this is america this morning. >> good thursday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to you i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with that deadly mass shooting during what was supposed to be a huge celebration in kansas city, honoring the chiefs victory in the super bowl. >> instead, there was gunfire and chaos. it's the 48th mass shooting in america this year, and this is only the 46th day of the year. we're learning more about the victims, including young children. we're also hearing from the man seen on video helping tackle a man with a gun. this morning, sorrow and shock across kansas city, where the chiefs super bowl victory parade ended in a deadly mass shooting. >> it was a good celebration for the kansas city chiefs, and it just had to end the way it did because of a couple of bad apples. >> the gunfire erupting near union station, a transit and tourist hub near the main stage of the event. all of a sudden it sounded like fireworks and we're like, oh, okay. >> and then my daughter yelled, get down, get down! >> killed in the shooting, local radio dj and mother of two, lisa

lopez galvan, her station describing her as a beautiful person. police say 22 people were wounded, including several children, the youngest, just six years old. the children are expected to recover, but more than a dozen adults have ordered. described as life threatening injuries. there are a lot more people who are going to be forever impacted by by what happened here today. three people were taken into custody. police did not immediately release information about the suspects. >> i never think about it. i just a reaction. i didn't hesitate, it was just just do it. >> multiple people, including paul contreras, were seen here tackling and punching one man believed to be a suspect. >> one guy was hollering and saying, you know, stop him or catch him. you know, tackle him, whatever. and he's just just bailing, running and that's i'm tackling him. i see his weapon either fall out of his hand or out of his sleeve. so when i seen that hit the ground, i'm like, oh, you know, we got to take this guy down. >> casey filter is then seen picking up the man's gun.

>> i just saw it and just thought this. i needed to get it out of the way somewhere. >> the shooting began at the end of the celebration as the chiefs players were leaving the stage. quarterback patrick mahomes saying he's praying for kansas city and travis kelce saying he's heartbroken over the tragedy that took place. it's the second time in less than a year that gun violence has rocked a pro sports team celebration. i didn't know where she was at. >> i didn't know if she was safe and that's all i can think about. >> in june, a shooting in denver left ten people wounded as fans celebrated the nuggets first nba championship. the police said it was likely sparked by a drug deal. reacting to the shooting in kansas city, president biden reiterated his call for more action on gun control, saying the events should move us shock us, shame us into acting. >> we became part of a statistic of too many americans, those who have experienced or been part of, or connected to a mass shooting. that is something that i hope we all recognize is highly problems for all of us. police are working to determine a motive. >> the shooting broke out even

though more than 800 police officers were in the area. >> police near los angeles say a fellow student helped foil a teenager's school shooting plot. authorities say the 18 year old suspect was planning the attack at ontario christian high school, and is charged with attempted murder. they say they found weapons and ammunition inside his home, now to washington, and growing concern about a potential nuclear threat from russia in space. >> sources say that concern iran is behind a rare statement from a top lawmaker on capitol hill. abc's m wynne is here now with more m. good morning andrew. >> good morning. that top lawmaker is congressman mike turner. his colleagues describe being stunned that turner exposed a possible national security threat. new details about the cryptic warning from the chairman of the house intelligence committee about a possible new space threat from russia, congressman, what do you make of the firestorm that you've set off today? >> can you explain why you made this decision? >> congressman mike turner had no comment after he demanded the

white house declassify information about what he called a serious national security threat. two sources say that threat involves russia wanting to put a nuclear weapon in space, a goal it has not accomplished yet. i am a bit surprised that congressman turner came out publicly today. white house national security adviser jake sullivan appeared baffled by turner's decision to reveal the unspecified threat, as turner and other congressional leaders were scheduled to be briefed today on the issue. meanwhile, congressman seth moulton says he and turner were briefed aboutrillionussia's plans two years ago. >> he decided to take highly sensitive compart mented intelligence. >> that means that even if you have a very, you know, like a top secret clearance or something, you only have access to the intelligence if you have a need to know and he shared it with every member of congress, and indeed it only took a few hours for the details of this weapon system to come out. >> russia's supposed intention was not to drop the weapon onto the earth, but possibly use it against satellites. an

assessment last year by u.s. intelligence found russia was in pursuit of an array of non destructive and destructive counter space weapons, including jamming and cyberspace capabilities to try to target u.s. and allied satellites. russian president putin has taken issue with one specific group of satellites, spacex's starlink system, which has been used by ukraine to carry out attacks on russian troops. >> and liftoff. >> just yesterday, spacex launched a classified mission for the u.s. space force, sending national security related satellites into orbit and congressman mike turner has been urging lawmakers to pass more funding for ukraine to help in the fight against russia. but that funding remains held up in congress. rhiannon. all right. >> m thank you for that. israel has launched what appears to be the biggest wave of airstrikes on lebanon since the start of the war in gaza, fueling fears of a wider conflict. 11 civilians were reportedly killed . israel says the strikes were

in response to a hezbollah rocket attack that killed an israeli soldier. former president trump is expected to appear in new york courtroom today for a hearing in his hush money trial, set to begin next month. >> he's accused of falsifying business records in connection with payments to stormy daniels. he's pleaded not guilty. a hearing is also scheduled today for the da leading the georgia election interference case against trump. fani willis has acknowledged a personal relationship with a special prosecutor. trump says that's a conflict of interest. he wants her disqualified. >> there is a new legal battle over the effect the social media is having on our kids. this time , it's the biggest city in the country, suing the biggest tech companies, and we must take action to protect our children from harm. >> online. >> this morning, new york city is suing social media companies, claiming they're fueling a mental health crisis. the lawsuit targets tiktok, instagram, facebook, snapchat. and youtube, alleging the

companies designed their apps to get young people addicted. >> no one is talking about taking snatching away devices or snatching away platforms. we're talking about a fundamental set of rules and regulation. the city is demanding the companies change their behavior and help cover the cost of mental health treatments. >> those platforms now firing back the parent company of facebook and instagram saying we want teens to have safe, age appropriate experiences online. we have over 30 tools and features to support them and their parents tech executives. just last month testified before congress, where they were accused of failing to protect kids from bullying and exploitation. isn't the internet a dangerous place for children? >> i think it can be. >> yeah, there's both great things that people can do, and there are harms that we need to work toward. >> yeah, it's a dangerous place for children. >> a string of lawsuits similar to new york's have been filed around the country. they rarely proceed, due in part to a federal law dating back decades called section 230, which
