it's going to be a colorful weekend in the bay area with a celebration of some of the cultures that make this region one of the most diverse places around. there's the chinese new year parade, billed as the biggest outside asia, and the black joy parade that will have people dancing in the streets. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. the black joy parade is on sunday, but first up is the chinese new year parade in san francisco. up to a million people are expected to attend tomorrow night. >> abc seven news reporter tim johns has a look at the last minute preparations, as well as a special event tonight in chinatown down at san francisco's pier 54. >> last minute preparations are underway for the past several weeks, stephanie mufson and her

team have been hard at work making the floats for the city's chinese new year parade. >> we start our design process in like october or november, and then fabrication starts in december, and then we really get crank in. >> this year is the year of the dragon, the most important animal in the chinese zodiac calendar, a fact that mufson says has inspired her to make this year's floats. some of the most intricate ever done people come from all over to see this parade, which is the largest of its kind anywhere in the world outside of asia. this year, spectators will get a chance to see 19 different floats before the parade. hundreds gathered friday night for the annual miss chinatown usa pageant, an event that draws contestants from around the country inspires young women of the next generation to really empower them to come back and give back to their community, especially here in san francisco. >> chinatown. the pageant isn't the only thing drawing in visitors, though. >> tony lao is the vice president of the chinese chamber of commerce. he says they expect over 1 million people to come out for the weekend's

festivities. >> my understanding is that most of the hotels here are fully booked already. we have a lot of people here, a lot of tourists here definitely is going to help us with the business in chinatown and in downtown. >> lao tells me the story of the chinese in america is directly linked with the history of san francisco. one reason he believes why this weekend's parade is always so successful. i want people to understand our culture, enjoy our our celebration, and then also have fun. all the more. reason mufson wants the floats to be perfect, becoming part of the city's culture and making sure everyone has a good time. >> there's an electricity in the air that you can feel that's really unlike anything else, and that's that's actually the moment when i'm like, okay, this is we did it. it's good. everyone's happy. it's great. >> in san francisco. tim johns, bens at 6 p.m. atecond andparade market streets, then ends at avenue. street and columbus >> all festivities begin at 5:15 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m. well it is going to be an exciting

weekend in oakland. >> the seventh annual black joy parade kicks off sunday, and here's a little of what you can expect. the parade celebrates the black experience and highlights its positive influence throughout the bay area's diverse community. it is the centerpiece of many meaningful events throughout the week leading up, including finance, seminars, brunches, small business markets, and open mics for creatives. today, three community leaders were honored at what's called icons among us for their work to uplift communities. one honoree says black joy lives long after the moment joy is internalized. >> it comes from a part of your being that is connected to experience. and so to be able to think of african americans coming together to celebrate the victory and the suffering as a part of who we are, is just a phenomenal idea and experience. >> and you can experience the joy sunday with live entertainment and loads of activities for the entire family. and as we said, the black joy parade celebrates the entire black experience. the

parade is partnering with black infant health, an organization that empowers pregnant and mothering black women. this year's theme is the redefinition of a hustler, which is quite fitting. >> this year. it's all about the hustle. >> nobody hustles like mama for sure with the black joy parade and why it's so important for black infant health to get the message out to the community, see what greater joy is there than bringing a healthy, beautiful baby into the world. >> i mean, that speaks to anything joyful, but definitely when it comes to black joy is welcoming another generation that's coming in. so it was a perfect partnership because this is a family oriented event, and we wanted to bring awareness not only to the program, but just to the issues of what's going on in the black maternal infant space when it comes to maternal mortality and infant mortality in our black community. >> black infant health is a safe, culturally affirming space

temperatures in the low to mid 60s. so a pretty mild one for your sunday for the festivities and also for the chinese new year parade tomorrow right here in san francisco at 5:00. sunshine, mild weather, 64 degrees. you know it typically rains on the parade, but not this year. it is going to cool off later on in the evening down to the upper 50s. anything but cool. tomorrow here in the bay area, here's a taste of spring sampling of your temperatures saturday. santa rosa 73 degrees napa 71. in the low 70s from oakland to livermore, san francisco 68 and the high temperature for san jose 74 degrees. big changes are coming after tomorrow. we'll be back with that forecast coming up. dan okay, sandy, thanks a lot in the east bay, saint james road is back open after being shut down for a couple of hours due to a downed tree in piedmont. >> a large tree alongside the road fell over this was about 3:00 this afternoon. a people were asked to avoid that area while public works crews removed the tree from the street. a

pretty big job. they cleared it and the road reopened just after 5 p.m. so a couple of hours of work. a federal judge has paused a lawsuit affecting san francisco's ability to clear homeless encampments. that's while the supreme court decides a similar issue in oregon. that leaves in place a preliminary injunction that prohibits san francisco from clearing homeless encampments unless it has enough shelter beds available. san francisco's city attorney says the pause keeps the city from wasting resources on a lawsuit that may be invalid in a few months. >> frightening incident today in san jose, highlighting just how dangerous power lines can be. it involved two men inside a cherry picker working on an apartme building nearhe intersection of zanker road and vallejo street. firefighters say they were 40ft up when one of them hit his helmet on a high voltage power line. that worker suffered severe burns to his upper body, but rescuers say his helmet likely saved his life. the lift couldn't be lowered, so firefighters had to get the men

