it's our top story. a wild weekend of destruction across two locations in vallejo. a fire inside a target. and tonight, brand new videos from a sideshow that turns into chaos and witnesses are telling us all about it. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm dan ashley, and i'm ama daetz. >> sunday, a sideshow got out of hand in vallejo and led to a brawl, shooting and looting of a nearby 7-eleven store. and tonight, neighbors are upset over the police response. >> we have reported plenty on the police staffing shortages gripping vallejo in recent months, and abc seven news reporter j.r stone is hearing from those neighbors and has the new video being used in the investigation. >> this is served video showing dozens of teens and young adults

rushing into a vallejo 7-eleven on sunday. police say the location, which now has plywood covering a busted out window, was ran, sacked and items were stolen by some of those who went inside. but this is only part of what happened. police and witnesses say everything started during a sideshow at this intersection in front of the store, and a male that shot male blue jeans, black cap, pulled a gun from his hoodie and started shooting in that direction. witnesses who live in this nearby neighborhood say the sideshow is going on for some time, and someone in this truck then tried to drive through it, and at one point we saw a white truck drive into the sideshow. >> um, and the all the kids from the sideshow went and grabbed him out of the truck and started beating him up. and destroying his vehicle. >> video shows people jumping on top of the truck as the crowd went after the driver. a fight even broke out in the area. at least two people were injured,

according to police. one of them struck by a bullet and one of them running into the 7-eleven for help. witnesses tell us the crowd chased after the man who ran into the store. as this happened, witnesses tell us others set the man's truck on fire. all this before police even arrived. neighbors are fearful and chose not to show their face. when we spoke with them monday, this woman says she called police and officers did not arrive for at least 40 minutes. >> i'm a homeowner here and i pay my taxes and to not get the help that i need is really disheartening because i. i grew up here in vallejo and my city is not coming through for me. but the talk between officers on the police scanner spoke of cars running red lights and at least one ambulance blocked in. >> no arrests have been made. vallejo police tell us they did respond at one point, along with deputies from the napa county sheriff's department and the solano county sheriff's office, some neighbors say that's not

good enough. >> i would love for the city of vallejo to just get their act together, especially concerning the police department. >> vallejo police are urging anyone with information in this case to come forward, but at the same time, i've talked with numerous neighbors who tell me they have video of what happened, but no detectives have come by in vallejo, jr. stone abc seven news. meantime a target in vallejo is now staying closed for a week after someone started a fire inside the store. >> police say it happened saturday afternoon about 3 p.m. on the store at admiral callaghan lane. arson investigators are working to recover surveillance video and search for a suspect here. six fire engines were dispatched as smoke just poured out of the building. one witness shot video on his cell phone showing the flames erupt toward the ceiling from inside the store. >> i was in the toothpaste aisle and i turned to my right and there was just like flames all in the paper towel aisle. i saw

a paper flying in the air, and i called my mom and we started to evacuate. >> now the good news no one was hurt, but damage to merchandise and the building itself is expected to cost more than $1 million. new at 11, a long standing san francisco restaurant, sam's burgers is all boarded up tonight after getting its window smashed in. >> in one photo, you can see the gaping hole in that front window. a manager there tells us someone threw one of their outdoor seating chairs through that glass. sam's has been on broadway off columbus since 1966, in the late anthony bourdain once said it was one of the top three burgers in the world, and the manager says nothing like this has ever happened at this burger spot in its 60 plus years of business. and with all our reporting, we make sure to give you the full picture of public safety where you live with our abc seven safety neighborhood safety tracker shows you a wide range of statistics over the years for san francisco, oakland and san jose. you'll find it on the front page of abc seven news.com. >> all right, let's turn to the

forecast east for tomorrow because it's going to get a little cooler in some places. >> that's right. abc seven news meteorologist andy patel is here with that in our 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandhya. yeah and dan and i definitely want to bundle up tomorrow morning because the chill will be with us. >> let's take a look at those temperatures right now. palo alto is at 45 degrees. danville 4650 around san francisco and oakland. because of the breeze. but you will notice that chill 39, in calistoga right now, 48 degrees in santa rosa. frost advisory goes up 2 to 9 a.m. tomorrow for the north bay. temperatures down to 36 degrees with frost forming. you will definitely want to protect any sensitive plants. so here's a look at your planner. chill and some patchy frost tomorrow morning. mid 30s to the mid 40s. it's going to be bright skies at noontime in the afternoon. really pleasant upper 50s to the mid 60s. 7 p.m. clear and cooler once again. and just in case you have forgotten that we're still in winter, you'll be reminded this week as our rain chances go up later on this week, i'll be

