♪ to change in a matter of hours. with rain marching through the bay area starting tomorrow morning. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks so much for joining us. rain is on the way and in the sierra they could get an awful lot of snow. we're talking about several feet of snow. >> that's right. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with a first look at the forecast. sandhya. >> yeah, and dan and emma, the weather is going to come to an abrupt end. that is our spring-like conditions we had today. winter is making a return starting tomorrow. so let's look at live doppler seven. it is a

level one storm moving in our direction. cold upper level low. coming out of the gulf of alaska, you're going to feel the chill and certainly going to notice the precipitation moving in right now it is to our north. but that all changes come tomorrow morning. we're going to see some scattered showers for the morning commute starting out light. and then as the afternoon goes on, the intensity will pick up. we'll see some moderate showers for the afternoon evening commute this goes on into the late night hours. this is a level one storm tomorrow for light to moderate showers. wind gusts 25 to 35 plus miles an hour. impacts to both commutes. an avalanche watch has been issued for the back country of the central sierra. 7 a.m. friday until 5 p.m. sunday. high to extreme avalanche danger is expected during this time, and certainly unprecedented snow is expected. blizzard warning starts tomorrow morning at 4 a.m. it runs until 10 a.m. sunday at the highest peaks. we're expecting 12ft or more of snow. that is unbelievable. 5 to 10ft of snow above 5000.

expecting 1 to 4ft at lower elevations. and the snow rates will be down even as low as 2000ft. this weekend, with wind gusts 75 miles an hour or higher . extremely dangerous to impossible travel. i would not advise travel, and you can pretty much clearly see why i wouldn't advise it. not only is this snow going to be coming down, look at the winds. kirkwood over 50 mile an hour. wind gusts at times 53 miles an hour. friday and that means we are talking about whiteout conditions and blowing snow. i'll be back with the tahoe forecast, plus a look at your weekend weather coming right up. >> dan okay sandy, thanks a lot. now a series sandy has said the sierra is about to get some really epic snow from this storm 12ft or more in the next three days. here's a live look at zephyr cove in lake tahoe tonight. for skiers and snowboarders, the vibes are good ahead of the storm, i was going to be at 13 for sure, but experts are warning while it's tempting to get outside with all that snow, it's actually not that safe. they recommend anyone who's already in tahoe should ride it out for the next few

vallejo target on saturday. the store has remained closed since the incident, but police now say arson is to blame. investigators uncovered surveillance video showing an unidentified suspect igniting a row filled with paper towels. the damage to the store and merchandise is estimated to exceed $3 million. vallejo pd is asking anyone with information to contact them tonight. >> the abc seven news i-team is digging into a serious employment issue facing the city of oakland. the city has nearly 4300 positions, but almost 800 of them are vacant. unfilled. abc seven news i-team reporter stephanie sierra on how oakland compares to other bay area cities. we all know oakland has no police chief. >> still, after a year. but here's another problem there are more than 780 other vacant positions across the city, according to an october 2023 staffing report. that's more than 18% of positions across all city departments. a vacancy rate that's higher than san francisco , san jose, berkeley, concord,

hayward, fremont and richmond all the way down from the police department down to the public works agency, where i need people to clean my streets. oakland city council member noel gayo says there's a significant street defect backlog, in part due to more than 120 vacancies in the city's public works department. the i-team's analysis of city data found 13 city departments have vacancies, rates above 20, up to 44. these departments provide crucial public services like violence prevention, transportation, housing and community development, parks and rec and the fire department. but two departments that have just one vacancy each, the workforce and employment standards department and the mayor's office. >> the mayor elevated her salaries and hire more people were elected to serve the public and to serve ourselves. >> the i-team reached out to the mayor, but she was unavailable for an interview. we were told by her office that there has been significant hiring activity lately, with 92 new employees registered for the february new

employee orientation in the mayor's office could not clarify which departments were impacted, but say they're prioritizing hiring the most essential positions, including police officers and 911 dispatchers. they say 70 of the 76 authorized dispatcher positions have been hired. progress. yet? >> you know, i still don't have a police chief. >> on tuesday, mayor tao sent this letter to the city's police commission informing them she won't be attending thursday's public forum to help select a new chief. according to the letter, tao states a public forum does not help recruit the best candidate s a form identifying candidates places those individuals at unnecessary risk with their current employers. it may also force oakland to enter into a premature bidding war with an individual's current employer. the i-team has confirmed at least one officer recently left opd to work next door in alameda . police chief nishant joshi has an attractive offer. >> our salaries are very competitive. this hiring incentive is the highest in the country. >> if you combine the starting salary with the one time hiring

bonus, an officer with no experience in alameda is making $188,000 in year one. in oakland , it's around $106,000. we will have the entire patrol division fully staffed by summer of this year. the neighboring city, a stark contrast of success less as oakland faces hundreds of resignations for the i-team. stephanie sierra, abc seven news now the staffing report also shows more than 580 city employees resigned over the past four years. >> that's not including the hundreds of people who retired during that same time frame. >> one of the most iconic tex-mex restaurants in the bay area is closing for good. the chevy's in emeryville has been well known for its picturesque waterfront views since it first opened in 1986, but now the restaurant is planning on shutting its doors april 16th. the parent company, experienced restaurant group, hasn't given a reason for the closure, but workers at the restaurant tell us they expect the land to get snapped up quickly. three new at

