snow, winds. probably gonna see some power outages. speaking of the water, coastal section, this afternoon during high tide we expect a significant storm surge.

flooding will be an issue as well. not a huge boston blizzard but certainly a high impact storm. michael? >> a lot going on there. rob, thank you for that. clearing the roads will also be crucial as the storm blows through. stephanie ramos is in the poconos in pennsylvania doing her part. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: michael, good morning. we are riding along with the pennsylvania department of transportation here. right in front of us we've got two snow plow trucks. they started their operation around 3 a.m. this morning when the snow really started to accumulate here in northeast pennsylvania. the first truck is plowing. that second truck is plowing and spreading salt. here in the state they are working with more than 2,000 snow plows covering 40,000 miles of road. you can see right now the snow is falling. it is wet. it is sticky. it's kind of like a pan cake batter mix. in some parts of this county, the roads are slick. they are snow covered. in this area, about 6 inches or snow has fallen.

6 inches of snow has fallen. it is about 30 degrees. lot of teams have been pretreating these roads. i gotta tell you, the snow plow drivers that are driving those trucks in front of us, they came over to supplement the crews from philadelphia. they were excited to see this much snow. george? >> okay, stephanie. thanks. latest on inflation. new numbers out expected to show signs of lower prices. chief business correspondent rebecca jarvis is tracking the data. good morning, rebecca. >> good morning, george. these reports are just a reflection of what things cost us. they are a signal about whether the fed is going to hike interest rates again, making it more expensive to borrow. today's report is expected to show prices were up 3.1% from a year ago. that is an improvement from december. it is less than analysts were hoping for. one area where they've already come down is gasoline. today the national average $3.22 a gallon. last year it was $3.42 a gallon. there are items also on your

breakfast table right now that are dropping in price. cereal prices down about a percent. sausage down almost 3.5%. coffee, thank goodness, is down 1.5%. now, if you are dining out, it is a very different story. prices up 5.1%. in real term, inflation is no longer surging. typical family currently spending about $211 more a month on the same goods and services than they were a year ago. it's when you look backwards to two years ago where you really see that difference. $605 a month to two years ago. three years ago you are still paying today about $1,000 more a month on the same goods and services. this is why the fed has continued to increase interest rates. that has a cost, too. we see it in mortgages, auto loans and credit cards, robin. >> all right, rebecca. thanks to you. now to the flight attendant day of action. thousands are planning to hit the picket lines this morning, demanding higher pay and the end of what they are calling legacy sexism. erielle reshef has details.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is really big news. this morning flight attendants around the world will be on the picket line in what's expected to be their largest ever collective action. unions representing 100,000 flight attendants from airlines including american, alaska, frontier, southwest and united are demanding better pay, retirement benefits and more flexible schedules. in a joint statement they're vowing to fight corporate greed saying our time on the job must be compensated. we need flexibility and control of our lives. legacy sexism that traditionally devalued our jobs must be stamped out and replaced with the true value of our work. the unions wants flight attendants to be paid for all their time working. most are not even compensated for the time spent waiting between flights in the airport, or even time boarding the plane. another concern for flight attendants is the danger of unruly passengers with incidents on the rise since the pandemic. flight schedules are not expected to be affected today.

flight attendants scheduled to work have been encouraged to picket virtually. >> and drivers with uber and lyft also are about to go on strike, right? >> they are expected to go on strike tomorrow. just in time for valentine's day. uber is saying most drivers are not expected to participate. shouldn't be a huge impact, but they're making their voices heard. >> everybody just wants fair wages and to be treated fairly. >> yep. that's right. >> thank you. overnight the senate passed a bill providing aid to israel and ukraine. it faces gop opposition in the house. selina wang has the story. good morning, selina. >> reporter: good morning, george. the senate started voting on this at 5:15 a.m. and it just passed moments ago. senators worked through the night, overcoming delays from some republicans to pass more aid to ukraine, israel and taiwan. but this will face strong push back in the house. in fact, house speaker mike johnson said he's not even going to take it up in the house unless it includes changes to border policy. that's exactly what senators originally tried to do.

