>> abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn is live at marina green, where the president's helicopter just landed. hi, suzanne. >> ama hundreds of people were out here a short while ago. we can tell you that. they were all here hoping to catch a glimpse of the president. and they definitely got a show. there were seven helicopters circling the area, landing on marina green. and then, of course, the president's motorcade sped off. now, we talked to a couple people, asked them what they thought about what the president is trying to accomplish here. >> something definitely exciting happening at marina green. >> lots of barricades and security and people eager for president joe biden's arrival. because i've never met a president before, so i'm seeing one up close is kind of cool. the president attends two fundraisers in san francisco, including a reception at the gordon getty family home, u.s. representative nancy pelosi, the former house speaker, is expected to be there. >> smart of him to come to come here where his where people are wanting to see him. >> president biden counting on

bay area supporters to boost his campaign chest. >> we are the atm for the political world, and there's a lot of folks here with a lot of money who are interested in politics. >> reporter the march primary is just around the corner. president biden reportedly has $130 million in the campaign chest, while the gop front runner, former president donald trump, has about $36 million and mounting legal bills have been a drain on his campaign funds. >> it's often the case in politics that the candidate with more money wins, but it's not always the case. um, and we've seen that on both sides of the aisle and in presidential campaigns. so it's a it's an indication of, of some enthusiasm for the biden campaign. but it's not necessarily a sign that trump's in trouble. and this is president biden's third visit to san francisco in the past six months. >> the last time he was here was in november for the apec summit, live in san francisco at marina

green. suzanne phan back to you. >> all right, suzanne, thank you. pro palestinian demonstrators are trying to send a message to president biden while he's in the bay area. this is a live look at a protest that's underway right now at alta plaza park in san francisco . protesters continue to call for a cease fire and an end to u.s. support of israel in the middle east conflict. it's the latest in a string of pro palestinian protests in san francisco this week. >> as we mentioned, at the top, president biden started his day in los angeles, where he touted another round of student loan forgiveness. the president announcing that roughly. 150,000 more borrowers will soon receive an email telling them they qualify for relief. those who qualify borrowed less than $12,000 for their education and have been paying the loans down for ten years at least, or more. >> so we never see this. there i have a don't touch me, don't touch me! where are you? i'm not going to touch this document. >> this a violent encounter in oakland interrupts a news conference by mayor shengtao, the mayor and other city leaders

gathered to announce a new grant aimed at improving public safety. when things just got out of hand very quickly, abc seven news reporter tim johns shows you what happened. hey, get this. >> get this, get this, get this, get this chaos on the streets of oakland wednesday morning. >> stop! please stop! please get this. please stop! please provoking. >> while mayor xiang tao and other city leaders announced a new grant aimed at increasing public safety recall xiang tao protesters clashed with some of the mayor's supporters. >> it was harrowing. it was terrifying. um, no one should go through it. and this better not happen again. the tension getting so bad at one point that seneca scott, a pro-recall protester, says he was physically assaulted. i was pushed several times before i was punched. that wasn't the first time i was, uh, touch. i was aggressively shoved from behind the news conference. >> eventually moving farther down the road while the pandemonium continued nearby. the mayor, taking a moment to respond to the craziness.

>> i just want to say i love every single one of you. you all with signs. you all here standing behind us. this is our democracy. >> the new grant is a $3.5 million investment in collaboration with oakland based organization family bridges, which runs a safety ambassador program in chinatown. the new money will be used to expand the program into other areas. >> it's important because, um, things are a little bit out of control right now. um, there's a shortage of policing. there's a shortage of quality relationships between merchants, between citizens, between people walking on the street. >> while many of the protesters say they were out here for several reasons, one of the main ones they tell us is that the city of oakland lost other grant money last year. that happened back in september, when the east bay city lost millions of dollars in other public safety funding after it failed to submit an application to the state on time. the blunder received heavy criticism. >> um, the money just based thing handed out to us waiting

