top of a group of state prosecutors. and they've been busy between monday through friday of last week, chp did a temporary surge operation used these officers diving right into the numbers. the governor's office says last week's surge resulted in a total of 71 suspects arrested and 145 stolen vehicles recovered and four crime linked firearm seized. they say beyond the surge, the chp now has 72 officers assigned to the greater oakland area. suspects were arrested for a number of things, including possession of stolen property, auto theft, drug possession, driving under the influence and more. this also includes the arrest of the suspect involved in a viral video of a berkeley apple store smash and grab, where dozens of iphones were stolen last week, oakland mayor shengtao explained the early part of the plan. >> you know, doing the traffic stops if you are speeding, if you are running red lights or what have you, they'll be able to do the traffic stops. they

will also be in key corridors like our hegenberger corridor, where the airport is at, and our business districts. >> in a statement, governor newsom said through coordinated efforts with local partners and increased deployment. chp is making a difference and making oakland and the east bay safer. we're sending a clear message crime will not go unchecked in oakland and east bay neighborhoods. now we don't know if charges have been filed against any of the people arrested last week or when the da plans to file charges, the governor's office says the chp will keep an increased presence in the east bay and will continue to do unannounced surge operations in high crime areas. live in studio lena howland, abc seven news. >> thanks so much, lena. now to new developments. the interim police chief of the vallejo police department is expected to resign. according to the online publication open vallejo. jason to has accepted a job as police chief of the salinas police department. he served as interim

chief in vallejo for a little over a year. former chief shani williams abruptly resigned in 2022. a new report by the center on juvenile and criminal justice found that police in california cleared just 13% of reported crimes in 2022. that's down 20% from 1985. the group says during that same period, police funding grew 250. clearance rates for property crimes were even lower. >> the statewide clearance rate for property crime hit an all time low of just 7.2. that means nearly 93% of all reported property crimes in california. that year went unsolved. >> the social justice group presented the new report yesterday and says it's critical of how often police in california are solving crimes. it calls for continued funding of treatment and rehabilitation programs for people who he once served as san francisco's interim mayor. >> now he wants a full time at

the job. mark farrell has officially entered the race against mayor london breed. farrell served several months after the sudden death of ed lee back in 2018. he tells abc seven news reporter tim johns he has major plans for the city. some are already grabbing headlines. >> the race to become san francisco's next mayor. got a little more crowded tuesday. >> i am here today to officially announce the launch of my campaign for mayor of san francisco, mark farrell, a venture capitalist, is hoping to get his old job back. >> back in 2018, farrell then a city supervisor, was appointed mayor after the death of ed lee. now, farrell joins a race including current mayor, london breed supervisor ahsha safai and businessman and philanthropist daniel lurie. during a news conference, farrell, taking direct aim at breed, blaming her for what he calls the city's decline in post pandemic. farrell says if elected, one of his top priorities would be public safety. he.

the next year. in reality, it would rise by 50 or 0.5% growth. well that caused the stock to jump by 60% in the first few minutes, but quickly course corrected and the company closed at an 18% gain. stock futures have been rising overnight after the dow suffered its worst day since march of last year, when it dropped 500 points yesterday after a report showed inflation was worse than expected. we told you about this yesterday morning on abc seven mornings. inflation was 3.1% in january, analysts expected it to be 2.9, though much lower than the peak people are still still feeling the financial pinch right now. rent and housing costs increased 0.6, and since january 2020, growth prices are up 25. i bet you can believe that to keep up with the cost of living, more workers are pushing for higher wages. yesterday, flight attendants. picketed and today uber, lyft and doordash drivers are planning to strike, demanding

that are queued up to go to other facilities just so that we can better regroup. >> two children and two adults were rushed to another local hospital. one of the children and one of the adults both had serious injuries. police say the crash appears to be unintentional and doctors say the building appears to be in good condition. none of the hospital's other operating lanes were interrupted. the e.r. rerouted ambulances for a time, but at last check are still accepting walk in patients. amanda thank you so much, gloria. >> the abc seven news i-team is piecing together new information on the tragedy inside a san mateo county home. the bodies of four people, two children and their parents were discovered monday morning on alameda, de las pulgas in 42nd avenue. investigators believe the father shot his wife in the bathroom and then killed himself. the four year old twin boys were also found dead in the home, but sources tell the i-team they were likely poisoned. they were

