regional medical center of san jose is closing its trauma center services this year. health care employees there say it will affect lives the most severely injured patients will have to go to the trauma center, either at santa clara valley medical center or stanford hospital. >> some distance away. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes explains why regional's trauma center is closing and the impact it will have. >> disappointment this week from residents in east san jose after finding out that the nearest hospital is closing its trauma center. august 12th. >> not beneficial for the community because even though i don't know anyone who has gone there or has used it, i think a resource like that is very beneficial. >> in a statement tuesday, regional medical center cited a decline in the use of its level two trauma center services over the last several years for the same reasons, they also plan to close its stemi program, which addresses emergencies like heart attacks. >> that's disappointing because it's i mean, it's supposed to be for the people, but they're closing it down because of the business. >> in its statement, the hospital said, quote, we will continue to provide emergency care services to all patients. these changes will affect a

small number of our colleagues. we are working with each impacted individual to support next steps for their careers based on their skills, training and experience. the regional medical center said that they have seen a decline in services. county officials, who operate one of the two remaining trauma centers in the south bay, are concerned for east san jose. >> you're anticipating that the health s system, county health system is for that burden to fall upon us because we are the only other level one trauma hospital or trauma hospital at adjacent to that community in santa clara county, at the city level. >> san jose mayor matt mehan said that he's glad that regional medical center has also announced plans to expand emergency room beds, but is disappointed that the trauma center is closing. we don't ever want to see like saving medical services cut, particularly in our lower income neighborhoods. >> the fact that east side san jose will have to travel farther to get to a trauma center is concerning. >> right now, county officials say the focus is on solutions and how to utilize other county run hospitals.

>> we have o'connor hospital, um, and as a system, we will be looking at ways in which we can leverage the system to ensure that critical services for the community, primarily in that area, can be sustained at some level. but there is a lot more to be understood as we move forward in the coming months. >> in san jose, zach fuentes, abc seven news business is in oakland's chinatown. >> hope to have the good fortune of an increase in business during the upcoming lunar new year parade. today, business owners got to voice their concerns over crime and safety to top law enforcement officials and a state lawmaker. abc seven news reporter anser hassan was there. >> a dragon procession guided california state assembly member mia bonta through chinatown on her visit ahead of sunday's lunar new year parade. it's important for everybody to know that the state is pulling for them, pulling for oakland and for the aapi community to know that we're standing with them. bonta represents oakland and knows the challenges chinatown has faced. thursday's visit was

the alameda county district attorney and sheriff's office. >> community leaders hope the interaction with small businesses will highlight first hand the needs on the ground and hopefully direct more resources toward solutions, business reimbursement for crime stricken business owners who got their business broken into, uh, glasses, shattered reimbursement for costs that they lost from all this, uh, crime that happened around them, and encourage people to come celebrate at sunday's parade in oakland, anser hassan. abc seven news. and as assembly member, bonta toured oakland's chinatown. >> her husband, california attorney general rob bonta, announced the seizure of hundreds of illegal weapons and ammunition in richmond. the cash was found during a search to retrieve weapons from someone who's barred from legally owning them. bonta says the suspects stockpile included assault rifles, grenades and approximately. 1 million rounds of ammunition. in 2006, california became the first

state to establish the armed and prohibited persons system, which tracks firearm owners who are prohibited from owning weapons. it is not clear why the suspect in this case is prohibited from owning weapons. >> investigators are still trying to figure out what caused a group of students to get sick. today at vintage high school in napa, 25 students complained about nausea, headaches and fatigue inside the school choir room this morning. six had to be taken to hospitals. the illnesses led to a shelter in place order on campus for part of the school day, but the cause remains a mystery. p-g-and-e's didn't find any gas leaks in the choir room, and investigators say there were no signs of drug use on campus. >> we're getting a short break. as you know from the rain today, here's a live look outside now. pretty nice day, but another round of stormy weather is on the way. an abc seven news meteorologist, sanjay patel, is here to let us know. sandy, when the rain will return this weekend. >> dan. and timing is everything as you know. so take advantage of this break. let's take a look at live doppler seven and you will see that next storm just

wound up over the pacific. it is a level two. the following storm is also a level two which is coming in late sunday night into monday. let's time this out for you. the first one tomorrow night. clouds are gathering and we may see a few showers late at night, but it's really saturday morning that the storm gets going. it starts to spread rain across the entire region by the afternoon, becoming heavier at times. it is a two. as i mentioned, rain will be heavy at times. wind gusts 20 to 40 plus miles an hour. brief and dangerous surf is expected. that's not the only storm. we have more storms lined up in the pacific, and as we take a look at our rain chances really right on through next wednesday day, elevated rain chances, we are looking at rainfall that is going to add up in inches between saturday and wednesday. looking at over a half a foot of rain in ben lomond and also parts of the north bay. most lower elevations will pick up between an inch to three inches of rain. this does mean we have potential for some issues, and the issues include downpours,

gusty winds, rough surf with those pair of storms, flooding on the roads, streams, creeks, possibility of downed trees and outages, and a chance of river flooding. russian river at guerneville and the san lorenzo river at big trees early next week, i'll be back with a full look at the forecast coming up. >> all right. thank you. sandhya. happening today in the north bay. they are getting ready before the storm. the area already experienced damaging flooding this year. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has a look at how people in guerneville got a helping hand today. >> once you do that, it secures that fold. and we got air trapped in there. see that? these air tight, waterproof emergency go bags were free for the taking at this pop up event hosted by sonoma county fire district. >> these are really good. i was i was spreading the word. >> these go bags, dry bags will keep their items dry and right if they have to evacuate or if it's super stormy inside each pack. we're also giving you a disaster preparedness checklist. >> karen hancock says the timing of this giveaway is no coincidence. back to back storms are heading to the bay area.

