hills, where the president attended this third and final fundraising event. zach yeah, and that fundraising event ended just a couple of hours ago, and we're now starting to hear word about what the president discussed inside there. >> that included some jabs at donald trump and pointing blame to the republican party for many of the issues faced at the border. but like you said, one of the biggest things to get attention of his visit here in the bay area is that meeting with the navalny family and the response, he says, is coming to russia nearly a week has passed since the death of alexei navalny, the longtime russian opposition leader and critic of vladimir putin died in prison at 47 years old. a russian medical certificate says he died of natural causes, but his family and allies accused putin of killing him. >> he was a man of incredible courage and it's amazing how his wife and daughter are emulating that. >> while on his california fundraising trip, president joe biden met with navalny's wife and daughter, yulia and dasha navalny. dasha is a student at stanford. the white house released these images of the

meeting. in his remarks after the president said a response to navalny's death is coming. we're going to be announcing the sanctions against putin, who is responsible for his death tomorrow. following the thursday meeting with navalny's wife and daughter, biden made his way to this los altos mansion for a campaign fundraiser. the event, hosted by real estate developer bob klein, klein's wife and former state controller steve wesley. tickets for the event going for as much as $100,000, with the cheapest at around 6000. anyone wanting a photo with the president will pay at least 25,000. well they should come here because that's where the money is. >> i want to get support. they got to go and get financed. so same thing with trump or any other politician. >> as the biden motorcade made its way to the los altos hills event, protesters calling for a ceasefire in gaza took to the side of the road. >> we're out here to show that we want peace and we want it now. we need a ceasefire. >> i would be anywhere i could be, but i live here, and i want him to know that the people here are as as upset about it, as

everywhere else. >> still others who live and work in the los altos community were excited by the visit. >> being that i work in los altos, i was thinking where at in los altos? but of course not down here downtown. i'm downtown, but it's still exciting to know that he's here. >> since the president is meeting with the navalny family and his remarks following that word came from a treasury spokesperson that the u.s. on friday will impose over 500 sanctions on russia, its enablers and its war machine, as the administration marks two years since russia invaded ukraine. so a lot of developments coming from the president's visit here in the bay area, he took off from sfo just after four to head back to the white house for this weekend. he will be hosting the nation's governors right now, live in los altos. zach fuentes, abc seven news. all right, zach, thank you so much. >> the white house is confirming president biden may place new restrictions on asylum seekers to address the crisis on the southern border. the potential executive action would restrict the ability of people who enter the u.s. illegally to seek

asylum. the idea could put president biden at odds with his own party. some democrats compared such a crackdown to trump era policies. the white house says there will not be any true reform until there is action from congress. house republicans recently killed a bipartisan on border security deal. >> london breeds hope of holding on to the san francisco mayor's job may be in some trouble. a new san francisco chronicle poll found that 71% of those surveyed either disapprove or strongly disapprove of breed's job performance. the poll shows. former supervisor mark farrell, who just announced his candidacy last week with a slight lead. it's important to note here that 38% of voters are still undecided in the race. that will be decided in november, a san francisco hardware store is changing the way it does business in hopes of stopping shoplifters. >> abc seven news reporter luz pena went to fredrikson hardware , where employees say they've been forced to take matters into their own hands to save the store and their jobs.

with large bags, they have to keep them up front. >> it's really sad. >> this is the literally the new world that we're in. >> a shoplifting is not just an issue inside this store down the street, the owner of pacana has been a victim of crime twice. >> you can't really do anything. the insurance did not cover that and then who's going to call the police? no the city? no, it's only me. >> our abc seven news data team looked into sfpd incident data and found that in 2023, there were 81 larceny theft, shoplifting incidents in the marina neighborhood, which is the area the hardware store is located in. that's higher than every year going back to 2019. have you filed police reports in this? >> that doesn't really do anything. supervisor catherine stephani represents this district. >> in a statement, her office said in part, this situation is tragic and embarrassed for our city and it's all the more reason to get serious about solving our police staffing crisis. business owners say they

can't keep waiting. >> our block is a neighborhood watch. neighbors can text us, or they can call the number that's on the sign. >> customers and residents in the area say they want city officials to take action. the city has money for a lot of other things, but it doesn't have money to secure our storefronts, to secure our streets. >> that's a real problem in san francisco. >> luz pena, abc seven news. in the meantime, a group of citizens and organizations in the east bay is demand ing the alameda county board of supervisors to declare a state of emergency in oakland. >> at a news conference today, the coalition for community engagement slammed mayor shengtao, accusing her of failed leadership in addressing crime in the town. the group wants county officials to step in and recall the mayor. they also say the city needs access to more resources. a new police chief and more police officers. >> we got a band together. our city is a refugees place for all us to have our souls met and our needs needs to be met in 2023,