back with a full look at the forecast coming right up. dan >> okay sandhya, thanks a lot. now the sierra is gearing for a quite a storm later this week. here's a live look at i-80 through the donner lake area. there's some good snow build up there tonight. a chains are required on 80 going from kingvale all the way through truckee. and then there's this winter warning from the national weather service. it says from thursday to sunday, the sierra could see anywhere from 5 to 12ft of snow in spots above 5000ft. they're expecting whiteout conditions, so travel will be nearly impossible. and that leads us right into tonight's abc seven news advance for at 11. >> that's our way to keep you aware. and ahead of the headlines, you'll be hearing more about in the days to come. we begin in oakland. we start with the ongoing search for the police chief this week. residents are going to get the chance to meet the new finalists for the job during a public forum. it's certainly been a long and winding road to get to this point now. >> we asked the police commission who those candidates might be, but they are keeping that quiet for now.

>> abc seven news reporter ryan curry is looking ahead to what the job will require. >> it's one of the common issues heard throughout oakland. if you ask those who live here or run a business, they've had enough cars getting broken into. >> people getting robbed, stores getting breaking into. and it's been it's been going on for the past two years. >> ali mohammed owns a market in oakland. he says his store gets robbed almost daily. >> i think a week ago we had two break ins within a period of time of uh- of three days. it's now been more than a year since mayor shengtao fired former police chief laurent armstrong on thursday. >> oakland residents will be able to meet the new candidates. they say. whoever they are, they need to make changes fast. >> we need to have the chief uh. the potential chief has a basic understanding of the diverse cultures and to build uh- the working relationship with all community. >> his data from the abc seven news i-team shows robberies, burglaries and vehicle thefts in oakland are all on the rise in the last few years. recently

places like in-n-out and denny's announced they will be closing because of the crime in their area. although being born and raised in oakland, ali says he's thought about moving. >> i love this city, but i just this crime rates is just pushing me out. uh, sometimes i think about, you know, just going to a different state where it's more safer. >> mayor shengtao already rejected the first round of candidates proposed by the police commission. although the new names of the candidates have not been revealed. and council member noel gayo says the police chief is the most important position in oakland can hire. right now, we're now responding through 911 calls. >> we're not responding to 311 calls regarding the stolen vehicles, the abandoned vehicles is, uh, you know, breaking into your car store owners like ali say, without a chief. >> they feel like city leaders don't care about them right now. >> we just want to be like a normal city. just want to be like everybody else. uh, but unfortunately, it's chaos around here in oakland. >> ryan curry, abc seven news.

>> and just to give you a broader perspective on how the city of oakland got here, started in early 2021, when previous oakland mayor libby schaaf appointed leronne armstrong chief of police. then a little over a year ago, current mayor shengtao fired armstrong over allegations he mishandled a police misconduct case. he has since been cleared of wrongdoing by an independent audit and is now suing the mayor and the city. in late december of 2023, mayor tao rejected the police commission's finalist, kicking off a new search and coming on march 1st. the new final list of names is due to the mayor. >> our next abc seven news advancer at 11 tonight. president biden is expected to make a rare visit to the us mexico border on thursday, the same day former president trump will visit as well. the two will be about 300 miles apart. however, president biden will be in brownsville, texas. that's on the very southern tip of the state. former president trump is expected to give remarks in eagle pass. that's about five hours west as you can imagine, the visits underscore just how important both parties feel

immigration is playing in the 2024 presidential race, and that comes as president biden says he hopes for a cease fire in gaza by next monday. >> speaking in new york today, president said his national security adviser believes a deal between israel and hamas is close. negotiations have been ongoing between the two sides, brokered by the u.s, egypt and qatar. the administration believes a ceasefire would allow for the release of the remaining israeli hostages in hamas's custody. by tomorrow, the president will meet in d.c. with the top four congressional leaders president biden will push them to pass a new multibillion dollar emergency aid package for israel and ukraine. >> in the north bay, a youth homeless shelter is officially shutting down for good. the nonprofit social advocates for youth, known as say, told staff this morning they will close doors soon. that's according to the press democrat. the 53 year old local shelter failed to raise $1 million needed to keep operations running. 70 people were currently living at the shelter and will now lose their

