a crystal clear night making way for serious storms. you are looking live at our network of cameras spread across the bay area. we are counting down as things are going to look much different this weekend. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. here we go again. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking the incoming storms. sandhya we're looking at several days of rain. yeah it's a pair of storms that we're talking about and it is going to stretch over days. >> so dan and let's take a look at live doppler seven right now. good evening everyone. it is a

level two storm which is stronger than what came through yesterday. let's look at where the rain is falling right now. up to our north we're seeing a few light showers as they get here, but not immediately. so tomorrow night they'll be moving in by saturday morning you start to see some light to moderate rain. it picks up in intensity by 3 p.m. you see those downpours at times continuing at 5 p.m. this is a level two. as i mentioned, rain heavy at times for saturday, wind gusts 20 to 40 plus miles an hour. rough and dangerous surf. and that's not the only storm. there's a second storm that is also a level two due in here. on presidents day. your rain chances you can see they're elevated really right on through the middle of next week. rainfall around the state. we're going to be seeing some heavy rain across, especially northern and central portion of california, which includes us upwards of a half a foot of rain when all is said and done by the middle of next week, i'll be back to let you know exactly how much rain we're talking about, and the timeline for your

weekend coming up. ama. >> all right, sounds good. thank you, sandhya, and let's go out to our santa cruz camera. expected to be one of those weather hot spots this weekend, especially with last year's winter and all the power outages of last week, it makes preparing for this incoming storm all the more important. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez shows us how some in the south bay are getting ready. >> this is where the fir tree fell, and this is all the debris . it fell all the way across the far arm. >> boulder creek resident sandra hunt is still cleaning up from an intense windstorm earlier this month. >> all of our internet and everything has been not great. >> in december, hunt gave us a virtual tour of her farm and the measures she took to prevent flooding. now hunt can see all the drainage she installed is paying off. this is where all the water ends up and we've got several trenches to drain that off, hunt said. the one positive about this winter versus last year is the breaks in between storm systems. gives her time to

make repairs, so we get a couple of days things dry out. >> um, and then we can we have a chance to come up and actually do some work where it's not just complete flooding along the coast. >> major repair work is still underway from last year's storm damage. this is a snapshot of work at the retaining wall off west cliff drive in santa cruz. but the pauses in between storms have helped gradually build our water supply. >> when you can fill up the reservoirs without seeing widespread flooding, that's a great thing. >> santa clara valley water oversees ten reservoirs. the nine that are up and operating are at 125% average for this time. of the year. that average excludes the county's largest reservoir that is currently being drained for earthquake repairs until 2032, valley water says it won't be until this spring, when we know how water totals will be for the year. >> we're looking at more storms. we're looking at that snowpack to improve greatly, and so we don't really count our water supply and see where we're at for the for the upcoming year. until really the april 1st

snowpack survey in the south bay, lauren martinez, abc seven news and you can stay on top of these storms anytime, m hour by hour with our live doppler seven radar. >> just search abc seven bay area in your device's app store to download it now. >> in the north bay tonight, investigators are stumped. they're still trying to figure out what caused more than two dozen students to get sick today at vintage high school in napa. the handful of students who had to go to the hospital are at least home now. abc seven news reporter j.r stone is in napa tonight looking into what happened. >> fire crews could be seen thursday outside a vintage high school in napa. after more than two dozen students got sick there. eliana calderon is a senior at the school who spoke with one of at least six students who were taken to the hospital. >> all she said that a couple students had passed out and one was throwing up. our teacher was telling us about how the air isn't toxic or dangerous. >> the district says students

