[ cheers and applause ] ♪ a full day of rain and it's only the start. live doppler seven shows you what's left of this wednesday storm, and it's going to start looking quite familiar. good evening and thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. this is only just a sliver of an oncoming stretch of storms. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking what we are seeing tonight. after this already active day of weather. sandhya. >> yeah. ama, this is just a taste of what's to come, as you mentioned. so let's look at live doppler seven. this storm is still with us. we are seeing scattered showers across the region. i'm going to get you in closer to where it is raining

right now. in the east bay from emeryville to oakland seventh street getting pretty wet around orinda. also from san francisco, really heading into this from the sunset district to san bruno, sneath lane, pacifica. it is a light level one. there were lightning strikes off the california coast, including one just to the west of us, but it didn't make it over land. here's a look at futurecast and you will notice. still a few showers tomorrow morning as the commute begins. but it is going to be really isolated in nature as we take a look at those winds. still gusty 41 miles an hour on mount diablo. it's a one for through early tomorrow morning. scattered showers, slippery roads, gusty and the hills. there's a lot more rain coming as you look at the statewide picture through next wednesday. some areas will be up to a half a foot of rain and the concerns are flooding on roads, streams, trees downed, power outages. this is for the weekend. shallow landslides, potential for river flooding. but that doesn't come until early next week. i'll be back with a full look at the

forecast for your holiday weekend coming up. all right. >> sounds good. we'll check back. sandhya all the rain is going to california's reservoirs and they are doing quite well this winter. check this out. almost all of the state's reservoirs are above their historical average for this state. folsom is at 129% and oroville is at 131. locally the sonoma reservoir is at 109% of average. this is a trend state officials reported during their last snowpack measurement. all the rain was filling up the reservoirs. however, the snowpack was lagging because of all the wet storms we've seen. that remains the case with the state reporting the snowpack at 73% of normal, and you can track the storm with the same live doppler. seven sandhya uses. just search abc seven bay area in your device's app store to download it now. new details tonight after the deadly shooting during the championship parade for the kansas city chiefs and their super bowl win, one person is dead. the victim has been identified as lisa lopez galvan, a dj at a kansas city radio station. more than 20

others were hurt, including nearly a dozen children. investigators have detained three people and say they've recovered one gun. video shows paradegoers tackling as you see right there, one of the suspects, paul contreras, sat down with his daughter to describe what happened. it was probably 30s, but that 30s was the whole time he's fighting. >> he's fighting to you know, get up and i didn't know if he had another weapon. you know, get up and run away, you know? so that 30s felt like a couple minutes, but it wasn't. >> and president biden has released a lengthy statement which reads in part, for this joy to be turned to tragedy today in kansas city, cuts deep in the american soul. today's events should move us shock us, shame us into acting. reporter emily schmidt has more on the reaction coming in tonight, including from the chiefs. >> the thrill of being part of the crowd. >> super bowl champs nearly close enough to touch to quickly

became the fear of being part of the crowd when gunshots rang out . >> all of the sudden, people started crushing forward every body started running. there were screaming. we didn't know what was happening, but this day and age, when people run, you run the shooting happened at a rally outside of union station. >> kansas city chiefs players, the governors of missouri and kansas and hundreds of thousands of people were there, while the players and governors were safe, more than 20 people were injured in the shooting when the shooting started, i, like many others, ran and ran for safety. >> i saw a number of agencies, including the kansas city police department officers with guns drawn who were running towards danger. >> kansas city's police chief says there were more than 800 officers working the event. many helped people to safety, helped the injured. now an investigation into what sparked the shooting is underway. >> today we saw the police swarm a stairwell and then we heard another pop from there. and that's when i was like, okay, we're gone. >> i'm angry at what happened

today. >> police are asking witnesses for video, which may help shed light on what happened. in a post on social media, the team said it is saddened by the senseless act of violence. quarterback patrick mahomes expressed prayers for the city. >> parades, rallies. schools. movies it seems like almost nothing is safe and we had hundreds of law enforcement there working hard today, kansas city's mayor said he and to many more, quote, became part of a statistic of too many americans who have experienced a mass shooting. >> i'm emily schmidt, reporting. >> san francisco mayor london breed tweeted these words out just hours ago, saying, quote, on sunday, kansas city and san francisco shared a thrilling and joyous moment over an incredible football game. today what should have been a celebration is now heartbreaking. i've reached out to mayor lucas to offer our support and love during this difficult and tragic time. a 14 year old was arrested at his

north bay school today. just the latest in a string of recent safety incidents there. he's accused of making guns with a 3d printer. santa rosa police released a photo of the printer, a gun and ammunition officers found the materials and gang paraphernalia at the teen's home. he was not home during the search, so detectives went to montgomery high school and had a teacher escort the student out of classofficers say they found more gang paraphernalia inside his locker, but no guns. he's facing four charges and is now at juvenile hall to help take on these issues of gun violence. we have a list of vetted resources, both here locally and nationwide. just visit abc seven news.com/take action. we move now to the east bay, where the oakland unified school district is in some serious budget trouble. the deficit is at least $23 million for the next school year, and now it means some potentially damaging choices. abc seven news reporter tim johns is here. in studio as this discussion just

wrapped up minutes ago. tim. yeah ama. >> that's right. now ousd says their staff has been continuously working to try and find ways to restructure the district to address some of their financial problems. so far, they've come up with several possible options, many of them, though unpopular with the oakland teachers union and others in the district. now, at wednesday's board meeting, the district superintendent spoke about ucsd's commitment to balancing its budget, specifically, she talked about the need for fiscal response ability while also keeping up learning standards for students. >> the attachment d recommendations are focused on maintaining fiscal solvency, which is always a non-negotiable for any organization, and freeing up resources to invest in quality staff retention, which we talked about earlier and deeper school investments. >> the district says a significant pay raise to teachers declining enrollment, as well as the rising cost of transportation, health care and pensions have all contributed to the current financial situation in order to balance the budget,

