area diverted after damage to the wing. tonight we're hearing what it was like to be in the air, starting from scratch. >> a northern california city restarts its search for a police chief, all because of a controversial candidate from the bay area. flooding in the blink of an eye. >> san francisco streets turned into fountains. the wild images from the intense storm are not done just yet. after days of rainy commutes, flooded streets, we still have some lingering showers and, you see, live on the left from our exploratorium camera. >> a few of those storm clouds

are still overhead. we, of course, are tracking it all. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. >> we have lots to get to tonight. first, let's jump to abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel she's been looking at our current weather picture. sandhya yeah. >> and it is definitely still wet in parts of the bay area tonight. ama and dan. let's take a look at live doppler seven and we'll talk about what is happening. so we are still tracking some showers. some of those are moderate in intensity around martinez, benicia, pacheco boulevard, clay in concord area. also seeing some wet weather around mill valley, paradise drive, tiburon. so i wouldn't hang up the umbrellas just yet. this afternoon, san francisco at one point had 8000/800 of an inch in just one hour. you can see why that flash flood warning was issued this afternoon as we look around the south bay edenvale, santa teresa boulevard across 85, it is light to moderate rain right now, and there are still some flooding concerns. we have that flood warning in sonoma county that has been extended until 10 a.m. tomorrow. no flooding continues.

flood watch for solano county until 4 a.m. tomorrow. as we look at this wider picture, this level two storm continues to trigger some flooding concerns, and thunderstorms have been an issue today. as we go hour by hour, you will notice tomorrow morning there will be wetrillionoadways for the commute between 5 and 7 a.m. those scattered showers still with us into the afternoon and it is a two. as i mentioned. so we are looking at overnight into tomorrow. showers heavy at times. chance of isolated thunder and flooding is possible. i'll be back with a look at how much rain has fallen , plus a look at when our next opportunity for wet weather will be coming up. >> dan okay sandy, thanks a lot. it's easy to see why there was a flash flood warning earlier today. san francisco saw nearly an inch of rain per hour in a matter of minutes. the storm turned streets into rivers with water rushing all over the place and coming out of manhole covers and absolute deluge in san francisco turned streets into lakes. this afternoon. this is what it looked like at franklin

and greene. there was so much water. it was coming up through the manhole covers and spraying into the air. drivers decided they'd just try to go right through it anyway, over in hayes valley, the water came up quickly, causing flooding there. once again, there was so much water it turned the middle of an intersection into a fountain. it all happened really fast. listen to what one man saw while he was inside a restaurant on hayes street. yeah all over. >> all over the wall was like rushing in. like a big wave over on bush and webster, the downpour left a small lake as the water pooled at one of the corners. >> it was a similar story over at the intersection of webster and ellis, but the cars had to drive through it. eddy and golf was also a mess as water created a little lake. there over by a muni stop and as these storms come in, we want to make it easy for you to check the state of california's snowpack and water levels. our abc seven news data team compiled this real time weather tracker with local

reservoir capacities, monthly rain and even snow totals at each ski resort. this is up for you right now at abc seven news.com. >> new details tonight on united airlines flight 354. damage on the plane's wing diverted the flight going from sfo to boston yesterday. no one was hurt, but of course, it's still unsettling, especially with other high profile in-flight incidents lately. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone is hearing what it was like to be on board. >> imagine flying somewhere and seeing this on your plane. damage to the wing. >> i immediately opened a window. look out there going, well, that's not good. >> kevin clark, who was an announcer on the world pro ski tour, took this video on a flight from san francisco to boston monday. he says he was a bit concerned after takeoff when he felt the plane shaking all of a sudden. >> here's. wow violent vibration and, you know, just noise. i've never heard from a plane before. and it stopped within seconds. and i'm like, well, that's good. stop

>> clark says a short time later , one of the pilots then walked down the aisle, looked out the window, and went back to the cockpit. >> a minute later, he comes on the uh- pa system and announces that we've sustained, sustained some damage to the slat leading edge of the slat underneath. you know, the wing air traffic control audio gives more insight into what was happening in the cockpit. >> roger, i'll try to give you a little bit extra five miles just to, uh, get a little bit of a decent reference configuration. perfect appreciate that. you know, the 354 charlie. >> the plane was then rerouted to denver, where it successfully landed. as to the extent of the damage on the 757. here's abc news aviation expert steve ganyard. >> if the damage had been more to the front part, it could have affected the controllability of the airplane. luckily, in this case, it was in the rear and it really didn't have much effect on how the airplane handled clark, along with other passengers, were then put on another plane to boston. >> he's back home now with his wife, but still thinking about

what happened on that initial flight. >> he actually went through some incredible turbulence. you know, probably half an hour after he came on and talked about it. and that's when i really got panicked because i'm like, boy, if this wing is flopping now in this turbulence, what, you know, what's going to happen? so i kept looking out the window, looking at the edge of that wing going, well, i don't see any more parts missing yet. that's good. >> all 165 people on board are okay. as for the cause, the faa says the incident is under investigation. j.r. stone abc seven news. new developments involving vallejo's interim police chief, who was reportedly considered the top candidate to take over as the chief of police in salinas. >> the city is going to restart the hiring process from scratch. jason todd was expected to be announced as salinas choice, but the interim city manager never actually posted the police chief position to who has faced some controversy in vallejo came from a pool of candidates that had applied for assistant chief.

