>> all right, live doppler seven shows just how scattered today's weather is. but the most dangerous part of the storm doesn't show up on radar. but as you can see there, there is a severe thunderstorm warning that just popped up. good evening. thank you for joining us. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. it is a weird day for weather. we're talking about trees falling, blocking roads, power lines coming down, thousands losing power, streets giving way during sudden downpours. >> yeah, this is a level three storm on the exclusive abc seven news storm impact scale because of the chance for strong winds, lightning and hail and we've even been warned that a brief tornado is possible. >> don't hear that very often before we get to the rest of our team coverage, we want to start with abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian spencer. >> okay, dan and i just want to point out that severe thunderstorm warning that just popped up is for locations far outside the bay area over in the sierra. let's take a closer look at some of the storms here in our area, though. down in the santa cruz mountains right now

moving through the south bay, we've got some pretty heavy downpours in the saratoga los gatos area and over towards campbell and cupertino and in the east bay between dublin and livermore. we've got some downpours that are sort of moving to our east now, pushing away from the bay area. nonetheless we still have a level three storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale through this evening. more severe storms are likely to pop up, with pockets of heavy rain and strong, damaging winds. localized flooding is possible as well. here's the forecast animation, taking us later into the evening hours. we'll see the storm losing some of its intensity as we get past 8 or 9 p.m, but until then, these storms, these storm cells will pop up just about anywhere. although it appears that most of the activity will be in the north bay, wind gusts are still in the 25 to 40 mile per hour range. those winds will diminish a bit later tonight, but right now they're pretty strong and potentially damaging. now, there was a mention of tornadoes, not likely to have one here in the bay area, but should one develop, stay away from the second floor. most damaged from

tornadoes occurs on the top floor. seek the lowest possible floor. you can. try to get into an interior hallway or bathroom. stay away from windows, of course, and cover your head if you can, with cushions, pillows, that sort of thing. i'll give you more details on our stormy weather a little bit later. ama all right, spencer, thank you. >> in the east bay state route 84, niles canyon road, just west of sunol, is closed because of storm damage. a piece of the roadway fell away in what caltrans calls a slip out. abc seven news reporter luz pena is there. she is live for the details tonight. loose >> that's right. the road caved in and a chunk of it slipped off into the alameda creek. this happened around 5 a.m, and about an hour ago, caltrans closed the road. as they gear up to begin repairs. this is the latest after math of the storm in the east bay. parts of niles canyon road, west of sunol broke off into the alameda creek. >> there's a slide that's happened, and we're doing one way traffic control in an area that's that's about from pleasanton road on highway 84 to

washington boulevard. so that's sort of the area that's that's affected. we're seeing this type of thing around the bay area. this is a this is a slide at this location. >> the slip off caltrans said, is a consequence of heavy rain affecting the roadways when the roadway gets eroded, the ground underneath it kind of washes out. >> then the pavement slips down right? or becomes unnavigable. so we can't have people driving on it. >> hayward the weekend storms led many like rob hart to go out this morning to get sandbags as the rain came down and had debris covered. >> the clogged my drain came out last night and, uh, sort of letting my garage multiple fire stations in alameda county running low on sand as an influx of residents prepare. >> and it got hit pretty hard yesterday. uh we're probably going to order some more sand later today. um, we did have our fire crew and reserves come and fill pre fill sandbags. we have a few left, but they're going

quick with high winds. >> parts of the east bay are also under increased tornado risk. tornado in hayward now never. >> and hopefully i won't see one anytime soon. battalion chief cartland urging the public to stay alert with the high winds that we're experiencing now, we've got a lot of weakened trees, so if anybody hears any cracking or sees any leaning, they should take note of that and make the proper notifications. >> caltrans crews are set to begin repairs tomorrow morning. yet there's still no eta on when this road will reopen in sunol. luz pena, abc seven news luce, thank you. >> and in moraga, it could be another six hours before pinehurst road officially reopens. a tree came down. as you see, this morning near canyon road. drivers are being told to go around using skyline boulevard, although some are risking and going under it anyway by solano county. >> got walloped by the storm. it got nearly one inch of rain yesterday. abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley is in