ousd is considering several options that they say could potentially save tens of millions of dollars. some of those include moving and eventually getting rid of some school staff positions, reorganize housing and consolidating certain departments within the district, and reducing discretionary spending. these proposals don't sit well with many in the local teachers union, though, especially with the discussion of school closures in recent years. they say that any cuts would impact students the most, and that they believe ousd does have the money. >> we're well aware that this is a constant sort of theme from the district. they always claim doom and gloom, but for the past few years they have also ended the year with very healthy reserves. while the budget situation and potential proposals were discussed at tonight's school board meeting, they won't actually be voted on until the end of this month in the newsroom. >> tim johns, abc seven news tim, thank you. >> in the south bay, san jose police are giving away surveillance cameras to businesses to hopefully help

solve crimes. the initiative expands an existing program, letting businesses register their own cameras with the police department that capture crime. pilot program will also provide hard drives to small businesses for free. the program was launched at a strip mall in south san jose, where several shops and restaurants have been robbed. someone came in with a knife and uh- ones. >> thank god there was a customer that helped me. >> it is a proven fact when we have digital evidence, images of the crimes per se. those are prioritized to qualify for the free surveillance cameras, businesses must be in high crime areas and be willing to share video from their cameras with the police department. >> uber drivers protested today in san francisco as part of a national day of action to demand higher pay. about 100 drivers rallied at the potrero center lot this morning before caravanning over to uber headquarters. they claim uber is taking a greater share of their earnings without offering information on fare calculations. their demanding

officers found a substance that was confirmed as fentanyl. it's suspected all four died of drug overdoses, but officials are still waiting on autopsies and toxicology. now, if it is fentanyl, this is another reminder of how potent and deadly it can be, even when mixed with other drugs. >> it only takes two grains of salt of fentanyl to kill you. that's a lethal dose. so just a very, very small amount. >> three of the people were from south lake tahoe, and the fourth was from nevada. all of them were in their 30s. a brief demonstration shut down the golden gate bridge this morning, right in the middle of the morning commute, just before 8 a.m, about 50 people unrolled this banner across the southbound lanes. emergency

crews also closed northbound lanes for about 20 minutes while they cleared the demonstrators. as of tonight, there are no reports of any arrests. the action comes as efforts to broker a cease fire deal in gaza suffered a setback today. israel reportedly recalled its negotiating team. new developments two california lawmakers are hoping to crack down on popular electric bikes because of several safety concerns. a new bill was introduced that would prohibit anyone under the age of 12 from operating an e-bike. the law would also require e-bike riders without a driver's license to take an online safety course. it follows a similar effort by a marin county assembly member. the recent bill stem from concerns regarding the number and severity of accidents, though the state currently does not track data on e-bike crashes , love is in the air across the bay area and in all different forms, and from speed dating to the artificial intelligence side of romance, abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez shows us how people are writing their own love story. speed

certainly did bring us a nice little soaking for valentine's day. it is still just showery across most of the northern and central portion of california, and snowing in the sierra kentfield, picking up 7/10 of an inch. ben loman an inch of rain. san jose 1700s, a quarter of an inch in san francisco, almost that in napa 1500 oakland. concord nine hundredths of an inch. here's a look at what's ahead. so saturday through wednesday we have an active pattern. setting up a pair of storms are coming. their stronger heavy rain and gusty winds at times. high surf is what you can expect now as we go deeper into the weekend. minor to moderate flooding on roads and streams is going to be likely. possibility of downed trees, power outages and shallow landslides. so be aware of this. here's a look at the storm developing for your weekend on saturday. there's another one coming in on monday, so basically we're going to be into this wet pattern for several days in the sierra. this is going to mean 23in at kirkwood, ten inches at truckee. here in

the bay area we are looking at four inches of rain. by next wednesday in santa rosa, just about two inches there in san francisco. and over an inch in san jose. and livermore. speaking of, look at this. it's a beautiful view. winter in zephyr cove in the sierra. winter storm warning until 4 p.m. tomorrow, up to two feet above 6000ft. expecting the snow level to continue to come down. but with those gusty winds and chain controls right now, it's going to be difficult to get up there. so keep that in mind. 40s and 50s on your temperatures. here's a look at san jose and the forecast headlines. scattered showers overnight tomorrow afternoon through friday. you get that brief break from the rain and the holiday weekend. stronger storms are coming. there are two coming, actually. so it's a level one through early tomorrow morning. a light system, scattered showers, slippery roads, gusty in the hills. keep that in mind as you begin your commute tomorrow morning. still some wet roadways but very isolated in nature through about 7 a.m. and then this system is done by 9:00, 930. additional rainfall anywhere from nothing measurable

days after super bowl 58 lost the chief steve wilks is out as defensive coordinator. the 49 ers head coach kyle shanahan made the announcement today that wilks was relieved of his duties after just one season. now one of the bigger issues was wilks trying to adapt to the previous system ran by demeco ryans and robert saleh. the defense struggled in the playoffs, allowing nearly 150 rushing yards per game in the postseason. after a two week layoff, the sharks in winnipeg for their first game post nhl all star break fans in attendance, kaapo karkkainen made 38 saves. really needed 39 the first period redirect from morgan. barron gets in for the jets goal and team teal could not find the equalizer. anthony duclair had some great chances late in the second. this was reviewed and ruled a no goal in the sharks lose it one nil and hey, just see this. the warriors social team, a lovely post today in spirit of valentine's day. check out these warriors valentine's day cards. some very clever posts featuring all the players on the team here are a couple of my favorites. sports on abc seven. sponsored by river