11 over the past 24 hours, we've reported on the pending closure of macy's flagship store in union square. there is no doubt this is a big blow to san francisco, but now we're learning of two more business closures a deli that once had 16 locations just closed its final two restaurants in san francisco, 12 of those locations were in the downtown area. just a few years ago. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone spoke with the owner, who says the financial district is not the place to be right now. >> you've probably seen a lee's deli location in san francisco for 40 years. the family run operation had multiple stores in the city by the bay as of recently, though, they are all closed permanently. >> covid has been a disease for us, let's put it that way. so so it's been difficult and we tried opening like six, 6 or 8 stores in the beginning. in 2021, it was ugly. there was just nobody around. you can't we can't do business. >> and while some people have come back to work, lee kwan, who

started and ran lee's deli, says those customers are mainly there just three days a week for a breakfast and lunch shop in or near san francisco's financial district. he says that doesn't pay the bills. lee points to inflation, the multiple minimum wage hikes in recent years in san francisco and a lack of support from city and state leaders after covid. >> they do anything to really help us know what things they did were insufficient to deal with the problem. we needed people to come back in, and we needed the homeless people out. when pandemic hit, we had 12 stores. let's say each one of those stores was stocked for food that would last a couple of weeks, up to a month. so when we could not open all that food, ended up going into garbage can. >> wednesday night we spoke with san francisco mayor london breed about the current struggle in the financial district. >> revitalization takes time. we've been through a global pandemic. shopping patterns have changed, and so we need to adjust to that. and we need to

reduce like all the fees and taxes and barriers that make it difficult for people to thrive in business in san francisco. and that's exactly what i'm doing. lee who is now nearly 80, says he's leaned on faith and family in the last few months. >> we even had a good laugh when i learned that he still has dim sum in his freezer. leftovers after his final two stores closed, and he's holding his head up high for lasting 40 years and remembering the good times with family. >> if i had to do it again, i'll go to the richmond district. i'll go sunset, i'll go out one of the neighborhoods. >> yeah, yeah. >> you know, and helping out there not not in downtown. jr stone, abc seven news. >> we've put together a map showing the notable store closures in san francisco since 2020. each blue pin indicate is a store that is closed or has announced it plans to close. if you click on the pin, it will give you the business name. the address, and the closure date. there's also a link in each one that goes into greater detail about why the store decided to

close its doors. all right, moving on now. >> new developments tonight with the door that blew off an alaska airlines flight last month, the justice department is now investigating boeing. that's according to abc news. boeing has an agreement stemming from an investigation over two crashes involving the 737 max aircraft. it is what's called a deferred prosecution agreement that included a fine and a requirement that boeing must cooperate with federal investigators if boeing violated the terms of the agreement, it could face criminal prosecution. there are new developments tonight. in two major legal cases involving former president donald trump. a judge in illinois says trump is ineligible for the state's march 19th primary, and his name will not appear on the ballot. the decision overrules a january decision from the illinois state board of elections, also, the us supreme court says it will take up trump's claim that as a former president, he has immunity from accusations that he interfered with the 2020 election. the former president

is appealing a lower court ruling in that case. >> mitch mcconnell, the longest serving senate leader in the u.s. history in u.s. history, is preparing to step down. mcconnell announced today he will leave the position in november. the kentucky senator informed his colleagues that while he will serve out the rest of his terms, which ends in 2027, but he will no longer serve in leadership, father time remains undefeated. >> i'm no longer the young man sitting in the back hoping colleagues would remember my name. it's time for the next generation of leadership. >> mcconnell has been the senate's top republican since 2007. over the years, he has almost single handedly helped deliver major legislative victories for the gop. mcconnell turned 82 last week, and there have been persistent questions about his health. twice last year, he appeared to freeze mid-sentence during news conferences coming up, a call for help. >> why breast milk is in high