vacaville live, where they're getting more rain and leslie facing an increase at risk at least of tornadoes. >> hi, dan. yeah, it's been a really strange weather day here. a little bit of everything, i think hardest for drivers. i'm here along interstate 80 and behind me is not uh- parkway. and all of this is the nut tree parkway. and all of this has just made it. one minute you're in the sun. one minute you're in a horrible storm. it's been difficult for everybody. and right now there's the calm. and we're greatly appreciating that part. >> we've been informed that there may be some really extreme weather thunderstorms, maybe some hail, even the slight chance of a tornado. the thing that we worry about most, of course, with any heavy rain, is uh- flooded out streets. so anybody that's on the roads should be very careful. >> officials are also keeping an eye on the hillsides to the

north for possible mudslides. the weather swung to extremes throughout the day, raining substantial really one minute, then 15 minutes later, pockets of blue sky and even sunshine. and vacaville residents also swung to extremes in their reactions to the weather. >> i'm terrified. i have to work till 3:00 and i've been praying all morning like my friend just gave me a hug. i'm hoping to just skips over us this is just typical for this time of year, honestly, and i'm thankful for the rain as we all are. >> i have friends from out of state texting me and wishing me to be safe and to be careful in this weather because they heard that tornadoes are coming and flooding and all that. >> no one was taking any chances out at the nut tree airport at this flight school, my personal concern is that the aircraft are tied down well enough because if they get loose, it's all bad. >> if the weather continues like it has been all morning, there won't be any flying for us

because as a flight school, we've put a limit of 30 miles an hour. gusts um, on our limitations. >> it's definitely gusty winds here this afternoon. now, the thing most people are telling me at the shopping center near us is they're relieved that that even remote chance of a tornado never ended up materializing. and they hope that continues over the next couple hours. reporting live in vacaville. i'm leslie brinkley, abc seven news certainly do. >> okay, leslie, thanks very much. a eucalyptus tree came crashing down in the backyard of a home in san bruno this afternoon. the tree took down some power lines at the house on evergreen drive. p-g-and-e's sent a worker to check on the damage. sporadic power outages forced some stores to close temporarily at san jose's oak ridge mall. some of the employees closed their doors as the lights flickered, and eventually they just left them in the dark. as you can see here, those stores temporarily closed at san jose's oak ridge

mall. now nearly 3300 customers are without electricity. as we speak. this is a real time map of those outages. an hour ago, more than 6000 customers didn't have power. right now, the largest outages are in the north bay, where 1200 customers are affected, and in the south bay, where just shy of 1000 people are in the dark. >> wind gusts up to 53mph hit the north bay, sending trees crashing into roads and homes. abc seven news reporter suzanne phan joins us live in santa rosa, where suzanne, one man, is dealing with damage to his roof. so ama davis matthews knows he's a really lucky guy. >> he was home, but he wasn't hurt when they major, a large tree came crashing down on his roof. >> it shook the whole house. davis matthew is still a bit rattled by what happened this morning in santa rosa, at his apartment off fourth street in

dimond court. >> so i was sitting in my office trying to play some video games on my day off, and, uh, all of a sudden it felt like an earthquake hit my house. but from above thought that the tree had gone entirely through the wall of my house. >> that branch that impaled matthew's roof and wall, uh, probably like this big around. >> maybe the part that went through my house inside matthew's home, you can see the entire thing stretches the whole way. >> neighbors like sherry hill are concerned. and when a big storm rolls in, her apartment unit is on the edge of a creek filled with gushing water. >> it gets high and the water gets under the deck sometimes, and we just worry it's really eroding every year it gets worse. so it's taken out seven, eight feet of property. in the last two years. it's taken about a foot and a half in the last three days. >> check out the heavy rain today on our way through sonoma county. and here's a closer look at the gusty winds from our mount tam camera all across the north bay, people have been gearing up for the stormy

