washington tonight, but today san francisco and los altos both were the center of politics. and the president s foreign policy. good evening. thank you for joining us. >> i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. we start with san francisco right in the middle of the escalating tensions between the united states and russia. president biden met with alexei navalny's wife and daughter today at the fairmont hotel. >> navalny died last week in a russian penal colony and was the leader of the opposition movement against russian president vladimir putin, navalny's daughter is a student at stanford and his wife yulia has vowed to carry on his mission. >> afterward, president biden spoke about the meeting and how the united states is going to respond to navalny's death. he

was a man of incredible courage, and it's amazing how his wife and daughter are emulating that. >> and we're going to be announcing the sanctions against putin, who is responsible for his death tomorrow. >> more than 500 targets in russia are going to face sanctions. so we're getting an idea of what that might look like global sanctions, the oil price cap, the export control laws that we've put in place have weakened russia's war machine and these restrictions will get significantly tighter in the coming days as we and our partners announce massive new sanctions packages designed, among other things, to strangle russia's effort at sanctions evasion. >> saturday is the second anniversary of russia's invasion of ukraine. the attack led to an initial round of sanctions that the treasury department says caused russia's economy to shrink by about 2% in 2022.

>> after his meeting with the navalny family, the president headed to a campaign fundraiser in los altos. there, he doubled down on his pledge to block any federal abortion ban, according to the la times. the president said if he's reelected and with control of congress, he'll pass roe v wade into law. it comes as now three providers in alabama are pausing their in vitro fertilization services. earlier this week, the state supreme court ruling ruling gave embryos the same rights as children and at least one alabama couple is having to leave the state to try to save their shot at pregnancy. >> this is been about a two years in the making of us trying and i just did not feel comfortable with all the uncertainty, um, of not knowing what would happen with these embryos. >> and i just honestly did not want them to be stored in alabama. so we've decided to go to texas. >> is the alabama ruling could likely make it all the way to

your planner. fog and high clouds. tomorrow morning. numbers will be primarily in the 40s, noontime, mostly cloudy, and in the afternoon it is going to get milder, low to upper 60s, cooler in the evening with temperatures in the 50s. so you want a little spring feeling there. hey we have these kinds of temperatures coming up which is numbers in the 70s. i'll show you when a full look at the weekend forecast plus a look at when we return to winter. coming right up, dan. >> okay, sandy, thanks a lot. let's move to the east bay now. animal specialist at the renowned oakland zoo are taking care of a sadly mistreated big cat. state wildlife experts have rescued a young tiger with a number of broken bones from a privately owned facility. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone is here with the story. jerry, this is hard to hear. it certainly is. >> i'd like to say what happened to this tiger den is extremely rare, but experts that i talk with say not so much an exotic pet. trades are still a major problem in this case, though. a tiger is now getting proper care here in the bay area. this is

the paw of an eight month old female tiger who was rescued by the california department of fish and wildlife. then, as you can see here, taken to the oakland zoo, where she will get proper treatment. what you may not realize in this video is that this young tiger is dealing with major injuries. unfortunate >> this animal has at least ten fractures that we could diagnose . most of them are at least a month old. >> her bones are decalcified from eating an inappropriate diet and fortunately, she's really a symbol of a whole industry where people can buy and sell a beautiful young tiger like this. >> keep them in appropriate housing. >> the california department of fish and wildlife won't say where the young tiger was, who had her, or how they learned about her due to pending legal issues. bobby brink is with the lions, tigers and bears animal rescue in san diego county. she says cases like this are still very common even after the big cat public safety act went into

effect in 2022, one that banned private ownership of big cats, including cubs, as pets. >> this is not only an international problem, it's a huge problem here in the united states. >> they don't get the proper nutrition. then they're bounced around from person to person to get their photo taken and most times the people taking care of them. good intentions are not. they don't know what they're doing. and this is what happens. >> officials will only say that this tiger was in a privately owned facility in the western united states. now, though, she is getting the care she needs. >> the main issue right now is that her right femur is broken really close to her hip, and it healed at a 60 degree abnormal angle. and it's still trying to heal because she doesn't have enough calcium to heal appropriately. luckily for her, most of her fractures are chronic and partially healed. and so we think with intervention we can get her to have a good quality of life. pretty tiger there. >> veterinarians are hopeful that this female tiger can make a full recovery, but do say they