us to file some paperwork. i mean, how hard is that in 2023, data shows a spike in violent crimes, vehicle thefts and robberies in oakland with everything going on, mayor tao says grants like these are one way to help stop the violence. >> over the past year, we have invested in a robust police department and placed more police officers on the street to conduct patrols and special operations in oakland. >> tim johns, abc7 news. >> well, some parts of the bay area are starting to dry out. this is a gorgeous shot. a live picture from our camera on mount sutro in san francisco. we've had a mix of sun clouds. even still, some showers today. >> that is a stunning shot. abc seven news meteorologist andy patel is here. our cindy, our seasonal rainfall totals must be looking pretty good right now. >> absolutely. dan and ama for most areas, we're above average right now. i want to show you another equally gorgeous shot from our golden gate bridge camera, but you can see some vertical development in those clouds as we still have some moisture on live doppler seven i'm going to take you in where

we are tracking some scattered showers right now right around saint helena. 128 silverado trail. so watch out for a flood warning in effect until sonoma for sonoma county, until 9 p.m. tonight. those small streams still seeing flooding and that will continue through this evening around sears point highway 37. seeing those showers . and in the south bay, we have one little pocket right around cupertino, 280. so as we widen the picture here, this system has been bringing snow showers to the sierra that's winding down, showers to the bay area, winding down in just a couple of hours. so here we go. timing it out for you by 7 p.m. most of those showers are going through and it is over, but until then, we'll keep it as a level one through this evening. scattered showers, brief downpours, slick areas for the commute. and when we look at our rainfall percent of average sfo, 106. san jose 137% above average in santa rosa and san francisco, oakland. you're the only one at 11.58 that's still running at 91% of

average. now last year, remember all those atmospheric rivers? we were well above average in the rainfall department. hopefully we'll continue to move upward in oakland as well. amma. >> yeah we hope. all right. thank you so much. sandhya. the wharf in capitola took a beating during last year's storms and tonight residents will get to share their thoughts on what it might look like when it reopens this fall. but as abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey explains, it's unclear whether two buildings that have been there for decades will remain the sun may be shining, but storms are still top of mind. >> capitola boat and bait and the wharf house restaurant have never recovered from the damage caused by monster waves. in 2023, the city has deemed these buildings unsafe and they face demolition, devastating. >> yeah, i couldn't believe we were. we had hopes that our building was able to survive and we get news that it's being torn down. we walked off the wharf january third, 2023. >> so it's been about 14 months walking off. >> did you ever think that that might be the last time?

>> no. you don't think those things, but that thought may soon be reality for these longtime tenants. >> chloe woodmansee, with the city of capitola, said the damage was extensive and safety led to the difficult decision. >> our building official here at the city and our city engineer did an extensive review of the buildings. i do know there is structural damage to the foundation and some of the walls are caving in and i believe both the buildings bait and boat manager david morris says the coastal commission may be able to trump the city's decision and save the structures. >> but after decades in business, it's hard for him to look to the future. what future? yeah because we can't afford, you know, a $500,000 building or $1 million building out there. >> we just can't afford that. so what future would we have if i can't get coastal commission to work with us and help us out? >> so what's next for the wharf? its future may come down to the opinions of the community. residents will get to share what they want to see on the wharf at a town hall. we got some public opinion ahead of the meeting,

perhaps a bait shop, a little cafe of some kind, some place that leaves us with a destination. >> what i don't want to see happen is that there be a lot of construction and trying to turn the capitola wharf into a fisherman's wharf with all kinds of little shops. >> i don't want to see them pull down the building. we don't need you now. that's that's a big joke. >> the wharf is on track to reopen this fall, but whether or not these businesses will be there, then is uncertain. in capitola, dustin dawsey abc seven news the state is pausing waymos attempt to expand its operations in california to the state's public utilities commission, is suspending waymo's expansion into san mateo county and los and los angeles county, as well as it further reviews the request that the pause comes as san mateo county leaders protest this expansion, claiming waymo needs to establish better communication with the area's public services. >> first, they need to do a better job really communicating. >> and i think one of the issues

health issues. public health officials say the county will continue to work toward a fair and competitive contract to maintain essential services for the community, and there's this new labor department report shows the number of major strikes jumped 43% in 2023. >> the most work stoppages in america in more than 20 years, and all more than 462,000 workers hit the picket lines at some point last year, contributing to nearly 17 million days of work lost, a significantly more than the year before 2022. it appears that labor unrest could continue into this year as well, with possible strikes at anheuser-busch as well as another major hollywood strike potentially the contract for around 60,000 union technicians, artisans and craftspeople expires in july. >> a trial involving one of rock music's most legendary bands is now underway in new york city. three men are accused of trying to sell about 100 pages of song lyrics from the eagles iconic album, hotel california.