were in first period choir class when they began feeling sick. school employees and firefighters say that p-g-and-e's confirmed to them that no gas or carbon monoxide was found. in later tests, meaning what caused those students to get sick is still unknown. that is concerning to eliana, who had to leave her classroom through the theater to avoid the choir room. >> some of my own friends, you know, are trying not to go to school tomorrow and possibly, you know, couple days going forward next week. and, you know, even my family says that maybe i shouldn't go to school either. >> the school district says that napa fire and napa police have both confirmed to them that the school is safe for staff and students. we didn't find anything. >> no readings on our monitors. p-g-and-e's found nothing either , so we're still at a loss as to what caused this today. >> it was just really alarming because, you know, we would think that there wasn't anything going on and we haven't seen anything like suspicious or, you know, smelled or heard anything. i've been in contact with

district reps who tell me that additional tests in the school will be done early friday before school starts, and that extra staff will be on hand throughout the day in napa. >> j.r. stone, abc seven news some new developments with the barriers along capp street in san francisco that were put up to stop alleged sex work. >> apparently, it has moved to a new street. our media partners with the san francisco standard report residents a couple blocks over on shotwell street have seen an increase in activity. it varies from reports of car crashes and fights to open solicitation. the abc seven news i-team covered the problem and subsequent crackdown on capp street. the city is looking into a permanent solution to try to block off that street to through traffic. it was just a couple months ago when protesters paralyzed traffic on the bay bridge, pushing back against the war in gaza. >> they happen from time to time in california. and tonight a state lawmaker wants to put a stop to it. abc seven news reporter tim john spoke to that

assemblywoman. he has more on this proposal to add new penalties for protesters from the blocking of the bay bridge during last year's apec summit to wednesday morning shutdown of the golden gate bridge. >> over the past several months, the bay area has seen numerous protests that have blocked traffic and interrupted vital freeways. >> we are all sick and tired of that, assembly member kate sanchez is trying to change that, sanchez represents the state's 71st district down in orange county. >> on thursday, she introduced a bill that would double penalties for protesters purposefully obstructing the flow of traffic in any way that would prevent emergency vehicles from passing. >> the protesters are trying to score a cheap political point or advance an agenda and quite honestly, that can have real world devastating consequences. >> sanchez cites examples like during last november's apec summit, when around 80 demonstrators shut down traffic on the bay bridge for several hours. that backup delaying the transport of transplant organs to ucsf. >> the response time is so important and critical for emergency vehicles in these in

these moments, which is the intent of the bill, we need to start taking these lawbreakers very seriously. >> some of those bay bridge protesters are facing more than just fines with the san francisco district attorney filing charges that could mean jail time. in recent weeks, there have been several demonstrations demanding jenkins drop those charges. santa clara university law professor margaret russell says there's a balance between free speech and safety. >> freedom of speech should be available equally, regardless of political viewpoint or subject matter. however, it can be subject to what are called time, place and manner regulations. >> sanchez's bill is now waiting to be heard in committee, but she says she's confident it will ultimately pass. >> our community has responded very well, our law enforcement, but i will say most of the response has been this bill doesn't go far enough because when you receive more for a speeding ticket than you do obstructing traffic for the flow of emergency vehicles, that's a real problem in san francisco.

>> tim johns, abc seven news happening now the fbi is offering a $25,000 reward to help capture a suspect linked to a 2012 murder in fairfield. >> mario guadalupe vasquez was charged with homicide in 2013 after allegedly killing a man in an attempted robbery. investigators say vasquez fled prosecution, and they believe he may now be hiding in mexico. he should, they say, be considered armed and dangerous. san clara county is losing one of its trauma centers. >> the operators of regional medical center in east san jose have decided to close its level two trauma center on august 12. it's also closing its stemi program, which treats some of the most seve heart attacks . both those services are offered at santa clara valley medical center, but that is eight miles away. regional medical center says it made the decision after seeing a decline in use over the last few years, closely followed news out of atlanta tonight, the fulton county district attorney, fani willis, will be back on the