weather, whether it's with sandbags or shoring up their property very busy all week, but salvador contreras with contreras roofing says he's been slammed with work. >> we've been really busy. um, this is our second call. we got another call after this. >> we checked in with sonoma county fire district at their bodega bay station. flags were whipping in the wind in windsor, sonoma county. this road is under water. this is how things looked on waller road near forest hill before noon. the water level getting higher back to davis. matthew and the tree branch that went through his home today. >> just fortunate that no one got hurt. loma county fire district tells me. >> they got a lot of calls today for fallen trees, as well as downed power lines, as well as flooded streets. but the good news again is that no one was hurt. we're live in santa rosa, suzanne phan abc seven news. >> yep, that is certainly good to hear. thank you. suzanne check out this time lapse. we recorded this in south san francisco today. you can see the clouds moving rapidly across the sky and get the latest forecast.

>> new developments from the north bay, the effort to save a 57 ton fishing vessel that washed aground near bodega bay more than a week ago has failed. the aleutian storm has been ripped apart by waves. you see it here. these images are just what's left of the boat at salmon creek beach. bits and pieces of the vessel are now littering the sand. and there was hope the crab fishing boat could have been salvaged on friday. those chances were dashed when the coast guard ordered the operation to stop. a gash formed in the hull, compromising the boat's integrity has been fierce out there. i did see a rainbow, though. today i think there were two. >> well that's nice, we deserve it this fierce weather. spencer christine is tracking the storm. spencer. it's really spotty and intense all over the bay area. that's exactly right. >> dan. great description. spotty storms, but intense storms. so these cells are sort of widely scattered. but when they hit, they bring heavy rain and strong, damaging wind. here's a look at live doppler seven. and you can see that well it just has some cells developing offshore. you can see

that over the land areas here. there's not a lot happening right now. there they are. those cells are moving in our direction. coming up from our southwest, moving northeastward. so at the moment for most of the bay area, things are relatively quiet compared with what we've seen so far today and into the evening hours. this is our storm still spinning out there at sea and kicking up wave after wave of rainfall and generating strong, gusty wind as well. on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale, this is a level three storm through this evening. we expect the possibility of more severe storms, pockets of heavy rain, strong gusty wind and of course, localized flooding continues to be a concern for cast animation going into the evening hours shows the storm beginning to lose some of its intensity after about 8 or 9:00. although it looks like the north bay is going to get a steady stream of storm cells swinging through that area up until about midnight or so. then, during the overnight hours, we'll see the storm become much less intense and the winds will diminish a bit. but at the moment we still have wind gusts up to almost 40mph at novato, over 30mph at sfo. but again over the next few

hours, we'll see those winds get a little bit tamer. temperature readings right now, mainly in the upper 50s at san francisco, oakland, hayward, san mateo and half moon bay, 61 at san jose. at the golden gate bridge, we had some patches of clear sky earlier. does not appear to be raining there right now, as it is not over much of the bay area. temperature readings mid to upper 50s santa rosa, petaluma, napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. we still have a wind advisory in effect until 4:00 tomorrow morning. wind gusts could still reach 50mph, but right now we're looking at most of the winds out of the south at about 15 to 30mph. and we have a rough high surf advisory in effect until 4:00 tomorrow morning. wave heights are elevated. they could reach heights of 22ft. and of course, dangerous rip currents, dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and a flood watch remains in effect until wednesday morning for the entire bay area, soil is saturated. any additional rainfall, even light amounts, can produce localized flooding in the sierra. a winter storm warning in effect until wednesday morning. there may be