might be coming fairly soon. i think it's just going to be about showing your love of oakland and showing your love of community. enter the new minor league team starting their first season. founders brian carmel and paul friedman pride themselves on keeping pro baseball in a city. feeling abandoned by the a's. >> the whole vibe of this is we want to show the world what oaklanders can do when we come together, right? we think this is one of the we definitely think this is the best baseball community in the world, but one of the best communities in the world. >> and what better way to cement yourself as an oakland team than to play here at historic raymond park? and it's best days are still ahead. the team posted this video to social media. it was established as a park in 1896. in the 1940s, a group of shipping workers, the a 26 boilermakers, called it home. in the 1960s, baseball greats rounded the diamond ballers are putting 1.6 million into this park. that money is going to be used for a new scoreboard, a new scouting system and new stands. but if you ask them, it's not just about renovating the park, it's about revitalizing this entire community. >> we want this to be kind of

like a festival around a baseball field. we're going to throw 48 festivals around the baseball field next year, and we're going to provide a canvas for the oakland fans to paint on. and we think it's going to be fun, and we think we're going to win. and everybody wants to see winning baseball that investment needs to be approved by the city council. >> but council member fife is supporting this project. raymond park is on wood street in west oakland. the last few years it was next to one of the largest homeless encampments in the bay area. the city is now building housing on the encampment and with the park being upgraded, the founders say this whole area will once again be an oakland treasure. >> these two just feel like it belongs to everybody. it needs to feel hella oakland. that's you know, part of our ethos and also embracing the space, embracing the space. >> just like they did decades ago in oakland. ryan curry, abc seven news. san. francisco international airport is being awarded $31 million in federal support from the biden administration. >> it's part of president biden's new infrastructure law. the funding will be used for upgrades to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system inside sfo's

international terminal. the money comes from a pool of about $970 million, which is being distributed for improvements at more than 100 airports across the country in a few weeks. the board that oversees the golden gate bridge will consider raising vehicle tolls starting in july. now, assemblyman phil tang is introducing a bill to ban tolls on pedestrians or cyclists on the golden gate bridge and all other bridges in california. advocates say only cars and trucks should pay tolls because of the wear and tear they cause to roads and bridges. >> but walking and biking, on the other hand, cause almost nowhere to the infrastructure and keep our air clean. this bill should be a model of how we share the real costs of the modes that we choose to get around. >> the golden gate bridge has charged pedestrian tolls in the past, from its opening in 1937 to 1970. pedestrians were paid at a turnstile to walk on the bridge. >> all right, if you're traveling by bart, this president's day weekend, you might want to budget some extra time because of some upcoming

beautiful from tahoe as well. we're seeing snow covered mountains, which is what you want to see tomorrow is your best day to travel. mostly cloudy, mid 40s chance of rain and snow on saturday. partly cloudy on sunday and then president's day. we are expecting heavy snow and rain. breezy conditions. so this is the time period where you may want to hold off on travel. all right. let's talk about this first storm that's going to start the rain and snow. it is wound up here in the pacific a classic storm. we have another storm developing here for your monday. so when all is said and done, those two storms will be level twos stronger than the one that came through here yesterday. right now we have a lot of cloud cover overhead temperatures are in the 50s and 60s. it was a pretty mild day today. here's a lovely view from emeryville. camera tomorrow mostly cloudy and mild. saturday that levels two. storm arrives and then sunday night through wednesday we have another potent storm. it's a level two as well. on monday we are expecting the potential for thunderstorms. so level two for saturday. it's a moderate strength storm on our

storm impact scale. rain will be heavy at times. wind gusts 20 to 40 plus miles an hour and do expect rough and dangerous surf, which is why that high surf advisory goes up this weekend. current wave heights 4 to 11ft. but those breakers are going to be 18 to 22ft. up to 28. in those favored locations. so just be careful out there tomorrow night, few showers begin to develop along the coastline at 11 p.m, but it's really saturday when you start to see rain moving in with that storm. it's widespread. it's moderate to heavy at times. at 10 a.m. noontime as well. and then when you start to see the oranges and the yellows, that's the downpours that we're looking at. 4 p.m. saturday afternoon. if you do have travel plans, plan accordingly. it turns over to scattered showers late saturday night into early sunday morning before that next storm comes in sunday night into monday. your saturday storm anywhere from 2/10 in livermore up to over an inch in the santa cruz mountains and in the wettest north bay locations. winds will be gusting 25 to 30 miles an hour. saturday morning, topping that over the

higher terrain. we'll get even gustier and along the coastline so you could see some trees going down. possibility of a few outages as well. winter weather advisory for the sierra saturday morning to sunday morning, 4 to 8in above 6000, up to a foot at the higher elevations. and then it becomes a winter storm watch. so from an advisory to a watch, sunday afternoon through wednesday morning, it's going to be quite a stretch with up to four feet for the peaks. those wind gusts will make it difficult to impossible to travel. here is the storm for sunday. it gets in here sunday night. it sticks around monday. stormy to start and then it's raining all day. and then tuesday it's still going. this storm doesn't want to leave. it's going to park itself. wednesday you're still dealing with the wet weather. and then finally it moves on out of here. certainly is good for obviously our water supply to get the sierra snow pack built up 40s and 50s on those temperatures in the morning tomorrow afternoon. it's going to be a mild, mostly cloudy day with 50s and 60s. accuweather, seven-day forecast. you get one more day to enjoy