believe that she will likely deal with arthritis when she gets older. dan ama, now back to you okay. >> all right jr thank you. now to america's historic return to the moon a houston based company successfully guided an unmanned lunar lander to its surface the first time the united states has done so in more than 50 years. it marks a milestone in space exploration and kicks off what we may start to call the lunar economy. >> it's really fascinating, actually. but as abc news reporter jacqueline lee explains, the mission did not go off entirely as planned. >> it was a nail biter. the countdown to touchdown was watched around the world. lunar lander odysseus making history, marking the first time the u.s. landed on the surface of the moon in more than 50 years. >> welcome to the moon, nasa administrator bill nelson, emphasizing how historic this moment is, calling it the landing of a lifetime. >> odysseus has taken the moon. >> this feat is a giant leap

forward for all of humanity. city. >> the journey to safely land on the moon was a bit rocky initially delayed and battling communications issues, the spacecraft relying on autonomous controls in the final descent launched on a spacex rocket carrying a bounty of nasa instruments to embark on a new adventure in science and innovation. it was a week long journey to the moon. intuitive machines i am one odysseus, affectionately known as odie, launched to the moon last thursday. houston based company intuitive machines built the us lunar lander and is partnering with nasa, the space agency confirming it is paying $118 million to get its experiments on the moon. during this mission , part of a program to kick start the lunar economy, we need to know as much as we can about that environment to sustain life and so that we can get not only human presence on the lunar surface, but that we can get the science and the knowledge and the data back that we need to change our world. >> quite frankly, intuitive

machines partnered with san jacinto community college, allowing students to help build the lander. >> i had everyone's name etched on the bottom feet of the landing gear so that their names will be indelibly in printed on the surface of the moon. when we touch down softly. >> this marks the third attempt to land on the moon. this year, nasa's peregrine mission failed because of a fuel leak, forcing it to return back to earth and burn up on reentry. japan's slim mission stuck the landing, but was upside down, making it impossible to deploy its solar arrays. the spacecraft has seven days to finish its mission, gathering both sunlight and earth views. jacqueline lee, abc news, los angeles. >> san francisco mayor london breed may be in for an uphill battle for reelection. that's according to a new san francisco chronicle poll. the poll found that 71% of those surveyed either disapprove or strongly disapprove of breed's performance. and that's translating to fewer potential votes, the poll shows. former san francisco interim mayor mark

farrell in the lead. mayor breed trails with 18, and 38% of voters are still undecided. we spoke with abc seven news insider phil matier, who says mayor breed will need to make drastic changes in the city to turn the vote in her favor. if you just doubled down and you really got tough, if you really said we are going to do something, we're going to finally make a breakthrough because people aren't seeing a difference. phil also says there's still time for numbers to change. obviously, with eight months left before the election in november, new details as abc has learned, the network outage that affected thousands of at&t customers was caused by a software update gone wrong. >> the service went down about one this morning. more than 74,000 customers were impacted. service was finally restored around noon. other wireless services like verizon and t-mobile weren't affected, sources tell abc news. there was nothing nefarious or malicious about the incident

ignited a big day on wall street, the south bay company reported huge earnings fueled by the boom in artificial intelligence. the dow jones and s&p 500 set record highs. the nasdaq enjoyed its best day of trading since february of last year, thanks to a massive bounce that saw nvidia stock rise by 15, ceo jensen huang became the 21st richest person on bloomberg's list. he's worth around $68 billion reddit's long anticipated ipo initial public offering of stock is finally going to happen next month. >> the san francisco company filed today with the sec. while it is a popular social media platform, this could be a good test as to how it stacks up to the likes of facebook and twitter. reddit might benefit from a deal that just struck with google to make its content available to train the search engine's artificial intelligence models. coming up, two young kids found dead near the shasta dam, the circumstances becoming more clear tonight. >> plus, the study on your

story residential building, then flames eventually spread to another property. residents were seen fleeing to their balconies, where some were rescued by firefighters. officials don't know what started the fire, but they believe the rapid spread was due to materials used in the building structure. the two children, sadly, are dead after falling into the sacramento river near the shasta dam. >> the shasta sheriff's office says the kids slipped down into riverbank this morning, and part of a small landslide, and they were hurt by the rocks and debris and were later pronounced dead. there had been they had been at a local campground when this happened. >> this is a camping area and the people were at the camping area, so it has nothing to do with any field trip groups or that type of thing. >> the county sheriff's office says this is still an ongoing investigation, but very sad indeed. a new study shows walking each day can lower risks of heart failure in women, but it may not take as many steps as you think. finding from the women's health initiative

suggests walking an average of 3600 steps per day can lower the chances of women developing heart failure by about 26. this mainly affects older women between the ages of 63 and 99. you can get daily steps from moderate to vigorous physical activity such as walking, running and of course, other aerobic exercise. >> as we are in primary election season. and one big race to watch is for california's 16th district in u.s. congress. >> and a public forum tonight had many of the candidates facing questions from future voters. >> the event was student run making for tonight's abc seven news, building a better bay area breakthrough. >> and while three of the front runners were not there, it was a chance for students to get a real up close look at the democratic process in action. >> abc7 news south bay reporter lauren martinez was there with the highlights. this is not a mock high school debate. >> on thursday, a group of students organized and hosted a forum for silicon valley's congressional race. >> no, these are for you guys to, like, respond. yes. no.