housing. 400 youth also received critical mental health services from, say, each year in the south bay. >> lots of reaction tonight to this one, a small business owner says that her sales are up after a big order from tesla was canceled last minute. >> yeah, the cancellation cost the local pie shop thousands of dollars. but after her story went viral, tesla ceo elon musk responded. >> customers have since flooded the giving pies with business. after seeing our story on social media, elon musk heard about it late last week and responded, saying he will make things good with the bakery. >> they asked me to cater march 5th and seventh, but i had to decline because i don't have any more crust because everybody came to buy pies and we have so many events in march. it's all crazy. i really don't have any time for them. >> the owner tells us. tesla has since repaid the $2,000 on the original order, and she is open to working with them again. >> it's working out all right. a new recall effort against governor newsom. he beat it

askew, california, is launching its second attempt. >> they've collected 500 signatures and submitted all the paperwork needed to file for a recall. we got them in three days. >> um, they range from mostly just depressed, repressed and suppressed citizens of the state of california, along with some leadership and law enforcement. and so forth. >> the group believes the governor has abandoned state issues like homelessness and education rankings to focus on advancing his president ambitions. their biggest concern include granting health benefits for undocumented immigrants and the state's current $73 billion deficit. however experts say the budget deficit shouldn't get, newsom recalled. but could hurt his presidential goals. >> gavin newsom has beat back recalls before he hasn't done anything necessarily scandalous since then, and we still have a pretty strong democratic majority in the state. >> the recall effort comes less

than three years after the first failed attempt back in 2021, and we are just over a week to california's march primary. >> it is next tuesday, march fifth. registered voters received a mail in ballot. if you're not registered or didn't receive one, you can still vote to get in touch with your county elections office or show up at a polling place on election day. >> there's an effort underway tonight to block the proposed merger of albertsons and kroger, america's two largest national supermarket chains. california attorney general rob bonta says california among the states joining the federal trade commission lawsuit to stop this deal if it went through, it would be the largest supermarket merger in history. the lawsuit claims the merger violates federal law and would lead to higher prices, store closures and job loss. >> there's no other way to say it. it's bad for workers. it's bad for agricultural producers. it's bad for consumers in california and across the country, the lawsuit is also supported by labor unions representing grocery store workers.

impossible. we're talking whiteout conditions, snowfall projections through sunday night, 96in at donner, 91 at kirkwood. if you want to go, the best time to get out of here is the next two days. after that, it's going to be dicey. so we take a look at what's happening. high pressure is building in. so you get a couple of dry days. but today you probably noticed in some parts of the bay area there was an area of low pressure off the southern california coast. pulled in a little bit of lift, a weak front from the north, and the combination of the two resulted in some showers across the bay area, so they were around earlier today. they're long gone, and here's a look at how much we got. uh- half moon bay 2200/900 in redwood city. a few hundredths in livermore, fremont, santa cruz and sfo. winds are gusting to 22 in half moon bay, right now, which is helping to hold some of these temperatures up. but they will drop tonight, night and by morning it's going to get even colder. so 40s and 50 right now by morning we're talking about

mid 30s and our coldest location is like napa, santa rosa down to 32. lakeport 37 degrees in livermore. so definitely bundle up because it will be a chilly one tomorrow through wednesday. chilly mornings, sunny days, thursday through saturday. you're looking at colder, wet, gusty conditions and this weekend there's a possibility of snow on our highest peaks. i know it sounds a little crazy, but not all that out of the ordinary. 50s and 60s on your temperatures, there will be plenty of sun tomorrow. now we're going to fast forward to what's coming. cold storm out of the gulf of alaska thursday morning, bringing in those showers as the sierra gets big time snow. this could be the most significant snow of the season so far. so stay tuned. but certainly this storm, because it is cold in nature, doesn't hold as much moisture in terms of rain for the bay area, but it will be a big snow maker in the mountains as we take a look at your rainfall projections through sunday, we're really looking at 1 to 2in for most of you. there will be some areas like ukiah picking up higher totals. as we look at the