a group of bipartisan senators worked for months to negotiate a massive bill that would address foreign aid and the immigration crisis. but then donald trump derailed it by pressuring republicans to vote against it. so now the senate is back at square one with its $95 billion bill that only addresses foreign aid, with no clear prospects in the house. instead, george, today the house is going to once again look to try to impeach homeland security secretary mayorkas for his handling of the immigration crisis. that vote failed yesterday and democrats are slamming this as a baseless stunt that's a waste of time. george? >> selina wang, thank you very much. michael? >> all right, george. now new details on the shooting at joel osteen's megachurch. officials identified the woman that opened fire before being killed by law enforcement. they now say the 7-year-old boy injured in the shooting was her son. mireya villarreal has the latest. >> reporter: this morning new video reveals the terrifying scene inside joel osteen's houston megachurch lakewood during a shooting rampage that

wounded two. the shooter, who was killed inside the church, is now identified as jenesa moreno. she brought her son with her. there is no word on who shot the boy but he sustained a head wound. parishioners seen trying to escape and screaming in terror. gunshots going off just as a spanish service was about to begin at osteen's church, home to one of the largest congregations in the u.s. >> she immediately starts firing inside of the hallway. multiple rounds are fired by her, at which point officer moreno of the houston police department, as well as agent herrera returned fire. she eventually falls to the ground.

the 7-year-old child falls to the ground as well from gun fire. >> reporter: two weapons were recovered at the scene including an ar-15. anti-semitic writings were found on the shooter. >> there was a sticker on the rifle that stated palestine. >> reporter: authorities say one of the weapons was bought legally in december. the shooter obtained the gun despite her history of mental illness and arrest dating back to 2005 on charges including assault. houston's police chief directly told me that they are now aware of the shooter's mental health history and they are delving into it. when we pressed the fbi about how this person with a criminal background like this could have gotten ahold of not just one, but two guns, they side stepped that question and said that is part of the larger investigation. robin? >> folks want answers, mireya. thank you. now to the investigation after a deadly subway shooting here in new york. a dispute between two groups of teens ended with six people being shot, one fatally. trevor ault is in the bronx with

the latest. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, robin. so this gunfire erupted during rush hour monday evening, as you mentioned. six people were shot, one killed. police say this was not a random attack. according to police sources, this began as a confrontation between teens on the train as it was pulling into the station here in the bronx, not too far from yankee stadium. according to those sources, one person drew their weapon. it began on the train and then spilled onto the platform. victims range from 14 up to 71 years old.dóa■ sources say the 14-year-old who was shot was likely involved in this confrontation in some capacity. everyone else who was shot was an innocent bystander. we have heard five of the six victims have nonlife threatening injuries but one died at the hospital. the shooter fled the scene. according to police, no weapon was recovered, no arrests have been made but the police chief said when an arrest is made, it needs to be swift

and strong consequences. michael? >> thank you, trevor. going to turn to the latest on defense secretary lloyd austin, who was admitted to the critical care unit at walter reed on sunday. our chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz has more. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning. secretary austin remains in the hospital this morning in the intensive care unit. it's not clear how long he will be there. austin had prostate cancer surgery in late december. his prognosis for cancer is excellent. he caught it early. but this is the second serious complication believed to be from that initial surgery. he was taken to the hospital on sunday for what the pentagon described as an emergency bladder issue. monday his doctors say he underwent nonsurgical procedures under general anesthesia to address that issue. beyond that, the pentagon is saying very little. but unlike last time, when austin was taken to the icu and kept it secret for days, austin

did let the white house know immediately and did transfer his duties to his deputy within hours of his arrival at walter reed. doctors say austin is expected to resume his duties today, but he was supposed to be heading to europe for meetings with nato allies. that, george, will not be happening. george? >> okay, martha, thank you very much. now to the special election to replace george santos who was expelled from the house last year. voters are going to the polls in a race crucial to house control. aaron katersky is at a polling place on long island. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. facing criminal charges and mockery, george santos was expelled from the house in december and ever since, he's been cutting videos on cameo and talking with federal prosecutors about cutting a plea deal. while two candidates, hand picked by their parties, now are going for the spot. tom swaze is trying to reclaim a seat he held for three turns. republicans are running ozzy phillip a former israeli army soldier and county politician who also happens to be a registered democrat.