witness stand tomorrow. she made a surprise move today and testified in court, and it led to often sharp exchanges. willis office is prosecuting the election interference case in georgia against former president donald trump today, willis testified in defense of her own conduct and relationship with the special prosecutor. she hired, nathan wade, the defense is arguing willis and her office should therefore be disqualified from the trump case, citing a conflict of interest. >> if you're confused, you think i'm on trial. these people are on trial for trying to steal an election in 2020. it is a lot. it is a lot. and it's highly offensive when they try to implicate that you slept with somebody the first day you met with them. and i take exception to it. wade also testified today. >> the two say their relationship ended last summer, building a better bay area is what we focus on every day here at abc seven news, and tonight we want to spend some time highlighting some of those breakthroughs. >> we're in oakland today as businesses in chinatown got a visit from local law enforcement

and a state lawmaker ahead of this weekend's lunar new year parade for some, it was an opportunity to discuss crime and safety and ask for more help. >> a lot of people, when they heard about oakland, they kind of scared to come by. so that's why we need the police support and the mayor's support and all the uh- representative support. >> let me get something for you. >> some of the solutions businesses are proposing include reimbursement for burglaries and robberies, along with a stronger police presence. the parade is on sunday and starts at wilma chan park. that's at madison and ninth streets, right near the lake merritt bart station. it is supposed to start at 11 in the morning and go until 1:00 in the afternoon. >> our next abc seven news building a better bay area breakthrough, takes us to san francisco. today we checked up on a city program helping new businesses get off the ground by waiving certain first year fees. the city will now be extending the program for another year.

about what we're expecting. bay area is going to see an active pattern pair of strong storms stronger than what went through yesterday. they're level twos saturday and monday. downpour caused gusty winds and rough surf coming with both storms flooding on the roadways, streams, creeks possibly trees down, outages. this is more as we head towards saturday night, going through really monday of next week. chance of river flooding next week for the russian and san lorenzo rivers. it's a 25 to 35% chance. but keep that in mind. here is the storm system that is winding up in the pacific. you can see that moisture trail stretching all the way back towards the hawaiian islands. there's another storm developing right behind it, coming in on president's day. so right now we have a lot of cloud cover on live doppler seven, but it is dry. we had isolated showers this morning, as we had expected, mainly in the north bay and santa cruz mountains. 40 and 50 on your temperatures right now, by the way, san jose got up into the upper 60s today.

i mean, hard to believe it's still winter, but you'll be reminded. don't worry. roof camera quiet view tomorrow. mostly cloudy and mild. saturday level two storm arrives and sunday night through wednesday. another potent storm is coming our way. there's a possibility of thunderstorms on monday. saturday's system is a two. it's a moderate strength storm. rain will be heavy at times. wind gusts 20 to 40 plus miles an hour. rough and dangerous surf coming, which is why that high surf advisory will go up for the weekend. large breakers 18 to 22ft, up to 28in, favored locations. it is going to be dangerous to swim or surf, so i would just stay out of the water if you can. 1130 tomorrow night a couple of isolated showers begin to develop, but it's really saturday morning that the rain starts to get going and it will start to spread at 11 a.m. it becomes heavier as we head towards the afternoon. some pockets of downpours. this goes on even at 5:00 saturday night and then switching over to less widespread, just scattered showers. lighter showers as well. late saturday night going

into early sunday. your rainfall projections for saturday. highest totals over an inch in the north bay. most of the rest of you looking at anywhere from about 1600 to a third of an inch excess in the santa cruz mountains. the winds will come up. they will get gustier along the coast and hills by noontime, close to 40 miles an hour, topping that by 2 p.m. in the afternoon. and those gusty winds remain with us on saturday. so secure any loose objects you have. winter storm a winter weather advisory is going up saturday morning to sunday morning, up to a foot for the peaks. it is going to be snowing above 6000ft. then it becomes a winter storm. watch sunday afternoon to wednesday morning. we're talking about up to four feet over the peaks with those gusty winds, it's going to be difficult to get up there. but look at these snow totals. great for our water supply. 68in at kirkwood, 60 at donner. and really that second storm coming in sunday, you just see some morning showers sunday night. it gets going and it continues monday morning. the commute is going to be stormy. and then