once that hire was made, the interim city manager moved to fill the chief position at and just at the end, i determined that we need to look at at everyone again, not just the finite number that i had identified for me in middle of january. there were also concerns the hire was being made before the city could name a new city manager and community. the community didn't get a chance to weigh in. >> president biden touched down at lax today, kicking off a three day california visit which will include stops in the bay area. the president will participate in two campaign receptions today and tomorrow in southern california. the president will fly to the bay area tomorrow for two more fundraising events, one in san francisco wednesday and another in los altos hills on thursday. then it is back to washington tonight. >> the leading four candidates vying for california's open senate seat faced off in their final debate before the march primary. >> would you vote for a resolution that said israel has to impose an immediate cease fire right now? no conditions,

register to vote dot ca.gov before the clock strikes midnight. you can also check your registration status and confirm your address. only 52% of eligible californians voted in the last primary election, and officials want to significantly increase that number this time tonight. >> a building a better bay area breakthrough for kids and families across our region, a new teen mental health treatment center is opening in the south bay. it really comes at a crucial time, experts say. 1 in 6 of our youth is struggling with a mental health disorder. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez gives us a tour of the facility, so this is one of the bedrooms. >> um, this is a doubles. there'll be two clients in this room. >> a clinical care team is getting this redwood city home ready to help support teens dealing with mental health disorders, depression, suicidal 8-80, self-harming behaviors. on wednesday, light fully behavioral health will open this six bed, 24 hour residential treatment program.

>> how many hours a night they're sleeping? and it just provides that kind of like structure and support that they need when they step down from the hospital, teens will have clinical oversight, family, individual and group therapy sessions in a home based setting . sometimes i think especially parents are struggling with a teen that's having having problems like they don't even know where to turn and may not even know that we exist, and that there's residential facilities like this. the teens are aged from 12 to 17 years old, and their treatment ranges from 30 to 45 days. not about like the hardships of life disappearing. it's about being able to cope better. >> a report published last year in the journal of the american medical association said in the last ten years, emergency room visits among young people for mental health reasons across doubled these general sessions are some of the first generation teens that have been raised with social media present from the beginning. >> and so we are seeing the effects of that, clinical psychologist nicole siegfried

in a statement today, the mayor's office said it will look for an alternate location. >> developing news alabama's supreme court has ruled that frozen embryos qualify as people, and it could have major implications for fertility treatments. now, under the state's law, embryos are considered children despite developmental stage or physical location. the decision comes after three couples filed wrongful death lawsuits after their frozen embryos were destroyed in an accident at a fertility clinic. now, this ruling could impact in vitro fertilization and infertility, advocates say it's unclear if there will be repercussions for people who decide to freeze their eggs. >> now, the court is saying that that's a person. can we freeze embryos? i don't know, can you freeze a person? what will happen to all of those embryos? >> the biden administration has not announced specific actions to respond to the ruling. however, the white house press secretary says the administration is working to enact more reproductive protections.

>> reporter new at 11 cleaner energy could be the key to preventing millions of asthma attacks in kids. that's according to a new report by the american lung association. it estimates nearly 3 million asthma attacks in u.s. kids could be prevented by 2050, but only if the country reaches its climate goals. this means the u.s. will need to aggressively transition to zero emission vehicles and non combustion energy. but experts say industries still have a long way to go to reach those goals. >> this weekend, san francisco will celebrate the year of the dragon, and tonight we're getting a look at the security plans for the festivities. there will be additional sfpd officers and deputies at the parade and around chinatown. community leaders say the year of the dragon is already looking very positive. start the first day of the new year, february 10th was actually the most significant level of visitors i think a lot of us have seen even before the pandemic, we had a nighttime level of activity on that saturday night that actually none of us can remember seeing,

wind damage. we have had numerous lightning strikes. the weather service is saying since yesterday over 400 lightning strikes. so definitely was an active day. the area of low pressure is filling in. it's starting to push towards the pacific northwest. sierra is still seeing snow, but everything will wind down one more day of some wet weather the last 36 hours. over an inch and a half in san francisco. so just over that in napa, santa rosa, getting close to that 8000/700 in oakland, san jose, you're in the rain shadow of the santa cruz mountains. same thing for livermore. so much lower 4000/100 in concord. looking at those temperatures right now in the 40s and the 50s, we are still going to have to deal with some wetrillionoadways and looking at a time lapse from our zephyr cove camera, the snow was really coming down earlier tonight, so we had that winter weather advisory going. it's still going through tomorrow morning. golden gate bridge camera wetrillionoadways headlines through tomorrow. unsettled pattern thursday and friday you do get a break. it's going to be a mix of sun and

clouds and sunday into monday we do have a chance of some showers coming in current system overnight into tomorrow is moderate level two showers, heavy at times. chance of isolated thunder. flooding is possible now. i expected that this will get dropped down to a one as we head towards the early afternoon tomorrow, but tomorrow morning we'll keep the wetrillionoadways around with those scattered showers. between 5 and 8 a.m. we will see some isolated pockets of downpours in the afternoon and still some scattered showers going at 4 p.m. you will notice, but this is all winding down by 7:00. additional rainfall. most of you will fall under that quarter of an inch category, but if you do get a thunderstorm, could see higher totals in the sierra. it's a winter weather advisory until 10 a.m. tomorrow, 4 to 6in of snow higher amounts for the peaks. your morning temperatures will look like this in the 30s to the 50s. i would carry the umbrella if i were you. showers will be pretty much scattered for tomorrow afternoon. 5060s. you'll certainly see some sun as well mixing in with the clouds.
