answers after a day of celebration in kansas city erupted into chaos. fans terrified, running for their lives as gunfire rang out at the chiefs' post-super bowl parade. a mother of two killed. here's abc's alex perez. >> reporter: tonight, panic and chaos in kansas city just as the victory celebration was ending. this was the moment that gunfire rang out. you could hear it in the crowd. our station, affiliate kmbc, broadcasting live when the shots were fired. >> shots were fired west of union station near the garage. multiple people were struck. >> reporter: hundreds of terrified fans running for their lives. >> all of a sudden people started crushing forward. everybody started running. there was screaming. we didn't know what was happening. but this day and age, when people run, you run. so i put my arms around her, we tried to push through so people wouldn't run on top of us. there was a woman crying, saying

something about somebody had been shot. >> reporter: this video appears to show bystanders tackling someone as they tried to run away. another video showing law enforcement tackling another person to the ground. at least one person killed. multiple others shot. law enforcement running through the crowd with weapons drawn, hopping over barricades. first responders treating victims on the ground, ferrying multiple patients on stretchers to waiting ambulances. at the hospital, medical workers rushing the injured into the building. back at the scene, snipers scanning the crowd from rooftops. >> we heard gunshots. but we thought they were fireworks. so half of us didn't really respond to it. but after, we did realize that a shooting took place, which was quite shocking. >> reporter: the crowd estimated to be about 800,000, packing the entire downtown all morning. the players holding a rally on the stage right in front of union station, had just left the stage when the gunfire began. >> all of a sudden, it sounded like fireworks, we're like, oh, okay. and my daughter yelled, get down, get down.

so, she grabbed me and pulled me down. >> i'm angry at what happened today. the people who came to this celebration should expect a safe environment. we had over 800 law enforcement officers, kansas city and other agencies, at the location to keep everyone safe. because of bad actors, which were very few, this tragedy occurred. even in the presence of uniformed law enforcement officers. >> reporter: tonight we're learning the name of that victim, kansas city radio station kffi saying one of their deejays, lisa lopes galvan, was killed at the parade. at least 28 people were injured, at least eight children were shot in all of this. classes were canceled today, so there were a lot of kids who came out to this rally. authorities say three people have been detained in connection with this shooting, and one

>> juju: welcome back. billy dee williams has always had a lot to say, and at 86, he's seen plenty. the veteran actor has written a memoir on his six decades in the spotlight and gave my "nightline" coanchor, byron pitts, an inside look. >> byron: welcome to "nightline," mr. billy dee williams. >> well, i appreciate this, thank you. >> byron: it's an honor to have you. i'd say, in describing your book, i described it to think colleague as a romantic walk through harlem, through hollywood, and through history. it's a wonderful book. you're 86 years young. >> 87 in april. >> byron: 87 in april. so i want to start looking at a clip at what one generation knows you primarily, from your

work in the "star wars" series, as lando calrissian. >> we would be honored if you would join us. >> i had no choice, they arrived right before you did. i'm sorry. >> i'm sorry too. >> byron: what was it like for you playing that role? as we both recall, it was a controversial role that you play, right? because in the first "star wars," there were no black people. they brought you in. and you've made clear you didn't play it as a black man? >> no, no. i try to stay away from the whole stereotypical perspective. i don't find anything interesting about it. it's no fun. i tend to view myself as part of the universe. they told me the character's name, calrissian.

i said, "that's an armenian name." and i said, "whoa, let me see what i can do with that." and then, of course, when i got the cape, that contributed to the development of the character. for me, that was errol flynn time. so i was trying to wribring a k of bigger than life romance to the character. but i just took this as an opportunity to take it into a place that i felt was much more interesting. >> byron: i would love to talk to you about a number of the romances that you discuss in the book. but this is television. so we'll leave that for the readers. >> the philanderer. it's very romantic to be a philanderer. >> byron: back then. >> absolutely. it's in my blood, really. i've always been sort of romanticist. >> you say that present tense. >> i'm still that way.

i'm too old to practice it and i really don't want to. >> byron: i ask this respectfully. do you appreciate what a big deal you are? how important your life is to so many people? >> yeah, of course i appreciate it. >> byron: yeah, because i -- >> i don't dwell on it. i mean -- i tend to look at myself as a walking absurdity. i chuckle about myself all the time. you know? >> byron: why so? >> i don't know, i just think i'm a silly boy. >> byron: a silly boy? >> yes. >> byron: i think about one of your great movies, it certainly resonated in my household as a child, "lady sings the blues." you worked with diana ross, which was an incredible movie to be told at the time, for the first time for many audiences they saw black love on the screen in this romantic character. what was it like working with her? >> oh, we had a great time. you know, like two little kids in a playpen. it was a wonderful experience.

>> byron: you came of age in a time when racism was harsh and painful in america. segregation was real in america. for all of your great success, as an actor, as an artist, some would argue that some success that you earned was not given because of the color of your skin. none of that has made you angry, bitter. why is that? >> the way i was raised, i suppose. we come from a family of really wonderful, proud people. i don't ever remember anybody feeling like a victim. and we were good, hard-working, working-class people. >> byron: yes. what's next for you? >> maybe this is just a new beginning for a new mountain to climb. >> byron: yeah, yeah. >> i don't know. i don't know. i'm waiting to see what happens. >> byron: it's been a real honor to speak with you. the book is called, "what have we here?"