just like sweet little kids, you know, i just wanted to give him a hug. >> what could have happened? what on earth happened? and let me tell you, i didn't want to go to sleep last night. >> the san mateo coroner's office has not officially identified the victims. sources indicate the couple both worked in the tech industry. >> it is 536 right now. and two teens in the bay area have died doing ridiculous stunts like these for likes on social media. the video you see right here is from new york city, and it shows what's being called train surfing. it just does not get dumber than this. here in the bay area, a five year old was found. excuse me, a 15 year old was found on the track sunday between the balboa park in daly city bart stations and just last month, 19 year old daniel barone died in the same area. now, some supervisors are asking bart for solutions. >> and this young man that died recently had done it before. back in january. so i know his mother had taken away his phone, told him that he was going to

stop his instagram account, and sure enough, he did it again and unfortunately it was fatal. >> our media partner, the san francisco standard, spoke to daniel barone's mother, who is now working to bring awareness to the dangers of this stunt. >> the man accused of stealing a small plane, then crashing it on the beach in half moon bay, is refusing to accept counsel in court. 50 year old luis gustavo perez of miami refused a court appointed attorney during a hearing yesterday. he says he wants to represent himself in the case. erice is charged with stealing a single engine plane from palo alto airport last week. the plane was flown about 30 miles, then made a hard landing on poplar beach. >> passengers helped flight attendants break up a mid-air fight on a plane that took off from oakland. southwest airlines says two customers got disruptive on board a flight yesterday from oakland to kauai. it's unclear how the disagreement started. the plane's crew and other passengers got between the two.

one passenger in particular was seen calming down. one of them in there when the plane landed in kauai. both men, of course, were detained in today's gma first look passengers aboard a norwegian cruise ship are livid after the cruise line changed the itinerary without warning, here's abc news reporter trevor ault in this morning's gma first look. >> what was supposed to be the cruise of a lifetime reroute did. so we're angry. >> we want to be heard. we want answers. it happened aboard a norwegian cruise line originally slated to travel around south america and then on to paradise bay, antarctica. >> but after boarding, passenger helen miller noticed the trips. description. name was changed to simply round trip of south america, and the itinerary had been altered. >> we are not going anywhere near mainland antarctica, which is what we paid for norwegian cruise line tells abc. >> the ship did go to antarctica, but instead of heading to paradise bay near the mainland, it instead went to admiralty bay off an island 200 miles further north. passenger

>> happening tomorrow, the oakland a's will meet to consider a lease extension at the oakland coliseum. the san francisco chronicle is reporting that team officials will meet thursday with representatives from oakland and alameda county. the team's current lease runs out after the 2024 season. now, the a's have look, but they have not found a place to play beyond this season. while they wait for a new stadium to potentially be built in las vegas, presumably by the 2028 season. well this comes as the a's just made history after announcing the team's new play by play announcer, jenny cavnar becomes the first woman to be a primary play by play announcer in major league baseball history. she's been in the business for 20 years, most recently serving as the backup play by play announcer for the colorado rockies. 40 niners players, coaches and staff. they are still coping, trying to process this sunday's super bowl loss. >> yeah, last night, as they cleaned out their lockers and wrapped up the season, they said they're using it as motivation

oakland airport cameras. mostly cloudy. we're dry from this vantage point. you take a look at the rainfall possibilities and they really start to increase as we head later in the day, right around lunchtime and then into the early afternoon. that's when we have the best chance of finding those showers moving through. you have plans later on this evening for the holiday. do take the umbrella, but by six, seven, 8 p.m, the showers are starting to wind down, so it's not a long duration event by any means, and rainfall less than a half of an inch. with this level, one light storm, winter storm warning in effect until 4 p.m. tomorrow. up to two feet of fresh snow coming above 6000ft. so we do get a little bit of cold air mixed in in the sierra with this system. highs today. back here at home, we're getting you into the upper 50s and lower 60s for daytime highs. as those showers move through this afternoon and early evening. then tonight we're done with the rain. we keep that cloud cover and temperatures will settle into the 40s heading into thursday. now thursday and friday we're dry, but the weekend we're tracking several storms, one moving in here.
