developing. although they may not hit all parts of the bay area tonight, once again, we are under a storm. >> watch as we track scattered showers and powerful winds. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. >> we have abc seven news team coverage. reporter leslie brinkley talked to fire officials about mudslides and flooding concerns. >> our luz pena is in the east bay, where a chunk of road has just washed away, and suzanne phan is in the north bay, where a tree crashed into a home. but we're going to begin our coverage with abc seven news weather anchor spencer cristian tracking the storm for us. spencer. >> okay, this is some pretty wild weather we have here. let's take a look at live doppler seven right now. i'll show you the rather loosely structured nature of this storm, but we do have pockets of heavy downpours, and some of that right now is moving through the santa cruz mountains. in fact, here's a closer look. drenching downpours here. moving into the lower part of the peninsula down into the south bay. so from redwood city to palo alto to los altos, over into portola valley, we've got some drenching downpours. these uh- storm cells, these isolated

cells have been popping up and dying out rather quickly throughout much of the afternoon. this one seems to be lasting for a while. so the storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale is a level three storm through this evening. we expect more severe possibility of more severe storms, pockets of heavy rain, strong, gusty, potentially damaging winds, localized flooding also a possibility. and here is our forecast animation taking us into the evening hours. and once again, the flow of these isolated cells has been directed more directly toward the north bay. but we've been we've seen some of them pop up in other parts of the bay area as well. as we get later into the evening and night time hours, we'll see the storm lose some of its intensity. the winds will diminish a bit, and the intensity of the rainfall will diminish as well. but wind advisory remains in effect until tomorrow morning. and we have that flood watch in effect until wednesday morning. and i'll have a closer look at all of this a little bit later. i'm all right. >> we will check back. thank you. spencer our team coverage continues in solano county, where we find abc seven news

reporter leslie brinkley. and leslie, you spoke with some officials today and how are they preparing? >> well, everybody is watching and waiting, and i'm here along interstate 80 in vacaville and it's just like this moment if you're out there driving anywhere in the bay area, one minute the sun is blinding you, the next minute you're getting slammed with a heavy rainstorm. it's just been like that all day long. >> we've been informed that there may be some really extreme weather uh- thunderstorms, maybe some hail, or even the slight chance of a tornado. the thing that we worry about most, of course, with any heavy rain, is flooded out. streets so anybody that's on the roads should be very careful. >> officials are also keeping an eye on the hillsides to the north for possible mudslide tides. the weather swung to extremes throughout the day, raining substantially one minute than 15 minutes later. pockets of blue sky and even sunshine shine and vacaville residents also swung to extreme in their

reactions to the weather. >> i'm terrified. i have to work till 3:00 and i've been praying all morning like my friend just gave me a hug. i'm hoping it just skips over us. i have friends from out of state texting me and wishing me to be safe and to be careful in this weather because they heard that tornadoes are coming and flooding and all that. >> and i don't think this is much worse than the last storm we had. honestly no one was taking any chances out at the nut tree airport at this flight school, my personal concern is that the aircraft are tied down well enough because if they get loose, it's all bad. >> just so variable everywhere i'm getting a little bit of a break right now, but i can look just to the north of interstate 80. >> super ominous dark sky. it's just that kind of a cycling of these little pockets of severe weather. so again, everyone here up in solano county is just taking it every five minutes by five minutes, reporting live.

i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news. it's changing off and on. >> thanks, leslie, very much. in the east bay, caltrans crews are closing. state route 84, niles canyon road, just west of sunol. that's after a piece of the roadway fell away in what's called a slip out. abc seven news reporter luz pena. is there and joins us live. louis, this is a pretty good chunk of road we're talking about. >> massive. the road caved in and a chunk of that road ended up in the alameda creek. that happened around 5 a.m. and caltrans crews says they're going to begin those repairs tomorrow morning. this is the latest aftermath of the storm in the east bay. parts of niles canyon road west of sunol broke off into the alameda creek. >> there's a slide that's happened, and we're doing one way traffic control in an area that's that's about from pleasanton road on highway 84 to washington boulevard. so that's sort of the area that's that's affected. we're seeing this type

of thing around the bay area. this is a this is a slide at this location. >> the slip off caltrans said, is a consequence of heavy rain affecting the roadways when the roadway gets eroded, the ground underneath it kind of washes out. >> then the pavement slips down right or becomes under navigable. so we can't have people driving on it. >> hayward the weekend storms led many like rob hart to go out this morning to get sandbags. >> the rain came down and had debris covered. the clogged my drain came out last night and uh, sort of letting my garage. >> multiple fire stations in alameda county running low on sand as an influx of residents prepare for. >> and it got hit pretty hard yesterday. uh, we're probably going to order some more sand later today. um we did have our fire crew and reserves come and fill pre fill sandbags, so we have a few left, but they're going quick with high winds parts of the east bay are also under increased tornado risk. >> tornado in hayward now never.

