street in sunol. abc seven news reporter lena howland is live there. this morning. and, lena, do we know how much longer it will be closed? >> julian, good morning to you. right now. it's not clear how much longer this road will be closed for, but chp is now saying to expect this road to be closed for at least the next few days, while caltrans can evaluate the conditions and they're options. take a look at this video. our aerial view shows part of niles canyon road west of sunol broke off into the alameda creek. this all happened almost exactly 24 hours ago, right around 5 a.m. yesterday. caltrans is calling this a slip out from a mudslide in the area. they say it's a consequence of heavy rain affecting the roadways is when the roadway gets eroded, the ground underneath it kind of washes out. >> then the pavement slips down, right? or becomes unnavigable. so we can't have people driving

on it. so that's what's going on out there right now. and we're going to need to make a repair before we can open the road all the way back up. >> crews still had one lane of this highway open doing one way traffic controls up until about 5:00 last night. that's when chp shut down both directions of the road indefinitely. caltrans crews are expected to be back out here this morning to assess these conditions and figure out when and if it's safe to go back to one way traffic controls. but as of right now, they're saying there is no estimated time of getting this road fully reopened . live in sunol. lena howland abc seven news. okay, thank you so much, lena. >> heavy wind gusts knocked out power and downed trees across the bay area yesterday. a massive tree fell in burlingame, stopping southbound traffic along. i 280. thankfully, nobody was hurt, but it backed up traffic for quite some time. >> it was very, very windy. you could see the trees swaying. there was actually sparkles and smoke coming on the on the in

the middle of the road. and so that you can see that the power lines were down. >> p-g-and-e's eventually restored power to about 1000 customers who lost it in that area. as caltrans worked to clear the roadway there, there was nearly 3300 p-g-and-e's customers without electricity overnight. >> now, this is the real time map of those outages. currently, the largest outages are in the south bay, where 600 customers are impacted in saratoga. power outages in the south bay interrupted some holiday shopping plans as abc seven news south bay reporter loren martinez explains. it also had some business owners on edge. >> the owner of sweet retreat, an ice cream parlor in san jose, said the power came on and off at least three times on monday, so power is very, very important for us, very important. >> it's our heartbeat. on john patrick said his biggest worry wasn't about losing customers on a busy holiday weekend. >> it was whether he was going to have to throw out 300 gallons

worthless, where the city has abandoned us. ramon tells us his posts are aimed to bring awareness about what's happening, especially in east oakland. >> in the saga of the beached fishing vessel at bodega bay is finally over, the effort to save a 57 ton fishing boat that washed aground more than a week ago failed the aleutian storm was ripped apart by ferocious waves. these are images of what's left of the boat at salmon creek beach. bits and pieces of the vessel are now littering the sand. you see it there? there was hope. the crab fishing boat could have been salvaged last friday, the coast guard ordered the operation to stop, essentially dashing those chances, a gash formed in the hull, compromising the boat's integrity. >> the pacific pier is expected to reopen today. the storm brought more pounding waves to the san mateo county coast yesterday, with waves sending water on to beach boulevard. officials there closed the pier yesterday as a precaution after storm damaged it last month. >> and check out how high the

closed. the santa barbara airport again. that's the second time this has happened in the past few weeks in ventura county. it's mudslide that have everyone worried. >> we're also keeping an eye on the hillsides and their saturation levels and making advisories on evacuations. if necessary. >> in la county, flash flood warnings are in effect for the beverly glen area. neighbors are on alert in case mud starts moving downhill. >> some much needed financial assistance will soon be heading to san diego after the powerful storm caused widespread flooding there. fema announced a major disaster declaration for the city. after that storm hit in january. governor newsom says the declaration will help support residents and businesses affected. the mayor of san diego is praising the announcement, saying it will help rebuild the city. >> an alarming new report exposes a danger under several freeways in california. out of 60 underpass storage sites statewide, just 12 passed fire marshal inspections, two out of

16 sites passed in the bay area. fire marshals uncovered several fire risks and lease violations. caltrans leases out the space under the freeways and said tenants were given 30 days to correct any problems. inspections were spurred by this fire. in november under i-10 in los angeles. >> president biden begins his three day visit to california today. he's expected to attend several political events here in san francisco, as well as los angeles and los altos hills. this week, the white house says president biden will be delivering remarks at an official event in los angeles today, before heading to san francisco for an event tomorrow. his bay area events are all campaign related heading into the 2024 election, and for the second time in less than a week, hundreds of pro-palestinian protesters shut down a major roadway yesterday. they caused closures on the central freeway in san francisco. the protesters started at san francisco city hall, marching down market

street, then eventually onto 101 near the van ness exit. the demonstrators are calling for a permanent and immediate cease fire in gaza. a temporary cease fire is absolutely not sufficient. >> you can't pause a genocide. there is only stopping it. >> police eventually cleared the highway about an hour later. no word if anyone was detained or arrested during this demonstration. and of course, last week a similar protest blocked traffic for several minutes on the golden gate bridge in just a matter of hours , arab nations will be putting to a vote on a un resolution demanding that immediate humanitarian cease fire in gaza. those nations hope to show broad global support for ending the war. the us is expected to veto this measure. the us deputy ambassador says the resolution is not an effective mechanism for getting hostages out. among other things, the un security council says there would be more support for a temporary cease

moving over the same area. that's called training. and unfortunately, that can lead to flooding. we are seeing that in parts of napa. a flood advisory is in effect because of these downpours that can drop a lot of rain in a short amount of time. snow is falling in the sierra. even some thunder, snow at times. still underneath the winter storm warning. we're expecting about 6 to 10 additional inches today. underneath that warning, it's a level two, a moderate storm. today we're underneath a flood. watch everybody for the potential of more areas of flooding throughout the afternoon, because everything is just so saturated. we've been underneath this wet pattern since saturday, and now with downpours in the forecast, that could lead to flooding. so here's future weather. we'll watch radar very closely throughout the middle part of the day and into the afternoon. you can see more downpours are developing and into the afternoon. it's likely the east bay and the south bay that has the best chance of seeing that heavy rain. highs today. we'll go into the upper 50s and lower 60s, but we do have drier weather later this week. we'll show you the seven day forecast

headed in our direction. it does have a history of producing lightning. so thunderstorms are in the forecast today. but there is no chance of a tornado that threat is over with winds have really backed off. yesterday we had winds in excess of 60mph in spots. our wind advisory is over, but we could see some breezy conditions later on today. it's a level two for those showers and scattered downpours and that chance of a thunderstorm. the biggest threat would be localized flooding. right now, temperatures are waking up. we're in the 50s, so it's not too chilly by any means. here's future weather later on this afternoon and into the evening. we'll track those scattered downpours. and underneath those downpours you can get a quick amount of rain in a short amount of time. that's why we're worried about flooding. here's the accuweather seven day forecast level two today morning showers giving way to sunshine tomorrow. and then finally you want that dry day. it is thursday. get out and enjoy it. and even into friday. it's a mix of sun and clouds. >> gloria cannot wait for that dry day, drew. but for today, probably some slick roads out there. if you are driving this morning and you know we have an
