7:04 am
already heavily saturated areas. that's what's going to be concerning here because this storm is expected to go ahead and drench some of those same areas, and when we're looking at that, this area already with this wet soil, that is a threat that we can see even more flooding and even more possible landslides. we're definitely going to be watching the threat because janai, really, at some point, this wet soil just can't take much more. janai? >> janai: the surf behind you, melissa. we see that already, this morning, and thank you so much. and meteorologist brittany bell is here with details on the forecast for that storm as it moves in. good morning to you, brittany. >> brittany: good morning to you too. the ground already so saturated after that first round drawing up to 2 to 3 inches of rain. across the higher elevations round two right around the corner, this one even stronger. that's why we have flood watches, basically extending all throughout the entire coastline and gusty winds up to 50 to 60 miles per hour. let's look at the timing. that fire hose of moisture that

7:08 am
still a lot of questions, lama. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, janai. that's right. according to alexei navalny's team, they say this it wasn't a death they believe the anti-corruption campaigner was murdered and the russian authorities are covering their trace. that's why they say they are not releasing his body to his family. navalny's mother and lawyer traveled to the prison in a remote area in the arctic on saturday. they were told his body will be handed over once a post-mortem examination had been completed which could let them hold him for a month. meanwhile, his supporters continue to bravely defy authorities, holding vigils, laying flowers at over 140 russian cities and also around the world and among them, the u.s. ambassador to russia posting on social media, saying, our hearts to go out to his family, friends, and supporters. his strength is an inspiration. we honor his memory. now, an independent russian human rights group, say more than 400 people have been arrested over the last couple of days, but navalny's supporters
7:09 am
say they won't give up. gio. >> all right, lama, thank you. we'll stay on this topic with jonathan karl who will be hosting abc's "this week" later this morning. jon, good morning to you. let's stay on russia here. you already have the war in ukraine and then you have claims about russia's space weapons. so, what kind of pressure is navalny's death putting on the white house right now? >> jonathan: well, you know, nearly three years ago president biden said that if navalny were to die in prison, there would be devastating consequences for vladimir putin and for russia. so certainly some pressure on biden. you heard it from biden. he placed the blame squarely on putin. where this really affects the process going forward, gio, is the president is pushing very hard to get ukraine aid -- to get congress to allocate money to continue to help fund ukraine in its war against russia. that is now completely deadlocked on capitol hill. they are hoping that this will be a wakeup call -- both of those developments you mentioned, will be a wakeup call to republicans in congress. >> gio: absolutely. let's turn to the presidential campaign, jon.
7:10 am
you have an exclusive this morning with republican nikki haley. south carolina, of course, that's her home state, but she's trailing in polls a week away from the primary. what are the stakes for her? >> jonathan: look. i mean, this is the state that she served as governor. this is her home state. she hasn't -- she didn't win in new hampshire. she didn't win in iowa. she didn't win in nevada. she's got to win somewhere, so we'll be talking to her about those stakes. it's a tough climb. trump is very popular in her home state, but i also want to, you know, talk to her about the latest legal action against trump. i think there's, you know, she had actually defended trump in a way, attacking the prosecutors during those criminal indictments earlier last year, so now the question is what is she going to be saying about trump? she has certainly turned up the heat on him. the question is whether or not it will be too late. >> gio: let's talk about that legal setback. former president trump facing a $355 million court judgment. still looking at four criminal trials. how will he balance that from
7:11 am
the courtroom to the campaign trail? >> jonathan: well, really, i think what you're seeing is it's not so much balancing it, but he is turning the courtroom into essentially a campaign platform. he is campaigning as a victim. he had a rally just yesterday, just last night and he said, they're really coming after you. i'm just standing in the way. that's essentially his message. so he's going to be using every charge against him, every ruling against him as evidence that the so-called deep state is out to get him, and so far actually, many of his supporters seem to be -- it's a message that's resonating with them. >> gio: and one thing's for sure. this is something we've never seen before. all right, jon, thank you so much for that. jon has a big show coming up on abc's "this week." he's got that exclusive with republican presidential candidate nikki haley about her campaign against donald trump after his latest legal setback. plus, jon's exclusive interview with influential radio host charlamagne tha god about the

from colorado now to virginia, an investigation into a deadly houe explosion that took the life of a firefighter and injured 13 other people. abc's jay o'brien joins us live from sterling, virginia, with what authorities are saying about that volunteer who died. good morning, jay. >> reporter: janai, good morning. we're learning the identity of that firefighter killed here in what fire officials describe as a catastrophic explosion. his name was trevor brown. he was 45 years old. he's survived by a wife and three kids. he was a volunteer firefighter. arrangements currently being made this morning for his funeral. he was one of those firefighters that rushed into that home when a 500-gallon underground propane tank sprung a leak and the houe then exploded while the firefighters were inside. the fire chief calling it a chaotic scene as first responders rushed in to rescue the others that were trapped.
7:15 am
ten other firefighters were injured and last we heard at least four are still in the hospital this morning. meantime, there's an urgent investigation to figure out what caused that leaking propane tank to ignite. we've seen federal investigators and fire officials here on the scene this morning. the homeowner was able to get out before the explosion. the fire chief saying that her life was saved because she smelled gas and called 911. gio? >> gio: just incredibly brave firefighters. thank you so much, jay, for that story. and we're going to turn to an urgent search now continuing in texas for an 11-year-old girl missing since thursday. an amber alert was issued after audrii cunningham apparently never made it onto her school bus in livingston, about an hour north of houston. on saturday, police announced that they have a person of interest in custody and suspect foul play. whit? >> whit: services are set to resume today at joel osteen's megachurch in houston. one week ago, a woman opened fire during afternoon services at lakewood church. she was killed by a law enforcement officer on the scene.

the gunfire left her 7-year-old child in critical condition and another man injured. televangelist and pastor joel osteen has said that he will speak to the media about the shooting for the first time after today's services. let's turn now and get another check of the weather. brittany bell here in new york, and we're looking at snow. utah over here. i used to live there. >> brittany: really? >> whit: that's where i used to shred the gnar on my snowboard. >> brittany: i need video proof of that. >> whit: it's on the internet somewhere. >> brittany: i want to show you some video of people actually excited to see some snow in brighton, utah. this video was taken on friday. this is where 16 inches of snow fell. all of the skiers in the background really enjoying seeing that fresh powder. more snow falling this morning near salt lake city extending into idaho. snowfall totals through wednesday for brighton all the way toward jackson, ranging from