and services as they were a year ago. where you really feel that difference is when you compare that spending to two years ago. up $605 a month compared to two years ago it is up $1,000 a month. one area that is driving prices lower is gasoline. the national average is about $3.22 a gallon. a year ago it was $3.42 a gallon. there are also items on your breakfast table that are dropping. cereal down about a percent. sausage down 3.5 nearly. coffee, those prices are down 1.5%. hallel hallelujah. it is a very different story if you're going out to eat. prices are up 5.1%. valentine's day might be pricey if you haven't already bought those chocolates. you might find a surprise at checkout. cocoa prices are at a 47-year high due to climate issues and chocolate prices as a result have surged 17% over the last two years. hershey's says their prices rose 9% last year.

involved, both emotionally and financially, in their adult children's lives. >> there she is, my favorite. >> what? >> can you go now? >> reporter: in a new survey, majority of parents admitting they text or talk on the phone with their adult children at least a few times a week. adriana said her input is helping her daughter enter adulthood. >> the more we help them and have that confidence that life is an experiment. if she feels she has to come to me for every decision or every relationship, then i'm not doing my job. >> reporter: while fewer than half of young adults 18-34 surveyed admit they're financially independent from their parents, 69% say it's how they prefer things. nine in ten parents rating those same relationships as excellent. >> a lot of parents, we feel the need to be needed versus wanting

to be wanted. we have to make peace with that idea that it's okay for our kids not to need us on a day to day basis. >> reporter: her step daughter said the need should not come at the cost of her independence. >> i definitely don't wish they were more involved just because they can be if i ask for that help. >> reporter: experts suggest there can be both pros and cons to parents staying too involved in their adult child's life. >> if you're communicating to your child at any age, i'm involved, but i believe that you can cope, then i think that's really positive involvement that's gonna help them thrive. >> we get it. of course, if you come from that old school mentality, there are those concerns here about failure to launch or creating dependency or an inability to make decisions. but what really stood out to me was the fact that most parents, nine in ten, rate their relationships with their adult children as good or excellent. it's consistent across income.

some people might think, oh, financial support, that's going to inpact one type of person. but it's throughout age groups and income spectrums. >> our experts say boundaries. boundaries are key. how do you start that conversation? >> it can be tricky but you want to have it as an on going conversation. of course, if you're texting all the time and talking on the phone, there's plenty of opportunities to do this. but what you want to do is talk it through, have a sense of those boundaries, be open, show empathy. and again, whether it's coming from the parent or the child, you just want to remember what that core of that relationship is, the importance of that relationship. >> have as clear a conversation as you can have. >> exactly. >> okay. boundaries, that's great. but what if you're the child and you're thinking, my parents, little too much? >> did you ever think that, robin? i never thought that about my parents. >> no, i didn't. no, no, i didn't. >> i'm going to guess all of us were living in a different world, where at 18 years old i was like, there you go. you've got your student loans. good luck.

she did. she told me i would be on the show one day. we were fans of the show. she knows how much i love to be in the moment. i'm always the life of the party. i'm always doing something. i have been doing improv, even in my standup for years. i won an award, we had a new york based comedy awards show. i won best impromptu comic that year. >> that says something. >> i won best physical comic one year. that is truly what makes me tick. when i started doing standup, i took an improv class at the old improv club, i believe 44th street. >> not far from here. >> after i finished that class that summer, the club closed down. i was happy i had a chance to get in there. one of my teachers was from sctv. i had a chance to get on this amazing show. my wife manifested it. you know, she said i can see you and larry together.

>> she saw it. >> yeah. even when i got on the show the first day, first few day, larry said, seems like we've been working together forever. >> if someone hasn't seen the show -- first of all, shame on them. how would you describe it? >> oh. i would describe it as a show that has the ability to touch your nerve, be cringe worthy and funny at the same time. at the same time be relevant and connect people in different ways, i think. larry has this way of social fascination. yeah, he has this way of finding nuances in life that happened to him or he just hears about it. he's able to take that and just, like, make it come to life, you know, all over again. you know? i think it's almost like he's underhand pitching the cast, do you know what i mean?

it's there already. how do you take it and bring it to life in that moment? you still have to follow the rules of improv. >> no cheating. >> no cheating. oh one time we had an actor on set one time. he had little notes in his hand. larry said, no cheating, and tore it up. this is all, really just based on the outline and really, you know -- but things come to me. i don't know how it works. >> it works. >> i get into the moment and it just comes to life. i truly use my standup skills. it's almost as if i'm performing all the time. trying to make one person laugh. >> well, you always do that. j.b. smooth, ladies and gentlemen.