another 2 to 4ft of snow falling and accumulating above 7000ft back to the bay area overnight, clouds linger and patches of showers high temp, low temperatures rather in the upper 40s to low 50s. high temperatures tomorrow under still a chance of scattered showers, mainly upper 50s to low 60s. and here is the accuweather seven day forecast. so our level three storm will give way to level one storm activity tomorrow. it will still be rainy and breezy, but not with the powerful gusts that we've experienced today. wednesday morning showers are likely, so we'll keep that at a level one as well. but then some good news drying out and getting sunnier on thursday. a mix of sun and clouds on friday, but over the weekend, clouds will increase again and there is a slight chance of showers through the weekend. can't be more specific yet because it's too far out, but a history is our guide. >> oh yeah, history is a pretty good guide. >> thanks. >> all right. coming up next, a day of remembrance. you can't change the past, but you can

% old mazen darwish oman was missing police this morning said she has been located. the ebony alert is a new statewide system to help locate missing black children and women between the ages of 12 and 25. an alarming new report exposes a danger under several. freeways in california. out of 60 underpass storage sites statewide, just 12 past fire marshal inspection says two out of 16 sites passed in the bay area. fire marshals uncovered several fire risks and lease violations. caltrans leases out the space under freeways and said tenants were given 30 days to correct any problems. inspections were spurred by a fire in november under the ten in los angeles.

>> today is a day of remembrance for the thousands of people of japanese ancestry who were interned during world war two. san jose state university played a role in their incarceration, but now leaders there are hoping to shape a better future. going forward. here's abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey. >> like a rain cloud hanging overhead, executive order 966 represents a dark day in japanese culture, especially here at san jose state university. february 19th, 1942. 82 years ago, president franklin roosevelt signed the order in response to the attack on pearl harbor. it led to the incarceration of more than 120,000 japanese americans. judy nagai remembers the struggles her father and others faced in the camps. the red dirt and dust came up through the floorboards of the shoddily constructed barracks. >> they were subjected, subjected to extreme weather and the constant reminder that they were labeled as enemy aliens within their own country.

>> perspective shared during a day of remembrance hosted by san jose state, a place where a reminder of the mass incarceration still lives on campus today. yoshihiro uchida hall is now named after someone who faced internment and survived, but it was formerly a processing center for the local japanese community. 125 sdsu students were among those forced into camps. >> that was, you know, maybe my family. that was someone else's family. in the same space, you know, that i have classes and that really, really changed my perspective of like, this is history right in front of us. and we have to tell these stories because who else is going to tell the story that they were here for those stories on display at this annual event, the hope is to honor the japanese culture and recognize the atrocities of the past in order to create a better future. >> on behalf of san jose state university, i apologize to the people who were processed through our campus. we can't turn back the clock. we can't undo the damage, but we can learn from what happened.

from the outside holding up the mirror to, okay, no, but he didn't pull it out of thin air. >> there are issues that we've been trying to solve. there are is it more about crime or quality of life? >> it is more about quality of life. i mean, this is not a place where you're going to get shot on the streets. this is a place where it's talking about quality of life. and he's made that pretty clear. but we have to remember that we are in the quality of life business, either through tech or from tourism. and so that generates billions of dollars and yes, we are continuing to score. we're going to get the all star game next year. we're going to get the super bowl. we're going to get big conference. it is going to happen. but we have an image problem and we have to work through it and we have to be honest about it. and i also like to point out is how he said it. he's up there trash talking okay. but when buster posey of the giants made similar comments saying it was tough for the team to recruit players, in part because the players families didn't necessarily feel safe in san francisco, uh, it was the same message, only delivered in