>> maybe malik to call along with two other high school juniors, held the forum in los altos. six out of 11 candidates running to replace representative anna eshoo participated. >> i'm surprised by how receptive the candidates have been. honestly um, it's great to see that they're willing to hear young people and willing to come out for young people, to these young students say while they may not hold a vote, they hold a voice. we want to make sure that people are aware of who's their representative and that young people are holding them accountable because, um, their votes, um, their bills, their legislation is also going to impact us. >> district 16 includes parts of san mateo and santa clara counties candidates. >> this is a quick reminder that all of you must remain seated when answering questions. >> the students streamed and recorded the forum on their organization's social media channel, the los altos institution. we look at right now, some people can say it's a dreary time, but i say it's a time where youth can really come back and take back our power. the students said this was the first congressional primary

debate held by high school students. they hope their involvement in inspires others. >> we really are trying to send a message that anyone can do it. if high school students can get involved, so can really any voters. >> each candidate pointed out they're appreciative. the students organized this forum. they started planning back in december in los altos. lauren martinez abc seven news. now to the oscars. >> voted starting voting started today among the academy, but many people have felt too important. names were snubbed. margot robbie didn't earn a best actress nomination for her role in the barbie movie the film's director, greta gerwig, was also off the list of names for best director. now gerwig is talking about it for the first time in an interview with time magazine, she said in part, quote, of course i wanted it for margot, but i'm just happy we all get to be there together. gerwig is nominated for best adapted screenplay. the film is also in the running for best picture. you can watch the 2024 oscars, hosted by jimmy kimmel on sunday, march 10th, right here on abc seven. >> we'll find out. yes. all

right, time now to find out what the next few days has in store in terms of the weather. >> after a really warm day today, i know incredible abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is here. sandhya >> yeah, it felt good to be outside right? ama and dan. and right now, as we go outside, i do want to show you some live pictures from our tower cameras. you take your pick of the best shot because obviously they're all looking good. uh- skies are pretty clear right now. that changes overnight tonight as an area of low pressure is spinning off the coast. cut off from the main jet stream, but it will be sending us some of those higher clouds out ahead of it. so radar returns off the northern california coast for us. we remain dry for the time being. these clouds will be coming in tomorrow morning and then just thickening throughout the day right now all is quiet here locally. the temperatures in the 40s and the 50s. just a sign that we are still in winter. it is going to get cool tomorrow morning. a gorgeous view from our golden gate bridge camera tomorrow mostly cloudy and milder. saturday we have spring like warmth coming our way and

late sunday night into monday the showers will make a return. so let's go hour by hour. tomorrow morning at 5:00. temperatures primarily in the 40s. you see those high clouds coming in? yeah, they'll filter the sunshine, but temperatures will rise very nicely. today. we had 60s, even some low 70s in places like san jose. tomorrow afternoon it's going to be pretty mild at lunchtime time. might want to take your lunch outside tomorrow at 3:00. already in the upper 60s for our warmest spots. so first thing tomorrow morning, 40s and 50s for most of you. but there will be some 30s in pockets and definitely we'll see some patches of fog, but it's not going to be anything like this morning where we saw quite a bit of fog and it was dense. as we look at our afternoon highs tomorrow, low to upper 60s, mostly cloudy as i mentioned. and now we're going to really take a look at what's ahead for saturday. i mean, this is going to feel like spring when you have temperatures in the low 70s. even some mid 70s showing up for the afternoon hours, uh- in time for the year of the

dragon, the chinese new year parade happening on saturday evening. you couldn't ask for better weather. 5:00 shortly before the parade gets underway. it's going to be nice and mild. 62 degrees sun, clouds mix at 7 p.m. temperature dropping down into the upper 50s. later on at night, and for the black joy parade happening in on sunday in oakland. ama is going to be there. julian glover, zach fuentes really just as nice. just a few more clouds though. 11:00 dry skies, 59 degrees parade gets underway at 1230. it's going to be in the low 60s, and by 2 p.m. getting up into the mid 60s, just as you get used to the spring like and the nice weather sunday night we get a reality check. we're going back to winter. it continues into monday and so that's when we'll see a rain snow mix in the sierra, and certainly rain here in the bay area. so here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. it's a milder afternoon saturday springlike warmth mid 60s to low 70s. maybe even a mid 70 degree reading there. a chance of some showers
