>> from abc news in new york. >> this is america, this morning. >> good wednesday morning, everyone i'm andrew dymburt. >> happy valentine's day i'm rhiannon ally. we do want to begin this morning with that terrifying crash inside a hospital in texas, a car careening into the emergency room. >> patients and staff running for their lives. this was the scene moments after a car came crashing through an emergency room in austin, texas. smoke filling the waiting room at saint david's north medical center. the vehicles tires apparently still screeching as patients and staff ran for cover . stephen hughes was waiting for his wife in emergency surgery. >> i saw taillights of a vehicle buried deep into the into the lobby. i could hear tires spinning. um and there was some glass and water on the ground. >> the driver was pronounced dead on the scene. hospital staff and fire fighters performing emergency medical

services. >> they also did extrication of the vehicle and started with the hospital staff with cpr on that patient. at least four people were injured, including two children. >> some left in critical condition. the emergency room is now working to find other hospitals. for some patients, we have eight patients that are queued up to go to other facilities just so that we can better regroup. reporter police say the crash does not appear to be intentional for stephen hughes. he's just grateful his wife is okay. their anniversary was just yesterday. >> i'm very happy to be here safely, be with my wife and she's doing well. the hospital says the crash has not affected operations outside the emergency department. >> breaking overnight, democrats have flipped the seat that was vacated by disgraced new york congressman jorge santos. tom suozzi, a former congress man, defeated republican mazapil. 54 to 46% in a special election that focused on the border crisis and abortion. it was expected to be a tight race, but a snowstorm kept many voters

are 213. the resolution is adopted. the republican led house narrowly impeaching homeland security secretary alejandro mayorkas after a failed effort last week. >> they accused mayorkas of failing to enforce immigration laws, triggering a crisis at the southern border that has resulted in millions of illegal migrant crossings since president biden took office. >> it shows that that our conference is willing to hold the biden administration accountable. we did exactly what we should be doing. now it's up to the senate to do their job. >> but the impeachment articles are expected to be rejected by the senate, which is controlled by democrats. majority leader chuck schumer calling the move a new low for house republicans. democrats and some republicans insist this all amounts to simple policy disagreement. house republicans just days ago rejected a bipartisan on border security deal, saying it wasn't tough enough. president biden warning history is watching. >> and i say to the house members, house republicans, you got to decide side. are you

going to stand up for freedom or are you going to side with terror and tyranny? are you going to stand with ukraine? are you going to stand with putin? when we stand with america or with trump? >> the senate could take up the impeachment by the end of the month, and that bipartisan border deal also included funding for israel and the war in ukraine. that funding was approved separately by the senate yesterday, but is still hung up in the house. andrew. >> adam. thank you. new details about this crash during yesterday's snowstorm near boston. an ambulance dashboard camera captured that car flying over the median, nearly hitting the ambulance. the paramedic behind the wheel spoke to us about the split second decision he made as the crash unfolded. but it was a last second decision to you know, go left or right and luckily i think i made the right decision. >> luckily, when i approached the car, it was a single person. um, he actually was uninjured. um i think the biggest takeaway from this, as everybody else is,

you know, wearing a seatbelt and airbags, you know, definitely, you know, probably saved his life. >> a 17 year-old was driving that car. some parts of the northeast got 15in of snow. we'll check today's forecast in just a few moments. >> now to your money. last month's inflation was worse than expected. grocery prices were among those going up. abc's leana moise takes a look. this morning americans are paying the price for rising inflation. >> from the grocery store to housing and transportation prices were 3.1% higher in january compared to a year ago, which was worse than analysts expected. in response, the dow, plunging 500 points while it was, showed improvement was not nearly as good as anticipated. >> prices are up a lot, so investors were expecting perfection when they didn't get it. rent and housing costs increased 0.6. >> a major driver of inflation getting behind the wheel of a car. also more expensive. >> it's a lot more to, uh, to

own a, to purchase a car, particularly a new vehicle. and because of that costs a lot more to get insurance on a car. >> prices for many groceries also on the rise, including cereal and beverages. we're seeing prices rise for fruits and vegetables. >> they were up a lot during the month. soda prices jumped a lot. so all in all, prices for food are growing more slowly than they have been. but they're still, you know, things that we all enjoy. were prices are jumping, still jumping since january 2020, just before the pandemic, grocery prices are up a whopping 25% and beef prices could hit a record high this year due to bad weather and feed costs. >> to keep up with the cost of living, more workers are pushing for higher wages. flight attendants picketed yesterday. those at alaska airlines have voted to authorize a strike, and today uber, lyft and doordash drivers are planning to strike, demanding higher pay for a wage. >> growth is now outpacing

inflation for most wage groups. still very uncomfortable for people and particularly low wage, lower income households. they're struggling with the still very high food prices. rents are a lot higher than they were. the cost of energy and electricity. so kind of basic things that people need now, the bad news on inflation means don't expect the federal reserve to cut interest rates any time soon. >> rhiannon andrew lionel. >> thank you. disturbing new figures are raising concern about the safety of top court officials here in the u.s. us marshals say serious threats against federal judges and prosecutors rose by 55% last year. the son of a federal judge in new jersey was killed in 2020, prompting congress to pass a law protecting judges privacy. but critics argue that's not enough. >> well, it's time to party in casey, the chief super bowl victory parade is today. school is out in kansas city. ford trucks will drive the parade route, launching 1,000 pounds of confetti. more than a million fans are expected to attend, but