a different tone and with a more sympathetic and he said, i can't help it. perception is reality wasn't as harsh as what. thank you. >> but how do you overcome this? when a celebrity does this on such a high platform? >> well, you can't overcome it. what you can try to do is lessen the noise by making more noise. a former mayor, willie brown, had his problems and problems on the streets of san francisco, but he made a point of once a month having something happen in the city that got positive attention. whether it was bringing the cable car bills or tony bennett singing or something happening, he made a point of putting those images out there because you the only way to beat a negative image is to create a positive one. you're never going to erase the negative. you can just outshine it. >> you can't be on the defensive . you have to be on. >> right. exactly. phil, thank you very much. what did you say coming up next, details of the denise huskins kidnaping case revealed nearly a decade later. >> even though there was a tv

and denise huskins are retelling their story involving the vallejo police department. >> reliving it is always a challenge. it always brings up a lot of deep pain from the past. >> in 2015, matthew mueller broke into quinn's vallejo home, tying up, blindfolding and drugging the couple before kidnaping huskins for ransom. >> the kidnapers told me, if you call the police, we killed denise. >> when quinn did call vallejo police detective matt mustard interrogated him, believing he had killed huskins. >> so now i get out my puzzle pieces and i start figuring out, okay, how do i make it? so you look like a monster? >> he was even accused of failing a lie detector test. >> you know where she is? i don't know where she is. i want you guys to find her. they are trained to break you. >> they're good at. that's what they do. >> he was kidnaped too. but by the police. because they try to isolate you. they keep you from your family. they manipulate the environment. and it's all geared towards breaking you. >> but when mueller released huskins in southern california

shortly after the kidnaping, vallejo police changed their story, going on camera and asserting the couple had staged an elaborate kidnaping hoax. >> it is mr. quinn and miss huskins that owes this community an apology. >> the fact that they went on national news so quickly just to destroy our reputations, their reputations smeared and possibly facing prosecution. >> the couple had a hero in the wings. then dublin police detective misty caruso. >> i just knew that i was going to help her in some form of another caruso took on the case after a similar thwarted home invasion in dublin, where mueller left behind his cell phone. >> investigators used it to track him to south lake tahoe, where they found evidence including huskins blond hair on a pair of swim goggles. >> for two days, i believe that i would be killed. and i had to make peace with the end of my life, but at the same time, i had to keep fighting. >> mueller is now serving a 40 year prison sentence for the kidnaping. melanie woodrow, abc

few surprises along the way in los angeles. >> george pennacchio, abc seven news. >> and those surprises begin tuesday night at ten right here on abc seven. >> such a good show. and he's such a good ax. all right, let's go back and update the weather forecast. >> yes, spencer christian is here with what's going on outside. spencer okay. >> ama and dan the weather still bringing us some surprises. here's a look at live doppler seven. you can see that not much is happening in the way of active weather and severe storms. on land areas right now, but out to sea, we've got some pretty active cells developing moving in our direction. so once again, on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale, this is a level three storm through this evening. there will be more pockets of heavy rain and strong, gusty wind and of course, localized flooding is possible as well. forecast animation taking us into the late evening hours shows most of the active weather moving into the north bay. although isolated cells can pop up just about anywhere later tonight, we'll see the entire system weakening just enough that the intensity of the rainfall will be slightly diminished, as will the winds.

wind speeds as well. and then overnight, we'll see further weakening of the storm as rainfall estimates between now and 11 p.m. will be generally under a 10th of an inch. so not a great deal more rainfall is likely, but wind speeds are still problematic. a wind advisory remains in effect until 4:00 tomorrow morning. winds may gust as high as 50mph. a high surf advisory remains in effect. also until 4 a.m. tomorrow. dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and of course, that flood watch for the entire bay area, in effect until wednesday morning because it doesn't take much rain on top of saturated soil to produce flooding in the sierra. a major winter storm, a winter storm warning in effect until wednesday morning at 10 a.m. 2 to 4ft of additional snow could accumulate at elevations above. 7000ft. and here is accuweather seven day forecast. well, we'll be happy to see this current storm weakened to a level one tomorrow. still though, rainy and breezy through the day tomorrow with showers lingering into wednesday morning. still a level one at