>> and hopefully i won't see one anytime soon. battalion chief cartland urging the public to stay alert with the high winds that we're experiencing now, we've got a lot of weakened trees. >> so if anybody hears any cracking or sees any leaning, they should take note of that and make the proper notifications. and caltrans is set to close this road anytime. >> now as to an eta of when this road will be reopened and repaired, that's still unknown. in encinal, luz pena abc seven news. all right, lucy, thank you so much. >> a downed tree made driving a challenge for people in one moraga neighborhood. look at this. a tree fell across pinehurst road. drivers were told to take another route, but that didn't stop. some of them from going through. as you see. anyway >> big tree. obviously wind gusts up to 53 miles an hour. also hit the north bay, sending trees crashing onto roads and homes. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn is live in santa rosa, where one man, suzanne, is dealing with damage to his roof.

yeah dan, tonight you can see the big blue tarp protecting the roof. >> there. now, the man who lives there tells me he thought it was an earthquake, but it turns out it was a tree that slammed into his home. >> it shook the whole house. >> davis matthew is still a bit rattled by what happened this morning in santa rosa, at his apartment on fourth street in dimond, caught. >> i was sitting in my office trying to play some video games on my day off, and, uh, all of a sudden it felt like an earthquake hit my house. but from above thought that the tree had gone entirely through the wall of my house. >> that branch that impaled matthew's roof and wall, uh, probably like this big around. >> maybe the part that went through my house. >> inside matthew's home, you can see the entire thing stretches the whole way. >> neighbors like sherry hill are concerned when a big storm rolls in her apartment unit is on the edge of a creek filled with gushing water. >> it gets high and the water gets under the deck. >> sometimes. and

it's really eroding. every year gets worse. so it's taken out seven, eight feet of property. in the last two years. it's taken about a foot and a half in the last. the heavy rain today on our way through sonoma county. >> and here's a closer look at the gusty winds from our mount tam camera. all across the north bay, people have been gearing up for the stormy weather, whether it's with sandbags or shoring up their property. very busy all week, but salvador contreras with contreras roofing says he's been slammed with work. >> we've been really busy. um, this is our second call. we got another call after this. >> we checked in with sonoma county fire district at their bodega bay station. flags were whipping in the wind in. windsor, sonoma county. this road is under water. this is how things looked on waller road near forestville before noon. the water level getting higher back to davis. matthew and the tree branch that went through his home today. >> just fortunate that no one got hurt. >> and sonoma county fire

district tells me that today they got a lot of calls about downed trees, about downed power lines and flooded roads. and again, luckily no one was hurt. we're live in santa rosa, suzanne phan abc seven news. >> thank you so much, suzanne. sporadic power outages for some stores to close temporarily at san jose's oak ridge mall. some of the employees, as you see, were closing their doors as her store was left in the dark. lights at other stores flickered on and off. we're waiting to hear back from oak ridge about how extensive the power outages were, and whether they are part of the wider power outages affecting some neighborhoods and thousands on the subject. >> thousands of p-g-and-e's customers across the bay area are without electricity right now. here's a live look at the real time outage map. the utility is making significant progress restoring power. just over 6200 people in the dark now , compared to 16,000 and just an hour ago. the biggest outages are in the south bay, where 3600

of the day, we've seen isolated pockets of stormy weather moving through the bay area. that's still the pattern we have right now, but you'll see here on live doppler seven that down in the east bay right now, we've got a more widespread area of rain moving out of the south bay. most of this activity is moving from our southwest up to the northeast. so right now we've got downpours near fremont, union city, hayward, easton, over to pleasanton and out toward san ramon. so some pretty steady rain fall at the moment, but of course is not very widespread. nonetheless, this is a level three storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale through this evening. more pockets of severe stormy weather pockets of heavy rainfall, strong gusty wind, localized flooding all associated with this system. now here's the forecast animation showing that as we get later into the evening hours, although we'll still see some storm cells moving through isolated cells later in the evening, we'll see the system weakening just a bit. the intensity of the rainfall and the wind will diminish. and all this should occur or be evident by about 11:00 tonight. on we go to the current wind speeds. we have gusts nearly 40mph right

now at sfo. and 25 to about 35 mile per hour gusts, generally across the region. and of course, there's been talk about the possibility of a tornado. so although that's unlikely, i want to give you some tornado safety tips. stay away from the second floor of the building you're in or your home. a most damage in a tornado occurs on the top floor and other tips go to the lowest floor in your home or in the building that you're in. seek an interior hallway or a bathroom. avoid windows and cover your head with a cushion or a pillow or something that may protect you from debris that will be flying around. but again, we're not likely to see a tornado right now. we have temperature readings in the upper 50s at hayward, oakland, san francisco, 61 at san jose, and upper 50s at san mateo. at half moon bay, at the golden gate. we've seen a little patches of blue sky, and there's still a little bit there. upper 50s right now at santa rosa, petaluma, napa, fairfield, concord and livermore . on we go to our wind advisory, which will remain in effect until 4 a.m. tomorrow. wind gusts may still reach 50mph. generally, they'll be out of the

south, the winds at 15 to 30mph. we still have a high surf advisory in effect until 4:00 tomorrow morning. the surface rough. there's a risk of rip currents. of course, these are dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, and with saturated soil and rain continuing to fall , flood watch remains in effect for the entire bay area until wednesday morning. over in the sierra, a significant winter storm, a winter storm warning is in effect there until 10 a.m. wednesday. we may see 2 to 4ft of additional snow in the higher elevations there. above 7000ft back to the bay area tonight. during the overnight hours, we'll see low temperatures dropping into the upper 40s to low 50s. for the most part, not a lot of rain is expected overnight, but we'll see more showers moving through the area tomorrow. high temperatures in the afternoon, generally in the upper 50s to low 60s and here is the accuweather 70 forecast. so tomorrow. still rainy, still breezy, although not quite so gusty as today. level one storm tomorrow and even lighter storm activity on wednesday, yet still a level one. we expect morning
