8:39 am
all right, folks. we're back with our series money moves. according to a personal finance index, black americans are not as prepared for retirement as their white peers with less than half planning for it. here to help change some of that is melissa jean-baptiste. she's the author of "so this is why i'm broke." that's enough said in that title. good to see you, my friend. thanks for being here. >> thanks for having me. >> you call yourself the beyonce of personal finance. you were able to pay off $100,000 in debt on a teacher's salary. what's one thing we need to know? >> people need to know their numbers. right? take yourself on a money date. sit down and understand how much debt you have, what is your savings look like, what is your investing plan. once you know the numbers you can set that goal for where you want to be once you know where you are currently. >> what if you have no financial background, no financial literacy? >> start off with just the basics.
8:40 am
how much debt am i in? what is the interest on my credit card? what is my monthly payment? once you really know all those numbers, then you can start off slowly with, okay, i want to pay off this debt in two months, in ten month, and you walk backwards. >> let's talk about the path to retirement. what's the difference between coast fire and traditional fire? >> for traditional fire you're aiming to retire pretty much right now. you want to know how much money do i need to stop working or become work optional? with coach fire, you still have to work. right? but what you've done, you've front loaded your investing so early that compound interest is just magic, is going to essentially give you your financial independence number, the fire number you need to retire. when you reach traditional retirement age you'll be set. you get the hard work out early. >> we have a related viewer question. she says, i'm not ready to retire early. how can i start planning to coast fire? >> first thing you want to do is
8:41 am
calculate all of your expenses for the year. once you have, okay, how much did i spend this year? once you have that number, you're going to a coach fire calculator or compound interest calculator and insert your specific numbers to your specific financial situation. then you'll go, okay, once i hit this number, this is my coast fire number. this is what i need to coast for the next 25, 30 years. >> what a way to break it down. last question is about paying off debt. let's take a look at this. >> okay. >> between student loans and personal debt, is there one i should pay off faster? >> i think we're all listening to this. >> first thing you want to do is decide if you want to move aggressively. follow a method that uses your higher debt interest rate. or you're going to follow the debt snow ball which focuses on the deb with the lowest balance. once you've decided which method, you take a look at those interest rates.
8:42 am
if you have a variable interest rate on one, that is the one you're going to want to prioritize because those will cost you more in the long run. if my student loan is set static interest i'll focus on the one that has the variable interest. >> you're the best. that's why they call you the beyonce of personal finance. >> we appreciate you. >> thank you. >> eva, we'll send things to you. >> we are switching gears. we're going to get a new look that looks like it was done in a salon but you can easily do this at home. >> i don't know if you know this, but it is national lash day. yours are looking fine, by the way. pretty great. that is a highlight or frame of one's beauty. greatest asset, your eyes. this segment is sponsored by kiss which gave two viewers a session with a celebrity makeup artist to show them how to elevate their look. the latest makeup trends are popping up over social media. >> time for the main event. the red lips.

8:44 am
line. the last step will be the seal. then you lock it in with the overnighter. >> now for the big reveal. >> oh my god. wow. >> how do you feel? >> i feel incredible. >> you look beautiful. >> next, vanessa. >> sometimes i have events at night and i want to add pop but i don't want to be carrying glitter around. are there any lashes that are good options for me? >> the new kiss press on falsies is a one step process. just press it on, use the ap applicator that it comes with and go. no glue, no mess. it lasts for 24 hours. i'm going to show you how it's done. i'm going to move this with the application tool. i'm going to start off by applying this from the outer corner of the eye. as i work my way to the inner i'll use different styles. this is right underneath the lash line. i'll take the applicator tool and just go. ready to see? >> i'm ready. >> the new look.
8:45 am
>> wow. >> you look beautiful. >> my gosh, the volume. i love it. >> it's about the long lash extension look. saves you so much time and money. i think makeup and lashes should give you that instant pick me up, instill self-confidence. >> gorgeous. my boys are so long and beautiful. but for the rest of us, this works. thank you to our sponsor, kiss, for giving our two viewers the inside kiss. you can get a special limited offer from kiss by going to gma's instagram and facebook pages. let's get a check now a little closer to home. >> now to a look at the new season of the new abc news studios true crime docu series death in the dorms with six new stories.

8:50 am

[ laughter ] it's not at all. my grandmother passed two years ago. i love my grandmother so much. she basically raised me. she didn't get to meet my son, charlie. she knew i was pregnant when she was passing. when she was transitioning, they kept reminding her that i was pregnant. she would get so excited. my son is named after her. one of my uncles who passed very young. when she passed i was like, i felt like she was still around. i feel like my grandmother is with me still. people said, that's so sweet, of course. i had charlie. and my grandma's picture is on my night stand. he would always smile looking that way towards like the picture. and i would always just feel this heavy presence of her. i'm like, oh, grandma, i love you, but i'm not trying to see you yet. not yet. then i had a friend stay at my house to watch my dog. his girlfriend stayed with him.