prosecutors say the defendants peddled the pages while knowing their ownership history was shaky at best. eagles co-founder don henley, who wants to recover the manuscripts, is expected to be the key witness. the men have pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy to possess stolen property. >> apple is ready to take a bite of the sports gaming world today. the tech giant launched its first sports app called apple. sports analysts say it will allow users to quickly compare teams stats and live betting odds. sports betting is just a booming industry, the annual report, released by american gaming association yesterday, says the industry posted a record $11 billion in revenue for 2023. we've got storm damage and guess what? >> so does southern california next. the massive mudslides that closed a 12 mile stretch of a state highway

after a section of the road collapsed on monday. the section is between old canyon road and main street near sunol. caltrain says it will assess the damage on friday to determine if it can reopen to one way traffic until the rest of the road is repaired . >> down in southern california, caltrans crews are trying to contain a mudslide that happened in santa paula, which is near highway 150. the massive landslide forced the road along a 12 mile stretch to shut down in both directions. because of this week's storm that just pummeled the state. officials are now working to clean up the

debris before that road reopens. >> some dry weather will help as people recover from all this % least a couple of days. >> let's get to abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya. >> yeah, it is going to last for a few days. believe it or not, you're not going to have to worry about umbrellas again until later on this weekend. so ama and dan, let's take a look at live doppler seven right now. the sierra had its share of some snow. we had some rain here in the bay area, as you know, but all of this is starting to wind down, which is exactly what we want to see a break after the last several days of the wet weather, looking at our local radar, we are still tracki some light to moderate showers. i'm going to get you into street level radars. silverado trail. you will notice some light to moderate shower activity just northeast of there as well. about a half an inch per hour for the rainfall rate. moving across highway 101. healdsburg. heading across 128. we are also seeing some wet weather right now, so take it easy out there behind the system dense fog advisory going up for solano

county 2 to 10 a.m. tomorrow. visibility a quarter mile or less, which means hazardous driving conditions. if you are out and about. early this morning, you know, we had some dense fog this morning as well. temperatures anywhere from the 40s at clear lake to the 60s in san jose. and it is a gorgeous sunset from san jose right now. tomorrow some dense fog and then sunshine. friday and saturday it's going to be warming up as we head towards sunday evening and into monday morning. we do have a chance of some showers. it is looking like we will likely see some wet weather. current system level one through this evening. scattered showers, brief downpours, slick areas for the commute. so just be careful all. there will be some areas where you need to turn on your wipers. this evening, and it'll just be for a brief bit. and then those showers are gone. so by the time we head into tomorrow morning, we're just looking at areas of fog will be thick out towards the delta. and then look at this by noontime. enjoying sunshine here in the bay area. your morning temperatures will be in the 30s and the 40s. you will need to

bundle up and give yourself that extra time for the commute. because of the fog and the low visibility in some areas, it's going to be just like this morning tomorrow, afternoons warmer, upper 50s to the mid 60s. try 66 in san jose, 62 in santa rosa. we're going to fast forward to your weekend plans. a cutoff low is going to spin off the coast. and then as it makes its tour, its entrance towards southern california, we're going to start to notice some showers developing sunday afternoon between four and about 10 p.m. is when we'll see some wet weather. and then going into monday morning, still looking at showers, the sierra looking at a mix of rain and snow. the accuweather seven day forecast looking like this tomorrow morning. watch out for the fog tomorrow. the rest of the day it's going to be sunshine. and then friday increasing clouds. but it is warmer. the warming continues. on saturday we have low 70s well above average on around the bay inland mid 60s coastal level 1 p.m. showers sunday morning. showers mainly