violent crime, including robberies, theft and homicides in oakland surged more than 21% in the past eight. >> mayor tao has said that crime was rising before she took office. >> a longtime san jose state professor is on leave after a clash with pro-palestinian protesters this is edited video provided by a bystander shows history professor jonathan roth pulling out his cell phone and pointing it at a protester. now, when the protester reaches for the phone, roth pushes his hand away. then other protesters then confront him. university officials have acknowledged the incident and confirm someone has been put on administrative leave . there were no injuries, arrests or charges filed. >> a project that will bring more housing to the south bay is moving forward as planned. it revelop the berryessa flea marketitin san jose, station. there was talk of changing the plans, even building less housing. but as abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey explains,

things are back on track. a win win doesn't happen every day in business, but that's the case at the berryessa flea market. >> if you can't make progress, then you're just standing still and in the development business you only succeed if you actually are building something. >> so now we can roll up our sleeves and work together to start implementing the project. >> the plan remains to redevelop the flea market into thousands of homes, commercial and office space and an urban village. but this yellow portion has been our hang-up flea market land use consultant eric shanower says acquiring half of this development to be office based may be problematic for the city. >> those blocks don't have any development potential and won't for a long time, if ever. so we have to work through that. but we have a commitment from the council member to take another look at the commercial uses. it's part of an agreement with the city and the flea market property owners. >> so is requiring that builders remedy cannot be used to change the plans to reduce office space or housing. builders remedy was designed to get housing projects

approved in cities deemed by the state to not have enough housing. as of january, san jose is in compliance because it's a there's a large public investment to build a bart station at that site. >> it's really important that we maximize the density there, build a large number of housing units that will include affordable housing, and also hold out property there to build commercial space in the future. >> the final part of the deal is for the city to help with other costs for development, cohen says. commercial properties coming to this new project will likely be assessed fees to help cover bonds needed to build infrastructure. for now, development of this project is still a ways away. the flea market will remain open until at least 2026. in san jose. dustin dawsey, abc seven news up next, a celebration at nasa the odysseus spacecraft lands on the moon. >> this one was a real nail biter, though it sure was. >> and p-g-and-e's reports massive profits today could be a boon for investors, but what about ratepayers? abc seven news

manned mission set for 2026. this video of the lunar landing is a simulation nasa hopes to release. video of the actual landing soon. >> new details. abc news has learned the network outage that affected thousands of at&t customers was caused by a software update gone wrong. the service went down about 1:00 this morning. you may have been affected by this. more than 74,000 customers were impacted. service was finally restored about noon today. other wireless services like verizon and t-mobile were not affected. sources tell abc seven news there was nothing nefarious or malicious about what happened. >> p-g-and-e's profits are soaring and customers say they're not happy about that. in the wake of recent rate hikes this morning, p-g-and-e's announced profits surged more than $2.2 billion for nearly 25% in 2023. it comes after customers say their electricity bills have nearly doubled over the last year. the utility reform network, or turn, says

the company profits came directly from customers pockets and called them outrageous. a spokesperson for turn says there needs to be action to prevent prices from rising further. >> we need a cap on rate increases to be no more than the cost of living adjustment provided by social security. >> p-g-and-e's sent a statement saying they're focused on funding new ways to work to prevent future bill increases. >> speaking of funding, a plan to raise tolls on the golden gate bridge took a step forward today. the golden gate bridge board of directors held a public hearing on a plan to raise tolls each of the next five years. the board is considering four options the lowest increase would raise tolls gradually. to $10.50 by 2028, the highest option would raise tolls to 1125 by that same year. these numbers are for fast track customers and could be higher depending on how you pay the golden gate bridge district relies heavily on tolls of course, to operate and maintain the span. the san

francisco municipal transit agency is looking at ways to increase revenue without raising rates. the agency is laying out its options at a public meeting, which is actually happening right now. the sfmta proposes eliminate the 50 cent clipper card discount by raising parking fines by 5, raising the cost of residential parking permits, and reinstating taxi fees. muni faces. a $12.7 million deficit over the next two years because, in part of revenue from bus fares and parking that is still not at pre-pandemic levels, the mammal van is celebrating 20 years of serving marginalized women in san francisco. >> the mobile unit performs hundreds of mammograms per year, specifically for underserved populations of women. >> being of a woman of color and 66 years of age, i wouldn't just get up in the morning and say, i'm going to go get a mammogram today. you know? but because this van is accessible to us,

snowpack was only 28% on january 1st. today it's 86% of average. if you are heading up to the mountains, you're good to go. it's going to be nice this weekend. you can see the snow capped sierra there from zephyr cove and here in the bay area. we are enjoying plenty of sun as we look back towards the golden gate bridge and the sun getting ready to set, there is a storm off the coast, but it's just going to meander in the pacific for a few days before it gets here. so on live doppler seven, all is quiet. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. san jose by the way, got up into the low 70s. today, east bay hills cameras showing you nothing but blue skies tomorrow. mostly cloudy, milder saturday spring like warmth is coming your way and late sunday night into monday. showers will make a return. all you have to worry about tomorrow morning is some patchy fog. there was some thick fog this morning in solano county, the north bay valleys. tomorrow is going to be patchy and then those high clouds will be coming through. so that will just filter the sun throughout the day. but the temperatures will continue to go up tomorrow morning. they're going down 30s
