able to meet the four people who are now up for the job. abc seven news reporter lena howland is here with a look at the candidates and why the mayor says she's not going to be attending tonight's forum to select this new chief. lena reggie, after the city of oakland has now been without a police chief for more than a year, community members will finally have the opportunity to hear from the top four candidates vying for the job tonight. >> it's a diverse group with only one local candidate. abdul pridgen is the former san leandro police chief. he left the department last week. floyd mitchell was the chief of the lubbock, texas, police department. lisa davis is currently a lieutenant colonel in cincinnati. lewis molina has an extensive resume and is currently the assistant deputy mayor for public safety in new york city. we talked to an oakland market owner ahead of the forum who says his store gets robbed almost daily. it's come to a point where he's considering leaving the city, and he says without a chief, it feels like city leaders don't care about business owners. right now, i love this city, but

i just this crime rate is just pushing me out. >> uh- sometimes i think about, you know, just going to a different state where it's more safer. we just want to be like a normal city, just want to be like everybody else. but unfortunately, it's chaos around here. >> on tuesday, mayor tao sent this letter to the city's police commission informing them she won't be attending tonight's forum. according to the letter, tao says a public forum does not help recruit the best candidates. a forum identifying candidates places those individuals at unnecessary risk with their current employer. it may also force oakland to enter into a premature bidding war with an individual's current employer. the meet the candidates forum starts at 630 tonight at oakland city hall. however, all candidates will be appearing virtually on zoom instead of in person. live in studio. lena howland abc seven news. >> thanks so much, lena. now to the closure of the macy's flagship store in union square.

kwan, the owner of lee's deli, tells abc seven news. business is business has really suffered since the beginning of the pandemic. a lack of foot traffic, inflation and minimum wage increases have all played a role, kwan says. people who are around the financial district are usually there only three days a week for breakfast or lunch, and that's not enough to pay the bills. >> we tried opening, i think, 6 or 8 stores in the beginning. in 2021. it was ugly. there was just nobody around. you can't. we can't do business. >> we spoke with mayor london breed about the current state of the financial district. she says revitalization takes time, time and her office is working to reduce fees and taxes for business owners. and we have put together a map showing the notable store closures in san francisco since 2020. each blue pen and there are many of them indicates a store that is closed or has announced it plans to close. if you click on the pen, it will give you the business name, the address and the closure date. there's also a link in each one that goes into

between water and land. a nine mile stretch of the coyote creek from montague expressway to tully road will soon be protected by these flood walls. >> when a creek overflows it, it basically exceeds the capacity of the water that the creek itself will carry. so when you build flood walls on either side, you're providing more of that space or volume for the water to be held back. >> a large stretch of the walls are installed near berryessa. they stand between 3 to 10ft tall, depending on the creek capacity. in that area. what you don't see is the 30ft of reinforced steel below the surface, providing a strong force to keep flood waters at bay. engineers tend to avoid the word never, so while they can't say 2017 will never happen again in valley, water is confident these walls will work 20 years. >> tom is essentially the design year. um, that that we are designing this project around approximately and. likely that that kind of recurrence interval storms will not cause cause as as much of a damage as we saw back then for people who lived

through that damage, a little peace of mind for the next storms, it should work. >> we'll only we'll have to wait and see. i'm willing to wait 100 years to find out. >> construction started last summer. the first 40% of the project will finish by next summer, before it's on to the next phase in san jose. dustin dorsey, abc seven news. >> all right. good morning to you thursday morning. we've had some rain already in marin and sonoma. a lot of cold air to the north and west of this cold front that will be pushing through the bay area later on today. and as we get in closer, you can see just a little bit of a return here from our radar. and this is some mist and drizzle in the north bay. but the front a couple hours away, it is 52, in hayward. good morning fremont 46 for you. and up in the north bay we're looking at temperatures right around 50. santa rosa, 47 in sonoma. and as we look outside, dry pavement there for the bay bridge cooler, wet and windy today looking at friday, the chance of a thunderstorm as that cold air moves in behind the

cold front. and then this weekend we could see some snow around mount hamilton and perhaps a mount saint helena. here's a look at the rain as we go through the morning hours. it's midday. you'll notice the heaviest rain in the north bay continues to sweep south and east through the bay area, allowing for a wet commute for the evening. but rainfall amounts will be will be light with this level one system a third of an inch for you in san francisco, a couple hundredths around fremont st and the south bay and as we look at the rainfall totals adding up friday, saturday and sunday, it's a rainy couple of days will be over an inch in the city, maybe two inches in hayward, but as for today, get set for a change in the weather pattern. looking at temperatures from the upper 50s with scattered rain showers, those breezy to gusty winds in the accuweather seven day forecast level one system today, a level two system tomorrow as we get the colder air chance of a thunderstorm and some of those downpours and a wintry mix saturday and sunday. reggie. >> thanks so much, lisa. the incoming snow has skiers and

million. officials say while it looks for buyers right now, they're considering removing the graffiti, but they don't want to entice taggers with a clean canvas. 28 people were arrested at the complex in just the past month. the spring break season is approaching fast, and this year could see some big changes for college students heading to florida. >> gloria. in some places, the drinking age and prices are going up. >> that's right amanda, some businesses in fort lauderdale are planning to raise the drinking age to 23 for out of state visitors. now, the beaches of south florida have always been a spring break destination, but violence in years past is prompting law enforcement to take new action this year. last spring break, there were two deadly shootings and about 600 arrests in miami beach. in addition to more police patrols, the city is adding a midnight curfew and increased dui checkpoints and $100 parking garage rates for visitors. also, access to the beach will now close at 6 p.m.
