conditions in tahoe. just how much more snow they expect in the sierra. abc seven news at five starts right now. can see, a sunny start, but this time lapse video from atop mount tam shows just how quickly the weather can change as our latest storm rumbles into the bay area. thanks for joining us, everybody. i'm dionne lim. be prepared for pounding rain and whipping winds. we start now with live team coverage of the storm. you see it on live doppler seven in the center. there cornell bernard has a look at some of the weather related closures. but first we get to abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian with more on the timeline. spencer okay, tell us the story right now. >> this storm has arrived. we have widespread rainfall it's spreading so rapidly now that we all in the bay area are

rain all day. in fact, just standing upright has been kind of challenging for me today. and let's talk about the surf. it is super high. as you can see the pacific is definitely churning tonight as the next storm moves in. wow, look at the swell building up there that's going to probably hit 15 20ft tonight. and her husband rama are watching big waves crashing at the pacifica pier. >> oh my goodness gracious. look at that. jesus >> the surf is churning up ahead of the next storm. moving into the bay area. >> oh, it's magnificent. >> it's exhilarating to see this, this high swells. >> it's scary too. i was i feel dizzy when i was watching the waves because they keep moving. >> the city is closing the pier to the public as a safety precaution due to high waves. action. neighbors on beach boulevard are sandbagging their properties to keep seawater out.

stormy conditions have prompted the closure of seven parks in san mateo county, including san pedro valley park in pacifica. officials are concerned about trees toppling well for safety reasons. >> it's a good thing today actually is less windy than yesterday. so we did come into the park and take a walk, but we turned around at a specific time in the north bay. >> this big tree fell saturday in downtown santa rosa on fourth street, knocking out power to some businesses and several roads in sonoma county near the russian river saw weekend flooding firstrillionesponders say they are ready for more of the same. >> we've spent the last several days just outreaching to our community, making sure they know the potential of another round of rain. the effects of it like we saw earlier in the month with the potential for power outages, some nuisance flooding, um, as well as just slow traffic conditions. look at that. >> it's building up. look. oh my god. >> back in pacifica, the tinetti

family are being wowed by the power of the elements. >> this is just awesome. it's the beauty of the bay area, isn't it? >> first responders are asking folks to stay off the beach during the storm. that includes cliffs and rocks and swimmers and surfers. that warning goes out to you too, because rip currents are certainly possible during this storm. be safe everybody. we're live in pacifica, cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> yeah, we cannot stress that enough. all right, cornell, many thanks to you once again. let's get back to spencer in the weather center, talking about more of that timeline. and really where we are going to see the maximum impact. right? >> okay, dion. well, cornell is certainly right about those waves and those rip currents. we've got a high surf advisory in effect for the entire bay area right now. and as you look at live doppler seven, you can see the rain is rapidly spreading across the entire region. although started two hours ago up in the north bay. but now we're all getting a little taste of this storm. and

this is what it looks like on the satellite image. a tightly wound storm that's kicking out wave after wave of rainfall onshore into the bay area, along with powerful wind gusts. so let's take a look at the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale. this is a level two storm for tonight, and at least part of tomorrow we can expect periods of moderate to heavy rainfall, wind gusts ranging from 25 to nearly 50mph, and of course, flooding is a possibility. here's the forecast animation starting at 6 p.m. notice how strong the rain, how heavy the rain is between now and midnight. it just doesn't let up. it won't let up, i should say. then overnight, going into the early morning hours, a little bit of a break develops. just before the morning commute starts around 4 a.m. or so, but then that'll be followed quickly by about 7 a.m. with wave after wave of scattered showers and heavy downpours, and still strong, gusty winds throughout the day. so as a result of all of the elements i've just described, we have a wind advisory in effect until 4 a.m. tuesday. we have a flood watch in effect for the

entire bay area until wednesday morning. and of course, there's that high surf advisory i mentioned that's in effect until tuesday morning as well, with the possibility of dangerous rip currents. and of course, swimming and surfing are out. i'll have the full accuweather 70 forecast a little bit later. dionne. >> okay, sounds good. spencer. thank you. moving on to other news now, police are investigating whether slick roads played a role in a deadly crash. it all happened just after midnight on highway 237, in lafayette. one person died after slamming into a parked rv. the woman, who lives in that rv was not hurt, but her vehicle was damaged. >> a mad but then my heart also goes out to her family and everything. >> you know, because they're going to get the news that, you know their dog is dead or their mom's dead, you know, or wife or something. you know, and so it shook me up. >> reports show the car went up in flames after it traveled off the highway into the rv, then slammed into a chain link fence. and a reminder you can get the

of oakland, i would just estimate that they will be receiving more cargo than the east coast, and therefore that would be uh- good news for port of oakland supply chain management company flexport says almost 25% of global shipping capacity is, or will be diverted from the red sea, adding thousands of miles and a week or two to trips now to tragedy. in minnesota. >> on this sunday, two police officers and a firefighter or paramedic were shot and killed after an hours long standoff following a domestic abuse call. another police sergeant was also wounded, but is expected to survive. the horror unfolded at a home in the twin cities suburb of burnsville overnight. the gunman barricaded himself inside the home with a woman and seven children. police say he opened fire on two officers. then he shot the paramedic who ran to help the downed victims. >> i need that ambulance to 33rd avenue and i need two additional