down. both were taken to a hospital burn unit. developing news now out of central california, where the california highway patrol believes lack of safety played a huge part in the two vehicle crash that killed eight men in madera county. happened just after six this morning involving a gmc safari van and a chevy pickup truck. they collided head on. one man in the truck and seven men in the van died. another person was injured but is expected to survive. officers say the men in the van were heading to work. most of them not wearing seatbelts. >> it could have been a different outcome had the passengers of the vehicle, if they would have been wearing their seatbelt, and this is what we're trying to prevent totally preventable. the chp believes the truck may have crossed lanes and hit the van after a witness told them she saw the truck weaving before the crash. >> governor newsom is in washington for the annual national governors meeting with president biden. the governor says today that the president discussed his policies and initiatives. >> well, i was just with him.

he's making a case for industrial policy, bringing back american manufacturing jobs and supply chains. he was talking about the chips act, the science act. he was talking about his bipartisan infrastructure bill. he was talking about what he wants to accomplish on the border as effectively or, well, than any of us. and i just had that privilege and opportunity to see that with governors from both the republican and the democratic party. newsom adds the president wants to compromise with republicans on immigration and the border. >> but donald trump continues to block a deal. the black tie dinner is tomorrow night. >> new developments with the alabama court ruling that led to several providers halting in vitro fertilization services. state lawmakers are now putting together new proposals to protect ivf, the state supreme court ruled, giving embryos the same rights as children, but it was implied legislation could be crafted to help provide more clarity and protections. some couples did decide to leave the state to try to continue their ivf journey in a landmark move, 97% of cal state university students voted to create the

largest student assistant union in the country. >> now, this comes after years of battling for better treatment and benefits from the csu system. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey explains what that means for students on a college campus. >> if the students are the blood and professors are the brain, student workers might be the heart. by doing their part to keep everything going. but student assistants believe they haven't been part of that process. their pay is low, their hours are few, and they have no union to protect their rights. until now, um, today we had student assistants who work on 23 campuses. >> um, at the cal state university system make history. um, you just heard the state officials here at the public employment relations board announced that the csu student assistants have overwhelmingly voted yes for our union >> yes. >> cheers. from across the state as the student assistants overwhelmingly vote to join the csu employees union, this group of more than 19,000 students

makes up the largest union of undergraduate student workers in the nation. >> you know, there are times where my supervisors are like, oh yeah, we need more student assistants. >> alex alfaro works at san jose state's registrar's office and her colleagues work in many capacities across the csu system, union rising will allow student assistants to fight for more hours, higher pay, even sick time. >> for me, sick days was one of the really important things like if i'm sick for class, like i catch covid, i can talk to the professor, but like when you actually work here, you're kind of just screwed. >> basically no time off if you didn't work, you lost money. >> yeah, basically, we're in an era of strikes and unions from fast food workers, airport employees, even csu faculty, seiu international president mary kay henry says these students have once again shown workers are stronger together. >> our movement to win unions for all is about demanding transformational change. it's about using our power to win the future. we want one that is full

some changes. but it has been sending us all these high clouds. so today you probably notice the filtered sunshine, the beautiful sunset with those high, thin, wispy clouds. here's a look at what's happening ahead of that area of low pressure. we are seeing winds coming off the land blowing towards the coast offshore winds holding the temperatures up along with the cloud cover. it is 58 in the city. i mean, these temperatures, some of them look like they should be highs for the day. 56 in san jose, 57 in oakland, many areas in the 40s and the 50s. live view from emeryville. camera. beautiful view of san francisco tomorrow. sunshine, warmer weather sunday. we're talking about cooler weather. a few showers in the late afternoon evening and monday. those showers will be spreading. so let's start off with tomorrow because it is just going to be a chamber of commerce day in the morning. some high clouds by noontime. look at these temperatures. they're in the 60s well above average. today's highs were in the 60s and 70s. but tomorrow we're going to take it up even more. it is going to get even

warmer. 60s and 70s. i'll show you where those high temperatures ultimately end up. 40 and 50s tomorrow morning. if you have early plans, it's not going to be chilly at all. and then in the afternoon, it's shorts weather in the south bay. i mean, can you believe these numbers? 74 in san jose, more like spring and gilroy, 74 degrees, santa clara and the south bay 72 on the peninsula, 71 in palo alto, 68 in san mateo, 66 half moon bay. there will be plenty of sun in san francisco, 68 degrees north bay. temperature is 68. in san rafael, 73. santa rosa 71. in napa, heading into the east bay, 70 in oakland 71. castro valley. if you like sunshine and warmth, you're going to need to soak this up. 70 in concord, 71 degrees in livermore. now. sunday things change. clouds start to increase as that low approaches. a few showers at 3:00 in the afternoon, going into 5 p.m, but these are not widespread, so we don't have a storm impact scale for a sunday. it's monday that we'll have that storm impact scale and by monday night we're talking about a few hundredths of an inch of rain.