news south bay reporter lauren martinez reports on how this limited resource can be crucial. >> mothers milk bank in san jose is calling on moms to donate surplus breast milk. the nation's oldest milk bank collects, processes and distributes to neonatal intensive care units across the state and beyond. >> the application process takes about ten minutes, and it goes a long way to saving a baby's life. here at santa clara valley medical, they receive all their donations directly from mothers milk bank. breast milk is one of the most important things that protects the baby against infection, and also protects the neurodevelopment of any baby, especially very pretum infants. >> doctor priya jegathesan says. donated breast milk provides an option for families during a baby's first weeks of life. >> our current feeding protocol means that we provide exclusive human milk feeding for all pretum infants until they are

close to 35 weeks gestational age and that is essential to promote optimal growth. >> andrea hernandez looked into being a donor after seeing the impact it can have for babies and mothers. >> my cousin gave birth to twins and they were both in the nicu and she was telling me how she was trying to pump and she was really producing just very little. and so she was telling me that luckily the hospital has donor breast milk. >> hernandez donated her milk twice after having her daughter arianna, and is planning for a third donation. she said after being screened, donating was easy so it was like two days later i received a little cooler in the mail and i packaged up my milk, called fedex, scheduled a pick up time and they picked it up and off the milk went. starting thursday, mothers milk bank is kicking off their statewide initiative to get more donations of that liquid gold us moms should all stick together and help out those moms who, you

know, can't produce, you know, for whatever it is that they just they can't. >> it's like, you know, every little bit counts. every drop counts. like let's all stick together. let's let's help babies out. let's donate in san jose. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> people who smoke cannabis frequently are more likely to report having a heart attack or a stroke compared to non-users. that's according to a new study published in the journal of the american heart association. daily cannabis use primarily by smoking, is associated with a 25% increased risk of heart attack and 42% increased risk of stroke. but the study only looked at association not if cannabis actually causes these increases. smoking weekly is associated with a 3% higher risk of heart attack and a 5% higher risk of stroke. it's been a night of music, culture and cuisine at san francisco city hall. >> covid you know, roman, go

blizzard conditions friday. saturday. temperatures dropping sunday is brisk with snow lingering so really i would hold off on travel if i were you because it is not very safe to do so right now. as i mentioned at the top of the show from our mount tam cam, you can certainly see the changes underway right now we are seeing the clouds gathering ahead of our incoming cold storm coming in from the gulf of alaska. you will notice all this cold, unstable air, the speckled clouds. that's an indication of the instability. instability that's coming our way right now. it's all to our north. so on live doppler seven, we have some clouds right now. temperatures are in the 40s and 50s. today, our warmest spots were in the upper 60s to low 70s, low 70s san jose, santa rosa. that's all coming to a change. here's a view from exploratorium camera tomorrow. cooler, wet and windy friday. rain gusty thunder. chance and then this weekend we're talking about cold snow on our peaks. even the possibility of hail. so level one storm for tomorrow. light to moderate showers, wind

gusts, 25 to 35 miles an hour or higher in impacts to both commutes. so be aware of that. tomorrow morning at 7 a.m, you see those scattered light showers as we head into the afternoon hours, we start to see some pockets of moderate showers indicated by the yellow there. at 3:00, those showers will continue well into the night, and that means we will be seeing accumulating rain. but it's not going to be a lot. we're not expecting a lot with this first round. so we are talking about nine hundredths of an inch around livermore, about a third of an inch around santa rosa, yountville seeing higher totals to our north. that's just a taste of what's to come. it's going to mean big time snow in the sierra blizzard warning once again. 4 a.m. thursday, 10 a.m. sunday. so it's going to be stretching for days. multiple feet of snow over multiple days, 12ft or more for the highest peaks. with those gusty winds, it's going to be dangerous to drive up there. we are going to see the surf get kicked up. so a high surf advisory friday morning at ten until 4 p.m. saturday. large breaking waves 15 to 20ft, especially those west facing beaches. so a good idea to just kind of watch from

afar if you are going to go out and brave the elements, winds will pick up friday afternoon 30 miles an hour, topping 40 miles an hour. by friday evening, so the winds will remain strong and gusty going into friday night and then start to back off a bit as we go towards saturday afternoon. so showers first thing friday morning. those showers become a little more moderate and then look at the intensity going up as we head towards friday night. even some snow showers to our north and there's potential for thunderstorms friday night. certainly snow showing up on mount hamilton, cobb mountain going into saturday morning, and some of those hills in lake and mendocino counties will be looking at snow as well in terms of rainfall between friday and saturday edition, all three quarters of an inch in brentwood to over two inches of rain expected in ukiah. so it's not going to be a big rainmaker, but it's certainly going to bring us a lot of wintry weather. uh- 40 on your temperatures. grab those umbrellas. keep them handy tomorrow afternoon. highs will be in the 50s and 60s. a far cry from the 60s and 70s we had