ambulances. the dead were identified as officers paul m strand and matthew ruge, both 27 years old, and 40 year old firefighter paramedic adam finseth. >> the gunman was later found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. an update now on the operation to free a stuck fishing boat near bodega bay. after a week long effort, the us coast guard determined that the 57 ton vessel cannot be moved because it's simply too heavy, loaded down with water and sand. the press democrat reports salvage crews will need to take the boat apart instead, with powerful waves expected, it's unlikely operations will begin immediately. the delay could increase the risk of the ocean breaking that boat apart. a lunar new year serenade, i should say, as people in the east bay came together in celebration. take a listen. the year of the dragon was

ushered in with some great fanfare in oakland's chinatown. this is the community's second annual chinatown lunar new year parade. rain as you can see, held off just long enough to keep everyone dry. and what an afternoon it was. everything worked out well. >> the stars line up well, the suns line up, we're happy we're here and we want to showcase oakland, chinatown. hello. hello nice to see smiles all around. >> that parade began last year as a way to drum up business in the neighborhood. chen there says they will be back again next year with another parade to welcome the year of the snake. meantime a celebration for soccer lovers in san jose. today, it's the quakes 50th anniversary block party. generations of fans got to meet up with some of their favorite players from over the decades. they signed autographs while fans enjoyed music, raffles and a youth skills challenge. the club's new jersey was also revealed along with new merchandise paying tribute to

road after heavy rain. all of this happened in del norte county, near the oregon border. crews there spent the weekend cleaning up debris to the sierra. now, where a winter storm warning is in effect until 10 a.m. wednesday, the uc berkeley sierra snow lab says it recorded 7.5in this morning, and they expect another 18 to 30in of snow through wednesday afternoon. chains are required on highway 50 in el dorado county. right now, there are no chain controls on i-80 and you reminded me before the newscast that compared to last year, we're actually behind. >> yeah. well last year was a was an epic year for rainfall and for snow. so we're not likely to catch up with that. we probably shouldn't because that might produce flooding in all kinds of problems. >> yeah. let's not go there right. >> but we're getting our fair share of rain right now. here's a look at live doppler seven. you can see that the rain is spreading rapidly across the entire bay area. started a couple of hours ago up in the north bay. and right now, as you look at those little pockets of

yellow and orange, you can see that the rain is getting heavier and steadier and more widespread. here's a satellite view of this tightly wound and powerful storm that's generating wave after wave of rain into the bay area, also producing some pretty strong gusty winds. this on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale is a level two storm for tonight, and at least part of tomorrow. look for moderate to heavy rainfall, wind gusts ranging from 25 to about 50mph, possibly a thunderstorm or two tomorrow. so for this evening, the pattern continues, mainly heavy downpours and pockets of downpours and steady rain for most of the bay area tonight. overnight into early tomorrow morning before it starts to ease up its intensity a little bit. right now we're looking at clouds over san francisco and little areas of light rain developing here in the city. temperature readings in the low 60s at san francisco, oakland, san jose and san mateo, 65 at hayward, 57 at half moon bay at the golden gate. there has been some lightrillionain. the pavement is damp, but it's there's a little bit of a break there right now. 56 degrees up north at santa rosa. petaluma, 59, low to mid 60s at napa,

fairfield, concord and livermore. and let's check out our forecast headlines for tonight. heavy rain gusty wind tomorrow possibly some thunderstorms mixing in with the rain and the wind and through midweek we expect this unsettled pattern to continue before we start to get some sunny days. we have a wind advisory that will be in effect for the entire bay area until 4 a.m. tuesday. winds will be generally out of the south at 20 to 30mph, with gusts up to or even above 50mph. we have a flood watch in effect for the entire bay area, because the ground, of course, is pretty saturated with the additional heavy rain. we're getting flooding is a possibility on creeks, streams, and low lying roads in low lying areas, and we have a high surf advisory in effect until 4:00 tuesday morning. large breakers may reach heights of 22ft or 22ft, or even higher, up to 28ft, in what they call the favored areas. with the steep beaches. and of course, there's a risk of rip currents, dangerous swimming

and surfing conditions. overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the low 50s. highs tomorrow, generally in the low 60s. so this is a pretty mild temperature range with a storm like this. and we have of course snow falling in the sierra winter storm warning in effect until 10 a.m. wednesday. we expect up to one foot of additional snow at lake level, but above 7000ft. we could see to 2 to 4ft of additional snow and gusty wind up to about 50mph. here's the accuweather seven day forecast a wet and stormy presidents day coming our way tomorrow. low level two storm through tomorrow. weakening a little bit to a level one on tuesday and wednesday. but even as the storm weakens with the ground already so saturated, any significant additional rainfall can produce flooding and shallow landsliding. and you know, trees downed. and all the problems that accompany a storm like this . >> by the way, i always call this good sports watching weather. >> it is it is good sport. >> and i like that it's staying lighter later.
